00:00The U.S. Supreme Court upheld on Wednesday Tennessee's ban on gender-affirming care for children.

00:07The justices ruled 6-3 that the 2023 law restricting minors' access to treatments such as puberty blockers was not discrimination.

00:16Chief Justice John Roberts wrote that the ruling does not violate the Constitution's Equal Protection Clause,

00:22which requires the government to treat similarly situated people the same.

00:26The three liberal judges on the panel denounced the ruling, arguing that it may have profound impacts.

00:32Justice Sonia Sotomayor stressed that the ruling effectively abandons trans children and their families to political whims.

00:39The case also provides protection to many efforts by the Trump administration to roll back protections for transgender people.

00:46The ruling can now be used as precedent by 26 other states which have similar laws to Tennessee.

00:52Since returning to office, Trump has moved to define sexes as male and female,

00:58banned transgender athletes from women's sports, and restricted their access to public spaces.

01:04The Supreme Court has also previously granted Trump the freedom to kick trans service members out of the military despite ongoing lawsuits.
