00:00Johnny has the same kind of stories about your Grandpa John as you.
00:11He definitely wasn't your typical card-playing, go-fishing type of Grandpa.
00:17No, he most certainly was not.
00:19Yeah, there's really nothing typical about Grandpa John.
00:24Really was one-of-a-kind, you know?
00:26Not just sweet, but also really, really funny, you know, in his own totally unique way.
00:34I know that from Johnny, too.
00:36He was always trying to make his kids and his grandkids laugh.
00:40Always.
00:45So, uh, how is everything otherwise?
00:50How's everything going with the baby?
00:53Yeah, good.
00:54Good, yeah.
00:56Actually, Sophia and I toured a maternity ward yesterday and just made things feel really real, you know?
01:05Yeah.
01:06And, um, how about the adoption?
01:10Did you find another family yet?
01:12No.
01:14No, we haven't.
01:15And we really need to find one because we don't have much time left.
01:18I just, uh, I checked in with the livestream set up.
01:31Everything's good to go.
01:33So, everyone who cared about Grandpa John will have the chance to say goodbye to him.
01:45How are you?
01:47I should be asking you that.
01:49Not at all.
01:50I want to know.
01:51I care so much about my children and my grandchildren.
01:58Well, that's what's really important to me now.
02:01You're pretty important to all of us, too.
02:11Um, do I understand there's a little bit of a strain between you and your dad?
02:17You know, Grandma, if you don't mind, I'd rather just not talk about my dad today.
02:26Today's about a good man.
02:29An honorable man.
02:30You and John, you had a whole lot of adventures at Black Patch.
02:48Yeah, we did.
02:52What about you and John on the force?
02:55You had quite a few adventures, as I recall.
03:00We had some pretty hairy situations.
03:04And when I think of...
03:06When I think of all the crazy, crazy things we did,
03:11you know, but there was...
03:17Oh, boy, there's just nobody who trusted more to have my back.
03:22Same.
03:25When the pressure was on,
03:26there's no better partner than John Black.
03:40Hello.
03:41Thank you all for coming.
03:43About to begin.
03:43Like sands through the hourglass,
03:57so are the days of our lives.
03:59Kate, are you ready to sit down?
04:17I don't want to say goodbye to Grandpa John.
04:20I'm not ready.
04:25Rachel.
04:26Rachel.
04:26Rachel.
04:26Rachel.
04:26Rachel.
04:26Rachel.
04:26I don't want to say goodbye to Grandpa John, either.
04:35But the thing is,
04:36if you think about him and you remember him,
04:40and you hold him in your heart,
04:43you never really have to say goodbye.
04:46I think he would like you to have that.
04:58So any time you start to miss him and feel sad,
05:02that will help you remember.
05:06Did he bought your hot dogs
05:08and took you to the opening day of the Cubs game?
05:15And you both sang,
05:17take me out to the ball game.
05:26Hey, honey, can I do?
05:28It's okay.
05:29It's okay.
05:30Why don't you, uh,
05:32why don't we head home, okay?
05:34Because I think today might be a little hard to handle for you,
05:37you know?
05:37No, no, no, no.
05:38You have to stay here.
05:41It's...
05:41Hey, Ari and I can take you home.
05:44Would that be okay, Rach?
05:47Yeah?
05:48Yes, I think that would be fine.
05:51Mom.
05:52I'm fine.
05:52Can you share our favorite memories of your Grandpa John?
05:57With my great-grandpa.
05:59Sure will.
06:00We'll be right back after.
06:03Okay.
06:03Bye.
06:05Okay.
06:06Okay.
06:07Give me a...
06:08Give me...
06:10Bye-bye.
06:11Okay.
06:12Bye.
06:14Do you remember?
06:16Grandpa John's always gonna be right eager.
06:19Yeah.
06:21Yeah.
06:22Yes, you will.
06:24Yes, you did.
06:25It's okay.
06:26You'll be a good girl, all right?
06:28And I'll see you a little later.
06:30Okay?
06:31Come on, come on.
06:31You're so...
06:33It's okay.
06:33It's okay.
06:36I love you.
06:38No, sweetheart.
06:39It's good, all right?
06:39All right.
