00:00Hey there! My story is a little different from the stories you might have seen on MSA.
00:05Wanna know why?
00:06Cause it has a ghost in it.
00:08I'm Beatrix.
00:10And unlike other kids who are born crying, I was born smiling.
00:15Yep! And that sort of freaked out my mom and the doctors.
00:20Come on, little angel, it's time to cry.
00:22But instead, I cooed and laughed.
00:25Mom had so much fun playing with me and making me beatbox.
00:30That's the reason she named me Beatrix.
00:33Needless to say, growing up, I had a great life.
00:37And my parents absolutely adored me.
00:40They made me feel like I was the center of their universe.
00:44Especially Dad.
00:45We were like two birds of a feather.
00:47He was an amazing singer and owned a studio.
00:50He often took me there and I was always in awe of the place.
00:55Daddy, can I be a singer too when I grow up?
00:58You already are, kiddo.
01:00In fact, you're so good, you even make crying sound like a melody.
01:04I always thought that nothing would ever break us apart and our family would stay together forever.
01:10I was so wrong.
01:13One day, Dad told Mom he had taken on some debt and was unable to pay it back.
01:17From that day on, they started fighting over the smallest of things and soon ended up getting divorced.
01:24Dad left the city and never looked back.
01:26I was heartbroken and hoped he'd come back for me, but he didn't come.
01:31Even on my birthday, I felt shattered.
01:34Mommy, why didn't Daddy come?
01:37He promised he'd come for my birthday.
01:39Please call him.
01:40I did, sweetheart.
01:41He must be busy.
01:43You have me.
01:44Come on, let's cut the cake.
01:45No!
01:46I want Daddy!
01:47Or else, I don't want this cake at all!
01:50After that day, I was asking Mom for Dad all the time, but he changed his number.
01:56And then to make things even worse, she married again.
01:59I was nervous at first when I met my stepdad, but it turned out he was an absolute gem.
02:06Not only did he paint my room in the exact color I wanted, but he also treated me to ice cream every day and spoiled me with all the things I asked for.
02:17Every night when Mom used to tuck me in bed and sing me a lullaby, he'd come too.
02:22Life was finally good again.
02:25And then my half-sister Jennifer was born.
02:28Mom and my stepdad only had eyes for her, and it seemed like it was all Jennifer, all the time.
02:35I started to get jealous of her, but one time when she was crying and Mom and my stepdad weren't around, she gave me the most beautiful smile ever.
02:44And I melted.
02:46Aw, aren't you the cutest thing in the world?
02:49I tried to lift her, but Jennifer ended up crying again.
02:53And right then, my stepdad stomped into the room.
02:57He looked really pissed.
02:59I just put her to sleep.
03:01Did you wake her up?
03:02Did you make her cry?
03:03What?
03:04No, no, I was just...
03:06Don't yell at her.
03:07She's just a kid.
03:08Then they started fighting over me, all the time.
03:12When my stepdad said I was always causing trouble and should be sent away to live with my real dad, I felt like someone punched me in the gut.
03:21That's when I felt like I wasn't a part of my own family.
03:24But I kept quiet and didn't complain.
03:26And since no one even knew where my real dad was, I wasn't sent away.
03:31But then I noticed something strange was happening.
03:34I couldn't go outside anymore.
03:37Mom even had to homeschool me for a month.
03:40Thankfully, I grew out of it eventually with Mom's help.
03:43And as Jennifer grew up, she loved being around me.
03:46We were pretty close, even though she was competitive and wanted Mom's attention all the time.
03:52Like, when I'd come home from school and run to hug Mom, she'd jump in and hug her first.
03:57Then talk to her and keep her busy until I gave up and would go to my room.
04:01I didn't mind, because she was still very small.
04:05But one day, she broke Dad's phone by accident when we were playing with it.
04:09Beatrix, please don't let them know it was me.
04:12It was an accident.
04:13Please, please, please.
04:15I don't want them to be mad at me.
04:17I couldn't see my baby sister that way.
04:19So when Mom entered the room and saw Jennifer crying, she assumed I had done something.
04:25Um, Mom, we were playing, and I accidentally broke Dad's phone.
04:30Why can't you be more careful, Beatrix?
04:32Why are you two in his office anyway?
04:34Don't you know how angry—
04:36At that exact moment, Dad rushed in and turned as red as a firetruck.
04:42He began yelling at me and Mom.
04:44Look at what your daughter did!
04:46I told you she's only trouble!
04:48Your daughter?
04:49Oh, wow, that hurt.
04:51After that fight, I began distancing and avoiding my stepdad every time I saw him.
04:57Since at home I had so many problems, school was a relief.
05:01There I was part of the music club, and singing always felt like a joy.
05:05One time, when I was in 12th grade, I was performing in a school play, and the lead had
05:10to sing a lullaby but forgot the words.
