00:00In the Arctic, a group of workers is digging deep into a frozen cave.
00:05Suddenly, they find something trapped inside the ice,
00:07so they cut out a large block to extract it,
00:10and then a helicopter takes it to a laboratory.
00:13The scientists immediately send a fax to the excavation company,
00:17explaining that a very important archaeological discovery
00:19has been made and requesting that drilling be stopped.
00:23They also ask for a specialist to study what is inside the block of ice.
00:26Some time later, the anthropologist Stanley arrives at the laboratory.
00:31He is a doctor familiar with the Arctic
00:32because he has been studying the history and culture of the Eskimos.
00:36Stanley meets Dr. Diane and other scientists,
00:39who believe they have found some prehistoric animal.
00:42In 1898, the Russians found a mammoth with still viable cells,
00:46so they have high hopes for their discovery.
00:48Then the group uses a laser to very carefully cut the block of ice layer by layer
00:52to avoid damaging the creature.
00:54To their surprise, the being inside is not an animal, but a Neanderthal.
00:59Stanley analyzes his appearance and concludes that he is a hunter
01:02who lived about 20 to 40,000 years ago.

01:20He wants to take a closer look,
01:21but Diane explains that their goal is to cut the caveman into pieces
01:25and send them to the best research centers in the world.
01:28Later, the scientists thaw the caveman
01:30and remove his clothes and tools to begin taking tissue samples.
01:34They also perform a bypass and monitor his brain using electrodes.
01:38The tests indicate that the Neanderthal cells and organs are in perfect condition,
01:43and Diane theorizes that ancient humans had cryoprotectants,
01:46which are special cells that prevent crystallization.
01:48As the tests continue, the scientists are surprised to suddenly notice slight brain activity
01:54coming from the Neanderthal.
01:56They decide to try to revive the man.
01:58So they intubate him and apply electric shocks with a defibrillator until they detect a strong heartbeat.
02:03Once the caveman is stable, they remove the intubation and the Neanderthal begins to wake up.
02:09He is very confused by his surroundings, the noises, and the masked faces.
02:13So he immediately begins to panic.
02:16Stanley takes off his mask, and the caveman calms down upon seeing a human face,
02:21allowing the others to sedate him with an injection.
02:24Afterwards, the group discusses the future of the caveman, hoping for a Nobel.
02:28The Arctic team is trying to develop a cryoprotectant to freeze cancer patients
02:33and thaw them when humanity finds a cure.
02:36But now that they have a Neanderthal,
02:38they believe they can find a way to freeze people to achieve immortality.
02:42Stanley disapproves of the idea,
02:44pointing out that humans shouldn't live forever and that the world is overpopulated.
02:49His concerns are ignored, and the scientists agree not to tell the press for now,
02:54because they don't want the Neanderthal to become a celebrity.
02:57Then, Stanley says that the caveman should first be studied in a natural environment,
03:01which would teach them more about prehistoric times.
03:04After much pleading, he convinces the team to give him two weeks to conduct his own research.
03:09Soon a special vivarium is set up and the Neanderthal is placed inside.
03:13When he wakes up, he finds the familiar environment and begins his usual routine.
03:18He drinks berry juice to quench his thirst and chases a bird out of its nest to steal its eggs.
03:24At night, he lights a fire with stones and cooks his food.
03:27In the mornings, he washes his body under a waterfall before going out to hunt.
03:31With a spear, he builds himself.
03:33He makes a bunch of noises that attract the attention of a wild boar that tries to attack him.
03:38But the caveman dodges at the last second, and the boar gets trapped between the rocks,
03:42allowing him to kill it.
03:43Later, while fishing, he accidentally finds a hose and breaks the end, confused by the metal.
03:50After much sniffing and licking, he begins to follow the hose,
03:54pulling it out of the ground until he reaches a metal door.
03:57He shakes it until he manages to open it.
03:59So, the scientists hurry to shut a second door to keep him from getting in.
04:03The creatures in the lab begin to roar,
04:05while the scientists start making lots of noises to scare the man.
04:09Furious, the Neanderthal climbs the waterfall and finds the machine powering it.
04:14He begins to scream as he tries to break the machine and crashes into the wall.
04:18So, a scientist enters the vivarium and shoots him with a tranquilizer dart.
04:22Then, they place him on a stretcher to take him to an operating room,
04:25where they will take a bunch of samples as they had originally planned.
04:29Stanley gets scared and reminds them that his two weeks aren't over yet.
