New report shows most refugees are employed below their qualification

New research shows that almost half of all refugees previously working as managers and professionals are, ten years after leaving their countries, still not working in those kinds of jobs in Australia.

00:00The first one is a language barrier.

00:05When I came to Australia, I was barely speaking English.

00:09So it affects, first of all, your confidence and ability to communicate effectively, especially

00:16during interviews or customer-facing roles.

00:19Another barrier is the lack of local experience.

00:23Even from my own experience, I had many years of professional experience in my home country.

00:30Many employers in Australia, they don't recognize that experience or prefer to hire people with

00:36local work experience.

00:40The visa status is another barrier as well.

00:43Being on a temporary visa limits the job options and makes the employers hesitant to hire you.

00:52And as well, I didn't come with any professional network.

00:55I came in Australia alone.

00:58So if you don't have any connection or referrals, it's very hard to find work opportunities.
