00:01Welcome back to San Francisco.
00:04Players just getting back ready after having a rapid massage
00:09and getting some instructions from the two managers.
00:14And now they, like us, await what I think could be
00:18a pretty thrilling 30 minutes of this game.
00:21The last 30 minutes, extra time.
00:23Of course, possibly a penalty shootout after that.
00:25Thomas Broline with that wonderful free kick.
00:28Look to have made a semi-final play safe for Sweden.
00:32Only for Florin Raducar to come and make it 1-1
00:37with just two minutes of the game left.
00:40Prospects now, Kevin?
00:43Well, you've got to say, not been the best 90 minutes football
00:47we've seen in this World Cup.
00:49But both goals come in from free kicks.
00:51And again, set-piece is vitally important.
00:54Coaches work on them and spend a lot of time on them.
00:56And again, proved to be a fantastic free kick for Sweden
01:00to get them ahead.
01:01And then maybe a slightly more fortunate one for Romania
01:04that Cesar has seen extra time here.
01:06Despite 90 minutes of open play, the goals have come from free kicks.
01:09Darlene battling for Sweden.
01:13Both teams, incidentally, practiced very heavily their penalties yesterday.
01:19The Swedes for half an hour here after training.
01:23And the Romanians, I gather, for an hour.
01:27Schwartz playing it in.
01:30And an easy one this time from Pruneer.
01:33How do you practice a penalty, Brian?
01:36Well, you can't get 100,000 people in here
01:39and get the climate of the quarter-final of the World Cup, can you?
01:44No.
01:45We did it once at Liverpool because I missed a penalty
01:50and we had a competition and the chap who won it,
01:53when we got one, about ten games after, didn't want to take it.
01:56So, what was the point, you know?
01:59The thing is, it's the man on the day who can stand up
02:01and stick it in the back of the net.
02:03And if he misses it, it doesn't destroy him for the rest of his career.
02:05They have a good penalty to take.
02:07That's right.
02:12Darlene.
02:20And away come Romania.
02:22And, wearing the number ten shirt, Haji,
02:26laying it inside, and the Swedes just get there in time.
02:32Patrick Anderson.
02:35Haji, obstructed, free kick.
02:40Just get the feeling, as Kevin was saying,
02:43at the end of normal time,
02:45that the pendulum looks to be swinging Romania's way.
02:48They look, suddenly, as though they've got
02:50a bit more ambition about them.
02:56The difference a goal makes.
03:02Haji will take this free kick.
03:04He's floated in.
03:05Dimitrescu's in there.
03:06Popescu.
03:07Now, what will he do?
03:08Will he whip it in?
03:09Will he float it in?
03:10Or will he just do that?
03:11Oh, he's...
03:12Oh, he's...
03:13Very cleverly.
03:14Lupescu will then...
03:15completely mess it up.
03:16And, in the end,
03:17Dimitrescu almost made it sneak in,
03:18and you can see with the look on his face.
03:19He knew he'd hit it poorly,
03:20but suddenly he realised it almost went in,
03:22and Raveli was very late getting down again.
03:23Always a good way to get a reaction, I feel,
03:25is to look at players' faces,
03:26and they really thought for one minute this has beaten him.
03:27He was, as you said,
03:28ever so late.
03:29I don't know if he was unsighted or what.
03:30But it was a last-minute job,
03:31and, again, he didn't get his body behind it, did he?
03:32So, had it slipped through his hands,
03:33it was a goal.
03:34Dimitrescu.
03:35Dimitrescu.
03:36And he realised it almost went in,
03:37and Raveli was very late getting down again.
03:42Always a good way to get a reaction, I feel,
03:45is to look at players' faces,
03:46and they really thought for one minute this has beaten him.
03:49He was, as you said, Brian,
03:50ever so late.
03:51I don't know if he was unsighted or what.
03:53But it was a last-minute job,
03:54and, again, he didn't get his body behind it, did he?
03:56So, had it slipped through his hands,
03:58it was a goal.
03:59Dimitrescu.
04:03Here come Romania.
04:05And they do what Bulgaria have done
04:08earlier on in the day.
04:09Reach a semi-final.
04:10Fingerson getting himself really caught up there.
04:16Jung.
04:17Laying it in for Schwartz.
04:23Nielsen.
04:24To Brolin.
04:29Tried to reach Darlene.
04:33Goodness, that would have taken a bit of control.
04:35He really wrapped it in Schwartz with the...
04:38Shot well wide of the Romanian goal.
04:42Okay.
04:431-1.
04:45Into the first period of extra time.
04:47Let's play Brazil up at the...
05:00Rose Bowl at Pasadena.
05:02On Wednesday.
05:07Brazilians, of course, get an extra day
05:09to rest and restore themselves.
05:12Go to Chau.
05:14Didn't reach that one.
05:16It was Hormark.
05:17I said Ericsson a bit earlier on.
05:18It's Hormark who's come on.
05:20It's a substitute for Sweden.
05:22Sheleves.
05:24Sheleves.
05:45Piotrescu playing that for Piotrescu.
05:47Now Nielsen.
