Lean not necessarily mean, says medical expert

Dr. Cyrus Pasamba, Novo Nordisk’s senior medical manager for Clinical, Medical, Regulatory, and Pharmacovigilance, says on June 10, 202 that ‘thin outside, fat inside’ or TOFI' may refer to someone who 'may appear lean' but whose body scan could reveal 'high levels of visceral fat, which is more strongly associated with complications such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and fatty liver.' Pasamba cites a 2022 South and Southeast Asian Consensus Guidelines where the threshold for obesity in Asian populations is lower. A BMI of 25, which is considered overweight globally, is already classified as obese for Asians. This is due to differences in fat distribution, with Asians more prone to accumulating visceral fat — the dangerous fat that surrounds internal organs.

00:00What exactly are we referring to? So, as you can see here, this is a section of the body.
00:08As you can see, there are actually two spaces where your fat can accumulate.
00:12We have what we call your succutaneous fat. So, basically, those are our love handles.
00:16And then, of course, there is one that is much deeper. It's more enclosed within the body.
00:25This is the one that wraps around your internal organs, and that's what we call our gestural fat.
00:30Now, the reason why I'm differentiating this is because I'd like to show you this one.
00:35There is a concept within age that's called thin outside but fat inside, meaning to say we may appear thin, but in reality, we are fat.
00:47So, if you look at the picture here, these are actually two physicians in a conventional.
00:52The one on the right-hand side appears much smaller, thinner, and you would think that he's a healthier individual as compared to the one on the left-hand side of the screen, which is apparently a much larger, taller volcano.
01:09But in reality, they have the same BMI of 22.3. So, relatively, they are similarly weighted.
01:16But what is surprising here is that when they did a scan to determine the amount of body fat between these two individuals, what was surprising was that the South Asian man here actually has a higher body fat of around 21.2% as compared to the Western counterpart, who only has a body fat of around 9.1%.
01:36So, this is when they actually discovered that for Asians, we actually have a tendency to deposit visceral fat first before subcuting this fat.
02:06So, this is when they discovered that they were able to purchase the same as the upper-hand side of the screen.
02:09So, I'm going to take them to read and review.
02:13This is when the national market is not worshipped, but with the American market, which is something that's starting to disagree with them.
02:16So, when this is when the Japanese market is moving out to the same market as the same market, the same market as general, as a market as a market as one market.
02:20So, this is when the Japanese market is the same market to the same market.
02:22So, this is why they need to get the same market to the same market for consumers.
02:25So, this is one of the gefis and the feds and the same market.
02:30So, I really think that their new인이 is going to be fine.
