Dwayne Johnson shares his story with depression which started when he was rejected by the NFL.
Transcript
00:00When I was 23, I was cut from the CFL after I was not drafted in the NFL.
00:07I had to move back in with my parents in a small apartment in Tampa.
00:11And again, dreams dashed.
00:14You work so hard, and then somebody's saying that,
00:17well, you're just not good enough, and you gotta go home.
00:21And at 23, you think life is over.
00:24I fell into a deep depression, and I remember at that time,
00:27and the only thing I wanted to do was clean the walls.
00:35I grabbed some cleaner and a rag, and for days, I would clean.
00:43I cleaned everything.
00:44It was just the only thing I can control.
00:48I found that with depression, one of the most important things you could realize is that you're not alone.
00:54You're not the first to go through it.
00:55You're not gonna be the last to go through it.
00:57And oftentimes, it happens.
00:59You just feel like you're alone, and you feel like it's only you, and you're in your bubble.
01:05And I wish I had someone at that time who could just pull me aside and say, hey, it's gonna be okay.
01:16It's gonna be okay.
01:17So I wish I knew that.
01:18You just gotta remember, hold on to that fundamental quality of faith.
01:24Have faith that on the other side of your pain is something good.
01:32After about a month and a half of staying in that little apartment and cleaning,
01:39I got a phone call from the head coach of the team who cut me, the head coach of the Calgary Stampeders.
01:45He called me, and he said, hey, I know we cut you, but I'd like you to come back.
01:49I said, okay, I appreciate that, coach.
01:51Thank you very much.
01:52I'll think about it.
01:53He said, okay, great.
01:53I hung up the phone, and my dad said, you're gonna do it, right?
01:58I said, no, I don't think so.
02:01I think I'm done with that.
02:03And he goes, what?
02:05I said, my gut tells me I'm done.
02:08He said, what are you gonna do?
02:11I took a deep breath.
02:12I said, I'd like to get into the business.
02:15He said, what business?
02:16I said, the wrestling business.
02:19He said, you are throwing it all away.
02:21It is the worst mistake you will ever make.
02:25He said, you're ruining your career.
02:28I said, maybe I'll be no good.
02:32But I feel like in my heart I have to do this.
02:36And I either need you to train me or need you to not train me.
02:47My dad rose to the occasion.
02:49He said, I'll train you.
02:49And it wound up being one of the greatest chapters in my life.
02:54And I'm going to tell you about this.
03:09I'll be fine.
03:10I'll be fine.
