The Joker is not a man to be trifled with - Especially if you're another Batman villain.
Transcript
00:00The Joker is nothing if not generous with his hatred, and although he reserves plenty for
00:08Batman, he's got some to go around for pretty much everyone, even other villains. You'd think
00:13maybe the rogues of DC might get along, what with the amount of evil team-ups they've orchestrated
00:18over the years, but when the Joker's involved, ain't nobody laughing but the clown prince himself.
00:24With that in mind, I'm Will for What Culture, and here are 10 comics villains humiliated
00:28by the Joker. 10, Maxi Zeus. It's always interesting to see two villains face off,
00:34which we got in Batman Cacophony. At a time when Maxi Zeus and the Joker were fighting for leadership
00:39of the criminal underground in Gotham, an attempt by Zeus to talk the Joker into surrendering goes
00:44horribly off the rails. Zeus tells Joker if he doesn't give up their quarrel and let him take
00:48over, he'll crush him like a bug. In turn, the Joker, who is understandably miffed, attacks not
00:54Maxi, but his nephew, by blowing up the kid and his entire school. Killing kids is nothing new for
01:01the Joker, but even for him, this seems a bit much. It did, however, force Maxi to surrender,
01:06which is all Joker wanted in the first place. 9, Catwoman. The Joker loves a good party. In one case,
01:12the clown prince of crime decides to throw himself a birthday bash. As a present to himself, he sends
01:18his henchmen out to kidnap notable Gothamites who've interfered in his schemes at one time or another.
01:23Unfortunately for Selina Kyle, this includes Catwoman. Joker ties his various acquisitions
01:29to giant explosive candles in front of a crowd of thousands of people lured into a stadium
01:34for a free bakery show. Yeah, the 80s were an odd time for comics. Batman arrives to be the final
01:40candle, but as always, outsmarts the Joker and frees not only Catwoman, but all the other kidnapped
01:45victims. Still, the Joker had Catwoman dead to rights without Batman's intervention.
01:508, Bane. This one is from the first of the excellent Arkham video games. During the storyline,
01:56Joker, under his alias Jack White, had Bane transferred to Arkham from Blackgate Prison.
02:01This was all part of a plan to create a newer, stronger version of Bane's venom called Titan.
02:06When Batman first encounters Bane in the game, he is hanging in chains, withered and helpless.
02:11Bane explains that Joker and Dr. Young drained the venom from him. Bane begs Batman to rescue him,
02:17but before Bruce can do so, Joker pumps Bane full of Titan, turning him into a mindless brute,
02:22and causing a major boss fight to ensue between the two old adversaries. Bane is a proud and vain
02:29man, constantly displaying both his powerful physique and superior intellect. To see that the
02:34Joker broke him down to the point of begging Batman for help is truly a victory for the madman.
02:407, Carnage. In September of 1995, during a Marvel DC crossover, circumstances brought together Joker
02:48and the homicidal symbiote Carnage. In a complicated story involving control chips that were supposed to
02:54both dampen Joker's and Carnage's psychosis, but failed, Spider-Man ends up in Gotham helping Batman.
03:00However, Joker quickly realises that Carnage's brand of mass murder has, in his own words,
03:04no style or theatre, and he compares the symbiote's work to that of David Hasselhoff.
03:10This enrages Carnage, and the Joker then takes his first hit at the monster by sneaking out of
03:14their hideout and blowing it to tiny bits, apparently killing the symbiote. Later, Carnage,
03:20who survived, is preparing a death blow against Batman. Joker once again intervenes,
03:25threatening him with Joker toxin, allowing Batman to subdue Carnage and psychologically wear him down
03:30back into Cassidy. It was a solid victory for the Joker, who humiliated the upstart symbiote for
03:36coming onto his home turf. 6, The Riddler. The War of Jokes and Riddles was set during Batman's
03:43second year as a crime fighter. Essentially, across six issues, the Riddler and the Joker go to war over
03:48who has the right to kill Batman, forcing the rest of Batman's rogues gallery to choose a side.