04:32But, Diane tells him to accept things as they are.
04:35At night, Stanley shows Diane a video that shows different tribes able to dance while stepping on flames.
04:40But, Diane says it's just a nerve block.
04:43Stanley points out that this only explains the lack of pain, not the lack of blisters on the skin.
04:48He then fast-forwards the video to find a scene where an indigenous man is putting needles into his friend's face.
04:54Since there is no blood, Stanley believes they are producing some chemical that protects their tissue.
04:59He theorizes that the caveman also produces his own chemical substance and convinces Diane to let him study it a bit more.
05:06Once the Neanderthal returns to the vivarium, Stanley also enters without carrying weapons or objects so as not to scare him.
05:13The cautious caveman begins to run, growling and yelling as he looks for places to hide.
05:18Stanley is scared, but still approaches him slowly until they are face-to-face.
05:22After some hesitation, the caveman jumps on Stanley and prepares to hit him with a stone, but is distracted when a scientist yells from above.
05:31Since Stanley does not try to defend himself, the Neanderthal drops the stone.
05:35Then he looks more closely at Stanley and realizes how different his body is from his own.
05:40The man puts his fingers in Stanley's mouth, pulls on his clothes, and squeezes his groin to confirm that he is not missing certain parts.
05:47Stanley screams in pain, and the Neanderthal backs away before introducing himself as Aru, which Stanley turns into Charlie.
05:56In return, Stanley teaches him to say his name and even makes Charlie laugh.
06:01Noticing the scars on his chest, Stanley asks about them, and Charlie calls them Vita while pointing upward.
06:07The shape of the scars and the gesture makes Stanley think it means bird.
06:10Charlie steals Stanley's necklace with the cross, and after biting it, they start repeating some words and making hand gestures, but Stanley cannot understand what he is trying to say.
06:21The next day, the linguist Mabel arrives, and Stanley shows her the recording of his conversation with the caveman, but she will need more to fully understand him.
06:30Then Stanley begins to spend time with Charlie and to learn many words in his language, for simple things like rock, frog, and bone.
06:37Charlie also shares his food with him. In return, Stanley teaches him easy words in English.
06:42Mabel watches everything that happens on the cameras, and is impressed by Charlie's extensive vocabulary.
06:48One night, while they are sitting by the fire, Stanley begins to sing a song.
06:52Charlie likes it, and it encourages him to keep going.
06:55While playing with the bones of his food, Charlie makes some noises to sing cheerfully.
06:59Sometime later, the scientists put Charlie back to sleep to take more samples and begin a new experiment.
07:04They place him inside a special chamber at a very low temperature.
07:09Hopefully, this will activate the cryoprotectants and make it easier for the scientists to extract them.
07:14Stanley keeps protesting, saying they are killing Charlie and that he doesn't deserve to be treated like a lab rat.
07:20Charlie's heartbeat starts to slow down, and the scientists have no choice but to take him out.
07:25Later, in the vivarium, Charlie keeps yelling angrily at Stanley, because he is not happy with all the experiments and new scars.
07:32Suddenly, he jumps and pretends to attack Stanley, hitting the ground with his spear before stabbing his own chest.
07:39He asks Stanley to help him self-terminate, but Stanley refuses to do it, and after a brief struggle, he leaves the vivarium.
07:46Later, in private, Stanley asks Diane for help.
07:49All the studies are slowly pushing Charlie away and causing him to lose contact with him.
07:53Stanley wants Diane to go to the vivarium with him, because maybe the presence of a woman will help calm him down.
07:59When they enter the vivarium, Charlie's hands are wounded, and he is using rock dust to pull the bird out of his scars on ground.
08:06Diane is very nervous, and gets scared when Charlie immediately runs toward her to see her better.
08:11After smelling her a little, he shares his food with Diane, and she eats it so as not to offend him, even though it's made of insects.
08:18Then, Charlie keeps touching her, being friendly at first, but soon trying to get a good look at her groin.
08:24Stanley immediately stops him, and the men yell at each other.
08:27So, Stanley has to use the Neanderthal word for mine to make Charlie back off.
08:31Then, Charlie brings some objects from his cave to trade them for Diane, so Stanley has to refuse.
08:37Looking at Diane puts Charlie in a bad mood, and he repeats the same words over and over again.
08:42When Mabel analyzes this, she thinks she has found Charlie's word for woman, but there's something else she doesn't quite understand.
