00:00India saw one of its worst aviation disasters when on the 12th of June Air India Flight 171 crashed in Ahmedabad killing 242 passengers and crew. How did this disaster unfold? I'll tell you how. The aircraft in question was a 787 Dreamliner made by Boeing.
00:19Now this aircraft is one that entered service in the 2010s. It has two engines, two Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 engines, which take this aircraft to a range of 12,000 kilograms.
00:49The aircraft has a length of 57 meters and interestingly it has a wingspan of 60 meters, which means its wings are longer than the fuselage. It's one of those rare such aircraft.
01:05Over 300 such 787s are in service all over the world. Air India operates 34 of them and so far no Dreamliner has crashed. But that unfortunately happened today.
01:20And what do we know so far? Well, the aircraft was here at Ahmedabad's Sardar Patel Airport.
01:36It was supposed to take off and reach London Gatwick over 3000 kilometers away.
01:53There were 230 passengers on board at 1.39 PM. The aircraft took off. The runway has a length of 3.5 kilometers. It's a single runway. The aircraft took off.
02:12And when it reached a height of 190 meters, that's when the pilot gave a mayday signal, a mayday or a distress call. And then suddenly the plane began to lose altitude.
02:27And it sank. And here a place called Meghani Nagar. It crashed into a hostel. There was a massive fireball.
02:40We of course don't know the reasons what exactly happened. But the tragedy is that it just took off and sank like a stone within a few minutes of its takeoff, killing all passengers and crew on board.
02:54So this is it. The story of Air India 171, the tragedy of Air India 171.
