00:00:00And Argentina, the 1978 World Cup winners with the great Diego Maradona against a very, very fast-moving South Korean team who will have to rely upon their speed and very, very fast counter-attacking breakaways to surprise this Argentinian side.
00:00:19One of the favorites for this competition and number 10, the great Diego Armando Maradona, who is the Argentinian captain. We expect great things from Maradona. These conditions in Mexico City, this beautifully prepared pitch should suit him.
00:00:33But the South Koreans certainly will be no pushover. They are well-prepared, very fast indeed, undoubtedly underdogs against a side like Argentina.
00:00:44But they may surprise, because they are very fast and very good on the counter-attack. We would expect to see the typical Latin style of Argentina stroking the ball from man to man, building up slowly, and then using the great talents of Maradona to act as one of the major goal-makers and goal-scorers.
00:01:05Argentina, moving the ball about in the altitude of Mexico City, about 7,300 feet. I've been running in this area during the first week we were here, and it is very hard work to run.
00:01:21When you have to move and tackle and sprint and recover and control the ball as Diego Maradona is doing now, it is very difficult indeed.
00:01:31But there we see the sort of experiences Maradona had in Spain in 1982, which eventually led to his frustration and his sending off in that World Cup to make his debut of a very disappointing one.
00:01:43There we saw the methods that some teams will use to stop this superstar by going in hard and tackling hard and bringing him to the ground, and so it is a free kick for Argentina.
00:01:52The Korean wall, and now we will see whether the Argentinians can work their magic with this first set play of the game.
00:02:06Shipping it through, out wide on the right, but the Korean defense able to clear to safety this first threat posed by the Argentinians.
00:02:14It's very interesting there that Diego Maradona have passed that ball off.
00:02:17Everyone expects him to shoot. He has a hard shot, bending shot, much like the Brazilians,
00:02:21but I think they figured Korea might have been expecting it, and he changed it to a different set play.
00:02:26But the Koreans were ready for it.
00:02:28Number eight, Nestor, to take the throw.
00:02:32Long throw, well into the penalty area.
00:02:35Argentina going in, but the Korean defense, well up to it.
00:02:39Number 14, Ricardo, but a breakaway now by these very, very fleet-footed Koreans.
00:02:43This is their threat.
00:02:45Chipping it into the center. Oh, and pulled down.
00:02:47Surely, surely there, a kick.
00:02:49Yes, without question.
00:02:52Almost like rugby football as he was going through.
00:02:55Very, very well tackled if it had been the 15-a-side game.
00:02:59Very fast break and a good through ball.
00:03:02And the Korean definitely had him beat.
00:03:04The Argentinian had to pull him back.
00:03:06I'll tell you what, that almost looked like a yellow card.
00:03:08Very close to it indeed.
00:03:10I think the referee, quite lenient.
00:03:13And Maradona trying to get some clarification there.
00:03:15But it is the first set play of the game for the South Koreans.
00:03:18And we saw a beautiful example there of their tremendous pace in counterattack.
00:03:22Now, whether they can keep this up at this altitude remains to be seen.
00:03:25But they're well-prepared athletes and very fast.
00:03:29And so the first set play just outside the box.
00:03:31This is a dangerous area.
00:03:32The Argentinian wall has been formed.
00:03:39Seems to be some uncertainty in the Korean organization for this set play.
00:03:45And they try to bend the ball around the wall.
00:03:48And they don't succeed.
00:03:49But they still have possession.
00:03:52Number two, Park.
00:03:54Try to make progress down the wing.
00:03:56And the physical superiority of the Argentinian defender there.
00:04:01Pushing the ball out.
00:04:03As in yesterday's game with Canada and France,
00:04:05I think that Argentina has to be very careful.
00:04:07They don't take the Koreans too lightly.
00:04:09As we've seen already, with the one quick break they've had,
00:04:11they're a very well-prepared team.
00:04:15Here's Oscar moving it up to Sergio.
00:04:20Argentina, long ball.
00:04:24Maradona in possession again, showing his tremendous skill.
00:04:27And once again, hacked down.
00:04:32The Argentinians are feeling that this should be a yellow card.
00:04:35The referee telling the Korean defenders that they have to tackle fairly
00:04:40and go for the ball and not the man.
00:04:42And Argentina, of course, concerned about Maradona's knee.
00:04:46There are many who feel that he should have had an operation on this knee,
00:04:49which is somewhat suspect.
00:04:51He has decided, wisely or not, we shall see perhaps in a moment,
00:04:56to delay the operation because of his desire to play in this World Cup competition.
00:05:00And therefore, the defenders certainly going in hard because they realize the great threat that Maradona poses.
00:05:08Here we see him coming through and no attempt whatsoever to play that ball.
00:05:11That deserved a yellow card without question.
00:05:13We remind you that we are bringing you this game from the Olympic Stadium in Mexico City,
00:05:19Argentina versus South Korea,
00:05:21because there have been electrical problems in Iroquato
00:05:24and no pictures coming from that venue where the Soviet Union are playing Hungary.
00:05:30So we will do our best to bring you this backup game as we see the ministering to Maradona
00:05:38and we see the reason for him having to have that treatment.
00:05:42No attempt whatsoever by the Korean defender to play that ball.
00:05:46The referee being very lenient at this point,
00:05:48this cannot surely go on if these superstars are to remain healthy throughout these competitions.
00:05:52They're so important to their teams,
00:05:54but of course they are marked men by the defenders.
00:05:57And the South Koreans not noted for their viciousness
00:06:00and their professional fouling, certainly,
00:06:02and one cannot condone this sort of behavior.
00:06:06Trying to bend it around the wall, not succeeding,
00:06:08but Argentina in possession, a big chance now for a shot,
00:06:11and it's there.
00:06:16Certainly capitalizing number 11 for Argentina, Jorge.
00:06:20Alberto Valdano Jorge puts Argentina ahead.
00:06:24As a result of play which followed the set play following Maradona's foul.
00:06:30Here we see it again.
00:06:32The Koreans had all overplayed the free kick by Maradona
00:06:34and were cut when he headed the ball back in.
00:06:37It was a tremendous shot through a lot of traffic.
00:06:38No chance for the goalie.
00:06:39But this is something that the Koreans did not want to happen so early in the game,
00:06:43not with the skillful Argentinians now being able to stroke the ball about
00:06:46with the pressure being offered after scoring the first goal.
00:06:49So Jorge Valdano puts them ahead.
00:06:51And now with this early goal, we are likely to see Argentinian confidence
00:06:57burgeoning and then beginning to play this ball about the park
00:07:03with a great deal of confidence and making these South Koreans do an awful lot of running.
00:07:07Maradona in possession, recovered from that foul.
00:07:15And a long probing ball, some beautiful running to space,
00:07:18but the goalkeeper out in anticipation ahead of Buruk Gacha who were chasing that ball.
00:07:25Now the South Koreans bringing it out.
00:07:27A long ball by South Korea for their pace,
00:07:29but well cleared by the Argentinian defense,
00:07:32and Gristi puts it safely back to the goalkeeper.
00:07:39Argentina bringing the ball out.
00:07:43Very confident, swinging it about, showing their great technical skills.
00:07:47Klausen.
00:07:53Support, building quietly.
00:07:55Batista.
00:07:57Batista to Buruk Gacha.
00:08:00And switching this ball about with Maradona linking all the time,
00:08:05looking around, lots of time to play this.
00:08:07South Korea not challenging.
00:08:08And now, nice move down the left flank.
00:08:11Can he move across and beat his marker?
00:08:14No, puts it back for support.
00:08:19Playing very heavily on Maradona's generalship.
00:08:24But the Koreans massing in defense,
00:08:26but still not able to clear that ball safely.
00:08:28Another threat from Argentina.
00:08:29Here comes the cross.
00:08:31Two Koreans there to one Argentinian.
00:08:33And heading it away safely, Kim of Korea.
00:08:38I think we're seeing a different Diego Maradona than we saw in Spain in 82.
00:08:41He's matured a lot more.
00:08:43He's more of a leader.
00:08:44And he's able to handle that hard tackling a lot better.
00:08:50There's Yu of Korea, moving it up.
00:08:56Choi.
00:08:57Argentina now in possession.
00:09:01Batista.
00:09:04Argentina very, very slow, leisurely build-up in midfield.
00:09:09Garay moving it across there.
00:09:16Argentinian, a give-and-go.
00:09:18And he gets a chance for another shot,
00:09:20but that will come off a Korean defender for a corner.
00:09:22And we have a message from Ira Poitou.
00:09:33In that game, Soviet Union versus Hungary.
00:09:35The score in the very early stages of that game,
00:09:38Soviet Union 2, Hungary 0.
00:09:41So the Soviets coming on very, very strongly in the opening minutes of that game
00:09:46and showing that they are a team to be reckoned with in this competition.
00:09:49There goes the punching out by the Korean goalkeeper, Cho.
00:09:53But Argentina seizing upon the ball and beginning to roll it about with ease and confidence
00:10:01and switching play to try to stretch this Korean defense.
