00:00If you've ever heard a military plane roar overhead, sounding like it's about to break the sound barrier,
00:06then you've heard billions of dollars in motion.
00:09The military is known for spending billions of dollars to test, develop, and build equipment.
00:15But exactly how much does each weapon cost them?
00:19Put on your armor and strap yourself in,
00:22because today we're going to take a look at the 5 most expensive weapons ever made.
00:27Number 5. The Boeing FA-18EF Super Hornet $90.8 million
00:33The Super Hornet is a beast of a plane, a beast of a weapon, and it has a beast of a price tag,
00:41ringing in at $90.8 million per plane.
00:45For the cost of one of these, you could give every single person in San Francisco 90 bucks,
00:50and you'd still have a couple million left to spare.
00:53The plane weighs about 47,000 pounds, fully loaded, and can reach speeds of 1,190 miles per hour.
01:02So, what kind of defense technology and weapons are worth $90.8 million?
01:08The fighter jet has 11 weapon stations,
01:11which includes two wing stations that will support a full armament of air-to-air missiles,
01:16air-to-ground missiles, and air-to-ground bombs.
01:19The fighter jet is also equipped with a 20mm Gatling gun,
01:24which has a firing rate of an astounding 6,000 shots per minute.
01:28Needless to say, this little jet can do a lot of damage.
01:32Aside from one airshow mishap,
01:34the Super Hornets haven't been involved in any accidents,
01:38or been shot down by any enemy planes.
01:40Due, in part, to an $82 million contract Boeing was awarded by the Navy
01:45to develop an infrared search and track system for the fighter jet.
01:50All in all, the total cost of developing, researching, and manufacturing these jets
01:55and their weapon and defense systems is estimated to be about $57.8 billion.
02:00Number 4, the F-35 Lightning II, $82 to $103 million.
02:08You never do hear about a fighter jet or warship named the Butterfly or the Sheep, do you?
02:13The military rightfully steers towards more aggressive and cool-sounding names,
02:18and the F-35 Lightning II is no exception.
02:22This is a fighter jet that moves like lightning,
02:25clocking in at around 1,200 miles per hour, with an engine thrust of 43,000 pounds.
02:32The F-35 Lightning was intended to be a low-cost alternative to other jets,
02:37offering three separate stealth planes, the F-35A through C, to be used for different functions.
02:44The plane rings in from between $82 to $103 million apiece, depending on which model it is.
02:51All models have superior sensors and radar systems,
02:54with the capability to arrange weapons in whatever way is needed for the mission at hand.
02:59While the planes are low-cost compared to the other planes on our list,
03:02integrating the F-35 Lightning into the military as a whole came with a huge price tag.
03:08Notable for being cheap to buy, expensive to fly,
03:12the jets cost an estimated $45,000 to fly for one single hour over their lifetime.
03:19They're expected to cost around $350 million apiece to maintain,
03:24which is about a trillion dollars, the entire fleet.
03:27Number 3. The F-22 Raptor. $200 million.
03:32This is the F-22 Raptor.
03:35Yes, it looks like something out of Star Wars.
03:37Unfortunately, it can't quite make the jump into hyperspace,
03:41but it can reach up to double the speed of sound, or Mach 2, which is almost as cool.
03:46Star Wars aside, the F-22 Raptor is one out of this world's stealth jet.
03:52Costing around $200 million per plane, it ought to be one.
03:56The F-22 Raptor is able to produce more thrust than any other plane in the world.
04:02That, coupled with its sophisticated aerodynamic design and advanced flight controls,
04:07allow the F-22 to outmaneuver any enemy plane it's up against.
04:12And its biggest benefit, no other plane is able to see it coming.
04:17It's called a stealth plane for a reason,
04:19but the F-22 Raptor takes that title to a whole different level.
04:24Like most stealth planes, the F-22 integrates radar-absorbent materials
04:29and specific airframe shaping to minimize the amount the plane is visible on radar and from the ground.
04:36If you are wondering why it looks so Star Wars-esque, well, that's your answer.
04:41Naturally, a plane that was made for stealth and attack has a few weapons on board.
04:46In addition to a 20mm cannon that carries 480 rounds,
04:51the plane is fit to allow for several combinations of heat-seeking missiles,
04:55JDAM-equipped bombs, and radar-guided air-to-air missiles.
05:00So, how far do you want to stay away from one of these things?
05:03Though the plane's radar range is classified,
05:06a pilot disclosed that they have seen targets beyond 320 miles.
05:12Though I can't exactly verify that,
05:14since I can promise I haven't been in one of these things.
05:17That's quite an astounding difference.
05:19Number 2, the DDG-51 Destroyer, 1.843 billion.
05:25Ah, finally, we've made our way off of planes
05:28and landed onto something a little better for people who don't fancy heights.
05:33The DDG-51 Destroyer, also known as the Arleigh Burke-class destroyer,
05:38costs 1.843 billion dollars per ship.
05:43While that may seem like an insane amount, mainly because it is,
05:47keep in mind that this ship is able to house 350 servicemen and women.
05:53The ship, which is almost the length of two football fields,
05:56has a lot of weapons on board to make up for that price tag.
06:00Capable of carrying over 900 missiles,
06:03the ship is equipped with two vertical-launching systems
06:06that are able to deploy tomahawk missiles.
06:09Of course, the ship is also fitted with superior defense,
06:12radar, and navigation tools,
06:14as well as an advanced mine detection system.
06:17While the ship was first made in 1991,
06:20that doesn't mean it isn't still being produced today.
06:24Just in 2018,
06:25the Navy contracted a company for 4.8 billion dollars to build more.
06:30If you want to hear more about the company they contracted,
06:33and how much these other companies are making off of our war production,
06:36please feel free to check out my other video on it in the link in the description.
06:40And moving on to number one,
06:42the Virginia submarine,
06:442.8 billion dollars.
06:46Finally, we've reached the most expensive military weapon.
06:50Will it be a fighter jet,
06:51a ship,
06:52or some type of nuclear weapon?
06:54Well, if you guessed the last one,
06:56you're almost right.
06:57Virginia-class submarines are nuclear attack submarines.
07:01Indeed,
07:02these bad boys aren't exactly a Jacques Cousteau,
07:05Beatles' yellow submarine type of sub.
07:07Their price reflects that at a startling 2.8 billion dollars apiece.
07:12That's Billion with a capital B.
07:15When we dive in and take a look at what this submarine is packing,
07:18that price might make a little more sense.
07:20The Virginia-class submarine can carry about 40 different weapons at a time.
07:25With two vertical launching systems capable of firing Tomahawk missiles,
07:30the Virginia-class submarine certainly has safety on its side.
07:33The sub is capable of moving between 25 and 35 knots,
07:38and the most exciting part is,
07:40it can do that almost indefinitely.
07:43Being nuclear-powered,
07:44this sub is only limited in range by the amount of food it can store for its crew
07:49and the occasional maintenance it requires.
07:51I'm not sure about how that sounds to all of you,
07:54but being underwater about 800 feet with a nuclear reactor
07:57doesn't exactly appeal to me,
07:59even with all those weapons on board.
08:01So, there you have it.
08:03The five most expensive weapons ever made.
08:06Which one do you think is the best use of our money?