06:52On behalf of my mother and my siblings, I'd like to welcome you all here today.
07:14Both those who are physically with us, those who are with us in spirit, and those who are
07:22with us virtually.
07:23We're here to honor an incredible life and legacy of John Black.
07:41Please join me in a short prayer.
07:52Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual life shine upon him.
07:59May the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.
08:08Amen.
08:08Amen.
08:15This is sometimes called a home-going service.
08:21And I think it is.
08:24John is going to his eternal home, welcomed by Sean and Caroline, and all those who loved him.
08:33Evan is truly rejoicing at the return of one of its favorite sons.
08:40John is truly rejoicing at the return of one of its favorite sons.
09:10May Almighty God bless you who have gathered here today.
09:31In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
09:39Amen.
09:40Amen.
09:47And now from the book of Ruth, a passage about courage and devotion, love, all of which Sean
10:04have had an abundance.
10:05Wherever you go, I will go.
10:11Wherever you lodge, I will lodge.
10:13Wherever you lodge, I will lodge.
10:19Your people shall be my people.
10:26Your God, my God.
10:28Wherever you die, I will die.
10:30And there I will be buried.
10:34Wherever you die, I will die.
10:41And there I will be buried.
10:43May the Lord do thus and so to me, and more as well, if anything but death separates me from you.
10:55And here I thought we were coming out to get some fresh air.
11:38But how?
11:39Hmm?
11:40You're still recovering.
11:41How, um, had you managed to pull all this off?
11:47With the little help of a couple of angels by the name of Sierra and Chelsea.
11:54Still the same romantic you always were.
11:58I just wish that...
12:03What is it?
12:08This was supposed to be a happy surprise.
12:13It is.
12:14It is.
12:15But there's something going on.
12:20What's wrong?
12:23Nothing.
12:25Let's enjoy, let's enjoy the picnic.
12:27John.
12:28No, no.
12:29Not until you tell me what's going on.
12:31Who?
12:32It's about John.
12:34Like, is he in some kind of trouble?
12:35He's gone.
12:36John is gone.
12:37John is gone.
12:38Gone where?
12:39No, man.
12:40No, man.
12:41No, man.
12:42No, man.
12:43No, man.
12:44Some kind of trouble?
12:50He's gone.
12:55John is gone.
12:57Gone where?
13:06No.
13:09No.
13:14Amazing grace, how sweet the sound that saved a wretch.
13:41Like me.
13:45I once was lost, but now I'm found.
13:47Was blind, but now I see.
13:52I once was lost, but now I'm found.
14:02Was blind, but now I see.
14:12I was blind, but now I see.
14:26I see.
14:28I see.
14:31I see.
14:32I see.
14:34I see.
14:35I see.
14:36I see.
14:37I see.
14:38I see.
14:39I see.
14:40I see.
14:41I see.
14:42I see.
14:43I see.
14:44I see.
14:45I see.
14:46I see.
14:47I see.
14:48I see.
14:49I see.
14:50I see.
14:52You.
14:54I see.
14:55I see.
14:56Steve, Shane and I represent, each of us represent a phase of John's professional life.
15:15I worked with him at the Salem Police Department.
15:20And Shane, Shane was his boss at the ISA, Steve.
15:35Steve was his partner at Black Patch Detective Agency.
15:40I don't know whether John was a cop, a spy, or a private investigator.
15:52He always, always fought for justice.
16:06And, uh, will you have to admit, he was risking his own life.
16:14You'll notice these many commendations that John received over the years.
16:27But they, uh, they barely scratched the surface of the extraordinary work he's done.
16:38That's right.
16:39John served on so many missions, countless missions.
16:48But the one that was most important to him was protecting his family and friends.
16:58That's why it's so fitting
17:04that his final act of courage was to save the life of a man he considered a brother.
17:19Loyalty.
17:22Loyalty was a big part of John's character.
17:27You know, I left the Salem Police Department a long time ago.
17:35But John, John always called me partner.
17:43If you were in John's circle,
17:48never left.
17:51And that's, that's how we will remember him.
18:02A loyal friend.
18:05And a true hero.
18:10We're all so much better off for having known him.
18:13And the world is a safer place because of him.
18:19And the world is a safer place because of him.