00:10:05Another threat.
00:10:06Down the wing.
00:10:06The cross immediately over, but the Korean defense able to handle that ball and kick it clear.
00:10:12Wispy looking for support, finding Don and putting it back to the supporting midfield.
00:10:24Batista swinging it about.
00:10:26Maradona, ever the general, seeing a man free on the left side.
00:10:30Here comes the cross.
00:10:33Argentina beginning to exert their overwhelming power in this game,
00:10:38in this early stage, buoyed by that early goal by Valdana.
00:10:44Jeff, I think they're giving Diego Maradona much too much room.
00:10:47He's being able to pick out people.
00:10:49And when you give a player with that much talent, this much time, he'll tear you apart.
00:10:55Maradona always on hand.
00:10:57Much more mature player four years later than he was in Spain
00:11:02when eventually his frustration overcame him
00:11:05and he had the ignominious experience of being ordered off the field.
00:11:11Now four more years of experience under his belt
00:11:14and certainly the linchpin of this Argentinian team.
00:11:17But a breakaway by Correa.
00:11:19A chance for them to use their pace down this left flank.
00:11:21Pushing back for support and receiving it.
00:11:28Beating his man, well played.
00:11:31A good tackle there by Claussen.
00:11:36Going for the ball.
00:11:38Not as we saw in the earlier foul on Maradona going for the man.
00:11:41But a chance for Correa.
00:11:49Argentinian defenders massing in the goal now.
00:11:52Almiron, the goalkeeper, organising his defence.
00:11:58Here he comes.
00:12:01Out chance for Correa.
00:12:03Spraying it out to the right side to spread this Argentinian defence.
00:12:07Oh, and a beautiful shot from outside the area
00:12:15and that was not too far wide.
00:12:18And the Lovat TV series returns in a moment.
00:12:21Back in the Olympic Stadium in Mexico City
00:12:28with 11 minutes gone in this game.
00:12:30Argentina ahead of South Korea.
00:12:32One goal to nil.
00:12:35With a goal by Jorge Valdano.
00:12:38Following a set play which resulted from
00:12:40a vicious foul on Maradona.
00:12:42And here again.
00:12:43The target of the enthusiastic
00:12:48and not always concentrated South Korean defence.
00:12:54Concentrated in the sense that
00:12:55instead of going for the ball
00:12:56they occasionally go for the leg.
00:13:00Loads of time to put this crop in.
00:13:03Argentinians in the area
00:13:04but straight at the goalkeeper.
00:13:07This may be a very difficult
00:13:08and long day for the Korean goalkeeper Cho.
00:13:12So moving it.
00:13:35Caldano the goal scorer
00:13:36but losing possession.
00:13:39And the challenge there.
00:13:42against
00:13:43Youngse and therefore a kick to
00:13:46South Korea.
00:14:00Long probing ball
00:14:02but the Argentinian defence
00:14:03well able to handle that threat.
00:14:06Now Korea a chance to build up again.
00:14:08playing the same sort of tactics as Argentina
00:14:18in the sense of trying to spread out
00:14:20this defence with some cross field balls
00:14:21but it's these forward balls
00:14:23that will bring the result.
00:14:24That one a little too strong
00:14:26and into touch.
00:14:27So it's the throw to Argentina.
00:14:43and there's a lot of times to do it.
00:14:44And there's a lot of times to do it.
00:14:45It's the throw to Argentina.
00:14:45And there's a lot of times to do it.
00:14:46At Easton
00:14:54Murachaga moving it
00:15:04Argentina very slow
00:15:06very patient in their build up
00:15:07and good anticipation
00:15:12by the Korean defense
00:15:13heading it well clear
00:15:14but only to an Argentinian defender
00:15:16Gare
00:15:19pushing it through
00:15:21long ball
00:15:25Maradona having moved into space
00:15:28but closely attended
00:15:29but again a nice through pass
00:15:30but very good anticipation
00:15:32and marking by the South Korean defense
00:15:44no pressure whatsoever
00:15:54for this Argentinian side
00:15:55one goal up
00:15:56the Koreans
00:15:56very reluctant to press them at all
00:15:58until they get into the defensive third
00:16:00Argentina quite content
00:16:01to build up slowly
00:16:02and then release a man
00:16:04with a quick through pass
00:16:05like that
00:16:05no foul that time
00:16:08Maradona ran into the Argentinian defender
00:16:10into the Korean defender
00:16:13sorry
00:16:14the Korea start their build up
00:16:18only two players forward at the moment for South Korea
00:16:25with three Argentinian defenders marking them
00:16:28so the odds are not in favor
00:16:30and again
00:16:32another surely a yellow card this time
00:16:35a clear cut rugby tackle
00:16:37that's the second occasion
00:16:39the referee seems to be very content
00:16:42to pass this by
00:16:44with no more than a cautionary word
00:16:47he cannot surely continue
00:16:48this seems to me
00:16:49not to be the way
00:16:50to treat the great players in the game
00:16:53if they're going to be constantly brought down
00:16:55I don't think that Korea can afford
00:16:57to keep giving away these free kicks
00:16:59too there
00:16:59Argentina scored off the last one
00:17:01and they scored off the next one
00:17:23and now as you see
00:17:27we have a change of picture
00:17:29because at last
00:17:30the technical difficulties
00:17:31have been overcome
00:17:31and we are now in Irapuato
00:17:34where the Soviet Union
00:17:35is leading Hungary 2-0
00:17:37we leave Mexico's Olympic Stadium
00:17:39where Argentina
00:17:40leave South Korea 2-0
00:17:42as a result of that last set play
00:17:44for a foul on Maradona
00:17:45so now we're at Irapuato
00:17:46and delighted to hand over
00:17:48or are we handing over
00:17:50to Stephen Graham
00:17:51that doesn't seem to be clear
00:17:52but certainly the game
00:17:53we are now watching
00:17:54is Irapuato Soviet Union 2
00:17:56Hungary 0
00:17:56and Soviets now
00:17:57threatening once again
00:17:59now the miracles of modern technology
00:18:08take us once again
00:18:09from Irapuato briefly
00:18:10to the Olympic Stadium
00:18:12in Mexico City
00:18:13that was a master control
00:18:19punching up onto the CBC video
00:18:21so we are back in Olympic Stadium
00:18:23and we see the third foul
00:18:25on Diego Maradona
00:18:26surely the referee
00:18:27cannot continue to tolerate this
00:18:29and the Argentinians
00:18:29are trying to describe
00:18:31and discuss this with him
00:18:32Maradona again
00:18:33taking this all very very well
00:18:35he has matured a lot
00:18:36since the last
00:18:37since four years in Spain
00:18:39but the referee
00:18:40will have to start
00:18:41doing something about this
00:18:42he must give out a yellow card
00:18:43they can't just keep
00:18:44chopping Maradona down
00:18:45but they have rightly
00:18:49paid the penalty
00:18:50in other ways
00:18:51in the sense that
00:18:52they are two goals down
00:18:53as a result of two fouls
00:18:55which resulted in two set plays
00:18:57the second of which
00:18:58resulted in a goal
00:19:01directly from the set play
00:19:02and the first one
00:19:04which resulted in
00:19:05some loose play
00:19:06immediately after that set play
00:19:07to put Argentina
00:19:08two goals ahead
00:19:09South Koreans
00:19:11in the Argentinian half
00:19:15and nice ball
00:19:17down the left flank
00:19:20hasn't got any support
00:19:23but has to try to get that
00:19:24prop in with the Argentinians
00:19:25overwhelming him numerically
00:19:27but it does result
00:19:29in the corner
00:19:30therefore South Korea
00:19:33have a chance from this set play
00:19:34to try to come closer
00:19:36to the Argentinian threat
00:19:38Kim of South Korea
00:19:47six feet four
00:19:48there he is
00:19:48he gets up to that ball
00:19:49it's unusual perhaps
00:19:50we don't anticipate
00:19:51Koreans to be tall people
00:19:53but six feet four
00:19:54is useful
00:19:55for a high ball
00:19:56in the area
00:19:57didn't work that time
00:19:58Maradona trapping it
00:19:59on his chest
00:19:59and breaking away
00:20:00avoiding the tackles
00:20:02this time
00:20:03but again
00:20:05South Korea tackling well
00:20:07and getting the ball
00:20:08that side
00:20:09Bok Tang Sung
00:20:14moving it out
00:20:17it's got to be a shot
00:20:19and it's a good shot
00:20:20but from long range
00:20:22and the Argentinian goalkeeper
00:20:24Almiron
00:20:25well able to handle that
00:20:27as we see Clausen
00:20:27who seems to be
00:20:28in a bit of trouble there
00:20:29I think that ball
00:20:29struck him on route
00:20:30probably knocked a little bit
00:20:34of wind out of his sails
00:20:35and so Argentina
00:20:37content to
00:20:38literally walk this ball out
00:20:41finding their men
00:20:43as Batista's in possession
00:20:44South Korea offering
00:20:46absolutely no challenge
00:20:47no challenge at all
00:20:49as Argentina walk this ball out
00:20:50and they'll be delighted
00:20:51to do that all day
00:20:52gives them time
00:20:53to show their great
00:20:54technique and skill
00:20:55playing the ball
00:20:56one to another
00:20:57in a 10 or 15 meter area
00:20:59playing right into their hands
00:21:00and then the occasional
00:21:01probing ball
00:21:02but this time
