00:00Hi, I'm Amanda.
00:01Before I tell you my crazy story, please like and subscribe.
00:05I was five when I realized my parents were famous for all the wrong reasons.
00:10They were rich lawyers who were known for defending the bad guys.
00:14People in the neighborhood hated us and would leave horrible notes, throw stink bombs or
00:18trash in our driveway almost every day.
00:21Eww, someone put cat poop on the doorstep.
00:25Just wipe it off, Amanda, and don't disturb us.
00:27We're in the middle of something important.
00:29You're playing with toys, Mom.
00:31Ugh, I feel sick.
00:33These are not toys.
00:35That's a limited-edition Batmobile.
00:37Yeah, that's another thing.
00:39Mom and Dad were obsessed with collecting action figures and were oddly secretive about it.
00:45They even had a secret room where they kept their toy collection and no one was allowed
00:49to enter it.
00:50And I was not allowed to tell anyone about their crazy hobby, which I couldn't even if
00:55I wanted to because no one at school talked to me.
00:58Every time my parents would win a case, kids would drive me crazy with sly comments.
01:03Who knew people could stoop so low for money?
01:06My dad always said they were creepy.
01:09Oh, yeah?
01:10Did he also tell you that your breath smells like poop?
01:12No?
01:13Well, then he isn't as honest as you think.
01:15Because you stink!
01:16I hated it, but I wasn't gonna let them tear me down.
01:20So I put all my focus into perfecting my art.
01:22By 11th grade, I could draw portraits in under two minutes.
01:26When I won the junior art competition, I begged Mom to take me to a fancy dessert place.
01:31But five minutes into it, she started getting jittery.
01:34Oh my God, I gave birth to a sloth.
01:36Could you please hurry up?
01:38Geez, Mom, what's the rush?
01:40I'll get brain freeze.
01:42There's an auction online for a rare Iron Man figure that I can't miss, so eat faster.
01:47I tried, but Mom kept glancing at the phone, and it made me anxious.
01:52After a while, she told me to take the bus and just left.
01:56At least I could eat in peace now.
01:58Just as I was leaving, I saw a girl my age staring at the food displayed in the shop.
02:03Hey there, do you want something?
02:04I can...
02:05Leave me alone!
02:06I don't need your charity!
02:07The girl pushed me, and I fell flat on my butt.
02:10Worst celebration ever!
02:12The next day in class, the teacher walked in with someone.
02:15It was the girl from the dessert shop.
02:17Her name was Sophie, and she was wearing the same clothes as yesterday.
02:21She sat next to me, but didn't say a word.
02:23She smelled like a blown-out match.
02:26But later in the cafeteria, she walked up to me with a stern face.
02:30Why are you staring at me?
02:31And what's that you're making?
02:33Oh my God, is that me?
02:35Um, yeah.
02:37I just like the background and the light, so no one has ever sketched me before.
02:41You're really good.
02:42Can I keep it?
02:43Of course.
02:44Sophie and I got talking, and it turns out, she was actually really sweet.
02:48She told me her dad worked abroad, and she lived with her aunt here.
02:51I miss him.
02:52But it's not all bad.
02:54Well, I live with my parents, and trust me, you're not missing out on anything.
02:58We started hanging out, and I was glad to have finally made a friend.
03:01One time in class, I'd just gone out to grab something, when I saw Sophie going through
03:06my art journal.
03:07Hey, no one's allowed to see that.
03:09You have a whole comic book planned out?
03:11You'll get this published, right?
03:12No, it's just random scribbling.
03:15Well, your call.
03:16But I think the world needs to know how talented you are.
03:19Sophie's words encouraged me, and I took a week to make some edits before finally submitting
03:24it to a big comic publisher.
03:25I waited a month, but I got no response.
03:28It was a long shot anyway.
03:30But then one day, when I got to school, everyone crowded around me like I was a celebrity.
03:35Amanda, you did it!
03:37Your comic became a hit overnight!
03:39They published it!
03:41You've got to be kidding me!
03:42Apparently, the publishers loved my comic, and they wanted to sign a contract with me
03:47for two million dollars!
03:49When I told my parents, they thought I was joking, till they actually saw the contract.
03:54I didn't know you could draw like that, Amanda.
03:56You would notice if you weren't so busy playing with your toys.
03:59After that, my parents started giving me a lot more attention.
04:03They got me a new sketching set and would spend hours discussing ideas, which were mostly useless.
04:09You should make your own superhero, who can make frogs rain from the sky.
