00:00Applause for Barbara Massing from her colleagues after she was elected as DW's first female
00:06director general.
00:07Massing has been administrative director of Deutsche Welle for over ten years.
00:12From October she will replace Peter Limburg, who has led Germany's international broadcaster
00:17since 2013.
00:19I am convinced that together we will really take DW forward, that we will continue down
00:26the path we have taken and reinvent ourselves.
00:31The government's media commissioner said she was a good choice.
00:35She is an experienced manager, she knows the organisation and she knows how to modernise
00:41Deutsche Welle.
00:42She will carry the voice of freedom into the world and we are very happy about that.
00:47DW produces video, text and audio across its wide range of platforms, serving audiences
00:53in 32 languages.
00:55Unlike other German public broadcasters, it is financed from tax revenues and is ultimately
01:01the responsibility of the government, though its reporting is independent.
01:05The director general's job will be to steer Deutsche Welle as it faces challenges to free
01:10expression around the world and also seeks to expand its reach.