00:21:03show able to handle that
00:21:05Maradon is definitely
00:21:06the center of this
00:21:07Argentinian team
00:21:08he's been in almost
00:21:09all the moves
00:21:09and he's playing very well
00:21:11already assisted
00:21:12on two goals
00:21:13having a very fine day
00:21:15Jo Kwang-Rae coming on
00:21:42as substitute now
00:21:43for South Korea
00:21:46and 12 coming off
00:21:48Pyong Suk Kim
00:21:50who was intended
00:21:51to mark Maradona
00:21:52and obviously this has failed
00:21:54Korea there
00:21:55almost with a chance
00:21:56but muffing it
00:21:57and he's going
00:21:58safely wide
00:22:00for a goal kick
00:22:02so now Alberto
00:22:18Pompidou
00:22:19the Argentinian goalkeeper
00:22:21sending the ball
00:22:25well upfield
00:22:26deep into the Korean half
00:22:28Maradona again
00:22:34slipping it forward
00:22:35running for the return
00:22:37but being intercepted
00:22:39now Maradona a chance
00:22:44to take his man on
00:22:45Korean defense
00:22:46coming back
00:22:47very quickly
00:22:48to stifle the threat
00:22:49Poo Young-Mu
00:22:53of South Korea
00:22:54able to stifle that threat
00:22:55but
00:22:56the result
00:22:58is a corner
00:22:59which Maradona himself
00:23:01will take
00:23:01Argentina two goals ahead
00:23:05after 25 minutes
00:23:07as Maradona takes
00:23:07this corner
00:23:08doesn't find
00:23:09its target
00:23:10Bautam moves it inside
00:23:16and Argentina
00:23:18pushing it back
00:23:19to Mark
00:23:22and found their offense again
00:23:25Argentina's very comfortable
00:23:31in this game
00:23:32and they're just strolling
00:23:32I think their biggest fear
00:23:33they've got to be careful of
00:23:34is not to become too complacent
00:23:36and allow the Koreans
00:23:37back in the game
00:23:37because right now
00:23:38it's definitely a one-sided game
00:23:40Giusti Maradona
00:23:46out on the right
00:23:47and there he is
00:23:47to receive that ball
00:23:49beats his man
00:23:50very very easily
00:23:51and another
00:23:52but
00:23:53a little bit of
00:23:54acting there
00:23:56I think on that one
00:23:57while undoubtedly
00:23:57he was foul
00:23:58it was not as vicious
00:24:00as the earlier tackling
00:24:01shakes his head
00:24:03in disbelief
00:24:03wonders
00:24:04what he has to do
00:24:06to be allowed
00:24:06to play this game
00:24:07well Jeff
00:24:09I still think
00:24:10he's getting more room
00:24:11in this game
00:24:11than he'll get in
00:24:12most of his other
00:24:13qualifying games
00:24:13and so far
00:24:14the Koreans have paid
00:24:15very dearly
00:24:16for the free kicks
00:24:17this another one
00:24:22and the South Korean

00:25:15very little help

00:25:21here's Changson Park

00:25:36and turn
00:25:36successful
00:25:37getting the cross in
00:25:38but not enough
00:25:40strength in numbers
00:25:42two South Koreans
00:25:48against one Argentinian
00:25:49defender there
00:25:50and the defender

00:26:16and we learn
00:26:18from Iroquato

00:26:26so Soviet Union
00:26:28certainly impressing

00:26:37a rare lesson
00:26:38three nil ahead
00:26:39in the first half
00:26:41but here
00:26:43back at Olympic Stadium
00:26:44Mexico City
00:26:45Argentina
00:26:45two nil ahead
00:26:46both goals

00:26:48and
00:26:49having a relatively
00:26:51easy time of it
00:26:52with this South Korean
00:26:5311
00:26:54it almost seems
00:26:57just that South Korea
00:26:58is content
00:26:59to try and play
00:27:00like the Argentinians
00:27:01and instead of
00:27:02we're hoping to see
00:27:03and we've been told
00:27:04that they're
00:27:04very quick
00:27:05and fast breaking
00:27:06but they haven't
00:27:07showed us that yet
00:27:08and
00:27:12Patouli
00:27:13tackled
00:27:17from behind
00:27:18certain tendency
00:27:20on the part of the South
00:27:24American players
00:27:26to dramatize
00:27:27tackles
00:27:27and therefore
00:27:28the referee has got to be
00:27:29very careful in his judgment
00:27:30but certainly
00:27:31the earlier ones
00:27:32that we have seen
00:27:33would suggest
00:27:34that he has been
00:27:34exceptionally lenient
00:27:36thus far
00:27:37to Maradona again
00:27:42two
00:27:45high jumping
00:27:47South Korean defenders
00:27:48in fact
00:27:52the Argentinian
00:27:54was pushing
00:27:54and therefore
00:27:55it will be a kick
00:27:56to South Korea
00:27:57young say
00:28:11trying a long ball
00:28:13forward
00:28:13to the 여기
00:28:27and therefore
00:28:29they would be
00:28:31willing to
00:28:33better
00:28:34than
00:28:35some

00:28:41having
00:28:41seen
00:28:42come
00:28:43Maradona running, try to outpace the defense, now a chance to take him on, Argentina pushing
00:28:55that ball back for the supporting back four, Guarachaga, Maradona, Maradona, Maradona
00:29:13looking for his forward moving to space, Maradona, Maradona, Maradona, Maradona, Maradona,
00:29:43Maradona, Maradona, Maradona, Maradona, Maradona, Maradona, Maradona, Maradona, Maradona, Maradona, Maradona, Maradona, Maradona, Maradona, Maradona, Maradona, Maradona, Maradona, Maradona, Maradona, Maradona, Maradona, Maradona, Maradona, Maradona, Maradona, Maradona, Maradona, Maradona, Maradona, Maradona, Maradona, Maradona, Maradona, Maradona, Maradona, Maradona, Maradona, Maradona, Maradona, Maradona, Maradona, Maradona, Maradona, Maradona, Maradona, Maradona, Maradona, Maradona, Maradona, Maradona, Maradona, Maradona, Maradona, Maradona, Maradona
00:30:13relaxation loads of time and South Korea not offering them any threat at all as
00:30:20they try to move the ball out just this occasional threat of a fast break which
00:30:25thus far the Argentinians have been well capable of handling
00:30:32Aradona with lots of time and space
00:30:36playing a gentle interpassing game as they move into the Korean half
00:30:41now the Korean defense masses Argentina look for gaps
00:30:54the Argentine team here is just knocking the foul around at will and Korea
00:30:59of course they've got the second half left to go but they're going to have to start coming forward a little bit
00:31:03at two goals down they don't have a whole lot to lose
00:31:11gets away from that challenge
00:31:15took too much on when he should have been looking for his support
00:31:21referee did very well there of course Maradona being the superstar that he is
00:31:25a lot of South Americans are very good actors and hoping to draw penalties when they get in that penalty box
00:31:33there's an amount of speculation with that long ball there were three Argentinian defenders there
00:31:48a three to one ratio is not a good bet
00:31:51kick to Argentina
00:31:52South Korea seems to be despairing a little
00:32:02leaving their two front runners
00:32:04in almost splendid isolation
00:32:06and completely overwhelmed numerically by this Argentinian defense
00:32:10they've got to try to settle down
00:32:11and not put balls forward on pure speculation
00:32:16that was a good ball to Maradona
00:32:20but he was unable to do much with it
00:32:26that's better play they're looking and finding their men
00:32:32trying to build up that better
00:32:35much more of a threat and they've gained a corner from that
00:32:39and the Labatt TV series returns in a moment
00:32:47Simon is one happy little boy
00:32:52he still has his mom

00:33:33it's how great
00:33:35it's fresh cut fries and special tangy sauce
00:33:38it's how great you feel
00:33:39all of this for a limited time only
00:33:42for just 3.49
00:33:44it's how great you feel
00:33:46it's how great you feel
00:33:49I told you
00:33:50at the end of the meal
00:33:52Swiss Chalet okay
00:33:53back in the Olympic Stadium Mexico City
00:34:02score kill still 2-0
00:34:07Argentina content to play this game
00:34:11gentle pace
00:34:12and not take too much out of themselves
00:34:14because Chalet was too far forward
00:34:16and the linesman flag went up for offside
00:34:19ten minutes more of this first half to play
00:34:24with two goal lead for Argentina
00:34:27scores by Valdano in both cases
00:34:30Koreans not offering any major threat
00:34:33and Argentina content to play the game at this easy pace
00:34:46when it can become in fact a quite useful training session for them
00:34:50with a lot of competition left in this World Cup
00:34:52as they are one of the
00:34:54favored teams
00:34:56six teams only have won the World Cup
00:34:59and one would believe that the winner this year will come from the World Cup
00:35:03from those six teams
00:35:06I think the big thing that Argentina has to do here is
00:35:09stay disciplined and stay and play the way that which they are playing now
00:35:12which is relatively easy for them
00:35:13but not to get into that habit too much
00:35:16because I'm sure they're going to have some tougher games down the road
00:35:21there again we shouldn't write the Koreans off
00:35:23there's still a second half to go and we know that they can be an exciting team
00:35:33to be able to really move the first half to do
00:35:36the next half to go to Poc
00:35:39and there again the last half to go and the other one
00:35:41and at the beginning of the next half to try
00:35:43is the best one of the best
00:35:45I'm here for Park Chung Sung, but too many Argentinian defenders.