04:14Imagine having an action figure like that.
04:17How cool would that be?
04:18Uh, yeah.
04:20No thanks.
04:21I'll figure out something.
04:22But in reality, I was struggling to come up with ideas.
04:26With the publishers on my back asking for a new manuscript, the pressure was building.
04:31One day, I invited Sophie over to help me out.
04:33We brainstormed for hours, but my mind was just blank.
04:38I'm tired and starving.
04:40Stay here.
04:41I'll bring some snacks.
04:42I rushed downstairs, but when I came back, Sophie wasn't around.
04:46I kept searching for her till I saw her in Mom and Dad's secret room.
04:51Whoa, I didn't know you liked superheroes this much.
04:55Uh, yeah.
04:56It's for inspiration.
04:58Come on, let's watch some MSA.
04:59Maybe that'll help with ideas.
05:01But just as we turned, Sophie's arm hit one of the figures and it crashed loudly.
05:06Within seconds, I could hear Mom screaming as she came running.
05:09What did you do?
05:11Do you know what that's worth?
05:13I'm sorry, ma'am.
05:14I didn't do it into-
05:15You're sorry?
05:17Who's going to pay for this?
05:18Your dad?
05:19Sophie turned red before bursting into tears, and then she left.
05:23You can't scream like that at my friend, Mom!
05:26Your friend?
05:27Just ruin something precious.
05:29That's it.
05:29No more bringing friends over.
05:31She's literally the only person who talks to me.
05:35God, all this over a dumb toy?
05:37You guys are the worst!
05:39I stormed off to my room and called Sophie to apologize, but she didn't answer.
05:44And when she didn't turn up for school the next day, I pulled a few strings and got her
05:47home address.
05:48And I was stunned to see that she lived in a mansion.
05:52Why did she act poor then?
05:54Amanda, what are you doing here?
05:56I just wanted to check up on you.
05:58I didn't know you were so rich.
06:00I'm not.
06:01My aunt is.
06:02Listen, I am so sorry about Mom.
06:04My parents get crazy about those action figures.
06:08Seriously, they love them more than they love me.
06:11Don't ask me why.
06:12Wait, those aren't yours?
06:14Your parents collect those toys like kids?
06:17Are they crazy?
06:18Sophie suddenly burst out laughing, and I felt a bit angry.
06:22I know it's weird, but they're not crazy.
06:25I just came here to apologize.
06:27I'll leave.
06:29I'm sorry.
06:29I didn't mean it like that.
06:30But look at the bright side.
06:32This is the perfect comic book material.
06:35I'm sure it wasn't easy growing up with them.
06:37So why don't you write about that?
06:39I have to agree.
06:41My life is kind of like a roller coaster.
06:43So use it.
06:44Also, do you think we can move past this whole thing?
06:48In a heartbeat.
06:49I started working on the new comic based on my childhood.
06:52I changed the names and made a few things different, just so no one would know it was a true story.
06:56And when I gave it to the publishers after a month, they loved it and wanted to release it immediately.
07:02I was super happy.
07:04But then a week later, I came home to find my parents with my manuscript.
07:08How did you get that?
07:09We have connections.
07:10What were you thinking, dragging your parents through the dirt like this?
07:14You can't write anything without running it by us.
07:16Surely we told you that.
07:18One, no you didn't.
07:19And two, that's ridiculous.
07:21Please give that back to me.
07:22Uh-uh, you're talking all about your childhood with your weird parents obsessed with their toys.
07:28You can't publish this, do you understand?
07:30No, I don't.
07:32And also, I don't understand why you'd neglect your own child for dumb toys.
07:37And why you won't stop fighting for criminals.
07:40Because they pay the big bucks, okay?
07:42And we can feed you, afford your expensive school, and art supplies.
07:46I don't care about your money.
07:48I can make my own.
07:49Now please, give me back my drawings.
07:51But they simply turned around and left with the manuscript.
07:55I spent days searching for it everywhere, except the secret room.
07:59After Sophie broke one of their pieces, they'd changed the locks.
08:03I was still thinking about how to get in there.
08:05When the next day at school, Sophie came running, panicked.
08:09OMG, Amanda, you've got to see this.
08:11She showed me the news about a gang the police were after,
08:14who smuggled illegal substances worth millions in action figures.
08:19I was speechless.
08:20Do you think your parents could be involved?
08:23I... I don't know.
08:25I know they're weird, but I don't think they're criminals.
08:27But they're always so jumpy and secretive about the action figures.
