We went out into Manchester to ask people on the street about what makes them proud to be themselves and what makes them proud to be British.

Here is what they said.

00:00Hello and welcome to Manchester World. My name is Theo Houston Betts and today I'm out in the streets of Manchester asking people about Pride.
00:05Now it's Pride Month and last Monday I went down into the Gay Village to talk to people about what their pride meant to them.
00:11And from that we realised just how much positive feeling can be generated from taking a while to really consider how great you can be.
00:18So today we're going to be asking people two things. Firstly, what makes them proud to be themselves?
00:23And secondly, what makes them proud to be British?
00:26I like to think I'm a kind person.
00:29What makes me proud to be myself?
00:34I'd say I'm pretty independent. I do a lot of things on my own.
00:39I don't know. I'm very myself.
00:43Trustworthy, loyal, good guy, kind.
00:48Yeah, it's also a bit cliche though saying like, oh, he's outgoing, he's so nice, you know.
00:53But that just is what you want people to think about you, especially close friends.
00:58I think my friends would say, I'm pretty loud, outgoing, say I'm reasonably confident.
01:07I'm generous.
01:11Yeah, I'd say that's it. I'm quite encouraging as well.
01:14Oh, jeez.
01:15That's his whole personality, just going like, just making a joke and being like, oh, I'm so funny, I can't believe I just said that.
01:21That's just you.
01:22I do laugh at my own jokes quite a lot.
01:24Yeah.
01:25Biggest fan.
01:26I am.
01:27I'm like, I'm biggest fan to be fair.
01:28Yeah, funny. I'd describe myself as funny.
01:29I don't know how funny I am.
01:31I'm a really good mum.
01:33Like, hold my hands up there.
01:35Sick mum.
01:36Got a six year old.
01:37So, yeah, that's what I'm probably proudest of, everything I do for her.
01:42And how much she really likes me as well.
01:44Like, we've got a very good relationship.
01:46You know, especially in like this city, like north of England, it's built on community and working hard, looking out for each other.
01:53And you can definitely feel that when you're like just talking to everyday normal people.
01:57And that's something I'm proud of for the country.
02:00Something I like to be a part of and do, you know, like working hard, being kind, being, you know.
02:07It's very, very friendly. Obviously, I've, well, not obviously, but been to Norway, you know, a couple of places.
02:14And people don't like talk as much, you know, like, also I work in a bar.
02:19So I'm always like quite nice, you know, nice to customers, always talking.
02:24You can always get along with people.
02:25I think if it just stops a random guy, you probably have a 500 conversation with him about nothing.
02:30I like Britain. It's a great place. It's old, a lot of history.
02:33There's a lot of roots, a lot of old buildings. The pub, football. I think it's great to be British.
02:39I like the people. Not all of the people, but, you know, most of us have the same sort of base, like you said before.
02:46We're all a bit self-deprecating. We're all miserable to the same degree.
02:50Yeah, but we're all like that and we're so nice.
02:52Yeah, so it's fine. We all just sort of get on with it.
02:54You know, keep calm and carry on. The resilience of the Brits is something to be admired, I think.
03:00Thank you, Lord.
03:19Yeah.
