00:01Look at the beast.
00:03So here's the Turbo 3.
00:06In Italy, we call it the Turbone.
00:09The big turbo.
00:11But in fact, it's electric.
00:14So this is more than 500 horsepower on the rear wheels.
00:18That's a real project.
00:30Renault's reboot, or the Renolution as it calls it, is well underway with a retro twist.
00:57And now it's going to get turbocharged.
01:00This is the Renault 5 Turbo 3e.
01:08Renault's got a bit of history with turbocharging.
01:10It actually patented the first turbo in 1902.
01:13And it's made loads of turbo cars over the year, like this, the Renault 5 GT Turbo.
01:18Guys, school used to have one of these.
01:21It was a cool car, seriously fast.
01:23Jason Miller it was.
01:24I wonder what ever happened to Jason Miller.
01:26What happened to his car?
01:28Anyway, turbocharging in Renault.
01:30Renault took turbocharging racing too.
01:33And come with me because up here is one of the coolest things that I have seen in a very long time.
01:39Renault took turbocharging into Formula 1 in the late 70s.
01:43This car over here is actually a race winning car.
01:46The first turbo to win a Formula 1 race.
01:50Renault new on the side.
01:52I remember him.
01:53But let's go into the 80s.
01:55I love the 80s.
01:56Bit of Kylie.
01:57Bit of Rick Astley.
01:58Nick Kershaw, my hero.
02:00Howard Jones with all that hair.
02:02And the Renault 5 Turbo.
02:07Look at this.
02:08There were two.
02:09There was the Renault 5 Turbo, Renault 5 Turbo 2.
02:11It looks so small, so cute, but so beefy.
02:15Just keep in mind everything about this car.
02:17So when we go and see the Turbo 3e, you'll see a lot of this, including inside.
02:21Let's just see if we can look inside this.
02:26Never mind the colours.
02:28Look at that.
02:29That's going to burn your retinas.
02:30But think about the dash as well, because the inspiration for this car is in the 3e.
02:37Of course, the 5 Turbo.
02:39This is like going through Father Christmas's grottoes.
02:41Great.
02:42Let's open these doors.
02:44Come on through.
02:47Renault 5 Turbo went rallying, didn't it?
02:50Look at these cars.
02:52All genuine cars.
02:53All belong to Renault.
02:54All in top condition.
02:56But there's more.
02:58Come on.
02:59There's another room to go into.
03:00These secret rooms.
03:02Do you remember a few years ago?
03:05This concept, designed for the PlayStation generation.
03:09Fantastic looking thing.
03:11Lovely graphics inside.
03:12There's sort of smart watch features and various other bits and pieces.
03:16But this is the amuse-bouche before the real car that we're going to see now.
03:23The Renault 5 Turbo 3e.
03:29And there it is.
03:31Look at that.
03:32This is something else.
03:34This is a car that you will actually be able to buy.
03:37Very much track focused.
03:39But you can take it on the road as well.
03:41So, this car is a lightweight car.
03:441,450 kilos or less.
03:46That is seriously lightweight.
03:48Now, unlike the Renault 5 that you or I might be able to buy, this car has 800 volt technology under the skin.
03:56That means it charges really quickly.
03:58It's got a 70 kilowatt hour battery, which is bigger than you'll get in a Renault 5.
04:03But it will charge from 15 to 80% in 50 minutes.
04:07The electric motors are in the wheels, which is really fun.
04:11And this car has a 248 mile range.
04:15Now, if you're going to drive it quickly, it's going to be considerably less than that.
04:18In those wheels, those motors produce 540 horsepower and 4800 newton meters of torque.
04:26The car will get from 0 to 62 in 3.5 seconds.
04:30And it does 168 miles an hour on a track.
04:36As with that concept we saw through in the last room, this car also has a drift mode.
04:42There are four other driving modes and four regenerative braking modes as well.
04:46So they put more energy back into the batteries.
04:49Now, you don't want to hear me talking about the design of this car.
04:52I've got just the fellow who can show us around.