05:59Broline.
06:01Little chip by him to Martin Darlene.
06:09Broline again.
06:13He might get a shot in here.
06:15Just wide. He didn't really catch it the way he wanted to catch it.
06:19And the look of agony on his face tells you that.
06:23Starting to run at players now.
06:25Which he hasn't been doing earlier on.
06:27Didn't quite catch it, as you say, Brian.
06:29Just pulled it a bit. But had it been on target...
06:31Also, the gaps are beginning to appear a little bit, aren't they?
06:35There is a little more freedom out there.
06:37Although the pace is still fairly slow.
06:45It's more an invitation for players to try things on now.
06:47Because you get the feeling there is a bit more space and time for them.
06:51Yeah, players just not getting back quite as quickly.
06:53And also, taking a little bit more of a gamble.
06:57Saw a last attack for Romania there.
06:59Two or three players actually getting in the box.
07:01Which is something we didn't see much in the first 90 minutes.
07:03They know they're just one chance away, one goal away from...
07:07The prize draw, semi-final place in the World Cup against Brazil.
07:11And, you know, that's got to be worth dying for, really.
07:17Up goes Darlene. What is a chance here?
07:19It just wouldn't fall for him.
07:23Oh, I think he should have hit it, Brian.
07:25He was waiting for it to come down and trying to make certain.
07:27And you don't get that sort of time.
07:29I mean, the Romanian defenders, they're very quick.
07:31And he got half a yard, and then he gave it back away again.
07:35Adji, what a delicate little touch.
07:37What a clever little touch as well.
07:39Chelemesh.
07:43Adji.
07:49About two or three options that were open to him.
07:51Play the short ball to Dumitrescu.
07:53Lupescu now.
07:55Petrescu.
07:59Andura.
08:01And with the fresh legs, playing it in.
08:03Oh, my goodness me.
08:05The four mark, who...
08:07Ingersson...
08:09Very nearly scored the most remarkable own goal.
08:13Instead it's Schwartz coming forward for Sweden.
08:19Ingersson.
08:21Mill.
08:23Proline.
08:25Proline.
08:31Darlene, Proline's made a little dart into the box.
08:35Still in Proline, he might get a shot in himself here.
08:37But no, he was very well shadowed.
08:39But not one, two, but three Romanian defenders.
08:41Nilsson playing it in again.
08:43Ingersson on the far side.
08:45Kenneth Anderson couldn't quite get on the end of it.
08:47And I think a Romanian head may just have touched it.
08:49Popescu was right in the midst of it all.
08:51But maybe one...
08:53Oh, the flag was up for an offside.
08:55I'm surprised that the Swedes haven't thrown more high balls into the box.
08:59They have got tremendous height advantage with Anderson, who we know is good in the air.
09:05And Ingersson was coming in there at the far post.
09:07He must be six foot one, six foot two.
09:09Ingersson six foot three, and Anderson six foot four.
09:13But, you know, it's amazed me.
09:15They haven't thrown more, more, more, just hopeful balls in.
09:17Just to see what the Romanians are like.
09:29Prescue playing it here.
09:31For Prodown.
09:33Bella Di Dicci.
09:35Just wonder if those penalty practices might be put to good purpose.
09:57Seems to be suddenly a lack of ambition again now.
10:01For Prodown.
10:05For Prodown.
10:09Hallmark forward towards Radachoy.
10:11But he was tugging away at Hallmark's shirt.
10:15Shirt.
10:17Hallmark.
10:21Anderson.
10:23Anderson.
10:29Anderson, the hallmark, doing just what Romania were doing.
10:36I was hoping that the extra time period, Kevin, would be just as it was for the last ten minutes, quarter of an hour of normal time.
10:44It hasn't quite worked out that way at the moment. At any rate, Matrescu is fouled. It's a free kick to Romania.
10:50The sort of fear factor comes in again sometimes. It seems like teams get scared of losing.
10:56Or a fear of losing instead of wanting to win. And I think both sides are caught in that now.
11:02And they're probably waiting for a free kick or a corner because that's really where the most dangers come from in this game.
11:08From set pieces.
11:10Haji, waiting in there now for Dupitrescu and he wanted too long.
11:14It's another goal for Angel!
11:19There was a terrible mistake in the Swedish defence and they were made to pay in full for it.
11:24That's his second goal of the game. And who knows, it could be the one that puts Romania on their way to the semi-final.
11:32Had his little free kick. Dupitrescu. And it was just touched on there by Patrick Anderson.
11:39And that gave Ravelli no chance, Kevin.
11:42Yeah, I think it was Nielsen who got this touch, isn't it? Is it Nielsen?
11:45No, it's Anderson.
11:47What a great finish. I mean, he's got time. It was a little fortunate the way it came to him.
11:52But once it got there, the finish was clinical, wasn't it?
11:55Aji, knocking it forward. Here it come Romania again.
12:05Dimitrescu.
12:07Rolled over.
12:10Free kick. And a yellow card.
12:13And a red card. Schwartz goes off.
12:16That was his second yellow card. And Sweden are down to ten men.