18:19So, if you are wondering, why do you feel you didn't feel a man?
18:24Why don't you feel soooo little and leveled?
18:27Ashton, John said,
18:31You know, he must be here.
18:31Why don't you feel so alone?
18:33Because of you will.
18:42The world is acapella.
18:44John is dead because of me.
18:54Nothing was going to stop him from helping Steve and Sean get that drug.
18:58Well, he had to know going into that lab was dangerous.
19:01So he risked his life to save me.
19:05You all did.
19:06Because we love you.
19:09We love you so much, Brady.
19:11Why did you wait so long to tell me?
19:17I couldn't. I just... I couldn't.
19:20You'd already been hit by...
19:22You'd already been hit with so much.
19:27Marlene, I...
19:29Can't imagine what she's going through.
19:33I know.
19:35I spoke to her a few times this morning.
19:39She's so strong, Beau.
19:41Stoic.
19:43I think she's still in shock that it hasn't quite hit her yet.
19:51The funeral's today.
19:54Today?
19:57What are we doing sitting here? We gotta get going.
20:00Slow down. Hold on.
20:01I wish we could be there, but it's too soon.
20:06Brady, you need to recover.
20:08The doctor said it's gonna take...
20:09Give a damn what the doctor said.
20:11I need to be there for John.
20:13For his family.
20:15Hope, I...
20:16I gotta be there.
20:18Roman, Beau, and I...
20:33Along with our sister, Kimberly...
20:34Have not only lost a close friend...
20:38We lost a man we call our brother.
20:51As many of you know...
20:53And through no fault of this...
21:00John, for many years, he believed he was me.
21:05Roman Brady.
21:05And when I came back home to reclaim my life...
21:11I mean, it was a...
21:12It was a difficult situation...
21:15To say the least.
21:17But John...
21:21John handled that with such...
21:24Extraordinary...
21:29Grace.
21:31And looking back, I think so many times...
21:36Did I really, really tell him...
21:38That I loved him...
21:41So much for the phenomenal job that he did...
21:47Raising my children...
21:50And taking care of my family...
21:54Which...
21:56Became his family.
21:59So true.
22:02And, um...
22:04When we learned that...
22:06He was not our brother by love.
22:12He became our brother by heart.
22:16And his heart...
22:19Could have filled up with bitterness and anger.
22:23It never did.
22:27It remained open and welcoming and warm.
22:31John never hesitated to help someone in need.
22:39And like...
22:41Steve mentioned earlier...
22:45He saved our brother's life.
22:48Because of his selflessness and his bravery.
22:53Beau came out of his coma.
22:54And he came back to us.
22:58And that is just...
23:00One of the long, long list of things that...
23:04We will always be grateful...
23:08For John.
23:11I was so grateful...
23:13For his relationship with our parents.
23:16When he found out that he wasn't...
23:21That he wasn't really a Brady.
23:24He was so afraid...
23:26That he would lose that connection and that closeness to them.
23:31And when our little firecracker of a mother...
23:37When did that?
23:39She got up in his face...
23:40Looked him right in the eyes...
23:42And she said...
23:44Once you are in my heart...
23:45You never get to leave.
23:46And she let him know...
23:51That he had all the qualities...
23:54Of a son.
23:58And they...
24:00Stayed close...
24:01And they loved each other.
24:04And a testament to that love...
24:07Is that he named his firstborn son...
24:10After a family.
24:12John Black...
24:18Was one of the best men...
24:24I have ever known.
24:30And his legacy...
24:33Was in all of us...
24:36Who loved him.
24:41To be in all of us...
24:50His death was sooner he is after his death.
24:51And he was back in his...
24:52Will.
24:53Or...
24:55He was more than...
24:57He was more than anything...
24:59He was...
25:01He was more than anything...
25:03He was more than anything...
25:05But...
25:07He was more than anything...