05:13I didn't know them either, but I jumped up and sang the same lullaby Mom used to sing
05:18me when I was little.
05:19When I was done, there was silence.
05:22Oh, shoot, I must have sounded bad.
05:24But then, all of a sudden, there was a thunder of applause, and I was stunned.
05:29Oh my god, Beatrix, you sounded so amazing!
05:33Oh, stop, you're just being nice.
05:36Wait, who are you?
05:37I'm an ad producer, and I'd like to work with you.
05:40But, before I could even finish my sentence, the man handed me his card.
05:45I called him a couple of days later, and then I found out he wanted me to sing a jingle
05:50for a Christmas ad.
05:51It was so much fun.
05:54When I got paid, I went to Mom and told her I wanted to take her out for dinner, but she
05:58seemed so occupied.
06:01That's very nice, honey.
06:02But I have to go out with your sister tonight.
06:04She got 15th position in her class, in the exams.
06:08Oh, wonderful.
06:10Okay, I'll come too.
06:11Um, well, you know how she is.
06:14She said it's a mom-daughter thing only.
06:17We'll go out some other time.
06:18I hope that's alright.
06:19Um, sure.
06:21It was pretty clear that Jennifer was more important to her than me.
06:25Mom never made the time to go out with me, even as I finished high school and moved out
06:30to my own apartment.
06:31After a few years, I started to get lots of attention for my singing, and people were
06:37totally loving it.
06:38I worked hard, and eventually I got a huge show in New York.
06:43I was so psyched about it and invited Mom and Jennifer.
06:47But minutes before I was supposed to start, Mom said they couldn't come.
06:51When I got on stage and saw the crowd and the two empty seats in the front row, I suddenly
06:56got really nervous and forgot the lyrics.
06:59My brain went blank, and since I was on the stage for so long and still hadn't performed,
07:06the audience started booing me.
07:08I felt my heart sinking, and then everything went dark.
07:13When I woke up, I found myself in the hospital.
07:15That was supposed to be my big break.
07:18Everything is ruined now.
07:20It's not Beatrix.
07:22You just need to take it slow.
07:24Trust me.
07:25You'll be on the stage again soon.
07:27Everything will be okay.
07:28I wanted to believe her.
07:30But right when I was about to step out of my hospital room, I froze at the door and couldn't
07:35move.
07:36Honey, what's the matter?
07:37I don't know.
07:39I'm too scared to leave.
07:41I hurried back to the bed and refused to move.
07:44After talking to the doctor, I was diagnosed with a condition called agoraphobia.
07:50It was just like when my dad left.
07:52The stage incident triggered the condition I already had but forgot about.
07:56It meant I had trouble being in crowds and open spaces.
08:01It had been months since I left my home, and Mom was worried sick for me.
08:05She suggested I move into the house next to hers.
08:08It had been empty for years because the owners had left town.
08:12I was fine with it, as long as it was kept locked and I could stay inside.
08:17Mom and Jennifer were the only ones allowed in.
08:19My stepdad never visited.
08:22Jennifer was incredibly understanding, and we grew even closer.
08:26Mom came over every day, always spending time and taking care of me.
08:31One day, after she left and I was alone, I heard the sound of a door creaking open.
08:36I got up to check all the doors in the house and found the back door completely open.
08:42Hmm, that was weird.
08:44I remember locking it.
08:45Soon after that, weird things started happening.
08:48Like, once I noticed the stove was on, even after I was sure I had turned it off.
08:54And then my shoes went missing.
08:56What was happening?
08:57Was I going crazy on top of everything else?
09:00I told Jennifer, and she thought the unthinkable.
09:04Maybe my house was haunted.
09:06I didn't want to believe it, but I couldn't explain it.
09:09One day, Jennifer brought over a Ouija board.
09:12Why did you bring this?
09:13Well, if there is some ghost here, we need to communicate with it and ask what it wants,
09:18so we can go away.
09:20I wasn't too sold on the idea, but I thought I might as well try.
09:24Yeah, just like those stupid kids in horror movies.
09:27In just a few minutes, it turned out to be a very bad idea.
09:32I thought Jennifer was moving the pointer, but she swore it wasn't her.
09:37And it definitely wasn't me.
09:38It's spelled out, GET OUT.
09:41Ha, awesome!
09:42I was even more scared now, and I couldn't move or even leave the house.
09:47I was stuck.
09:48Things died down for a little while, but one day while I was watching TV,
09:52the volume got super loud, and the channel changed by itself.
09:58I was terrified, and ran out of the house without thinking,
10:02and immediately ran into the most beautiful delivery guy I ever saw.
10:08Are you okay, miss?
10:09I thought maybe someone was in your house.
10:11I can check if you want.
10:12I just nodded and followed him into the house, and after ten minutes,
10:17he assured me that no one was around, and nothing was wrong.
10:21I work around here a lot.
10:23If you have any problem, let me know and I'll help you, okay?
