Health professionals in NHS fear palliative care after Harold Shipman murdersReuters
Transcript
00:00Just before you vote for this bill, just pause for a moment and think to yourself, wouldn't it be better, as we did and we've heard about the many, many hours on the abortion bill, the universality of clinical acceptance of it.
00:16Before we vote for this bill, don't you think we should ask the Health Department to have a profound and knowledgeable study working with the Royal Colleges on whether it is possible to have decent palliative care, not just in our wonderful hospices, but in all our hospitals.
00:36There's no doubt that in recent years, particularly since shipment, there has been a fear amongst many health professionals in the NHS about providing that degree of palliative care, that degree of morphine, venetol, or these hugely effective modern drugs.
00:54So just pause, think, we're not voting on a principle, we can come back to this on a later date, we can get consensus, and we can have a really good bill which will allow everybody to die in dignity.