00:35:56Now a chance of a quick break away, but number 14, Yusti, obstructed there and so it's a kick for Argentina.
00:36:15He's still looking for help, no urgency at all in this Argentinian play.
00:36:29The great Daniel Pacarella of course was unfit for this match, he has had some stomach problems
00:36:36and has lost some weight and as a result he's not 100% fit and the Argentinians therefore
00:36:42left him out of this match and if there was one match where the great defender who loves
00:36:48to come forward, Daniel Pacarella, could be missing in certainly this one.
00:36:52Gives him an extra few days to recover and gives the Argentinians a chance prior.
00:36:59Another defender into their line-up.
00:37:09The Koreans seem to be somewhat overawed by the fact that they are already two goals down
00:37:15and instead of playing like a team, we're seeing a series of individual efforts.
00:37:21And while occasionally individual efforts are absolutely critical and can mean the difference
00:37:25between winning and losing a game and breaking a game open, certainly against a side like this
00:37:30and with the whole of the second half still to go, these individual efforts are unlikely to yield results.
00:37:36But from this kick they may have a chance.
00:37:43Over the head of both defenders and attackers and runs rather lamely into touch and the Argentinians
00:37:50in absolutely no hurry at all to take this throw in.
00:37:53The crowd getting a little restive about this.
00:37:57As we have the wave starting in the stadium.
00:38:02The crowd perhaps hoping that they can inspire a little more action into this game.
00:38:09More writhing and acting from Diego Maradona.
00:38:22I think there may be a little bit of acting in that one.
00:38:24I think the tackle was a harsh one, but I don't think it was that harsh.
00:38:32One of the, I guess, problems of being a big superstar as Maradona is that he's going to get some very special attention
00:38:39and a lot of it sometimes can be very harsh.
00:38:44This is where the referees have a very, very important responsibility to protect all players.
00:38:53And if they are being fouled, and these fouls are clear transgressions of the rules,
00:38:58there's a referee having in their power to do something about it.
00:39:02So far as we've said before, this referee has been quite lenient.
00:39:06It may well be that with a comfortable two-goal lead, the Argentinians will decide to rest Maradona in the second half
00:39:16to save him from further unnecessary punishment because I'm sure they have enough talent in their replacement racks to do this.
00:39:23Maradona well out on the right-hand touch line, possibly to take a rest and also to keep out of trouble a little bit.
00:39:39About four minutes left in this first half. Scored 2-0 in favour of Argentina.
00:39:46Those goals resulting in fact from fouls on Maradona and the resulting set plays producing indirectly in the first case and then directly a goal.
00:39:55Close attention by the Korean players again.
00:40:24Resulting in yet another free kick for Argentina.
00:40:29Some idea of the lack of urgency in this game when you have four Argentinians crowding around the ball from a free kick.
00:40:36No urgency to move up front at all.
00:40:39I think when you're winning as Argentina are so comfortably in a game like this everybody wants the ball all the time.
00:40:45It's a little bit different sometimes when you're losing 2-0 because a lot of people aren't looking for the ball.
00:40:49But right now Argentina is in control of this game very easily.
00:40:52very easily.
00:41:05And the Kiong Hoon Park the victim of that particular foul.
00:41:08And the other day with the ball.
00:41:15Now Korea trying to move that ball around.
00:41:30A little more like a thief.
00:41:56There's one of the more colourful goalkeeping jerseys that we've seen in the competition.
00:42:01Owned by Pompidou.
00:42:03He's not had a difficult game at all.
00:42:05Maldano and Chusty.
00:42:17But badly played ball giving the Korean chance for a long ball.
00:42:23To no avail.
00:42:24Argentina.
00:42:25Now in possession.
00:42:26Maradona.
00:42:27This time struck in the face.
00:42:28And I think at last we're going to see a yellow card.
00:42:29Yes indeed.
00:42:30That's about the sixth foul on Maradona.
00:42:31This half.
00:42:32And a young move who gets the yellow card.
00:42:36Maradona beat him well.
00:42:37And then he just reached his arm out.
00:42:38And just gave a little tap in the face I think.
00:42:43Maradona is the type of player I don't think you want to rush.
00:42:45He's going to see a yellow card.
00:42:46Yes indeed.
00:42:47That's about the sixth foul on Maradona.
00:42:48This half.
00:42:49And a young move who gets the yellow card.
00:42:52Maradona beat him well.
00:42:53Not made him.
00:42:54And then he just reached his arm out.
00:42:55And just gave him a little tap in the face I think.
00:43:04Maradona is the type of player I don't think you want to rush in on too fast.
00:43:07A man has so much talent that you know he can make you look a little foolish.
00:43:10And I think the Korean just through the frustration reached out to have a smack at him there.
00:43:20Puccini there wasting that ball completely.
00:43:23There's the last attack perhaps or a last attempted attack of the South Koreans in this half as the seconds kick away.
00:43:44The referee has already checked his watch once.
00:43:47At any moment now we're going to hear a whistle for the end of the first 45 minutes.
00:43:52Long somewhat tentative ball which Clausen tries to let it run at once.
00:44:01So he crosses it and very lucky to get the goal kick from it.
00:44:04We're almost a minute over the 45 minutes which has been allowed but there's the whistle.
00:44:14The end of half time with the score Argentina 2, South Korea 0.
00:44:19A rather unenterprising first half.
00:44:22Argentina clearly on top.
00:44:24Two goals from Valdana.
00:44:25The La Bat TV series returns in a moment.
00:44:28Let's take a look at the highlights from Olympico Stadium here in Mexico City.
00:44:32As the Argentinians got off to a great start.
00:44:35And Diego Maradona was the key.
00:44:37The left foot is set piece.
00:44:38It's blocked but he heads the ball into the box and there's Jorge Valdana who finds the back of the net.
00:44:43And within the first five minutes quickly it was Argentina out in front of South Korea.
00:44:50Let's take another look at it as Maradona hits the ball to an open.
00:44:53Valdana and he has a chance and they don't miss too many of those.
00:44:56Valdana from Real Madrid and he makes no mistake giving Argentina a 1-0 lead.
00:45:02Here's another look at it from the reverse angle as the Argentinians got off to a great start.
00:45:07And 20 minutes later from another set piece again it's Maradona.
00:45:10This time he left puts it into the box and Valdana once again will get his head on it.
00:45:16And this time beats the Korean goaltender on the right side.
00:45:19And so clearly the Argentinians were the strong team in that first half.
00:45:24And they're well on their way to taking over first place in Group A.
00:45:28They're in the same division as Italy.
00:45:29And of course the Italians squandered a chance for an initial victory as they were tied 1-1 against Bulgaria in there.
00:45:36I've seen that they have some potential to move forward and release their fast moving strikers.
00:45:41But it happened very rarely and the Argentinian defense in particular have had a very easy time of it.
00:45:47So now they must unite as a team and take some chances because with a 2-goal lead Argentina are certainly not going to press.
00:46:06It's very hot in this stadium today. Very hot indeed and therefore Argentina will be very content to play this game as slowly as they possibly can.
00:46:19Unfortunately, Korea will have to try to press forward if they are to make any inroads into this Argentinian lead.
00:46:27And in these very high temperatures around 30 degrees.
00:46:32And there we are. That is 3-0. This could become a route.
00:46:37This could become a route. All too easy. Very gentle build-up.
00:46:42And tapping the ball in nonchalantly.
00:46:45Again, Maradona beats two players, crosses the ball, and there's Valdano to score his third goal.
00:46:52Well, there's the hat-trick, the first hat-trick of the 86 World Cup.
00:46:56The ball coming off a Korean defender.
00:47:00Tipped by the goalkeeper, touched by a defender, but easy taking for Valdano who undoubtedly is enjoying his first game of the 1986 World Cup.
00:47:10And now there's absolutely no reason for Argentina to do other than take this game very, very easily and use it as a training session.
00:47:17And every reason indeed for South Korea to take some chances and press forward.
00:47:21But they seem to be somewhat overwhelmed by this Argentinian side and haven't settled down into the fast-striking, counter-attacking team that we have been led to believe that they are.