12:23Stefan Schwartz.
12:27And really, it's all gone wrong for Sweden.
12:30Schwartz, who joins Arsenal at the start of this next season, leaves Sweden with ten men.
12:38And a 2-1 deficit.
12:48Here we are again.
12:50As he clentered in to Dupitrescu.
12:53The ball had long since gone, in fairness, Kevin.
12:56He didn't argue. I said to him in the second half there,
13:00watch players' reactions. He knew he had to go.
13:03It was just a professional foul.
13:07And they're the sort of things that they want to clamp down on.
13:10And I think he deservedly is off the pitch.
13:13It's another twist. Are we going to see ten men come back against eleven?
13:17Well, ten men have done well in every game so far.
13:24They've scored more. Seven goals, I think it is.
13:27And conceded only six when teams have been down to ten men.
13:31There's Hadji over this.
13:33I would imagine he'll take a little ball back from Dupitrescu
13:35and then lash something.
13:37No, he's going to do it straight up.
13:39But it's just gone wide.
13:45Smiles returning for the faces of Romanian players.
13:49But haunted just a few minutes before the end of normal time.
13:53He's guilty of bending that ball too much, Brian.
13:56Which is never a bad fault for me.
13:58Really did get some wick on it, didn't he?
14:00This isn't over yet by a long way.
14:02The Swedes, if nothing else, remember, are terrific scrappers.
14:06And as their manager, I was saying to you earlier on,
14:09Tommy Svensson said, we're on the verge of the semi-final
14:12because we've always refused to give in.
14:14Well, it's that sort of spirit that they've got to carry
14:17into the last stages of this quarter-final here now.
14:21Lining up a free kick.
14:25It looks like Kenneth Anderson, again,
14:27is going to take a big, long run-up.
14:28He has got a tremendous dig on him,
14:29but his two efforts so far,
14:31one in this game and one against Saudi,
14:33have not been good.
14:34Can he get it third time lucky?
14:36There he is, Kenneth Anderson.
14:38It's driven, and it's gone wide,
14:40but it deflected off a Romanian,
14:42so it's a corner for Sweden.
14:44Pre-kick.
14:45Broline will take it for Sweden.
14:46Knotted down by Haji.
15:01Nutted down by Haji.
15:09Another free kick, this time to Sweden.
15:12Rolene thought about taking it quickly.
15:18Anderson's coming across, he's going to have another dig at it.
15:22Yeah, this is the way they like to have free kicks now.
15:25Left foot, it's Jung.
15:27Who's going to have a go at this one?
15:29Coming towards the keeper, very difficult to defend if you get the right action on the ball.
15:34Keepers coming for it, used his fist well there.
15:36Got a bit of ground as well on it.
15:39Mandura.
15:42A substitute.
15:51Bela Di Dicci.
15:54Bela Di Di Cio, no foul.
16:05Here's Roland Nielsen.
16:08At the end of the first 15 minutes of extra time, up goes Kenny Anderson plays it in for Darlene.
16:17Goal kick.
16:30Not that you're a betting man, but where would it be now?
16:33Well, every time, I was just saying there before they scored that you could only see the goal coming from a set piece and then they went and scored.
16:41So, having got an almost 100% wrong record so far in the predictions, I'm going to obviously go for Romania and try and go for a banker.
16:51To be fair, they've actually, since they've scored, have been pushing out looking for goal number three, haven't they?
16:57Well, that's, I think, you know, that's the best way to defend is to attack. You know, the third goal kills Sweden.
17:02While it's at 2-1, there's always a chance of a mistake which led up to, obviously, the Romanian goal.
17:07That was just a mistake by the Swedish defence or a free kick or a set piece like a corner.
17:12And, you know, you're always on that little thin line that you're not quite sure.
17:16They're knocking these long balls in again now, but there's the whistle for the end of the first half with Romania now leading Sweden by two goals to one.
17:25Let's get a view from Jack and Ray Wilkins.
17:28Are you talking to me, Brian?
17:35Yeah, what do you think of it, Jack, now?
17:37Well, it's a finely balanced game yet. I mean, the Swedes can still get back into this game.
17:43There's still 15 minutes to go. I thought it would have been looking to go with a little mistake there and go behind.
17:50But it's the way the game is. A little mistake and you're out of it.
17:55Where does it stay?
17:57If it stays like it is, I win $10 off Dennis.
18:00Oh, well, gosh.
18:01But I'd rather Sweden win the game and lose it $10.
18:04In fact, I'd rather Sweden have won a normal time and we wouldn't have to go through all this extra time.
18:09But that's the way things are. We've had to sit through it.
18:11And we've seen some goals, which is good.
18:14That's something to take $10 off Dennis Law.
18:18Yeah, well, listen, he'll pay off, I'm sure.
18:22Ray Wilkins, what about you?
18:23Ray, what's your thoughts?
18:24I actually wrote down in the corner of my paper, just before Kevin said it, fear factor.
18:29And I think this is the only game of the quarterfinals where both sides haven't wanted to lose.
18:34All the rest have actually gone out to win the match.
