Every two months, the Malacca City Council organises a collection drive to collect recyclable waste.

For used cooking oil, the City Council works together with Evergreen Oil and Feed in their Waste to Wealth programme, which pays members of the public who sell their oil to Evergreen for RM3 per kg.

The company then processes the oil into sustainable aviation fuel.

00:00This is how Malacca is transforming waste cooking oil into money.
00:05Instead of throwing away used oil in drains where it pollutes the environment,
00:09the Malacca City Council is working together with Evergreen Oil and Feed to reduce waste
00:14by paying the public 3 Malaysian Ringgits for every kilogram of used cooking oil.
00:20Every two months, they organize a recyclable waste collection drive
00:24where the public can bring used oil to be weighed,
00:27have their details registered and finally get paid.
00:31On average, Evergreen collects around 2 to 4 tonnes of used cooking oil per collection drive
00:37which would then be sent to their main filtration facility nearby.
00:41The used cooking oil would then be transferred to filtration tanks
00:44where it is heated up to 70 degrees Celsius for 30 minutes.
00:49The top 80% of the oil is collected and strained
00:53and the remaining 20% which has sediment is sent for another 2 to 3 rounds of this filtration process.
00:59The whole process takes around 2 days
01:01after which the processed oil is sent to a few 65 ton storage tanks.
01:06With that, the oil is now ready to be sold to their clients in Europe
01:10like Repsol from Spain, Neste and Shell
01:13where this liquid gold is turned into sustainable aviation fuel.