25:09there's been a lot of talk about my dad being a hero and he was
25:21to me he was a superhero
25:25when i was a kid i always knew that my dad could keep my family and me safe from like anything
25:34and i'm sure every little girl feels that way but i never outgrew it even as an adult i always knew
25:45that i was the safest when i was with my dad
25:49i remember a time gosh it must have been 15
26:02when eric was in paris poking the hornet's nest the hornet being stephano de mira
26:09and my brother needed some help so my dad got a plane ticket out there immediately and my mom
26:17she was pretty upset because she thought you know my dad was walking straight into danger
26:26but my dad said you know i can't just sit around and do nothing right and i think my exact words were
26:36yeah mom come on daddy's the man he'll come through
26:39and he did he always came through
26:46and i'm sure you all know that my dad has had a lot of big epic moments you know where he was
26:56faster than a speeding bullet or leaping tall buildings in a single bound
27:02but you know he was also really powerful and really present in the
27:09quiet small moments where
27:14i just needed a little advice or a shoulder to cry on
27:19or if i needed a laugh because i don't think we talk enough about how funny my dad was
27:27he loved to tell jokes
27:29and some of them were pretty bad dad jokes but
27:34you know he just wanted to raise everybody's spirits and make them smile
27:39in his honor today i am going to try not to cry all day
27:47and to instead find some time to laugh
27:51because i think that's how he would want it
27:54and for the record daddy you are still the man
28:01so doc i'm good to go
28:17look i'm very sorry about your loss
28:21but i can't give you my approval to leave the hospital
28:24you said i'm fine that technically there's nothing wrong with me
28:29your body is still recovering bo
28:31she doesn't seem to understand
28:37this is one of my best friends
28:42you know i'm gonna be okay
28:44i understand how you feel i do
28:47i wish that we could be there you know it
28:50for god's sake i just got you back
28:55i can't lose you again
28:59we need to be smart about this we need to be safe
29:02you need to listen to your doctor please
29:05you
29:12you
29:14you
29:18you
29:22you
29:26you
29:28you
29:30As many of you know, I'm, uh, I'm relatively new to this family.
29:49I didn't find out John was my dad until I was an adult.
29:53Which, unfortunately, meant, well, he wasn't my first Little League coach, like he was
30:02for Eric and Carey, who I'm told he was awesome, even though he would argue with the ump once
30:11in a while.
30:18Sports can bring people together.
30:23I mean, baseball definitely did that for me and John.
30:34Ah, our love of the game, it was, uh, it gave us a way to bond.
30:42Playing catch and hitting balls at the batting cage.
30:48Those are some of the memories that I'm going to cherish most about my dad.
30:58You know, even when I, I beamed him in the eye and gave him a black eye right before his
31:04wedding, it was totally his fault.
31:07No, no.
31:09Maybe you wouldn't let me take the blame.
31:10But, uh, you know, he, he may have missed that pass, but man, he had mad skills when he
31:20was on that diamond.
31:22In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if he played pro ball in a past life.
31:27Maybe he threw a pitch or two for his favorite team.
31:32The, uh, the, uh, New York games.
31:35New York games.
31:38He was, uh, he was also a Cubs fan, too.
31:50Of course.
31:53A huge fan of Ryan Sandberg.
31:57One of the greatest second basemen of all time.
32:06Yeah, Dad, uh, Dad himself was a terrific second baseman.
32:13And of course, why wouldn't he be?
32:15He had all the qualities.
32:17Agility.
32:19Quick thinking.
32:20But most of all, he had the ability to pivot.
32:26Oh, and no one had more grace than John when he'd pivot.
32:34I mean, no matter what the world threw at him.
32:38Amnesia.
32:40Paralysis.
32:44A long lost son.
32:45He, uh, he just rolled at the punches and kept going.
32:53You know, baseball doesn't have a clock.
33:03Theoretically, a game can go on forever.
33:05But all off the field.
33:15All off the field.
33:15All off the field, sadly, time runs out.
33:17And, uh, you know, I wish I could, I wish I could have spent more time with my dad.
33:37I wish, I wish, I wish that he would be there for when Andrew and I get married.
33:47But through all the time that I was lucky enough to have with my dad.
33:58He made me feel loved.
34:07He made me feel accepted.
34:09So, every time I see a, a rainbow up high or a baseball in the sky.
34:25I'm not thinking of you, dad.
34:36I love you, dad.
34:45I love you, dad.
34:51I love you, dad.
34:55I can't wait to play another game of baseball with you again.
35:25I love you, dad.
35:41I love you, dad.
