00:00Hello.
00:01Hi, can I speak to Teresa, please?
00:02It's Teresa.
00:03Teresa, how are you? This is Jubal from Brooke and Jubal in the Morning.
00:07Who?
00:08Jubal from Brooke and Jubal in the Morning. It's a radio show.
00:11I'm guessing by the who, you haven't listened to it.
00:14No, I'm not familiar with it. I'm sorry, why are you calling me?
00:17I'm calling you because we do a segment on our show, it's called the Second Date Update.
00:21And what that is, is where if you go out on a date with somebody and then end up not calling them back after,
00:25they can email us to get you on the phone and ask what happens.
00:30So you went out on a date with a dude named Sean recently who listens to our show.
00:34Oh, God. He emailed you?
00:37Yes, Sean emailed and told us all about your date.
00:41Even the fact that he asked you to pretend to be his girlfriend for his grandparents.
00:45Oh, he told you that?
00:46Yes, he did. He admitted it and he admits that that was a big failure.
00:50And he knows that that's why you're not talking to him.
00:52And he was hoping that he could maybe explain himself a little bit more.
00:58I don't know that I want to talk to him.
01:00I mean, he's a pretty dishonest guy, obviously, if you know the story.
01:03So I don't really know what there is to talk about.
01:06It was an accident, though.
01:06Well, it wasn't an accident.
01:08An accident?
01:09Yeah.
01:09What did he say?
01:10Well, I mean, he said that you went along with the story and pretended to be his girlfriend
01:15while you were at the grandparents, and then as soon as you left, you, like, went just cold on him.
01:21Yeah, that's pretty accurate.
01:24I mean, I don't know what else someone would expect if they're going to do something like that.
01:28I mean...
01:28Why did you go along with it if you...
01:30I was under the impression, when we left the restaurant, that we were just going to, like,
01:34pop in and say hi to them, like, really quick.
01:37And he dropped this bombshell on me about this lie that he's told him in, like, the minute
01:42we're at the door.
01:42It's a super awkward situation.
01:44What am I supposed to do?
01:45Yeah.
01:46Like, are you going to blow him up right there in front of his grandparents, and now it's
01:49even more awkward than just suffering through it?
01:51By nature, I'm a really honest person, so, I mean, it was...
01:55One of the worst things about it to me was just the ease with which he lied to these people
01:59who love him.
02:01And not only that he could do it, that he wanted someone he just met to participate in
02:05that lie, with no account for my feelings.
02:08Yeah.
02:09Yeah, that's a pretty heavy observation that you just made right there.
02:12So, I mean, I just didn't have a good sense about him as a person at all.
02:15Like, as soon as that happened, I was like, that's terrible.
02:17He admits that he screwed up, and he knows that that's why you don't want to talk to him again,
02:21but he was hoping that, you know, we could get you on the phone and maybe explain things
02:25a little better.
02:26I don't know that that's necessary.
02:27I mean, it was a really frustrating date, and it was really...
02:30It was disappointing, but I got to tell you, like, it's actually, in the end, it was one
02:34of the best things that's happened to me in a long time.
02:36I'm actually not sorry that it happened, because really, a really good thing has come out of
02:40it, so...
02:41You decided to just stop dating in general, because everybody lies?
02:45She's like, I'm a monk now.
02:46Yeah, so you've given up dating.
02:48No, actually, what happened is, like, after...
02:51It went down.
02:51I felt guilty about it for days, and I knew when I was sitting there with these two just
02:56lovely people that he's introducing me to, that I'm not being myself.
03:00I'm looking them in the eye and lying to them and making something up, and it weighed on me.
03:05It weighed on my conscience.
03:06So I went back to his grandparents' house a few days later, and I told them.
03:10What?
03:11I was like, what happened?
03:11Of course.
03:12Oh.
03:13You told them all...
03:14You told them that you were pretending to be his girlfriend.
03:17I did.
03:17It came totally clean, and I was like, listen, if you're upset with me, I completely understand,
03:21but it bothered me to know that these two people with such generous hearts, who, like,
03:25welcomed me in, that I was basically...
03:27How do you know that they have such generous hearts and everything else?
03:29I mean, their grandson is a liar, and, you know, tends to run in the family, so maybe
03:35they're just as big of a liar, you know?
03:37Age doesn't have anything to do with the truth.
03:39No, no, no, no.
03:40You know what?
03:40I don't know why that particular apple fell so far from the tree.
03:45I have to tell you, like, they were so kind and understanding.
03:49They let me hang out.
03:50We chatted for hours.
03:52They've got this beautiful love story they met in Europe when they were, like, 15 and escaped
03:57the war.
03:57I mean, these are people who have, like, they get what's important in life.
04:01They get love and trust.
04:02You know more about his grandparents than he knows about his grandparents.
04:05I actually, you know, I don't have grandparents of my own, so I've kind of adopted them.
04:09You know, I mean, that's something I've always wanted in my life, and so I've been visiting
04:12him, like, every three or four days.
04:14No way!
04:15You're hanging out with his grandparents?
04:17That's so cute!
04:18That's weird, though.
04:19You guys, if you met them, you would completely understand why.
