00:00David Cappell, the loyal all-rounder who gave it all for cricket
00:03David Cappell, born on 6 February 1963, was a true cricketing warrior from England.
00:10He played most of his career for Northamptonshire County Cricket Club and also represented England
00:16at the international level.
00:18Many believe that he was the big all-rounder after Ian Botham, but that heavy tag followed
00:23him throughout his playing days.
00:25David Cappell was known for his deep love for the game and stayed connected to Northamptonshire
00:30for a massive 32 years as both as a player and a coach.
00:35Sadly, in 2018, he was diagnosed with a brain tumor and passed away on 2 September 2020 at
00:42the age of 57.
00:44David Cappell started his cricket journey with Northamptonshire in 1980 as an apprentice with
00:50little experience under his belt.
00:53Just a year later, he made his first-class debut against the touring Sri Lankan side.
00:58He was a batting all-rounder who bowed well but often batted lower down the order.
01:02David Cappell made his test debut for England 1987 against Pakistan at Headingley.
01:08He came to bat when the team was reeling at 31-for-5 and played a greedy knock of 53 runs.
01:14Stopped scoring in that runs.
01:16That made him the first Northamptonshire-born player in 77 years to play test cricket for England.
01:22His career best score came in Karachi when he scored 98 runs in tough condition against
01:28Pakistan in 1987-88.
01:31But after that, the runs dried up and his form dipped.
01:34His batting average stayed under 20 and his bowling average was around 50, which made it
01:40hard to keep his place in the side.
01:42While he had some proud moments like dismissing the legendary Viverchers three times and being
01:48part of the pace tag that helped England to beat the West Indies in Jamaica in 1989-90 series,
01:55England first win over them in 16 years.
01:58After hanging up his boots in 1998, David Cappell moved straight into coaching.
02:02He became the director of excellence at Northamptonshire in 1999 and later took charge of their academy.
02:09In 2006, he became the head coach of the club, replacing Kappell Vessels.
02:14He served as the head coach until 2012.
02:17But after a disappointing 2020 season, his long journey with the club came to an end that
02:22closed the 32-year-long chapter.
02:25In 2013, David Cappell joined the England women's cricket team as an assistant coach and stayed
02:30with them until 2015.
02:32Then, in 2016, he took charge as the head coach of the Bangladesh women's team.
02:38What started as a 4-1 job turned into a two-year stint and he stayed with the team until 2018.
02:44His lifelong service to Northamptonshire was honored in May 2020 when he was inducted into
02:50their Hall of Fame.
02:51In 2018, David Cappell faced the toughest battle of his life when he was diagnosed with a brain
02:57tumor.
02:58He bravely fought for two years.
03:00But sadly, on 2 September 2020, he passed away.
03:03David Cappell may not have become the next Botham, but he will always be remembered as
03:08a true fighter, a loyal cricketer, and a man who gave everything to the game.
03:14As far as David Cappell's stats, he played 15 tests, batting in 25 innings.
03:19His batting aggregate was 374 runs, averaging 15.58 with a highest score of 98, including two
03:27points.
03:28As a baller, he delivered 2,000 balls.
03:30Claimed 21 wickets at an average of 50.66 with the best figure of 3 for 88.
03:36He did not achieve any five wicket hails.
03:39In the field, he took six catches.
03:41In 23 Wanda International, David Cappell scored 327 runs at an average of 19.23, registering
03:48one half century with the top score of 15 out-out.
03:52With the ball, he delivered 1,038 balls, took 17 wickets at an average of 47.35 and posted
03:59best bowling figure of 3 for 38.
04:02He held six catches in the field.
04:04As for his first-class stats, he played 313 first-class matches.
04:08David Cappell amassed 12,202 runs at an average of 29.68, including 16 centuries and 72 fifties.
04:18With the highest innings of 175, with the ball, he delivered 33,070 balls, capturing 546 wickets
04:26at an average of 32.18, including 14 five wicket hails, best bowling figure 7 for 44, and he
04:34also held 156 catches.
04:36David Cappell featured in 345 Leicester games, scoring 7,011 runs at an average of 27.38 with
04:45428 fifties, highest score was 121.
04:49Balling-wise, he sent down 12,315 balls, took 237 wickets at an average of 32.52, including
04:58one five wicket hails, 5 for 51.
05:01Further, he also added 84 catches to his fielding tally.