00:47:31Argentina are prepared to put that ball out and continue to frustrate these three of them.
00:47:47Well, so far from Argentina's point of view, it's been the Maradona-Valdano show, and maybe it's the sign of things to come in more games.
00:47:54Valdano looking very sharp and opportunistic, and of course Maradona setting him up very well.
00:48:01What we do, the goalkeeper, may as well take his time and play this ball out to the edge of the area, because he's not going to get too many touches on this ball during this game.
00:48:27Certainly the way he's been running so far. Very long ball, almost into the penalty area, and Argentina on the attack again.
00:48:34Here comes the cross, but this time, well over the goal line.
00:48:39Maradona certainly enjoying the relaxation that a three-goal buffer can bring, and if they give him some time and space, he might well delight us with his artistry.
00:48:50With three goals ahead, the Argentinians are likely to find space and thoroughly enjoy this second half, whereas the luckless South Koreans have got to try to avoid this becoming a rout.
00:49:05I think in both cases for South Korea, in the start of the game where they gave away a goal so quickly, the worst thing that could have happened was the same thing at the start of the second half, and it has happened.
00:49:14So, again, Argentina seeming to have their way.
00:49:21Lots of space. Lots of space again.
00:49:24Chorachaga, who received it.
00:49:29Now we're seeing the Argentinians playing this game as they love to play it.
00:49:38Moving to space, taking their time. Lots of time to settle onto this ball.
00:49:44Quite pressure by the Korean defense.
00:49:49Gaining a free kick, and the referee suddenly changing his tune, beginning to dish out yellow cards somewhat at random.
00:49:59Very hesitant in the first half, but deciding that in their desperation the South Koreans may be resorting to some tackling which doesn't concentrate on possession of the ball.
00:50:11So, number 19 receives the wrath of the referee.
00:50:15No, it's a substitute. I think it's a substitute coming on from South Korea.
00:50:19Number 19, Byung-Yu Byung.
00:50:24And they've already brought on one substitute, so that's their ration for this game.
00:50:29And those players that are on the field now have got to face a fairly difficult 40 minutes remaining in this second half.
00:50:38I think they're going to know they've been in a game today.
00:50:41They're certainly going to have been run around this field by this very talented Argentinian side,
00:50:47who don't seem to be threatened at all by what had been promised as a rather enterprising South Korean team.
00:50:55So it's a free kick to Argentina, and it's not so far away, and therefore spells danger.
00:51:06Certainly fooled the defense there.
00:51:15Everybody anticipating a cross, and instead he chipped it to the front-running Argentinian player, and that could have been another goal.
00:51:22We may see some very interesting moves by Argentina, who can certainly rehearse their set plays in this game.
00:51:31Nothing to lose except, of course, to those other teams who have scouts out watching them.
00:51:37When you give Argentina this much time to play, and especially with a 3-0 lead, they're going to have fun,
00:51:41and they'll probably do a lot of things they may not do in a game that's 0-0,
00:51:44but I'm sure we're going to see some very attractive football from them.
00:51:48In the sense that the general public was the most successful childhood.
00:51:49Remember it?
00:51:50In the sense that the world had people in the world to be in the world and have been one of the most successful
00:51:56people in the world, and they're going to have to be in the world.
00:51:58It's a very difficult point.
00:52:00It's a very difficult point.
00:52:13Joming Cook trying a long through ball, is accepted by the defence, now we're seeing some precision passing, Maradona once again held back, the referee allowing the advantage and then changed his mind.
00:52:43Very difficult for a referee to win in situations like that as Joming Cook performed yet another rugby tackle on Maradona, referee half through playing an advantage rule and then changed his mind, so it's a free kick to Argentina.
00:52:59Certainly the Maradona of 1982 would have been engaged in histrionics by this stage on a major scale and I think the four years of football in Europe have certainly helped him to mature and withstand some of the aggravations that a player of his status has to be capable of handling.
00:53:19I'm sure he's been waiting these four years too to prove his critics wrong because he did not have a good series in 1982 but so far he started this one in tremendous form and I think it augurs well for Argentina that it could be a good series for them.
00:53:33Another testing time for Yun Kyo Oh, the Korean goalkeeper, the wall forms, wondering how they might be fooled by this particular set play, Maradona ever the general, captain of Argentina of course orchestrating this set play.
00:53:51Two Argentinians just on the edge of the box, several hovering around the ball, one moving out to the right side now, Maradona moving in, decides to bend in and the goalkeeper punches rather than catching, seems to prefer punching to catching, not quite sure why, except of course that that ball from Maradona was probably spinning viciously.
00:54:14They can't afford to keep giving away these free kicks to Maradona, it's proved very costly in the first half and it could do them in again if they're not careful.
00:54:22Another chance for the rehearsal, the wall being brought back by the referee, somewhat reluctant as ever to move back to the ten yards, now they are back, goalkeeper nervously checking the wall, an Argentinian in the wall being pushed around,
00:54:43that ricochets off, a defender I think for a corner.
00:54:49Referees have experienced some problems in these early games with getting that wall back ten yards and I think later they may be handing out some yellow cards to indicate some urgency that this wall does get back for ten yards and therefore gives the team which has been awarded the free kick the advantage it deserves.
00:55:08having all the moves and all the advantages of knowing what they're going to do against the defense which isn't quite sure but here now a set play in the form of a corner.
00:55:17low, wide corner, well handled by the defense but the Argentinians not deciding to mount a precision attack and Korea trying to move that ball out.
00:55:34good ball, now a foot race, unfortunately not enough strength in numbers, almost a mix up by the Argentinian defense.
00:55:49and Pupido having as much action there as he's likely to have for the next few minutes perhaps but that could have been a costly error.
00:55:55certainly there we saw an example of the South Korean pace.
00:56:02from Kun Cha doing a determined and high speed run down that left side but coming to no avail when we didn't have enough South Koreans in the area to fasten on the end of that cross.
00:56:14so now Argentina prepared to walk this ball out and wasting his ball there because Pasquale was well offside.
00:56:23slow pace game but Argentina content of course to have this game played at the slow pace particularly since it's very hot.
00:56:30speculative shots to no avail.
00:56:33Pupido is not going to have any challenge to his talent in the Argentinian goal with shots of that caliber.
00:56:40I think in Korea some of the frustration is starting to set in.
00:56:43you can see it in some of the tackles and a shot like that from that distance is very optimistic.
00:56:55Pupido of the rather interestingly designed shirt having a chat to the cameraman while the ball is retrieved.
00:57:03nobody seems to be in much of a hurry and the Labatt TV series returns in a moment.
00:57:13Pupido of the as we return to the Olympic Stadium firing that shot high over the crossbar.
00:57:19score Argentina three South Korea nil.
00:57:26in very hot conditions.
00:57:2930 degrees as we see the heavily oppressed Korean goalkeeper.
00:57:36had a lot of action today as opposed to his counterpart Pupido who had very little.
00:57:43but he may get some now if they pass it back and let it roll back which they do.
00:57:49I think to protect the Korean goalkeeper I don't think he had much chance on those three goals.
00:57:53They were very difficult for him.
00:57:58A long long ball in this rarefied atmosphere of Mexico City.
00:58:02Jukwang Ray ships it back to the goalkeeper.
00:58:15Now the Koreans moving this ball out the Argentinians not offering any pressure at this moment.
00:58:19But now the defense is massing in this defensive third.
00:58:23South Korea pushing it back for support and moving to find space.
00:58:26Still continuing to put forward these long balls in the hope that their fleet footed front runners can latch onto them.
00:58:35But it's a very energy consuming activity.
00:58:40In this sort of heat and made doubly difficult by the fact that we're well over 7,000 feet.
00:58:47Which makes running pretty strenuous down.
00:58:50The crowd coming a little bit to life here trying to get a little more action into this game.
00:59:07Just for a moment there was a little more space available to the South Koreans.
00:59:17But they were unable to seize on their opportunity and so we now have a wide ball trying to spread the defense.
00:59:25But the South Korean defenders covering very well and anticipating this time.
00:59:31This time.
00:59:59The referee.
01:00:00Mr. Sanchez of Spain just having a quick word with the Argentinian defender there.
01:00:07Now a chance.
01:00:09Just a left foot shot.
01:00:12Nowhere close to its target.
01:00:15From Khun Char.
01:00:18Hitting that one high over the bar.
01:00:21On the few chances that the red-shirted players are going to receive they cannot afford to be as careless as that.
01:00:27The Argentine crowd cheering their team right now and I'm sure very happy with what they see.
01:00:33Just over an hour gone in this competition.
01:00:34The first game for these two teams.
01:00:35Argentina.
01:00:36Argentina.
01:00:37Probably.
01:00:38Probably.
01:00:39Not even.
01:00:40Daring to hope.
01:00:41not even.
01:00:45That their first game could be as pleasant and gentle for them as this and an opportunity for them to be as pleasant for them.