03:53The finale of the series involves Joker, Riddler, Batman, and Kite Man finally sorting out who's won.
03:58With the Riddler having lost his allies and then being beaten up by Kite Man, it's a pretty clear
04:03victory to the Joker. Joker then takes it one step further after Bruce is willing to kill the Riddler
04:08for all he's done and saves his life, too, showing him that he's not even worthy of being Batman's
04:14first kill, either. 5, Poison Ivy. Throughout season one of the excellent Harley Quinn show,
04:20Poison Ivy grows increasingly aware that despite her relationship with Kite Man, she is falling in
04:25love with Harley. Harley, for her part, is fighting the same growing feelings, all of which Joker
04:30knows. This culminates in the second to last episode of the first season. During a battle
04:34against the Joker, he forces a giant Ivy to go against everything she stands for by killing
04:39dozens of sentient trees who are attacking Gotham Park. After the battle, with our heroes appearing
04:44to have won the day, Joker allows Harley and Ivy one moment of togetherness and reconciliation
04:50before harpooning Ivy through the chest with a giant spear. Oof.
04:554, Red Skull. Another gem from a Marvel DC crossover, this was a wonderful story set
05:00during World War II when Captain America and Batman teamed up to take on the Nazis in general
05:05and the team of Joker and the Red Skull specifically. However, there comes a little twist in the tale.
05:11The Joker, who believed the Red Skull to be just another costumed villain, is appalled when
05:15he learns that he's been working with a Nazi. As he says, I may be a criminal lunatic, but
05:20I'm an American criminal lunatic. Joker then helps our heroes sabotage the Skull's plans
05:26and fail his mission in spectacular fashion. 3, Lex Luthor. In the DCAU series of episodes
05:33called World's Finest, Joker and Luthor team up to take on Batman and Superman. After a series
05:39of misadventures, Luthor predictably double-crosses Joker and threatens to kill both him and Harley.
05:44Joker manages to turn the tables and capture Lex and his assistant, Mercy, before telling
05:49Lex he's going to take his revenge by destroying both LexCorp and Metropolis. Much to Lex's
05:54annoyance, he is rescued by the heroes, loses an airship, Bruce terminates a multi-billion
05:59dollar partnership with Lex, and on top of all that, the Joker gets away.
06:042, Black Mask. Batman Under the Red Hood is a solid retelling of the story of Jason Todd's
06:09death and subsequent rebirth as the vigilante Red Hood. One of the central pieces of the
06:14story is that Red Hood is warring with another member of Batman's rogue's gallery, Black Mask,
06:19for control of the Gotham underworld. Black Mask grows so desperate that he breaks Joker
06:23out of Arkham and pays him to stop the Red Hood. Even after Joker immediately kills four of Mask's
06:29henchmen right in front of him, he doesn't see a problem with teaming up with the Joker.
06:33A costly mistake. In short order, Joker betrayed Black Mask and his henchmen, playing them for
06:38complete fools. He almost kills them and admits to only using them to draw out Red Hood and Batman.
06:451, Harley Quinn. Oh man, where do we even start? The Joker and Harley Quinn's dysfunctional relationship
06:51has been a hallmark of their stories since Harley was introduced in the DCAU in 1992, which makes it
06:58all the sadder that the Joker has endlessly tormented Harley for the simple act of loving him. There is an
07:04endless list of terrible things Joker has done to Harley, but suffice it to say that there's barely
07:09a crime in existence he hasn't committed against her, murder included. Perhaps the saddest part of
07:15all is that every time, almost without fail, Harley returns to her puddin', only for the cycle to repeat
07:21itself all over again. Harley has recently broken free of the Joker in numerous adaptations and revisions
07:27on the character, but the specter of his influence over her life will never leave. More than anyone
07:33in DC Comics, more even than Batman, Harley Quinn is the person the Joker has damaged the most.