18:36And I think this one, they've just sat through and just tried to keep possession of the ball.
18:41And it's been, consequently, it's been a pretty dour-old affair.
18:45But now Romain are in front. I feel they have enough in their outfit to retain possession of the ball and not give Sweden a look in.
18:53Ray, thanks a lot. Thank you, Jack.
18:57I just wonder, Kevin, what odds you would have got for Bulgaria and Romania in the semi-finals at the start of this event?
19:03Well, you know, it's been a... not a strange World Cup, a very interesting World Cup.
19:09And we're in the land of the free. That's why they're singing their anthem.
19:14And, you know, they're there because they've hung in there when they've had to hung in.
19:18They've defended well when they've had to defend.
19:20And they have been inventive when they've needed to be.
19:23Well, we're the shots.
19:25But you're right, Brian. They're not every... you know, if you wrote down your final four, nobody would have put these two into the semi-finals.
19:35But that's great for football. Just that little bit of... the unpredictable.
19:40Here comes Hadji.
19:41And a child has made a break for him. And so, too, had Dimitrescu.
19:46He's got a little knock there, Brian, and he's limping back. And I wouldn't be surprised if Tommy Svensson brings on a fresh pair of legs.
20:01Because, you know, with... with ten, many just take its toll. And, of course, it is still hot here. We mustn't let people think that this... today's really cool here. It's just cooler than it has been.
20:13It has been cold in this commentary box. I tell you. I should have told me to have brought a coat with me.
20:19Here comes Hadji.
20:24And Lira.
20:28He's got it away, but not very far. Straight to Hadji. A nonchalant little header there to Lupescu.
20:32Sheremesh.
20:41Dimitrescu.
20:45Shot by Pandura. Well wide.
20:49The Swedes want to take everything fairly quickly now.
20:53And the sub... the sub coming on for... Sweden is Larsson.
20:57I think that's a good move from Tommy Svensson. It's a last throw of the dice.
21:09But he has got pace, this lad. And he has got a fresh pair of legs. And that... that could yet get them something.
21:13Olin.
21:18A long way out.
21:19Goal kick to Romania.
21:20Goal kick to Romania.
21:32Jordan Escu the... Romanian coach.
21:39He's a very good striker in his day. And 64 caps for Romania.
21:42Mania. Anderson playing it high towards Kenneth Anderson. Then for Ingersoll, he didn't quite
21:52collect that one. Oh, and he's giving it away there. And there was a handball there. Oh,
22:01that's a silly yellow card to give. It is because he fell. He didn't mean it. Okay,
22:05he was right to give a free kick. It was handball. But he just fell. He couldn't help him. And
22:10that's what I think that Clive Thomas was on the mound when he was saying about referees.
22:14They've got to use a bit of discretion and say, hey, he slipped. Yes, it's a free kick,
22:18but no, it's not a bookable offence. Roline with the free kick. Too high for Larson.
22:26I mean, I think Philip Don's done well, and I like him as a referee, but I think that's one
22:30of the duftest yellow cards I think I've ever seen. But if FIFA is saying for handball,
22:36it's a yellow card, and there's no, you know, that's it, then what can he do?
22:40But you see, that's taking Clive Thomas's point. That's where referees are refereeing like robots.
22:53Petrescu.
22:54Petrescu.
23:00Petrescu.
23:02Petrescu.
23:04Petrescu chasing.
23:06Getting a little caught up there. Gets it nicely onto his left foot, though.
23:10The clearance only goes as far as Petrescu.
23:12Petrescu turning away.
23:14For a yard.
23:16And finding it.
23:18Petrescu.
23:20Place over on the left for Shelley.
23:22She's gone across there.
23:24And said it's offside, Shelley.
23:26Yes.
23:28Right in line with us,
23:30because we're halfway between the centre line and the goal,
23:32and that was an absolutely correct decision there by Mr Park,
23:36the linesman from Korea.
23:38Maria.
24:00Petrescu getting it back to Plonea.
24:02That liquor.
24:03To Clonea.
24:08Terranich.
24:22Trevor Nielsen.
24:24Up to Larsson.
24:26Arsene.
24:32Shelevesh does well there.
24:34Came off the referee then and fell straight to Sweden.
24:37That was unfortunate for the Romanians, but they fight hard enough to get it back again.
24:41Indira.
24:42Little touch there towards Dumitrescu.
24:47Myung.
24:49Oh, Indira.
24:51Fresh legs again.
24:52Dumitrescu chasing after that one, won't get to it.
24:54Erlen Nielsen, the good pro that he is.
24:56Spotted that quickly.
24:58Had the legs to get back there.
25:00Last.
25:02They'll hit a high one here towards Kenneth Anderson, but it wasn't high enough.
25:08Bello Didici.
25:10Being tracked here by Ingersson.
25:14About nine minutes of this game left.
25:18Romania leading 2-1.
25:20He just joined us.
25:32The Swedes went ahead late in the second half.
25:36The wonderful free kick goal.
25:38Thomas Brolin.
25:40Revelli right out.
25:42Romania saved themselves with a goal with just about a couple of minutes left.