08:50Stanley and Diane have Charlie explain the words, and he draws some images on the ground,
08:54revealing that he used to have a wife and children.
08:57He starts running around repeating those words, and Diane realizes that he is asking where his family is.
09:03The moment is interrupted when a helicopter appears over the facility.
09:07Since the ceiling is made of glass, Charlie sees it and gets scared.
09:11He starts climbing the rocks while repeating Beta, his word for bird.
09:14The scientists immediately tell the helicopter to leave, but Charlie doesn't calm down.
09:19He climbs to the top of the vivarium and keeps shouting Beta at the ceiling.
09:24Sometime later, Stanley visits an Eskimo tribe and shares the words he heard from Charlie, which the group recognizes.
09:30Stanley hurries back to the laboratory to share his discovery with Diane.
09:34Beta refers to Sedna, the legend of a great bird that acts as God's messenger and takes people to heaven or hell, depending on their behavior.
09:42He theorizes that Charlie's tribe became extinct when a magnetic pole flipped and killed all the animals in the area.
09:49Charlie probably felt it was a punishment from God and went on a dream walk.
09:53That is, he set out to find the bird and offer himself in exchange for the return of the animals.
09:58Charlie now thinks the helicopter is Sedna, so there's no way they can calm him.
10:0234 hours later, Charlie carries all his clothes, tools, and several trinkets that Stanley gave him in recent days.
10:09He also uses crushed berries as paint to decorate his skin.
10:12Charlie never stops singing, obviously anxiously awaiting the return of his God.
10:17Every time Stanley enters the vivarium, Charlie hides until he leaves, refusing to communicate.
10:23One afternoon, Charlie climbs the stairs, and after seeing Stanley so many times, he knows he must press the button.
10:30He enters the laboratory and moves carefully, making sure the scientist doesn't see him.
10:35When he reaches an empty hallway, he finds a mirror and begins growling at his own reflection,
10:40thinking the other man is challenging him.
10:42Charlie breaks the mirror with his spear.
10:45Then he hears a voice on the speakers and runs, scared down the hallway,
10:49until he reaches the room with all the animals in the laboratory.
10:52While looking at the bird, the bear growls and Charlie keeps walking.
10:55As he tries to take the next hallway, he crashes into the glass doors.
10:59He tries again quickly and the doors open automatically, allowing him to enter another room.
11:04At that moment, he gets scared when he hears a vehicle moving, so he hides behind a photocopier.
11:10However, Charlie accidentally activates it and gets scared again, so he runs.
11:14After being startled by the elevator, he enters a lab and breaks a vial of acid, which slightly burns his hand.
11:21At that moment, the scientists turn off the lights, causing Charlie to panic.
11:25He starts climbing on the furniture, but keeps slipping and breaking the equipment.
11:29A scientist hears the noise and enters while turning the lights back on.
11:34Charlie is startled again and immediately attacks, killing the man with his spear.
11:38Then Charlie starts running once more, going crazy when he suddenly hears the alarm.
11:43He goes through a random door and finds a tunnel that gets colder the farther he goes.
11:47When he finds the emergency exit, he quickly goes through it and finally manages to get outside.
11:53He sees the helicopter and runs after it, so the pilot hits him with the skis to knock him unconscious.
11:58The scientists finally show up and rescue Charlie, bringing him back inside.
12:03Moments later, they look at the x-rays that confirm Charlie has no broken bones or head injuries.
12:08The scientists are furious with Stanley and blame his research for their colleague's death.
12:13They announce that the experiments are over and that Charlie will be transferred to another facility.
12:18Stanley tries to explain that Charlie will die if they keep him in a cage, but his concerns are ignored.
12:23Refusing to give up, he makes a secret deal with the guy guarding the door.
12:27Soon, Stanley enters the vivarium with a bunch of furs.
12:31Once Charlie is properly protected from the cold, Stanley takes him out for a walk.
12:35The scientists realize they're missing and go out to look for them, following their tracks in the snow.
12:40As the duo continues forward, the ice platforms start to collapse and suddenly a crack opens in the ground, separating Stanley from Charlie.
12:48When the helicopter finally finds them, Charlie gets excited and yells,
12:52Beta, before jumping.
12:54He manages to grab onto the helicopter's skis and sings happily during the flight.
12:59One of the pilots tries to reach for him.
13:01So Charlie lets go of the skis and falls, gliding for a few kilometers in fairly good spirits before meeting his end.
13:07And so this great movie comes to an end.
