00:00In the fourth test match against the West Indies at Sbaina Park, Kingston in April 1989,
00:06India's legendary all-rounder Kapil Dev delivered a remarkable bowling performance that stood
00:11out as a lone beacon in an otherwise one-sided contest.
00:15Balling with unrelenting rhythm and precision, Kapil Dev picked up 6 for 84 in 33 overs,
00:22including seven medians.
00:23During the West Indies' first innings, it was a masterclass in seam and swing bowling.
00:28Unfortunately, his brilliance at one end lacked any meaningful score from the other, allowing
00:33the host to build a commanding position.
00:36In the second innings, Kapil Dev continued to toil hard, returning figure of 1 for 22 from
00:41nine overs, including two medians.
00:44He finished the match with overall figure of 7 for 116, a performance that under different
00:50circumstances might have turned the tide in India's favour.
00:53Let's revisit this iconic spell from Kapil Dev, a true display of skill, determination and
00:59fighting spirit even in defeat.
01:01And so much depending on turning on this man Kapil Dev to make an early breakthrough for India.
01:06He's got 340 test wickets, by some distance the leading Indian wicket-taker, the whole ball of
01:11Gordon Greenwich.
01:12He's got a striker over the host Kapil Dev to give India any chance.
01:25A loud shout, a loud appeal to Kapil Dev.
01:26Greenwich is furious.
01:27It's high, he said.
01:28Quite a vendetta going on between the West Indians and Kieran Morey, the Indian keeper.
01:37I think he appeals for anything and everything.
01:40Well, it wasn't the worst shout.
01:42He came back off the scene.
01:44Kapil again.
01:45Nicked.
01:46Caught.
01:47Aaron Lall, second slip.
01:48And Greenwich will be with what is in session he owes for more.
01:52Well, Aaron Lall who's taken his fair share of stick when he's been batting must be delighted
02:00to get his own back with a very fine catch away to his right.
02:04That was leaving him all the time and Kapil has done exactly what India wanted.
02:08He's got the first wicket and to get Greenwich out who's been a scourge of Desmond Haynes.
02:15Oh, he's caught.
02:18Well, what a golly catch to me.
02:21Ravi Shastri in the gully.
02:23Shortboard from Kapil was not disguised at all.
02:28And Haynes got himself into an extraordinary position.
02:32Haynes has gone for 15.
02:35Well, he should have left this really.
02:38He realised he was in no sort of position so he just didn't finish the shot.
02:41Had he dropped his bat, he'd have been perfectly alright.
02:44As it is, it logged in a very gentle arc to Shastri at deep gully.
02:48And that is a very important...
02:50110 he is now at Knicks.
02:52Knicks the pad, Knicks the bat.
02:54They all go up.
02:55Veng Soccer at slip.
02:56Kieran Morey.
02:57And the umpire, David Archer, sees that Viv Richards thinks he's gone out
03:02and goes across the square leg.
03:04Now you go across the square leg, Peter, I think,
03:06just to see if the ball actually carried to the keeper.
03:09Absolutely.
03:10They're just confirming that or denying it.
03:13What's going to happen?
03:14He's out.
03:15He's out.
03:16Let's take a look again.
03:18Wich is playing the shot.
03:19The square cut.
03:20The ball coming through.
03:21The pad goes up.
03:22We've Knicks the pad.
03:24It looked very much as if he got no back to it at all.
03:28You can't really tell from here.
03:30He's out.
03:31No, he's too interested.
03:33Kappel, I think.
03:35He's starting to raise his hands because he thought he was pretty closely off stump.
03:39But...
03:40Kappel Dev.
03:41Hits Slogey on the boot.
03:43And he's out.
03:44LBW.
03:45The ball speeds away.
03:47In the meantime, David Archer, the umpire, gives Gus Logey out.
03:52LBW to Kappel Dev.
03:54Good ball.
03:55Just beating for pace.
03:56Gus a little late on the shot.
03:57And hitting him in line with about middle and leg.
