00:00And Summer Glau, who co-stars on Terminator, the Sarah Connor Chronicles, needs no makeover.
00:06It's perfect the way it is right now.
00:07She plays a robot sent from the future to protect John Connor, who's played by Thomas Decker.
00:13Let's go. Come on. Thank you. Cell phones, caps, rings, and...
00:16Again with you, Missy.
00:20Come through.
00:25Excuse me. This is my sister.
00:28I owe you credit for you.
00:28Oh, she's got a metal plate in her head.
00:31Really, it's a big one.
00:39I fell. Hard.
00:42All right. Let's go.
00:45Welcome!
00:47You are gorgeous, my darling.
00:49Thank you, too. Welcome. Please.
00:50Come to our...
00:51Hi, Summer.
00:52Hi.
00:53Lovely fantasy land.
00:54Nice to see you.
00:56Hello.
00:57No, really.
00:57So you have a plate in your head. That's very unfortunate.
01:02There's a lot of metal going on in you, on the show.
01:05And I thought that was such a funny idea. I usually set it off anyway, with my belts and my...
01:10In the metal.
01:11Oh, it's a nightmare nowadays, especially at the airport.
01:13You have a... We should tell people, you have that arm, right? That's the Terminator arm.
01:18Well, you're like bionic girl.
01:19Well, I spent a lot of time in makeup today, so you can't tell.
01:22Uh-huh. To cover it up.
01:23Now, is a lot of it done? Because this looks like a really expensive show to shoot in the sense that it's got so much CG and special effects.
01:30Yeah.
01:31Yeah, it does. It does. But I think that TV is ready for this series now, you know, because we're at a point where we're able to do these kind of special effects.
01:39It's amazing.
01:40Now, when you first came on, I wasn't so sure if you were good or bad.
01:43Well, I'm good right now. I'm good right now, but we don't know about the past and the future.
01:51Mark is hoping you'll be bad in the future at some point.
01:54Yeah, like very bad.
01:56How do I get involved in this?
01:57I'm going to be bad.
01:57Yeah.
01:59Because there are good Terminators and there are bad Terminators.
02:04That's right.
02:04That's the point.
02:05Did you ever watch? Did you ever see the original? Because you must have been like, what?
02:07Were you even bored?
02:08Well, I didn't see them yet. I hadn't seen them until I was cast.
02:12Which is maybe a better thing, I think, sometimes as an actor, so you don't have that preconceived notion.
02:17Well, there would be, but I think everyone knows what Terminator is, even if you haven't seen the movies.
02:22And I thought, why did I get an audition for this? I was nervous to go in at all.
02:27Because, you know, Arnold, in the movies, he was bad, the bad guy first.
02:32And then when they brought the sequel back, then he turned to be a good Terminator, right?
02:34So you're saying, similarly on the show, there could be bad Terminators that turn good and good that might turn bad?
02:41Absolutely.
02:42And you just never know.
02:43I'm glad you understood what Mark said, because I was, like, really confused.
02:46I was getting lost a little bit myself.
02:48Yeah, totally.
02:49So now, what is going on with the strike, then with the writer's strike?
02:52You guys are, have you already shot all your episodes? You okay?
02:54We didn't finish, but we have nine.
02:56Oh, nice.
02:57We shot an episode that's going to be a great finale for us for a rounded season.
03:02I feel really relieved that we finished that episode, because it's going to be good.
03:07It's a good season.
03:09Our writers are amazing.
03:11I can't wait to go back.
03:12Yeah.
03:12Miss everybody.
03:13I want to ask you a little something about the process of getting this role.
03:18Do they make you do, like, physical stuff in addition to the reads, or are they just concerned
03:21about line reads when you go in and audition for a part like this?
03:23I didn't have to do anything physical in the audition, but I have done some action work
03:28before in film, and I sat outside.
03:33I was waiting after my test, and I heard them watching my fight scenes.
03:37Oh, that must be greener.
03:38It was.
03:39It was.
03:40But Terminator fighting is very different from martial arts.
03:43Because why?
03:44Is a lot of it done green screen, or is it no?
03:46Because you just bash everything.
03:47You just break everything.
03:48You grab something, you throw it across the room.
03:50You know, I get to, when I did martial arts, it was really hard.
03:54Yeah.
03:54I did a lot of, a lot of really intense training.
03:56This is more like throwing and...
03:58Yeah, breaking things, running over people, and shooting huge guns.
04:03Oh, it's like Mark when he leaves the show every day.
04:04Yeah, that's it.
04:05It's awesome.
04:05I love it.
04:06Running over people part, anyway.
04:07Yeah.
04:08And what about for you?