25:48From Revitiu.
25:50And then went ahead in extra time through the same player.
25:54A throw given to Romania.
26:00Well, the linesmen couldn't have been any closer to that.
26:02I know the crowd don't like it, but it was literally one yard from that incident.
26:06Actually, linesmen will very often tell you, Kevin, that you can be too close to it.
26:10You know, it's sometimes difficult to spot.
26:14But Brolin's going across to take that throw.
26:20That free kick goal.
26:22And then decides that Roger Leung will do it instead.
26:26Now, the big men of Sweden in that Romanian penalty area.
26:32And they force this tie to penalties.
26:36Up they go. Up they go again.
26:38Fingerson.
26:44And Radachau.
26:46Ball was out of play. It'll be a throw to Sweden.
26:51About eight minutes left.
26:59Water bottles knocked over.
27:01Quite in the need for those water bottles.
27:04As we had down in Orlando.
27:07As Jack would know well.
27:11Bella Daducci getting it away.
27:13Look at Revelli again.
27:16Every second counts really now for the Swedes.
27:19As he hoists it long and high again.
27:22Up towards Kenneth Anderson.
27:23And now Larsson with a little back heel.
27:25Florin trying to get Larsson in.
27:27And they've won a corner.
27:29It's called for discipline defending from the Romanians now.
27:37And pulling everybody except one player back.
27:41And Lupescu tall man just with the backward header.
27:45He buys a few seconds now for Romania.
27:57Young with it.
28:01Nielsen.
28:03Great opportunity really for Romania to catch them on the break.
28:05Because the Swedes just as Romania were in the last minutes of normal time.
28:09Know that you've got to push everybody forward.
28:11He's scored a goal.
28:13Anderson has done the job.
28:15But he's six foot four frame.
28:17That's putting him in the Sweden team four.
28:19And it's back at 2-2.
28:21And we said earlier Brian we're amazed they didn't just throw some hopeful balls in.
28:33Because they have got a big advantage in height.
28:35But what was the goalkeeper doing?
28:37He's come he's got nowhere near this ball.
28:39And again that will go down as another goalkeeping error.
28:42And we've seen a fair few in this World Cup.
28:44And the Romanian defenders looking at their goalkeeper with their hands outstretched.
28:50Saying exactly what Kevin has just said.
28:53What were you doing?
28:59Up he goes.
29:00Kenneth Anderson.
29:01A terrific goal.
29:03A good headed goal there by the big man.
29:07He hangs really well.
29:09He hangs in the air Brian.
29:11Look he's up.
29:12He's hanging.
29:13And you've got to fault the keeper.
29:14But technically nothing away from Kenneth Anderson.
29:16That is a great striker's goal.
29:20So which way will it turn next?
29:26All this for a place in the World Cup Finals of 1944.
29:37What did I say?
29:3844.
29:3944.
29:40Here's Anderson again.
29:41Oh it's a song!
29:42And Larson will get there!
29:43Nooooooooooo!
29:44Wow!
29:45Well that was an amazing let off.
29:49No! Wow!
29:58Well, that was an amazing let-off.
30:02The Swede's got a corner.
30:07He could so easily have scored a goal.
30:11Again, Kenneth Anderson doing a terrific job,
30:14and the keeper doing well to hold in the fade.
30:19Extraordinary.
30:24It's just like yesterday's game you were telling me,
30:26the Holland-Brazil one, which was nondescript for so long,
30:29and then suddenly burst into the most extraordinary action.
30:35Yeah, as players get tired,
30:36and as players just find that little bit extra to try and win games,
30:40it's amazing.
30:41But how are we going to see coaches playing ten men in the future?
30:44Every time they get ten men in this World Cup,
30:46they seem to come on for it.
30:50The extraordinary thing is the Swedes,
30:51who looked so good and aggressive,
30:53I'd forgotten for a moment they were down to ten.
30:55Schwartz sent off, of course.
30:58Nielsen, whose cross was a perfect one for Kenneth Anderson.
31:02Up to Larsson.
31:04Di Quescu.
31:09Di Quescu.
31:11Lada Chou.
31:20Trying to find a mistake here but...
31:25Tormach gets it back successfully to Thomas Ravelli.
31:32Ingersoll.
31:35Amazing twists and turns of this game, which I have to say for about 80% of it has been pretty nondescript and pedestrian.
31:42But it looked as though Broline had won it with a terrific free kick.
31:47And that Romania were out of it.
31:49Then Romania came back.
31:51And then it looked as though they were going to put Sweden to a sword.
31:57And now suddenly Sweden are level and they're looking to make a winner.
32:04But the only thing that could have changed is the thoughts of the players.
32:07They're more positive now, Sweden. They're down to ten.
32:09You can't defend that well with ten men. You're going to get caught out.
32:12So, you know, attack, take the game to them.
32:15And it seems to happen so many times in football.
32:17How many times have we seen ten men beat 11 back home in England this year?
32:20A lot of times.
32:22It's just a little bit more from each player.
32:24And, of course, the opposition sometimes think they can get away.
32:26We're just jogging back, not racing back.
