00:00Is it illegal to let your pet walk without a leash in public?
00:03Here's the quick rundown.
00:09The Animal Welfare Board of India's 2015 guidelines clearly say
00:14that your residential welfare association, your RWA,
00:18cannot ban pets from apartments or deny them access to lifts and parks.
00:23That's good news.
00:24But yes, always keep your dog leashed when you're out and about
00:28because the RWA can set certain timings
00:31for when pets might not be allowed in community parks
00:35as long as it's agreed upon by everyone.
00:37And remember to clean up after your pet.
00:40Leaving dog poop around is not okay.
00:43And local municipal laws such as those in Noida for example,
00:46in fact allow RWAs to find pet owners who don't pick up after their dogs.
00:52Safety matters most
00:53because under section 291 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sahita,
00:58if you are negligent,
00:59for example, you let your pet off the leash
01:01or let it roam freely
01:03and you're not controlling it
01:04and it bites someone or hurts someone.
01:07You can face a fine of 5,000 rupees
01:10and even six months in jail.
01:12But don't worry,
01:13a barking or simply scaring someone is not punishable.
01:17Actual harm caused to the person is of real concern.
01:20So enjoy your time with your pets
01:22but stay responsible.