01:00:47Just over an hour gone in this competition
01:00:56This first game for these two teams
01:01:00Argentina probably not even daring to hope
01:01:06That their first game could be as pleasant and gentle for them as this
01:01:10And an opportunity for them to try their goal scoring skills
01:01:13Three goals to nil in the lead
01:01:15And not having to work very hard for their victory
01:01:19One of the big things about getting three goals now
01:01:21Is if it does come down to a problem in their division
01:01:23And it's tied of course
01:01:24The more goals they get
01:01:25The better chance they have of getting two on goal average
01:01:27So I'm sure they're going to look to score more goals
01:01:30Rusty coming in
01:01:33Chance for Maradona
01:01:36But just wanting to take on the entire South Korean defense on his own
01:01:43And eventually losing possession
01:01:46Pista
01:01:54Aldano the scorer of three goals
01:02:03Undoubtedly unless we hear other information from the Iroquato game
01:02:07The first player in this year's World Cup to score the hat trick
01:02:10And in the running for the Golden Boot Award of course
01:02:16For the top goal scorer in the World Cup
01:02:19Which may just have crossed his mind
01:02:21Now the Koreans beginning to link
01:02:26Showing their speed
01:02:29And not quite getting that cross pulled far enough back for the oncoming support
01:02:35But undoubtedly their nature is to go forward and to use their pace
01:02:42And in that first half
01:02:44Suggestions that they were almost overwhelmed by the occasion
01:02:49And towards the latter end of the first half
01:02:52Almost playing like 11 individuals
01:02:54When we've seen the brief glimpses of them combining as a team and using their pace
01:02:59They have looked quite threatening
01:03:02The problem they have now of course is besides being down 3-0
01:03:05They've used both their substitutes
01:03:07So in this terrible heat as they start to tire
01:03:10They won't be able to bring on any fresh legs
01:03:12And this may release opportunities for Argentina to score some late goals
01:03:16Ju Sung Kim getting a quick word of admonishment from the referee
01:03:29The Spanish referee Mr. Sanchez
01:03:31Maradona now being challenged
01:03:33Holding his man off
01:03:35Shielding that ball very well
01:03:37And trying to beat him yet again
01:03:38And yet again
01:03:39And very persistent work indeed by Kyunghoon Park
01:03:45Three times Maradona tried to beat him
01:03:54Once to turn him and twice to beat him
01:03:55But eventually succeeded in getting a free kick
01:03:59I think a dangerous thing for Maradona to do though
01:04:02If he doesn't want to get himself injured
01:04:04I think he should just lay the ball off and enjoy the game
01:04:06And start thinking that he's got more games to play here
01:04:09Good shot from the edge of the box
01:04:13Second chance
01:04:14From the corner to Argentina
01:04:17Another opportunity for the Argentinian attack
01:04:26With the South Korean defense under pressure
01:04:28Goalkeeper Young-Kyo Oh
01:04:32Will remember this game I think for some comfortable time
01:04:35Maradona going to take the corner
01:04:36Bend this ball in
01:04:39Argentinians coming in
01:04:41Five of them in the area
01:04:42Oh and that was another good contact
01:04:45And just wide of the post
01:04:46Christie
01:04:49Close with that one
01:04:51Here we see it again
01:04:54Christie just heads the ball by
01:04:56Interesting point here to note in all these
01:04:58These things is that Maradona is taking
01:05:00All the free kicks
01:05:01All the corner kicks
01:05:02And they're using that left foot of his to a total advantage
01:05:04Of Culli with a lot of room on the edge of the area
01:05:19Taking his man on beat him beautifully
01:05:21Oh
01:05:23Too complacent
01:05:25Losing concentration
01:05:28And even one of the world's best footballers
01:05:31Can
01:05:33Map a chance like that
01:05:35Lots of time, no pressure
01:05:36Haskele beats, cuts the ball back
01:05:38An easy shot for Maradona and there it goes
01:05:40I think he had the goal in his mind before
01:05:42It was in the net
01:05:43Almost prepared to celebrate before he struck it
01:05:46I think
01:05:47Maradona seems to have recovered from the early
01:05:56Close attentions of the Korean defense
01:05:58He has, as we said, a suspect knee
01:06:00And one of those early battles
01:06:02Did hit him on the knee
01:06:03But he seems to have recovered
01:06:05Much to the relief of all the South
01:06:06American supporters of Argentina
01:06:10Oh, beautiful playing
01:06:14Now enjoying their
01:06:16Indulgence
01:06:17In their skills
01:06:18Putting on something of an exhibition
01:06:23But gradually moving that ball forward
01:06:25Trying
01:06:26With these lateral passes
01:06:28To spread the defense a bit
01:06:29And force the Koreans to run
01:06:31Here we have the
01:06:33First touch plays
01:06:35And the
01:06:35One-two plays
01:06:37As the Argentinians
01:06:38With no pressure on them
01:06:39And a three-goal lead
01:06:40Can afford to indulge
01:06:41And make this
01:06:42A very entertaining
01:06:44First outing for them
01:06:45In 1986
01:06:46Just the occasional threat
01:06:48From a fast-breaking Korean
01:06:49And they've gained a free kick
01:06:51From this on the edge of the box
01:06:53So this could be dangerous
01:06:54And an opportunity for them
01:06:55To win back
01:06:56A goal
01:06:57Charboom-Kum will doubtless
01:07:02Have
01:07:03A go at this one
01:07:06Pompidou may have a little bit of work here
01:07:10Certainly trying to get his wall organized
01:07:12Seems to be satisfied with it
01:07:14Let's hope that Mr. Sanchez of Spain
01:07:16Is satisfied that this wall will get back
01:07:19For ten yards
01:07:20A bit of orchestration by the referee
01:07:24A large
01:07:26Argentinian wall
01:07:28Seven-man wall in fact
01:07:29Gigantic wall
01:07:31Pompidou should have very little
01:07:34Goal to mind
01:07:36It's almost like the team photograph
01:07:37That we're seeing here
01:07:38With a seven-man wall
01:07:39Only a few of them missing of course
01:07:41Four men missing only
01:07:42So it's a massive wall
01:07:44For these South Koreans
01:07:45To swerve this wall around
01:07:46And it seems to me
01:07:47To be a little closer than ten yards
01:07:48But they have to be careful out here
01:07:50They don't block the goalie's vision
01:07:51The large wall was big enough
01:07:55And the breaking wall
01:07:56Was big enough on the second time
01:07:58But Korea's still in possession
01:07:59But Pompidou
01:08:02Not being tested
01:08:06And the
01:08:07Argentinian defense now moving forward
01:08:11And the World Cup 86 on CBC Sports
01:08:13Continues in a moment
01:08:14Back in the Olympic Stadium
01:08:18Still the score 3-0
01:08:19But during our absence
01:08:21We had perhaps the best chance of all
01:08:23By the South Koreans
01:08:24Byung Byung-ju
01:08:26Ran down the right flank
01:08:29And put in a beautiful cross
01:08:30Right on to the feet
01:08:32Of Choi Soon-ho
01:08:34Who unfortunately shot
01:08:36Just over the bar
01:08:38But definitely the best challenge
01:08:40That the South Koreans
01:08:41Have mounted in this game
01:08:42Showing their speed and enterprise
01:08:44Which we've unfortunately
01:08:46Seen too little of
01:08:47Foul there by Garek
01:08:53It will be a kick to South Korea
01:08:55Argentinian substitution being prepared
01:09:00Given instructions
01:09:01Beginning to try to move this ball around
01:09:11And trying to stretch this
01:09:14Argentinian defense
01:09:16Latterly
01:09:17And at least beginning to
01:09:18Look as though they are a team
01:09:20And whoopee-doo
01:09:25Concees a corner
01:09:26Caught moving backwards
01:09:28And whoopee-doo
01:09:35Concees that corner
01:09:36From this cross
01:09:37Caught him going backwards
01:09:42And now we go to
01:09:43Chris Cuspert
01:09:43For an update on the
01:09:44USSR Hungary game
01:09:46Well Jeff it is now
01:09:48Four to nothing
01:09:49For the Soviet Union
01:09:50A great goal
01:09:51As Pavel Yakovinko
01:09:53Slides the ball through
01:09:54To Igor Yurinchuk
01:09:56And he has a wide open net
01:09:57To Soviets
01:09:58Humiliating Hungary
01:09:59Four to nothing
01:09:59Back in the
01:10:06Olympic Stadium
01:10:07Oh and much better combination
01:10:14And a good attempt
01:10:16They are blocked
01:10:16By the Argentinian defense
01:10:17But now
01:10:18Losing 3-0
01:10:21The South Koreans
01:10:22At last beginning
01:10:23To recognize
01:10:24That they
01:10:25Have only the slightest hope
01:10:27By playing as a team
01:10:28And this they are doing
01:10:31And
01:10:31Pompidou is being given
01:10:33Some work at last
01:10:34Argentina is starting
01:10:35To look a little bit
01:10:36A little shaky here
01:10:37They have given away
01:10:38A couple of bad passes
01:10:39Which has gotten Korea
01:10:40Right back in
01:10:40With a few good chances
01:10:41And that so often happens
01:10:45Of course
01:10:45When the pace is allowed
01:10:47To slacken
