00:00Hi, I'm Izzy Lewis, the headteacher at St George's Beneficial Primary School.
00:04So tell me what we're doing here today.
00:07Today we are celebrating all things John Pounds.
00:10So it's John Pounds' birthday today and we've had a good old-fashioned sing-along
00:14with some of our parents and members of our local community.
00:17And this is one of a series of events that we have done for our 270th anniversary.
00:23So St George's Beneficial is 270 years old
00:27and we think that's amazing and worth celebrating.
00:30Yeah, so just tell me a little bit more about that.
00:32So yeah, how do you feel about getting to this milestone and like celebrating?
00:36I think it's always really exciting when a school reaches a special anniversary,
00:40be it 50 years, 10 years, 100 years.
00:42But to be 270 and still supporting the families in this area of the city
00:47makes us all really proud and I've been at the school for two years now
00:50and knowing that being here sort of ties in with this exciting anniversary is really special
00:56because it's helped me get to know our families and our communities really well.
01:00And I feel it's a privilege to have been part of this.
01:02Tell me what the reaction's been like from the children and the parents.
01:06The children are always up for things that are fun or a little bit against the tide.
01:11So as I said before, our year ones had done some work about John Pounds
01:15and I'd written a book to support them and we did a special assembly about him.
01:18And lots of different year groups have taken things on.
01:20And later on in the week, we've got some other events and a bit of a birthday party as well.
01:25So the children love all of those things.
01:27And tell me why it's important, it's an obvious question,
01:29but tell me why it's important to celebrate these anniversaries and milestones
01:33and to learn about John Pounds.
01:35So this is an incredible city.
01:37It's full of such rich culture and heritage and it's not something that we want to lose.
01:41We want to make sure that our children really understand how brilliant and amazing it is
01:46to be part of Portsea and Portsmouth.
01:47So when you have such an incredible philanthropist like John Pounds,
01:51it's just natural that you'd want to celebrate the good things they do
01:54and hope that some of that rubs off on some of our community
01:57and this community keeps going from strength to strength and keeps growing.
02:01So as I said before, I think any anniversary is exciting,
02:04but being 270, that's some age.