32:28So, mentally, they sort of lose the advantage they've got.
32:32They...
32:34Little bit of acceleration.
32:40Well...
32:42Pitrescu.
32:44Shelemesh now.
32:46LUPESCU.
32:48Agi, will he find something to finish it off?
32:53Oh, the ball went easily there.
32:56Through the claw mark.
33:01Anderson.
33:03Give it to me, says Brolin.
33:07Nielsen.
33:08Ten men coming forward again.
33:11Trying to release Kenneth Anderson, but Popescu is back.
33:14It'll be a throw for Sweden.
33:16And we're inside the last minute of extra time.
33:40That's the end of extra time.
33:42And we get penalties now. Is that a free kick?
33:44No, it's a free kick.
33:46You can see, just a few seconds left on the clock now.
34:02Both sides now know that the ultimate test in a way, in a cut tie of this importance, now faces them.
34:12It's a Swedish throw.
34:22The worst thing that happened for Romania was Sweden going down to ten men, definitely.
34:26Well, there is the end of extra time.
34:28And now we have a penalty shootout.
34:30Let's just have a quick word with Jack Charlton about penalty shootouts.
34:36Jack, of course, you had just that against Romania in 1990 in the World Cup.
34:42Yes, I did.
34:44It was.
34:45What do the managers, what do the managers say now?
34:48What did you say to your fellas?
34:49Well, they, they, we just let our lads pick who was going to take the penalties.
34:52They decided on the park.
34:54They had already decided who was going to take them.
34:56You said, and all I did was walk on.
34:58And when I was sat down waiting to go, I just said, look, make your mind at what you're going to do and do it.
35:02Don't change your mind.
35:04And we scored five penalties.
35:06And they, in fact, you want to save one, they scored four and this one.
35:10And that put us through.
35:12But it's a, it's a terrible way to go out.
35:14I mean, and they're obviously trying to boy up the Romanian keeper here because it was his mistake that, that led to that second Swedish goal.
35:22It wasn't so much of a mistake.
35:24I mean, the guy came for a cross and it was a great leap in front of him.
35:28He got across the front of the goalkeeper.
35:30Sometimes it's very difficult for goalkeepers there.
35:33He's come out and he hasn't been able to jump.
35:35You should really take the ball at its highest point, but they don't always get, when you've got to use your feet, you don't always get that, that, that, that jump that you want.
35:42And the guy got up well, really, the Swede, and it was a great header, Anderson.
35:46It's the first we've seen of him.
35:48So he didn't do very much in the game, but he was, er, was very necessary there.
35:53Good header.
35:54Good pictures there because the Romanian coaching staff obviously saying to Pranea,
35:58look, forget what happened in the, that's past.
36:00You can be a hero now.
36:02And indeed the goalkeeper, I don't know how Paki Bonafield about it.
36:05I mean, if you, if you have five penalties stuck past you, then very often there's not much you can do about it.
36:09There's a great chance also that you can turn out to be a terrific hero.
36:15Big Jack.
36:16I thought you'd left me.
36:18Yeah, that's right.
36:19No, I'd never do that.
36:20It was, er, in those days it was very tense.
36:24And, and you put the ball down, you go back, you pick your spot, you go and you do it.
36:29And we did.
36:30And when Paki saved the penalty, I mean, it was a great, huge relief to get it out of the way.
36:35But I did really feel sorry for the Romanian lads as I walked off the park, because what a way to go out of a World Cup.
36:41I mean, they're now facing the possibility of going out of this one in the same fashion.
36:45That's right.
36:46Each team's been a couple of minutes away from being, you know, being through the competition.
36:51Yes.
36:52And then all of a sudden it's been a real battle.
36:54It's not been a great game, but it's, er, they've played a long time for a result.
36:59The thought also, Jack, is that players who've been through 90 minutes and then extra time in this sort of heat, that emotionally and physically and mentally you're absolutely drained and you've still got to find that one supreme moment.
37:12Yes, you've got to put the ball down, you've got to go up and you've got to take your, look at the goals, pick your spot and you've got to go do it.
37:19Now, if you do it and you've got to, if you're strong in your mind and you do it, if the goalkeeper goes the right way and saves one and you've done it the way you wanted it, it's done okay, you accept it.
37:29But, like, there are certain people who can take penalties and certain people who can't take penalties.
37:34But the players on that field now, they will know exactly who's going to take them.
37:39Would you want to?
37:41For me?
37:42Yeah.
37:43Well, I once took a penalty and I missed it.
37:46But, I mean, er, I would never have been selected.
37:49Centre-backs don't tend to be picked to take penalties.
37:52John Cunnington, I think, was the only guy I ever saw regularly took penalties for this field.
37:56Right, right.
37:57Well, five fellas from each side have got to take penalties here now.
38:04There's a lot down to the goalkeepers as well, you know, and Ravelli's quite quick.
38:07Yes.
38:08And we're back in to save a few.
38:12Right, Jack, thanks a lot for that, but let's see how it goes now.
38:15Did you ever go into a penalty shootout, Terry?
38:18No, I can't remember going into any penalty shootouts.
