Doncaster MPs Sally Jameson and Lee Pitcher spoke during a debate in the House of Commons on breast cancer screenings. After local health bosses revealed uptake in Doncaster was "unacceptable"

00:00screened. Could I welcome that the members for Doncaster Central and Don Valley and the Isle of
00:05Axelm are in their place for the debate today. The data from Doncaster and Bassett Law Hospital
00:11covers all our constituencies and whilst I understand we can presume that low attendance
00:17levels are in our more deprived wards, can the Minister provide advice on what more the
00:22department can do to ensure that we can get hospital specific data for things like breast
00:27cancer screening uptake.
00:31Sally Jemison.
00:32Thank you Madam Deputy Speaker. Does the Honourable Member agree with me that it is absolutely
00:37critical that we get this data to that level so that trusts like ours, Doncaster and Bassett
00:42Law Trust can actually target the areas and perhaps even the age groups where screening
00:47take up is at its lowest?
00:49Claire White.
00:50Thank you. Thank you very much for your contribution. I certainly agree with you. We have data yet
00:55so I'm not sure where the lowest figures are and I would very much like to go into the
01:00wards in my areas where perhaps take up is low and actually knock on doors and encourage
01:05women to go for their screening and so it would be very very helpful if we could have precise
01:10hospital data because there's two hospitals in the Doncaster and Bassett Law Trust. There
01:19are several organisations across Bassett Law who support people with cancer and I wish to
01:23highlight the work of Aurora in Worksop who offer support for those during and after cancer
01:29treatment. From their experience, from the service they provide from exercise space to beauty
01:36treatments to emotional support or even just a cup of tea with a friendly face and a listening
01:41ear. Organisations like these and our constituencies are the unsung heroes for people going through
01:47the challenge that is cancer treatment.
01:49At that point I want you to give away. I thank my honourable friend and neighbour for giving
01:54away and I congratulate her on this important debate this evening and the campaign that she
01:59is leading around women and men being screened for breast cancer early. Of course we know that
02:05the uptake is very low nationally and it is a problem as she has said in Doncaster East and
02:11the Isle of Axone. I would like to highlight though the incredible work that's done by places like
02:15Visit Balktree who turned the town pink last year in October during Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Over
02:2170 organisations and raising £15,000 for breast cancer charities but most importantly amplifying that
02:29message that it's important to get early detection in order to save lives. Would my honourable friend agree with
02:35me that these kind of grassroots organisation efforts are vital and the government must support them
02:40but also support them with improved screening access and public health messaging.
02:44Can I thank you for the comments that you've made. I certainly agree Balktree is just across the border from my constituency and I know Balktree has a very very strong community and when I go through their times I can see how many people come out the streets to support one another so I'm sure it is a very very strong campaign.
