00:00It's the Ile de Notre Dame, the circuit Gilles Villeneuve, and this the 40th anniversary of Gilles Villeneuve's Grand Prix debut from McLaren at Silverstone back in 1977.
00:11We were in Monaco a fortnight ago, Montreal 3,800 miles across the Atlantic.
00:16It's the same combination of tyres, the soft, the super soft and the ultra soft.
00:21It's a street circuit just as it is in the Principality, but the speeds here weigh in excess of 200 miles an hour, and you don't get that in Monaco.
00:3014 turns around this Ile de Notre Dame course, 6 to the left and 8 to the right, and 362 metres from pole position down to the apex of Turn 1, where Sebastian is well.
00:42And here's the Grand Prix grid for today.
00:44Lewis Hamilton starts on pole for the sixth time in Montreal, Sebastian Vettel alongside him, and it's an all-finished second row of Valtteri Bottas, and Kimi Räikkönen who starts fourth for the fourth time this year.
00:53Max Verstappen out-qualifies a teammate here for the first time there, but he can avoid all the carnage, Martin,
00:58because I'd rather get the feeling there's going to be a few cars trying to get as much of the job done into that first turn as possible.
01:05I wish the 50th anniversary of the Canadian Grand Prix here in Montreal, and in 2017, it's lights out, and away we go.
01:14Excellent start from Sebastian Vettel, Lewis Hamilton covers him, and outside goes Max Verstappen, locking up on the inside Valtteri Bottas.
01:22What a start from Max Verstappen into second place already.
01:26They all file through Turn 1 in single file, some couple are double abreast, but they all get through pretty much unscathed.
01:32Dust being kicked up from the rear, but Max Verstappen going for fifth on the grid and getting up to second place already.
01:38Looked like there's someone either kicked up some dirt, or went very wide indeed, and straight into the barriers goes Carlos Sainz, and also...
01:45Let's have a little look, see what happened to Felipe Massa.
01:48Oh, an absolutely no chance there for Carlos Sainz, as Felipe Massa came straight through and hit him.
01:54I think it's the other way around, was it not?
01:56I think you'll find it was the Toro Rosso that arrived on the scene backwards.
02:00Let's see it again.
02:02Oh, look at that, so he's lost it very, so contact then, on the straight, between turns two and three.
02:09Yeah.
02:10So he arrived gearbox first.
02:12But what caused Carlos Sainz, then, saw the bits fly off, but originally, it was Max Verstappen who touched Sebastian Vettel at the start, when he went round the outside,
02:24and that caused the original weakening of some of the elements of that front wing, thanks to our boys in the VT gallery for the information on that one.
02:32And Sebastian Vettel then pits way, way earlier than he would have wanted, way longer than he would have wanted as well.
02:39I would imagine it's the super soft tyres it is going on, and they will hope they can get him to the end of the race.
02:44And Vettel's front wing with him.
02:47Yeah, exactly.
02:48I mean, these tyres are quite fragile, so we've been keeping an eye on all the pressures and everything, but all looks okay.
02:53So, yeah, I mean, a great move from him.
02:55Yeah, that sort of move, Christian, is that something...
02:57...world championship point.
02:59Oh, Sebastian Vettel's got about three and a half seconds to make up.
03:02Oh, dear, Max Verstappen, no!
03:05Oh, after such a good start.
03:09Verstappen pulls over to the track and the side of the track, this is absolute heartbreak for him and for your excellence.
03:18And today is one of those days you can see he is absolute...
03:23And that time, a minute of time on that dashboard, they have to stay above.
03:26And that neutralises the race to the seaway and, say, every so often you can pull them through a...
03:35...that needs pushing away.
03:38Dangerous race could be red flag while they sort that out.
03:42They could handle that under a safe... a full safety car, because they know where the pack is on the racetrack then.
03:47But it's the drivers meandering through the grid.
03:50Oh, here goes Lance Stroll now, having a go into the McLaren of Stoffel-Van-Dorn...
03:54...and locks up a brake going into the hairpin.
03:56...but Stroll pulls off the overtake, puts himself up into the points.
04:01Yes, yes, yes.
04:02And here's Williams.
04:03P10.
04:04Alarm Stroll.
04:05Battle for the last podium place is going to be really good towards the end of the race.
04:09Between Ricciardo and third, and Perez in fourth.
04:12Ricciardo has been trying to get away from the Force India as the...
04:15as the sole remaining Toro Rosso of Cliat serves his drive-through penalty right in front of me.
04:22But, yeah, Perez is keeping the Red Bull really honest.
04:27He certainly is at the moment. Don't count out Kimi Räikkönen in that scrap as well.
04:31As down's Kevin Magnussen in his sights.
04:33Magnussen goes to cover him.
04:34There comes Hülkenberg, pulls to the other side.
04:36Magnussen has to cover up Hülkenberg then.
04:38And then somehow, they all go through into Turn 1 in the same order.
04:43Magnussen, Stroll, and then Hülkenberg.
04:46Absolutely.
04:47I think the answer is, if you're at the Force India pit wall, or you're at the Mercedes pit wall,
04:51for Hamilton-Ockman you say, oh, stay out, lads.
04:54No need to pit.
04:55Bottas thinks about it into Turn 1.
04:58Runs out of racetrack, and I'll come there.
05:01That's the first time we've seen the loss of grip, the loss of traction, coming out of Turn 1.
05:07Just got a little bit skittish.
05:09And Bottas almost run into the 40k pounds.
05:12But then the Force India advantage, well, had an advantage of about 26 seconds
05:17over Esteban Ockman at the end of lap 31.
05:20So assuming nothing goes wrong in the pit stop, he should comfortably get back out in the lead again.
05:25The boys get to work.
05:27It is going to be the super soft tyre that goes on Hamilton's Mercedes.
05:322.5 second stop, slightly slower than his teammates, but he's got easily enough time out front.
05:42So Ockman comes into the pits as well.
05:45The first sign of a loss of grip, forcing you to say, right, we're going to have you change.
05:49Thank you very much, and he gets the super soft tyre too.
