00:00U.S. President Donald Trump is expected to sign an executive order this week to extend by 90 days the deadline for the Chinese owner of TikTok to divest from the social media platform.
00:14It's the third time Trump has delayed enforcement of a congressionally mandated ban on the app,
00:20which was originally set to take effect in January unless the company had sold or made significant progress towards selling its U.S. assets.
00:30After starting his second presidential term, Trump extended the deadline to early April and then again to the 19th of June,
00:40after the app helped to boost his support among young voters in the 2024 election.
00:45A deal to transfer TikTok's U.S. operations to a U.S.-run firm was also shelved in spring,
00:53after China backed out following Trump's announcement of global tariffs.
00:58Democratic senators argue Trump lacks the legal authority to extend the deadline
01:05and claim the proposed deal falls short of legal requirements.