01:10:47It is very difficult
01:10:49To move into a higher gear
01:10:52And the Koreans
01:10:54Looking more threatening
01:10:55Now than they have at any other time
01:10:57In the game
01:10:57And if they don't get in
01:10:58Each other's way
01:10:59Yes and a long shot
01:11:01Caught Pompidou
01:11:02Absolutely fast asleep
01:11:04Well outside the area
01:11:06We would expect shots
01:11:08To come from well outside
01:11:09The area
01:11:10In this rarefied atmosphere
01:11:11And here he was caught asleep
01:11:12Some tremendous pressure
01:11:14By the Koreans
01:11:14And it pays off
01:11:15What a great shot
01:11:16And again
01:11:17Long shot
01:11:18Pompidou
01:11:19It dipped on him
01:11:20And I'm sure that's part
01:11:21Of this rarefied air
01:11:22But good pressure by Korea
01:11:24Sustained pressure
01:11:25Rewarded by a goal
01:11:26Well outside the box
01:11:28And number 10
01:11:30Park
01:11:31Bringing Korea
01:11:33To three goals to one
01:11:35And well deserved
01:11:37Because in that last five minutes
01:11:38Having posed
01:11:39An earlier threat
01:11:40From Choi Soon-Hu
01:11:42They began to play as a team
01:11:45Began to find one another
01:11:46And in response to that goal
01:11:48Argentina
01:11:49Substitute
01:11:50Number 20
01:11:51Carlos Daniel Tapia
01:11:51Carlos Daniel Tapia
01:11:54Will come on
01:11:55As substitute for Argentina
01:11:57Well hopefully this will
01:11:59Inspire Korea
01:12:00To keep going forward now
01:12:01They have nothing to lose
01:12:02And they showed us
01:12:03That they can play
01:12:04Tremendous shot
01:12:07The crowd
01:12:13Rising in support
01:12:15Of the underdogs
01:12:15Who've shown
01:12:17Some spirit now
01:12:18In beginning to combine
01:12:19At long last
01:12:20As a team
01:12:21And here they go again
01:12:22Threatening forward
01:12:22Nodding back in support
01:12:25Looking to spread
01:12:27This Argentinian defense
01:12:28And Argentina now
01:12:32Being forced to take
01:12:33This game much more seriously
01:12:34Still a very good
01:12:37Blanket
01:12:38And another Argentinian
01:12:39Substitution
01:12:40This is their second
01:12:41And final one
01:12:42Number 16
01:12:43Olatiko Acia
01:12:45Olatiko Acia
01:12:47Julio Jorge
01:12:48Olatiko Acia
01:12:49Coming on
01:12:50As the second
01:12:50Argentinian substitute
01:12:52Well that goal Jeff
01:13:04Has definitely picked this game up
01:13:05The crowd's reacted
01:13:06And they're starting to support
01:13:08Taria which is great
01:13:08So number 2
01:13:11So number 2 comes off
01:13:11Batista
01:13:12And we now have both
01:13:14Argentinian substitute
01:13:16On
01:13:17Carlos Daniel Tapia
01:13:18And Julio Jorge
01:13:21Olatiko
01:13:22Chicochia
01:13:23Now Argentina
01:13:25Now Argentina a little more urgency
01:13:26Caldano trying for his fall
01:13:29But young COO
01:13:32Able to handle that one
01:13:33Now the pace of the game
01:13:35Suddenly
01:13:36Increased
01:13:37The atmosphere
01:13:38here becoming quite electrified Korea showing some courage in fighting back
01:13:46when they look to be completely out of this game and to be completely
01:13:49dispirited but they've begun to play as a team
01:13:53showing a little pace
01:13:58and Pompidou coming bravely catching that ball almost losing it and getting more
01:14:03work than he ever thought he was going to get in this game
01:14:18ponderous ball downfield but nodded back headed by that Argentinian for South
01:14:25Korean goal kick
01:14:28and as the South Korean brings this ball out over to Chris Cuthbert for an update on the Soviet
01:14:40Hungary game
01:14:41Jeff the Soviets are really pouring it on they have scored yet again and it's a pretty goal
01:14:49as they work the give and go F Tyshenko through to the man who scored the last goal
01:14:53Yerenchuk we'll watch it coming up momentarily as it's another pretty Soviet goal
01:14:58as the Shanko to Yerenchuk and as he's being tackled the ball goes off the post and into the net
01:15:03five nothing Soviet Jeff
01:15:05very interesting as we return to the Olympic Stadium
01:15:11thank you Chris for that update the Soviet Union is now the leading scoring team in the competition
01:15:17Argentina second leading with three goals but certainly very few all trying for his fourth goal
01:15:27but very few would expect the Soviets to be so far ahead of Hungary
01:15:35though I think there are many who regard the Soviets as a very very likely team to be there or thereabouts
01:15:41in the final stages of this World Cup
01:15:48certainly one would have expected the Soviets to have had a much more difficult match
01:15:52than the Argentinians against the South Koreans
01:15:55Argentina leading three goals to one
01:15:57but South Korea in this last ten minutes or so
01:16:00playing much better than they did in the first half
01:16:04certainly finding their men much better and although this is the wrong direction
01:16:10and they must go forward as they are doing now
01:16:13certainly showing some spirit
01:16:15and their ability to hit good shots from well outside the box
01:16:21another chance
01:16:25build up was good and that final through pass didn't quite reach its target
01:16:30but getting more of play having more possession now
01:16:35beginning to swing this ball about with an increased amount of confidence
01:16:39tackling back
01:16:40and Argentina very happy to clear that ball and now breaking out themselves
01:16:46vicious shots well blocked
01:16:55of course one of the big
01:16:57of course one of the big
01:16:58of course
01:16:59and as South Korea substitute number five
01:17:02the LaBaf TV series returns in a moment
01:17:04we have seen during this tournament here
01:17:10a much more sportive action than the one we saw since the beginning of George Schwartz
01:17:15probably will be a pleasure to talk about this Argentina
01:17:18but we are going to get the ball
01:17:22Very, very, very intervention plongée.
01:17:25What we could see earlier, the pain was coming
01:17:28after a very, very powerful shot from Maradona,
01:17:31which was deviated by the Argentine's hand
01:17:33and which had suffered a very, very violent shock with Chocale.
01:17:38Than they did in the first half.
01:17:41They seem to have overcome their inferiority complex
01:17:44and are playing with much more confidence than we saw in the first half.
01:17:49Kim Yusung, foul there, another free kick,
01:17:54in a dangerous position, in a central position
01:17:56and only about 15 meters outside the box.
01:18:01Certainly playing with much more spirit and much more as a team
01:18:04than we saw in that disastrous first half for them.
01:18:08Argentina being made to work this half.
01:18:10As he breaks away here, it's a little bit of a nasty tackle.
01:18:13He was away from him and he just clipped his...
01:18:15There was no attempt there to play the ball
01:18:16and I'm quite surprised that we didn't see a yellow card on that.
01:18:21The result of that tackle means that he needs attention.
01:18:27One good thing here is we're seeing Korea coming forward,
01:18:30starting to believe in themselves.
01:18:32Who knows what can happen.
01:18:33They could score another goal here,
01:18:34but it'll be good for their next game.
01:18:36They build their confidence back up as well, one way or another.
01:18:38And Pompidou just marshalling his defence
01:18:47because this is a dangerous position for South Korea to take this free kick.
01:18:53And while they organise this free kick,
01:18:57let's go back to Chris Cuthbert for another update.
01:19:02Now we'll wait and take this kick and here he comes.
01:19:07But South Korea still on the box and offside, but so close.
01:19:13I think it was a good save on the second attempt by Pompidou,
01:19:16but the Byung-ju was just offside, only a metre offside.
01:19:21Again, sustained pressure by Korea.
01:19:24There he is, he's offside,
01:19:26but in the same token, a good save by Pompidou.
01:19:28So, much more enterprise by the South Korean side,
01:19:39making this a much more entertaining game
01:19:41than would have been anticipated in the first half
01:19:44when they were undoubtedly overwhelmed by the opposition,
01:19:46never settled down,
01:19:48and tried to do it on an individual basis.
01:19:52And the crowd whistling in derision
01:19:54when the Argentinians push this ball back to their goalkeeper.
01:20:01Aldano getting his head to that,
01:20:03but not doing this with much urgency.
01:20:10And now over to Chris Cuthbert.
01:20:12No, we're not going over to Chris Cuthbert for an update.
01:20:14We'll watch a little more of this game.
01:20:16And so South Korea play this ball out
01:20:25and move into the Argentinian half.
01:20:27Long probing ball.
01:20:33The Argentinians clear, but not to anywhere in particular.
01:20:37And South Korea, therefore, have the possession and waste it.
01:20:40It's good to see, though, that Korea is still coming forward and trying.
01:20:46They want to try and regain some of that confidence,
01:20:48and they seem to be doing it.
