00:00Growing up,
00:02I loved the space program,
00:06but
00:08nobody doing that stuff
00:10looked like me.
00:12Very few people today
00:14even have a clue about
00:16black people's contribution to human space flight.
00:18I was the only black
00:20in aerospace and the only black
00:22in NASA.
00:24Because they weren't
00:26written in history books.
00:30In the early days of the civil rights movement
00:34NASA
00:36wanted to show that they were engaged
00:38in equality for all. I was told
00:40by friends and enemies alike
00:42you're 20 years too soon buddy.
00:44If you qualify and would like to be an
00:46astronaut, now is the time.
00:48This is your NASA.
00:50I don't think America or anybody
00:52knew. I was a body in a way.
00:54It was imaginary.
00:56It was a lie. Around the same time
00:58there was a Cuban who was the first
01:00person of color to fly.
01:02The Soviets made that
01:04history.
01:06Not the United States.
01:08To see a black man in
01:10space.
01:12It would have changed
01:14things.
01:16The three of us all recognized that one of us
01:24would be the first black astronaut.
01:28I would have made it to the moon.
01:30One more step for a man.
01:32They were not going to let that happen.
01:34Representation becomes critically important
01:36to help us keep moving down that path.
01:38Back in the day they were saying that blacks are too ignorant
01:42to be flying in space.
01:44I'm smitten to tear up there
01:46doing all these wonderful things.
01:48Black history is American history.
01:54We forget it at our peril.
01:56We will be on a pic