04:00And that's out.
04:01Fifth wicket down.
04:02Nothing.
04:03It's a wonderful sight, that.
04:04Oops, and Richardson goes.
04:05That's a great sight, too, for India.
04:06Kappel Dev gets him to chop the ball, I think, off the bottom edge of the bat.
04:09And this really is a fine piece of fast medium bowling by Kappel who hasn't given up.
04:14And really has got rid of a man who could have got at least 250 off his own bat.
04:20Now, that's a valuable wicket, indeed.
04:2355 the lead now.
04:24In comes Malcolm Marshall.
04:41He also can play, we've seen him play some very nice attacking moves here.
04:51play some very nice attacking innings in this series, but Capo's in good form.
05:01Oh, he certainly is. He certainly is.
05:04I think that nip back off the scene came through the gate, as we say,
05:08between bat and pad, and out goes Marshalls off stump.
05:13Out for nought.
05:16So what a change about is coming in this match.
05:19Second ball, Malcolm Marshalls out, following Ritchie Richardson's 156.
05:23Anneli Richards, the first century for him in this series, 110.
05:28And the extra's 38.
05:35384. A very good performance by Kapil Dev, six fickets.
05:42Kapil Dev to see if there's a miracle available here for India.
05:45West Indies requiring 58 to win.
05:50And that looks like four of them.
05:52Gordon Greenwich off the mark, and make sure that he doesn't get a pair in this match.
05:58Nick, no luck for Kapil, plenty for Gordon Greenwich.
06:02Four runs over slip.
06:06Yeah, Greenwich doesn't often misjudge that shot because it's one of his better ones,
06:11but the bounce of the ball beat him there. That's why he got an edge rather than a middle of the bat.
06:19But the runs are flowing. This is Greenwich.
06:21A little nick, and I think it's bat or glove, and he's out. He certainly is out.
06:30And Gordon Greenwich goes. Fine voting by Kapil Dev.
06:34Yeah, just on tea time as well. With the clouds banking up behind.
06:45Greenwich getting a really good one from Kapil that lifted.
06:48He couldn't do anything about that. Just brushing the glove and that's the end of the game.
06:51However, despite Kapil Dev's heroic, India succumbed to a seven-week defeat. It was in
06:57every sense a one-man show with the ball for India.
06:59Had there been greater support from the rest of the bowling attack, the outcome might well have
07:05been different. Overall, Kapil Dev finished the series as India's leading wicket-taker with 18
07:11wickets at an average of 21.38 at an economy rate of 2.62. His performance was by far the best
07:19among his teammates. Truly a lone spearhead in a struggling bowling unit against a formidable
07:25opposition. Kapil Dev's bowling during the 1988-89 test tour of the West Indies showcased his
07:31enduring class and resilience, even as India was outplayed across the series. Kapil Dev is widely
07:38regarded as one of the greatest all-rounders in the history of cricket and a true pioneer of Indian
07:45fast-balling. A natural athlete and a fiercest competitor. He also appeared in 225 ODIs for India
07:53between 1978 and 1994. He captained India to their historic first World Cup victory in 1983,
08:00a moment that transformed Indian cricket forever. Known for his outswingers, powerful hitting and
08:06unwavering commitment, Kapil Dev's legacy is etched in cricket history as a game-changer who led by
08:13example and inspired generations. Kapil Dev enjoyed a storied test career spanning from 1978 to 1994,
08:21playing in 131 tests. He ended with 434 wickets at an average of 29.64 with a strike rate of 63.9 and
08:32a best-innings haul of 9 for 83. Over his career, he claimed 23 five-wicket hauls and secured 10 wickets
08:39in a match on two occasions. Additionally, Kapil Dev was a genuine all-rounder, scoring 5,248 runs at an
08:48average of 31.05, including 8 test centuries with a high score of 163 net outs. He remained the only
08:56Indian player to have taken over 400 test wickets and scored more than 5,000 test runs, a testament to
09:03his multifaceted contribution to the Indian theme.