38:21I can remember seeing some fantastic ones which have actually saved games and you remember the penalty shootout.
38:26You remember the penalty shootouts more than you do the actual games that brought them about.
38:30But I wouldn't.
38:32I think this is a prime example of the people who want to play, you know, what they call sudden death.
38:38I don't think this game today would have been a fair contest if it had gone on and on and on, you know.
38:44Although, I must say, I would have fancied Sweden again.
38:47Yeah.
38:48We've had this, you know, to-in and fro-in, the seesawing of the potential winners of this match, haven't we?
38:53Sweden looked to have it won.
38:55Romania come back.
38:56Then Romania get in front.
38:58Sweden get a man sent off and then Sweden come back into the game.
39:01Yes.
39:02That's been the fascination of it.
39:03And it's Hakann Milt, who's only playing today because Jonas Turn, his captain, is injured, who takes the first one.
39:11Big responsibility too on the referee to make sure that everything is conducted perfectly.
39:15And straight away, he said to Milt, that ball has got to be on the spot.
39:18So, is Sweden now looking to go one-off in the penalty shootout?
39:22Oh!
39:23He's ballooned it over the top!
39:31Well, that's a disastrous start for the Swedes.
39:37If you think back to the penalties the other night, Brian, um, Bulgaria.
39:43Was it Bulgaria who took the penalties and trying to think which game it was now?
39:46It seems that there was a penalty shootout.
39:49And all five, Stojkovic and people like this, they were very cool under pressure.
39:59Well, it's Raduchow, who scored twice, and now looks to add this one.
40:08What a good penalty!
40:09What a good penalty!
40:10Right in the corner.
40:11Taking, uh, Jack Charlton's view.
40:16He'd obviously made up his mind where he was going to put that one.
40:19And he rammed it straight in there.
40:21Well, I think to be fair, so did Milt.
40:23But unfortunately, he got under the ball and put it over.
40:26I think the most difficult one to take is the first one.
40:29Here comes the next one.
40:30I think he'll just blast it this way.
40:31And it runs.
40:32Sweden, already have missed one.
40:33But that's...
40:34Straight in there.
40:35That levels it up at 1-1 on the score.
40:36But of course, Romania have taken one fewer.
40:37George Hadji is the next to go.
40:38Good penalty.
40:39When they say goalkeeper has no chance, there's the perfect example.
40:52But Hadji, who is a little magician.
40:54And we've seen and delighted at some of the skills he's shown in this World Cup.
41:12But now, it's not just a matter of skills.
41:16It's a matter of a supreme test of nerve.
41:20He's given a fantastic example to his Romanian side.
41:23He's got one more big job to do here now.
41:31Revelle's on the line.
41:35Hadji with the shot.
41:37Perfect penalty.
41:39And he just gave a little shake of the fist there.
41:42So the relief for him was pretty good.
41:44Not so for Revelle.
41:49Another good penalty, Brian, this one.
41:51Picked his spot, just like Jack said.
41:53And whoosh.
41:54That faithful left foot of his.
41:56Did not let him down.
41:57Now, Thomas Broline, I think, is the next one coming up for Sweden.
42:02Who looked, after 88 minutes or so,
42:05as though with his lovely piece of invention,
42:08everyone had won the tie for the Swedes.
42:16There's an anxious face of the goalkeeper.
42:19What alertness there is in Florian Premier's face there.
42:27Well, if there was an escape with the second Swedish goal,
42:29he's got a chance to redeem himself.
42:31And Broline, calm as you like, wheels away.
42:38It levels it at 2-2.
42:39But of course, as I've said before,
42:41the Romanians have taken one penalty fewer.
42:44It's a cruel game.
42:45And you've got a man coming forward now, which is Lupescu.
42:54Who plays in Germany for Bayer Leverkusen.
42:56And has really worked probably as hard as anybody on this field today.
43:01Through those midfield areas.
43:03I think he's been their best player, Brian, this guy.
43:06I wouldn't disagree with you.
43:07And it could all mean nothing in a moment.
43:11But he's rammed that one home as well.
43:143-2 now to Romania.
43:16Are we going to see another twist?
43:20The Swedes actually are looking around,
43:22not sure who's next to go.
43:25Ingersson.
43:26It's Ingersson who's going.
43:31The advantage is back with Romania,
43:32but we've seen it swing so much in this match,
43:34you wouldn't bet against it swinging back again.
43:37To do that, of course, he's got to stick this one in as Ingersson.
43:43Players don't look too happy with the penalty spot.
43:45Chopping it around a little bit as if it's a bit worn away.
43:48Worn away.
43:51Ingersson.
43:52Against.
43:53Cromia.
43:5525-year-old Romanian goalkeeper.
44:00Right will kick this for Sweden.
44:09It's there to be another twist.
44:11Dan Petrescu comes forward.
44:13As we can see the replay of that.
44:16Full-back.
44:2426 years old.
44:27Played for Stoja Ducharist.
44:29Played in Italy for Foggia.
44:31Now for Genoa.