08:31Of course they're hiding something.
08:32We have to tell the police.
08:34Just slow down, will you?
08:36I need to think about this.
08:37I couldn't just call the cops on my parents.
08:40I decided to talk to them about it.
08:41But later, when I walked into the room, I saw Mom shredding a bunch of papers that looked like my drawings.
08:48Oh my God, what have you done?
08:50It took me months to make that.
08:52Amanda, listen.
08:53No, Mom.
08:54You'll listen to me.
08:55I'm done, okay?
08:57You will pay for this.
08:58I was so mad that I decided to do exactly what Sophie said.
09:03Punish my parents.
09:04I went to the police station to tell them about the action figures, but chickened out the last minute.
09:09But an hour later, the police showed up at our doorstep with Sophie.
09:13Sophie?
09:14What are you doing?
09:15Your parents are liars and crooks, and people need to know that.
09:19Isn't that what you wanted, too?
09:20Amanda, how could you think we're criminals?
09:23Let us be the judge of that.
09:24Let's start with this one.
09:26Please, don't destroy our babies.
09:28These are not illegal.
09:29You can see the receipts.
09:31Mom and Dad kept pleading, but the officers cracked open all the action figures, and they didn't find anything.
09:37Are you happy now?
09:38All our figures are destroyed because our own daughter doesn't trust us.
09:42How can I?
09:43You're always so weird about a bunch of toys.
09:46So much that you forgot you had a real daughter who needed you.
09:50That's not true.
09:51And for the last time, these are not just toys.
09:54They were the rarest, limited edition collectibles worth a fortune.
09:58We didn't want someone to rob us or even ruin them out of spite.
10:02There are plenty of people who hate us.
10:04That's why we always told you to keep it a secret.
10:07Shut up.
10:08How is this possible?
10:09You're guilty.
10:10I just know it.
10:11I won't let you guys get away with it this time.
10:14What do you mean this time?
10:15Your evil parents put my innocent dad in jail and got the real culprit off.
10:20And I have to live with my awful aunt who makes me do house chores all day long so I can study in a good school.
10:27Wait.
10:27Is that why you became my friend?
10:29Because you wanted to get back at my parents somehow?
10:32Well, yes.
10:33But then I saw how different you were from your family and...
10:36That doesn't matter.
10:38You still lied to me.
10:39And Mom, Dad, is it true?
10:42Did you really put her dad in jail?
10:44We don't know who her dad is.
10:46We fight so many cases and putting people in jail is what we do.
10:49You guys are heartless.
10:51Maybe you're not criminals, but you have committed some pretty big blunders.
10:55You've ignored me all my life and never cared about how your jobs or hobbies affected me.
11:00You've even destroyed my comic that I worked so hard on.
11:04Your comic is in my office.
11:06What you saw that day was some useless drawings I found in my drawer.
11:09I tried to tell you, but you were so melodramatic, like always.
11:13I'll give you that dumb thing back.
11:15That doesn't make anything right.
11:17And you know what?
11:18I'm done with you.
11:19All of you.
11:20Amanda, I...
11:21Don't bother explaining.
11:23After that day, I ignored Sophie and stopped talking to my parents.
11:27Maybe they started feeling a bit bad because they tried making amends by helping get Sophie's
11:32dad out of jail.
11:33I was happy for her, but I wasn't ready to forgive my parents yet.
11:37Sophie left town soon after, and I didn't hear from her again.
11:40I got my manuscript published in a month, and it was even better received than the first
11:44one.
11:45The money I earned was enough to put me through a good art school, and I left home.
11:49For good.
11:50Soon, I got busy with studies and writing a new comic, and a whole year went by.
11:55One day, I was at a comic book store when someone tapped on my shoulder.
11:59Sophie, it really is you.
12:01Oh, I'm so happy to see you, Amanda.
12:04Sophie, you look so different.
12:06What are you doing here?
12:07I work here now.
12:08We moved to this town after dad got out, and we're doing well for ourselves.
12:13Listen, Amanda, I wanted to call you a long time ago, but I didn't know if you'd talk
12:18to me.
12:19What I did was wrong.
12:20I was angry and foolish, and you didn't deserve that.
12:24Dang right I didn't.
12:25But who could blame you, honestly?
12:27My parents destroyed your family, so I get why you were so angry.
12:32Does that mean you're not mad at me?
12:34Maybe a little, but not as much.
12:36Let's talk more over coffee?
12:38Sounds good to me.