04:09I know a lot of it's special effects, but are they, I mean, I see the picture of you
04:12with your little special arm there.
04:15Are you, are you, is it taking a long time to get dressed and fitted with pieces, or is
04:20it...
04:20Like in makeup?
04:21It's, you know, it's really fun to be a Terminator, but you have to get up very early in the morning.
04:26Mm-hmm.
04:26Because some days I, I, I show up at, at four and I fall asleep in the makeup trailer
04:32for an hour.
04:32Well, someone's a title and a medal to you.
04:35Mm-hmm.
04:35Really.
04:36Mm-hmm.
04:36How do you get a dress to go with that robot arm?
04:38I mean, it's got to be just perfect, doesn't it?
04:40Everything goes with, yeah, everything goes with endoskeleton.
04:44So tell us about you.
04:45I'm from Texas and I've been acting for about six years.
04:50I was a dancer before I was an actress, so I love this role because I, I get to, you
04:55know, really get physical and, and, and work out and, and even my fight scenes feel like
05:01choreography.
05:01So it's natural for me.
05:03It's a natural transition.
05:04Are they choreographed?
05:05I mean, do you know ahead of time exactly when you're supposed to throw whatever it is
05:09across the room that's going across the room?
05:10Well, it's an interesting part about doing, doing action in a series instead of doing
05:16it on film because when you do it in film, you get to workshop and you get to try different
05:20rigging and when we show up on set to do the series, it's like, okay, you know, just
05:25see how it goes and take it light the first time and, and, but when I'm working with these
05:30really big guys, we, we choreograph it carefully because I don't want to hurt them.
05:35Exactly.
05:36I understand.
05:37So.
05:38You want to leave Mark unscathed today.
05:39I take it slow.
05:40I already feel some tension here.
05:42I listen to you.
05:42You don't have to worry.
05:44All right.
05:45Summer, great luck on the series and you, you don't even need it anymore because it's
05:48the hottest series of course in the season on any network.
05:51Terminator, the Sarah Connor Chronicles.
05:53It's airing tonight at nine on Fox.
05:56Thanks again, Summer.
05:57Thank you.
05:58Big, big.
05:59It was a long wait because we started way back last February shooting the pilot and
06:04then we took a, you know, we took a break and started shooting the series and it feels
06:07like it's been forever that we've been wanting people to see what we've been working on and
06:12it's been a great response.
06:13I'm really proud.
06:14And as far as, you know, it being the, the, it thing right now, I mean, you watch the
06:19rioters strike.
06:20Do you worry about that at all?
06:21I mean, maybe.
06:22Of course.
06:23I worry, I worry for everyone just because it seems to be affecting the entire city and,
06:28and it's really sad.
06:30I miss, I miss going to work.
06:32I miss seeing everybody and I worry about everyone.
06:35But I, I feel like, I feel like things are going to get resolved and we're all going to
06:39go back soon.
06:40You talked about how, um, you've been acting for six years.
06:44So, I mean, what other, what other projects have you done?
06:47I mean, what are the big ones?
06:48Well, I've done mostly TV.
06:49I've done, I've done some different series.
06:51I was on the show Firefly.
06:53I did a show called 4400.
06:54I, I did a show called The Unit.
06:58Um, I've done some other movies, but nothing, nothing like this.
07:01This has been such an amazing experience.
07:04Was it, um, again, some, a role you really want?
07:08I mean, or you had heard about this or it was just something that you get sent out on
07:11and it's like, well, we'll see if this one sticks.
07:13Well, when I first read the script, I thought I was, I was intimidated to audition at all.
07:18But when I went in and I met with Josh Friedman, who's the creator of the show, and I met with
07:22David Nutter, who directed us in the pilot, in the first episode, I just, I had such a
07:27connection to these men and I really believed in them and trusted them.
07:32And I thought, you know, if I just open myself to this opportunity and I really take their
07:37direction and trust all of the, the members of the team, then, then I, I feel like this
07:42is going to be a great experience.
07:43It is such a big undertaking again, week in and week out.
07:45It's an hour, it's, it's, it's half a feature.
07:48It's huge.
07:48And it's a small cast.
07:50We're a very small cast.
07:50We have great, strong guest stars that we're so relieved to see.
07:56But, but it is, it's a big show for, for four people.
08:00Real quick.
08:01Summer Glau.
08:02Okay.
08:02That's your name, right?
08:03Or did you come up with that one?
08:04It's mine.
08:04I was born with that one.
08:06What is that?
08:06Glau?
08:07It's German.
08:08German.
08:08German.
08:09My dad's side of the family is German.
08:10Well, you've done your family proud that you're back in Texas.
08:13Thank you.
08:13Congratulations.
08:14Thank you so much.
