Premier grand moment de vérité sur ce Giro Next Gen ! Les jeunes prétendants au maillot Rose et à la victoire finale du Tour d'Italie U23 avaient rendez-vous ce mardi 17 juin sur cette 3e étape au Passo del Maniva (19.2 km à 5.7%), théâtre de la première arrivée au sommet de la semaine. Au terme d'un scénario limpide, le peloton est arrivé groupé au pied du juge de paix final, puis le rythme imposé a progressivement fait le tri parmi les leaders, avant que les meilleurs grimpeurs ne se livrent une superbe bataille dans les derniers kilomètres. Après plusieurs banderilles inefficaces de Jørgen Nordhagen (Visma | Lease a Bike), c'est ensuite Lorenzo Finn (Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe Rookies) qui a placé la première grosse offensive à 2,3 km de la ligne. L'Italien n'a été suivi que par le tenant du titre Jarno Widar (Lotto Development Team), et les deux hommes se sont finalement joués la victoire au sprint... remporté très facilement par le Belge grâce à son irrésistible kick dans les derniers mètres !