04:58There really is nobody better to show me around this car than Gilles Vidal, who is Renault's design director.
05:04Now, I've known you quite a while, Gilles, and you've shown me a lot of cars.
05:07But I can honestly say none of them have quite made me go, wow, as much as this.
05:11So tell me how you took the Renault 5 that is slightly more affordable, that I might be able to push by, and you came to this.
05:20What have you done?
05:21Well, we've done quite a lot actually.
05:23We started to do a show car, the Turbo Street Drifter, we called it.
05:28And it actually went up the hill at Goodwood at some point.
05:32And the idea with this was to create something cool, amazing, that would tell the world EV cars, electrical cars can be fun, can be enjoyable, can be delightful, can be colorful, can be…
05:44And they don't have to be boring, dull pieces of technology.
05:48And so that was the main message.
05:50And of course, that's what we're trying to do with the production of 5, or the production of 4, or the coming Twingo as well.
05:57You know, bring color and a bit of fun to the roads and to life.
06:02But with this one, we said, okay, we said, Lucademeo said, guys, let's build it.
06:07We're like, really? With a big smile on our faces.
06:10Here, we're not only, like with Renault V, to nourish the history of Renault, but also the myth.
06:17And here, we're really a master piece.
06:20It's a monocoque in carbon.
06:23It's less than 3 seconds from 0 to 100.
06:26It's going to be funny.
06:28It's a thing only for the brave, for the courageous.
06:32What you can see here, the differences between this and the production of the car we've done,
06:36is that you can recognize bits of the R5, the cabin mainly.
06:40The windscreen is the same, almost the same as the R5.
06:43The mirror, the rear lights, all the same.
06:46The door handle, which is missing here.
06:49So, a few bits and pieces are carried over, but that's it.
06:53The chassis is specific.
06:55The whole skin is a carbon fiber skin.
06:59Lightweight, then?
07:00Very lightweight.
07:01So, we'll be below one and a half ton for an EV car.
07:05It's really amazing.
07:07Much below, we hope.
07:08We're trying hard to push it further.
07:10Yeah.
07:11So, yeah.
07:12Everything else is specific on this car.
07:13And all the lovely bits, the sort of surfaces here and these little flaps,
07:18they all serve a purpose in terms of what it does for the car?
07:21Yes.
07:22So, on one hand, we started to say, okay, we need something amazing.
07:24And again, the Drifter show car that we've done before had loads of little delightful details.
07:31Very graphical, very video game almost.
07:33And we said, okay, well, let's deliver this on the production car because people will expect that.
07:37We'll enjoy that so much.
07:39But let's try to make them purposeful, meaningful.
07:42So, this here, for instance, is a proper air scoop so that the heat…
07:47As in the old car?
07:48Yeah, exactly.
07:49So, the heat gets away and there's a massive radiator hidden under this.
07:52Yeah.
07:53Those flaps we are using at the moment, we are moving them around to optimize aerodynamics.
07:58Okay.
07:59Because people might, that's mainly a track car, but it will be road legal.
08:03And some people might want to go to the track on the road instead of on a trailer.
08:07So, we are trying to push the, even though it's not the ultimate goal, to push the autonomy as far as we can by optimizing aerodynamics.
08:14By the way, you see the wheels have those discs.
08:17These are the most fantastic wheels.
08:19So, they are trying to be very aerodynamics.
08:21Yeah.
08:22But here you can read, you know, remove before track for the cooling of the brakes on the track.
08:26So, you remove those bits.
08:27It's less aero-efficient.
08:28Yeah.
08:29But at least you can cool the brakes when you are in an attack mode.
08:32Yeah.
08:33And you've got the scoops in the back here as well.
08:34Yes.
08:35Also, because we need to pull the brakes in the back and we have in-wheel motors.
08:39Yeah.
08:40So, maybe for the first time on a production car, unless someone else does it.
08:43And we don't know about it.
08:45There will be in-wheel motors.
08:47So, you need to cool down a lot of things in this area.
08:50Hence those scoops.
08:52But on the other side, one of them is actually hiding, opening and hiding the...