10:25I'm Easton.
10:26From then on, Easton came to visit me every once in a while.
10:30We would sit near my door and talk.
10:32I told him about my agoraphobia, and he would bring me things that I couldn't get for myself.
10:37He was so thoughtful and sweet.
10:39One day, when Easton and I were talking, Jennifer came to visit me.
10:43The three of us had a good time.
10:45Once he left, I could not stop talking about him.
10:47He's so kind and sweet.
10:50You know, we like the same pizza, and we both love the Marvel movies, and
10:54Be on Easton sitting in a tree.
10:57K-I-S-S-I-N-G
11:00No, what are you talking about?
11:02You have a crush on him.
11:03It's so obvious.
11:05Oh no, it's true.
11:07The day Mom was supposed to meet him, I invited her and Jennifer, but he called and said he
11:12had to work late.
11:14Mom seemed disappointed.
11:15I went to get them some snacks, and when I got back, I overheard Mom and Jennifer talking,
11:21and Mom was crying.
11:22I don't know how I can help her.
11:24I've never seen her this happy.
11:26But Mom, you should know about it.
11:28That Easton does not exist.
11:31She's maybe hallucinating, you know, going crazy.
11:34What in the chocolate fudge?
11:37Beatrix, honey, what do you mean he doesn't exist?
11:41Jen, you saw him.
11:42Bea, I'm sorry, but I didn't.
11:45I was pretending for your sake.
11:47There was no one there that day.
11:49If Easton wasn't real, then who was I texting a while back?
11:52That was me.
11:53I put in my number when you weren't looking.
11:55Could it be true?
11:56After everything, I thought maybe she was right.
11:59Maybe I really was losing my mind.
12:02Mom consoled me for hours until I finally calmed down.
12:06Then we made an appointment to meet the doctor the next day to see if I really was going cuckoo.
12:12Just a week later, I was trying to get ready when a diary fell out of my cupboard.
12:17I went pale when I saw what was written.
12:19Easton used to live here all those years ago?
12:23This freaked me out so much that when the doorbell rang, I screamed.
12:28I was shaking as I opened the door.
12:30But the minute I did, I went pale with fear.
12:33It was Easton standing right in front of me.
12:37Beatrix, I'm sorry for not showing up last week.
12:39Stay away from me.
12:40Why are you haunting me?
12:41What do you mean?
12:42What's going on?
12:43You're not real.
12:44You're my imagination.
12:46Or a ghost.
12:47That explains all the weird things that's been happening.
12:49The stove, the TV, the weird...
12:52What?
12:52Of course I'm real.
12:54I don't know what you mean.
12:55I began screaming and yelling for Mom.
12:58And pretty soon, she rushed to me with Jennifer and stepdad following behind her.
13:03The minute they saw my frantic state, they went pale.
13:06Especially Jennifer.
13:08Mom, I can see Easton.
13:10And I'm scared.
13:11I think he's a ghost.
13:13Honey, I can see him too.
13:15Of course you can.
13:16I'm a real human.
13:17What's going on here?
13:18I don't understand.
13:19Jennifer, we met too.
13:21What's going on?
13:22We all turned towards Jennifer.
13:24And as if on cue, she began crying and wailing.
13:28It was all about Beatrix.
13:31She's my mom too.
13:33Ever since she got that condition, she's been with you, not me.
13:37I've done things to try to make her angry at you and happy with me, but it never works.
13:43Jennifer, how could you do this to your sister?
13:46You made her think her house was haunted?
13:48It ain't my fault she's so dumb, believing there was some ghost.
13:54Stupid Beatrix.
13:55Stupid Beatrix.
13:56How dare you do all of this?
13:59All I've been is nice to you.
14:01And you, you're so ungrateful.
14:04But mom, dad, I did this all because I love you and want you to myself.
14:10Enough.
14:10I can't believe you could stoop down to this level, Jennifer.
14:14Jennifer, you're the one who has a problem.
14:15And this is all my fault.
14:17I'm sorry, Beatrix.
14:18If I had never behaved that way towards you as a child, Jennifer wouldn't have grown up hating you this way.
14:24Easton just stood there, shocked at the entire situation.
14:28After talking to him later, we continued to stay friends.
14:31Mom and dad helped me get through my agoraphobia and get better.
14:35Jennifer was sent away for therapy and treatment.
14:38With my parents' support, I was able to turn my focus back to music.
14:43It took a lot of hard work and dedication, but eventually I was able to start performing again.
14:49Mom, stepdad, and Easton were all there in the front row when I went on stage again.
14:54And when the show was over, Jennifer surprised me with flowers.
14:58She was finally better.
14:59I'm sorry for everything.
15:01You were always a great sister.
15:03I was selfish.
15:04No more ghost stuff?
15:06Never.
15:07Good.
15:08Let's go to my not-haunted house and celebrate.
