What is Ramadaan- by Dr.Zakir Naik #what #is #ramadan #ramzan #ramazan
Transcript
00:00So could you firstly define the term Ramadan?
00:03Alhamdulillah, wassalatu wassalam ala rasulillah wa ala alihi wasabi ajma'in.
00:09The word Ramadan is derived from the Arabic word Ramida or Arramad,
00:15which means intense scorching heat and dryness.
00:19It's also derived from the Arabic word Ramda, which means sun-baked sand.
00:25In Islamic terminology, the word Ramadan, it signifies the intense heat in the stomach due to thirst.
00:36When a Muslim fasts, the thirst that is there, it produces heat in the stomach, which is defined as Ramadan.
00:46Again Ramadan, it has another meaning.
00:49It means that the good deeds, they scorch the sins and the evil of a Muslim.
00:58So Ramadan is a month in which the sins are scorched away by the good deeds,
01:04like how a sun scorches the ground in the same way.
01:08And heat normally, it helps in forming, molding or reshaping virtually every matter.
01:20In the same way, Ramadan helps in molding, shaping and reforming the spiritual and the moral aspects of the human being.
01:30That is the reason we term this word Ehramna.
01:34Second definition of terms, if you like, is Som or Fast, as it's sometimes or mostly it's translated in English.
01:45Could you shed some light on what are the implications of the term Fast or Som?
01:52Som is an Arabic word, which is singular.
01:56Siyam means plural.
01:58Som or Siyam in Arabic is derived from the word Samah,
02:03which means to abstain or to restrain from the normal things,
02:07whether it be eating, drinking or talking.
02:11And a person who observes Som or abstains from these things is called as a Saim.
02:18And this word is used in the Quran in Surah Maryam, chapter number 19, verse number 26.
02:25When the angel speaks to Mary, may Allah be pleased with her,
02:30who is the mother of J.S. K.S., peace be upon him, and this word is used.
02:33And if you read this word, it says that I have vowed to fast to Allah.
02:39But here, the meaning of the word Som, fast, doesn't mean refraining from eating or drinking.
02:47It means refraining from speaking.
02:49Because when we go to the context, when we read one verse before in the Quran,
02:54Surah Maryam, chapter number 19, verse number 25,
02:58it says that Allah says to Mary, that shake the palm tree towards yourself and the ripe dates will fall.
03:09And the next verse, Surah Maryam, chapter 19, verse 26, says,
03:12eat and drink from them.
03:15And then it says that when you meet any human being,
03:18tell them I have vowed to fast for Allah and I will not speak to any human being.
03:24So because here it says about speaking, the word Som used here means that to abstain from speaking.
03:32But the word Som, in Islamic terminology, in the Islamic Sharia,
03:38it means a person who does an act of worship.
03:45And with intention, he does it for the sake of Allah, subhanahu wa ta'ala.
03:49And he or she abstains from eating, drinking, or nourishment,
03:57as well as from sectional intercourse or from lustful simon ejaculation.
04:05In short, the word Som in Islam means a person who abstains from the fast breakers.
04:13And the fast breakers, the things that break the fast,
04:17are food, whether taken by mouth or by nose,
04:22or drink, any kind of drink, whether it be water, milk, fruit,
04:27just any drink taken from mouth or nose,
04:29or any nourishment for the body taken from any source,
04:34as well as abstaining from a sectional intercourse.
04:39In short, it means abstaining the stomach and the private part.
04:45This is what it means islamically.
04:48And this is the basic meaning.
04:51But if you go ahead with the broader meaning,
04:54it does not mean only abstaining the stomach and the sexual part
04:59from the things that break the fast,
05:01it even means that along with the fasting of the stomach
05:05and the sexual parts,
05:06there is fasting of the tongue,
05:10of the eyes, of the ears,
05:12and the other limbs of the body.
05:14That is the reason when we use the word Som,
05:17our beloved Prophet Muhammad SAW said,
05:19it's mentioning Sahih Bukhari, volume number 3,
05:23in the book of fasting,
05:24Hadith number 1903,
05:25our beloved Prophet said that a person who does not abstain,
05:29does not leave false action and false speech,
05:33obsolete, etc.
05:35Allah does not require of him
05:37to abstain from food and drink.
05:41That means,
05:42beside abstaining from food and drink,
05:43you also have to abstain from false speech,
05:46false actions, etc.
05:48And this message is further repeated
05:49by our beloved Prophet Muhammad SAW.
05:51Our beloved Prophet Muhammad SAW said,
05:53in the Sai Hadith of Sai Targib,
05:56Mohd number 1,
05:57Hadith number 1068,
05:59the beloved Prophet said,
06:00that a person,
06:03while fasting,
06:04when he abstains from food and drink,
06:07he should also abstain from false speech,
06:11from obscene language.
06:12And,
06:13if a person gets angry,
06:15and if he argues with him,
06:16or fights with him,
06:17he should say,
06:18I am fasting, I am fasting.
06:20So,
06:22if we look at it,
06:24when a person fasts,
06:26there are basically,
06:27three things,
06:28that he should abstain from.
06:30Number 1,
06:31is,
06:32the stomach,
06:33and the private parts.
06:35They should abstain,
06:36from things that break the fast,
06:38that is,
06:38food,
06:39drink,
06:39and sexual act.
06:41The second is,
06:42that the other parts of the body,
06:44the tongue,
06:45the eyes,
06:46the ears,
06:47the limbs,
06:47even they should fast.
06:50Fasting of the tongue means,
06:52a person,
06:52should abstain from backbiting,
06:55should abstain from sandering,
06:57from telling a lie,
06:59should abstain from gossiping,
07:01abstain from rumor mongering,
07:03abstain from vulgarity.
07:06Fasting of the eyes means,
07:07he should abstain,
07:08from looking at things,
07:10which are unlawful.
07:11Like when he said,
07:12he should lower his gaze.
07:14He should not,
07:15watch un-Islamic movies.
07:16or un-Islamic things.
07:21Fasting of the ears means,
07:23should abstain,
07:24from hearing things,
07:25which are haram,
07:26which are prohibited.
07:28Like abstain from,
07:29listening to music.
07:31Abstain from listening to,
07:33songs which are un-Islamic.
07:35So this is the way,
07:36how,
07:37the other parts of the body also fast.
07:39And the third thing is,
07:41the fasting,
07:42of the heart,
07:43and the mind.
07:43They should abstain from things,
07:46which take away person,
07:48from the worship of Allah,
07:50from the zikr of Allah.
07:51So this,
07:53overall,
07:53is the meaning of the word,
07:55psalm.
07:57Subhanallah,
07:58it certainly has a lot more,
08:00involved in it,
08:01than I was expecting.