01:20:48Now the game has almost taken out in a different picture
01:20:50where you see Argentina clearing the balls out of the back,
01:20:53and it's almost a reverse of what we saw before.
01:20:55Really bring the game to light and life
01:20:59if they can score another goal.
01:21:01Maradona certainly taking it easy now.
01:21:07Not enjoying the prospect of chasing after the ball.
01:21:11Much, much happier when the ball is coming to him.
01:21:14And South Korea mount another attack moving forward.
01:21:20And battled unfairly by Garek.
01:21:24Therefore, another kick to South Korea.
01:21:26For 19, Byung Byung-Ju really started off this
01:21:30revival by South Korea.
01:21:32That's a nice ball nodded in.
01:21:34Can anybody settle onto that and get a shot in?
01:21:37Oh, good covering by Pompidou,
01:21:41but still Korea attacking
01:21:42and showing now the pace that we'd all been waiting for.
01:21:45And it's now coming to light quite late in the half.
01:21:50The linesman made the decision there.
01:21:52And the Argentine defender will get this throw,
01:21:58but five minutes left,
01:22:00and one is left with the speculation
01:22:02of what might have happened
01:22:03had this South Korean team settled earlier
01:22:05and shown some of the teamwork
01:22:08that they've given us in this last 20 minutes.
01:22:11They've really made Argentina work.
01:22:14But with a three-goal lead
01:22:16and a very, very easy first half,
01:22:20they gave themselves far too much to do.
01:22:22But I don't think we've seen the last of this team,
01:22:25and I think they will entertain us
01:22:26in their future games
01:22:27now that they've had their first case
01:22:29of playing in this year's World Cup final.
01:22:34Maradona closely attended
01:22:36and collects the free kick there.
01:22:39And now we go over to Chris Cuthbert for an update.
01:22:43Well, Jeff, the route continues.
01:22:44This is a line of car for the Soviet Union.
01:22:46He stopped, but Rodinov continues through,
01:22:48and, yes, the Soviets have scored again.
01:22:51It's 6-0 late in the second half.
01:22:56So we're back with a 3-1 game
01:22:58in Mexico City's Olympic Stadium.
01:23:03Korea having made a surprising
01:23:05and very satisfying comeback in this second half
01:23:09to score a goal.
01:23:11Three goals by Argentina in the first half.
01:23:14They haven't scored in this half,
01:23:16and Korea have showed us
01:23:17something of the teamwork
01:23:20and the speed
01:23:21that they brought with them
01:23:23in terms of a reputation
01:23:25to these World Cup finals.
01:23:26But they've left it
01:23:27far too late
01:23:29as we move into the last five minutes
01:23:30of this game.
01:23:33But undoubtedly,
01:23:34their analysis of their second half performance
01:23:36will give them some cause for optimism,
01:23:38whereas their first half
01:23:40could only leave them despondent.
01:23:44Now Argentina moving this ball about
01:23:46as the Korean defense come out
01:23:47to try to stifle their opportunities
01:23:49and to reduce their space.
01:23:50Laying the ball around
01:23:56somewhat speculatively
01:23:58and laterally
01:23:59rather than moving this forward
01:24:02where they can get a chance
01:24:03for a strike on goal.
01:24:06But quite content
01:24:07to waste time
01:24:09and simply interpass the ball.
01:24:12But almost
01:24:14a retrieval of that possession
01:24:16by the South Korean team.
01:24:17But Argentina quite content
01:24:19to push this ball
01:24:20in any direction
01:24:21because they don't need
01:24:22to score goals
01:24:23at this stage
01:24:23with a two-goal lead.
01:24:26Maradona might try
01:24:27for a quick left footer here
01:24:28but very closely attended.
01:24:32Doesn't get his cross in
01:24:34but does gain a corner.
01:24:37Park Young-Hoon
01:24:38in close attention
01:24:39and marking him well.
01:24:41But it is a corner to Argentina.
01:24:44Argentina's showing us
01:24:45what they can do
01:24:46when they're left alone
01:24:47to push the ball around
01:24:48and right now
01:24:49the Koreans of course
01:24:50must be feeling this heat
01:24:51and when you don't have that ball
01:24:53it becomes a very difficult thing
01:24:54to try and get back
01:24:55when the Argentines
01:24:56are playing like this
01:24:57and stroking the ball about.
01:25:04Argentina are in no hurry
01:25:05at all to take this corner.
01:25:07Mr. Sanchez helping them out
01:25:08by being the provider
01:25:09by being the provider
01:25:09of the ball
01:25:10and a different corner
01:25:14taker this time
01:25:15Tapir
01:25:16who came on
01:25:17as a substitute
01:25:18well headed out
01:25:21by the South Korean defense.
01:25:26Tapir again
01:25:27moving it in
01:25:29Quistey trying a long shot
01:25:31but
01:25:31the goalkeeper
01:25:33well forward
01:25:35of his six yard area
01:25:36and took that very safely
01:25:37good coverage by his body
01:25:39wrapped those arms
01:25:39around the ball.
01:25:42Now South Korea
01:25:43don't seem to be in a hurry
01:25:44but they're giving
01:25:44their goalkeeper
01:25:45a chance to send this ball
01:25:46well upfield
01:25:47by kicking from the hands
01:25:48and it is a long ball
01:25:52just outside the area
01:25:53but not enough Koreans
01:25:55up front to take it
01:25:56and it rolls harmlessly
01:25:57out for a goal kick.
01:26:09Pompidou
01:26:09who we thought
01:26:10would have little or no work
01:26:12in this half
01:26:12certainly has been
01:26:14put under pressure
01:26:15and has conceded
01:26:17one goal
01:26:17to take this kick
01:26:20with only
01:26:20something in the order
01:26:22of a couple of minutes
01:26:22remaining.
01:26:24South Korea
01:26:25having clearly
01:26:25lost this game
01:26:26by an inept performance
01:26:27in the first 20 minutes
01:26:28but have made amends
01:26:30in terms of their
01:26:31psychological confidence
01:26:33in the
01:26:34last 20-25 minutes
01:26:36of the second half
01:26:37by playing
01:26:38with much more confidence.
01:26:41Finding their men
01:26:42moving forward
01:26:44with a little more
01:26:45incisiveness
01:26:45and maybe having
01:26:47a shot
01:26:47no
01:26:48decides against it
01:26:49the man's offside
01:26:49waiting too long
01:26:50and he won the
01:26:51two or three meters
01:26:52offside
01:26:53but much more reason
01:26:55for them to go back
01:26:56into the dressing room
01:26:57despite a 3-1 loss
01:26:58feeling a little better
01:26:59about the fact
01:27:00that they can play
01:27:00when they settle down
01:27:01and don't allow themselves
01:27:02to be overawed
01:27:03by the opposition.
01:27:04but it'll give them
01:27:05some confidence
01:27:05to go into the next
01:27:06game with
01:27:06and they've really
01:27:08come back.
01:27:08They lost it
01:27:09in that first 20 minutes
01:27:10when they tried to play
01:27:10just too defensive
01:27:11which is not their
01:27:12style of play
01:27:13and it backfired on them.
01:27:14Very unfortunate.
01:27:15nicely controlled
01:27:37looking for help
01:27:38and moving well
01:27:39on the left
01:27:40good interception
01:27:42and anticipation
01:27:43but the flag was up
01:27:44because the South Korean
01:27:45attacker was just
01:27:46a meter offside.
01:27:5090 minutes
01:27:51has gone
01:27:52so it will be up
01:27:54to Mr. Sanchez
01:27:54now to decide
01:27:55how much extra time
01:27:56has been added on
01:27:57for injury.
01:27:57the Argentinians
01:28:01well satisfied
01:28:03with a relatively
01:28:03easy first game
01:28:04despite the heat
01:28:05good practice
01:28:08of some of their
01:28:09set plays
01:28:10and opportunity
01:28:11for their strikers
01:28:12to get on the end
01:28:13of the ball
01:28:13to score goals.
01:28:21Pitch resembling
01:28:22something of a
01:28:22battlefield at the moment
01:28:23with both the Argentinian
01:28:25and the South Korean
01:28:26injured in that tackle.
01:28:37Valdano
01:28:38the goal scorer
01:28:39seems to have
01:28:42an ankle problem
01:28:44and it's
01:28:51Young Young Hwan
01:28:51for South Korea
01:28:52who's in trouble
01:28:54so far
01:28:56the trainers
01:28:56are being kept
01:28:57off the pitch
01:28:58they cannot
01:29:01come on
01:29:01until the referee
01:29:02calls them on
01:29:03there's Valdano
01:29:04up on his feet
01:29:05again
01:29:05the goal scorer
01:29:06for Argentina
01:29:07ah yes
01:29:11the wounded
01:29:12are mobile again
01:29:14a few seconds left
01:29:15before
01:29:16the final whistle
01:29:17goes
01:29:17it's a kick
01:29:19to Argentina
01:29:20chance for them
01:29:22to add to their score
01:29:23but they
01:29:25elect instead
01:29:26to
01:29:27play the ball