04:22And I told them I wasn't with him, and they were like, don't worry, he doesn't visit us
04:25that much anyway.
04:26This is even better!
04:28You know who'd be very interested to hear that, Teresa?
04:31Who?
04:32Well, Sean, of course.
04:33Yeah.
04:33Don't you think?
04:34Good luck.
04:35I mean, you know, I'm not talking to him, so it doesn't matter.
04:38Well, you kind of just told him, though, because he is actually on the other line listening
04:41and wants to talk to you.
04:42And I bet he wants his grandkids back.
04:44What?
04:45Sean, you still there?
04:46Yes.
04:47I'm here.
04:47Are you kidding me?
04:51No, I'm not kidding you.
04:53They've told me, like, how little they've seen and heard from you, and you lie to them.
04:57Oh!
04:57You're a crappy grandson.
04:58I don't know what else to tell you.
05:00Oh, my God!
05:00Teresa, that's not true.
05:02Not including Christmas, I've seen them at least, like, two or three times this year.
05:06Wow!
05:07That doesn't include Christmas.
05:08I've seen them four times this week, you tool.
05:12Oh, dang!
05:13I'm more of a granddaughter to them than you or a grandson.
05:16Like, I mean, you lied to them.
05:17They said to me, they're like, yeah, we don't trust him.
05:19He's lied to us about things before, like, your grades and stuff when you were in college,
05:23and then they found out later about things.
05:24They're on to you.
05:25You need to stop talking.
05:27I need to get a word in here, please.
05:29So you can tell me more lies?
05:30You want me to be quiet so you can lie?
05:32Oh, my God.
05:34Like, shut up for a second, because, first of all, I can't believe you're seeing my grandparents
05:38behind my back.
05:40That is messed up.
05:41Like, what?
05:42Sean, have you not talked to your grandparents since you guys went on that date?
05:46No, I haven't, but I don't think that that matters.
05:48I will talk to them.
05:49Oh, my God.
05:50It's been a month.
05:51You don't tell me when I talk to my grandparents or I visit them.
05:55I am a grown man.
05:56I'll do it when I want to do it.
05:59You know what?
05:59Your grandparents want you to grow up and settle down.
06:02Like, they said to me, they hope, I mean, you're not going to settle down with me.
06:05They think I'm too good for you, okay?
06:07So that's not going to happen.
06:08But they want you to meet someone nice, but they're like, you know, he does need to meet
06:11someone at his maturity level.
06:14My maturity level.
06:16Okay.
06:16I'll get right on that.
06:17Sean, I mean, it sounds like they had already found out that you lied to him in the past.
06:22It doesn't sound like that was really news to them.
06:24I feel like you thought you were getting away with stuff that you weren't.
06:27Are you guys on her side now, too?
06:29Everyone tells their grandparents little white lies.
06:32What?
06:32It makes them happy.
06:33I don't want them to worry about me.
06:36You're not making them happy.
06:37You're disappointing them all the time.
06:39That is not true.
06:41You know what?
06:41I forbid you from seeing them.
06:43I forbid it.
06:44You can't forbid me to see them.
06:45They're my friend.
06:46And you can't tell me who to be friends with.
06:48And you can't tell them who to be friends with, okay?
06:50That is up to Mort and Nancy, who they want to hang out with.
06:53Mort and Nancy.
06:54Oh, sweeter, Mort and Nancy.
06:55Don't you dare call Nana and Pop Pop by their first name.
06:58You are not their friend.
07:01You know what?
07:02You better watch that, Will, okay?
07:04Because let's see who's going to inherit it.
07:06Man, Sean, it sounds like you made a big mistake trying to get Teresa to play this game.
07:10She's taking over your family, actually.
07:13Can you, like, brainwash them?
07:14Are you, like, just taking advantage of two poor little old people who escaped the war?
07:20I mean, I swear.
07:22Like, it sounds like, to me, like, you're just taking advantage of two old people for your own personal fulfillment.
07:27Oh.
07:28Yeah, well, you know, it's pretty emotionally fulfilling to them.
07:31They like being visited, okay?
07:33They like, like, when people come and treat them like they're family and that they matter.
07:37And they're not just, like, people who should be put out to pasture because they're old and you're not interested.
07:42Wow.
07:42Sean, I don't know if you want to argue with her anymore.
07:44Yeah, she's kind of intense.
07:46She's winning.
07:47Teresa, would you like to go out with Sean again on a second date?
07:50We'll pay for it.
07:50I mean, I don't even know if Sean wants to go out at this point, but I don't know of a way to wrap it up.
07:55Teresa, would you like to go out with Sean?
07:57I would love it if you would pay Sean to take his grandparents out for a nice dinner somewhere.
08:02That's a really nice thought.
08:04I would love that.
08:05Because that would mean a lot to them.
08:06Hey, Sean.
08:07Oh, Sean.
08:08What?
08:08What do you want?
08:10I like Teresa's idea, but instead I'm going to pay for Teresa to go out with your grandparents because I think she's more important to them at this point.
08:18Sean, are you kidding me?
08:21No, I'm not.
08:22Congratulations, Teresa.
08:23I would be delighted and Morton Nancy would be delighted.