08:56So, it's where you plug in?
08:57Yeah, yeah.
08:58The charging.
08:59Fantastic.
09:00So, there are little tricks like this that are really, really cool.
09:02So, the details are kind of really crafted in terms of looks, design or aesthetics.
09:07Yeah.
09:08But they all serve a purpose.
09:10What is your favorite feature?
09:11You've got to point out one thing to me that you love on this car that you just look at and think,
09:15Oh, that's so good.
09:17What is it?
09:18Yeah.
09:19But I think it's maybe the...
09:20Okay, those details are really cool.
09:21But maybe if we just step back 50 meters, the global stance of the thing is actually a beast.
09:27Yeah.
09:28And it's not an aggressive beast.
09:29Okay, through the proportion, maybe a little bit.
09:31Yeah.
09:32But it's not like an aggressive supercar kind of thing.
09:35It's...
09:36The Renault 5 has always been a cute, a nice car.
09:39So, that's what we're trying to do also with this one.
09:41But if you step back though, the global proportions are just like amazing.
09:45And it's wide.
09:46Like, you call it a mini supercar.
09:47Yeah, exactly.
09:48And it's very wide.
09:49It's actually 30 centimeters wider than the production R5.
09:53Yeah.
09:54Usually we say 30 millimeters, but these times it's centimeters.
09:5630 centimeters.
09:57That's what I call...
09:58That's a school ruler.
09:59Yeah.
10:00Either side?
10:01No, 15 either side.
10:03So, the equivalent...
10:04That's a foot, basically.
10:05That's a foot globally.
10:07It's slightly lower than the production R5.
10:10Yeah.
10:11But yeah, it's...
10:12And I can have one of these, any finish that I like, or are you going to police that for
10:17me?
10:18Yes.
10:19No, exactly.
10:20So, you see one livery today there in yellow.
10:21Yeah.
10:22We'll prepare a few versions that we would love to propose to the customers.
10:25Yeah.
10:26But ultimately, there will be a program where you can do whatever you want.
10:28If you decide you want a pink car, a green car, any hue you want that we can custom
10:34make for you and with you in a working session with the designers.
10:38And even in the interior, if you want the grandmother's curtains on the seats as a trimming
10:43fabric, we can do it for you.
10:45I must look at my grandmother's curtains.
10:46Gilles, thank you.
10:47You have made me smile.
10:48Thank you so much.
10:49I really appreciate it.
10:51So, Renault 5 Turbo 3e.
10:53What a striking car.
10:54I love the fact that you can personalize it any way you want to.
10:58I quite fancy having it in the livery of Nigel Mansell's helmet, another one of my 1980s
11:05heroes.
11:06Now, talking about the 1980s, this car is going to be limited.
11:10Of course it is.
11:11It's going to be a collector's item.
11:12It's being limited to, guess what?
11:151,980 models.
11:181980.
11:19Brilliant.
11:20I know what you want to know also is price.
11:23Now, Renault is being a bit sketchy.
11:25You won't be able to order one for another few months.
11:27It won't actually be delivered until 2027.
11:30But let's give you a guide price.
11:32Ready for this?
11:33Are you sitting down?
11:34I'm told maybe £120,000 to £140,000.
11:40But if you go to town with a personalization, you could spend £200,000 on this car.
11:47Is it going to be that much of a collector's car?
11:50Now, Renault says it is a mini supercar.
11:53Certainly got the performance.
11:54It's as wide as a supercar.
11:56Are you going to pay that sort of money?
11:58£200,000?
11:59So for that, what I reckon you could have is a Renault 5 Turbo.
12:04A Renault 5 Turbo II, the classic ones in reasonable condition.
12:07You could probably have the Alpine A290, which is the hot version of the Renault 5.
12:12Oh, and you can probably have a Renault 5 thrown in there as well.
12:15Or one of these.
12:17What would you have?
12:18Oh, to have the choice.
12:19But for the moment, let's just glory in the fact that Renault has done this.
12:25It's just going to be fun, isn't it?
