Cincinnati Bengals Defensive Coordinator Al Golden on State of Defense in Minicamp
Transcript
00:00How would you proceed adding a veteran's safety?
00:02Are you pretty good with the safety room?
00:03Yeah, again, I don't, I mean, we have a great personnel department.
00:06We relied on them heavily for the three picks that we had on defense.
00:09We hit on all of them.
00:11And I feel like they do it way better than we do it
00:15in terms of the marriage between needs and, you know,
00:23things that are open right now.
00:24And then also, you know, looking at it from the standpoint of a cap.
00:31So if there's opportunities to make our team better,
00:35I know they're going to do that.
00:36They did that when I was here last time.
00:38And I really think whether it was waivers with Joe Bozzi last time I was here
00:42or we went out and got Clay Johnston and Keiondre Jones
00:46and all those guys that played linebacker,
00:47that ended up being a really good group because of what they did upstairs.
00:51Are you moving those corners around to cross-train them
00:53or can you do that in the season?
00:56Yeah, we'll see.
00:57We'll see where it goes.
00:58It's a little bit early for that.
00:59But I think, you know, they show they, again,
01:02it's one thing to be smart and it's one thing to love football.
01:05But to love the approach and the process the way they do,
01:09that's what's been awesome every day.
01:10And that's what motivates us as coaches to be better every day.
01:13So I think those guys' approach is like give me more,
01:16let me do more things, let me play corner, let me play safety,
01:18let me play nickel, let me play dime.
01:20And so they're telling us by their actions that they can receive the information,
01:29digest it from multiple positions,
01:32and obviously ultimately that's going to make us better.
01:34You've obviously seen the training camp practices in the afternoon.
01:37You've experienced that.
01:38Morning this year is different.
01:39What went into that from your perspective?
01:41Do you think it's going to have an impact?
01:42No, coach had a plan.
01:44You know, at the end of last year, you know, prior to my involvement at all,
01:48coach had a plan for what he wanted it to look like both in the offseason
01:52and then preseason camp.
01:54And our job is to execute that plan and make it the best plan possible.
01:57And he gives us that form as coordinators and as a staff.
02:01So obviously we've contributed to that.
02:05But I think he's got a really, you know,
02:07great plan in terms of how we want to approach training camp
02:10with ultimate goal of being starting fast.
02:13What have you seen from Logan Wilson?
02:15Again, I watched – when I got here, I watched last year.
02:19He was hobbled a little bit.
02:21I went back and watched last year's OTAs,
02:23and he looks nothing like either of those right now.
02:27He looks excellent.
02:28I think he's going to be 29 soon.
02:31So I think he's taking care of himself really well.
02:33He's been playing fast.
02:35I see an energy about him right now that's been really good,
02:40and the linebackers are feeding off that.
02:42So I'm excited about him, and I'm obviously grateful to be reunited with him.