44:33Missed the 1990 World Cup Finals with a knee injury,
44:36but could make a little name for himself.
44:39Here!
44:40What's saved by Ravelli!
44:42Down he goes on his knees, the poor Romanian.
44:52And that levels it up.
44:53And you've got to say, Brian, if you're going to put a penalty anywhere,
44:57this is the easiest place for a keeper to reach.
45:00Just the right height, and that's what Ravelli did.
45:02Well, Petrescu is in tears.
45:10Roland Nielsen, a captain's part.
45:13The fifth penalty.
45:14We stand absolutely level.
45:15And if this goes in, Brian, imagine the pressure on the last player that Romania decides going to take their penalty.
45:24If Nielsen sticks this in, this could be a semi-final place.
45:27It really could.
45:28But if he doesn't, then Romania will say, well, we've only got to stick one in ourselves.
45:33Roland Nielsen now for Sweden.
45:35Well, he certainly meant that one to go in.
45:38And now, suddenly, what an amazing seesaw game this is.
45:43Suddenly, you would have thought Romania were just a couple of kicks away from a semi-final place.
45:49Now they have to score from this one to save the possibility of a semi-final place.
45:54Sweden leading by 4-3 on penalties.
45:59And, of course, if Dimitrescu scores from this, we go on taking them in a sudden-death fashion.
46:08What a vital kick of the ball this is.
46:13And Ravelli do it again.
46:18We go into overtime in the penalty shootout now.
46:21Were they having words? They were having words.
46:25I'll tell you why they're having words.
46:26Because Ravelli is doing something similar to what Bruce Grobelar was doing.
46:31If you remember in Rome.
46:33You can see it there. There it is now.
46:35Just jogging on the line.
46:37Yeah, and that's...
46:39I think Don's had a word with him.
46:40I don't think Philip Don's booked him. He may have done, because he's...
46:43No, I don't think he has.
46:44No, I think he's just keeping a note of the penalties.
46:46Now it's sudden death.
46:47Now it's sudden death.
46:48The sixth one comes up, and that's lost.
46:52If he scores, and the Romanian misses, Swedes go through.
46:57Suddenly if he misses and the Romanians score, the Romanians go through.
47:03And he scores.
47:05Slotted that in beautifully.
47:06And you've got to remember, Brian, the ones coming up now are the ones who didn't want to take them or weren't considered to take them.
47:22That's right.
47:23You know, each one who walks up now. I mean, I've never been in this situation. I can honestly say I'm pretty pleased about them.
47:30Yeah, I don't think there are many of the millions who are watching us now that say, I tell you what, I wouldn't mind being in this man's shoes.
47:37Not many would want that.
47:41Well of the DJ.
47:43Well of the DJ.
47:46The sorry for me!
47:48Sweden go through!
47:52The goalkeeper's the hero.
47:54And for the second successive World Cup, Romania go out on a penalty shootout.
47:59Beaten by Jack Charlton's Ireland in 1990.
48:04And now by Tommy Svensson Sweden in 1994.
48:08You have to feel dreadfully sorry for the Romanians.
48:12But the Swedes have shown great stickability.
48:15And Thomas Rivelli, their veteran goalkeeper, is the real hero of the day now.
48:20Well that's been an amazing finale.
48:26And the Swedes going into the centre circle.
48:29I hope to salute their fans and I hope also to commiserate with the Romanians.
48:35Who are just lying there now, completely shocked by what's gone on.
48:41They've given everything.
48:43They looked for a while in that second period of extra time when Sweden were down to ten men and they were leading.
48:48As though they'd won it.
48:50It looked as though a semi-final place against Brazil was there for the taking.
48:54But the Swedes are together.
48:57They're a family unit.
49:00They are loving every moment of it.
49:02And my word how they worked for this place in a semi-final against Brazil.
49:08Their nerves stayed intact, none more so than Thomas Rivelli.
49:12Their 35 year old goalkeeper winning a record number of caps today, being embraced by the manager Tommy Svensson.
49:21It's a wonderful climax for the Swedes and one of sheer dejection for the Romanians.
49:28Thank you to all of your great fans and a part of making soccer history.
49:35Thrilling.
49:37For the winning side in a shootout.
49:40Obviously you can just look at the Romanians and agonise right along with them.
49:45Well, we had a similar experience against Australia and we're on the losing end of the penalty shots.
49:51And I guess what's the most unfortunate aspect of it is that what you've just gone through, the penalty shots,
49:58have no bearing on what you've done for the previous 120 minutes.
50:02And that really is frustrating.
50:05And for Romania, let's give them credit.
50:07They've really done far better than anybody expected them to do.
50:09And do you salute Rivelli or do you put some blame on Velo de Dicci?
50:15It wasn't a great kick.
50:17We'll take a look at it here.
50:18But you've got to give credit for Rivelli.
50:20He's sort of holding his gun as long as possible.
50:22And then it's the Neil Guessing game.
50:24But he made an exceptional save there getting his left hand out.
50:28Whether it's the experience or not.
50:30But he was moving a little bit.
50:32You've got to keep those feet anchored.
50:34But what a great save to get across to make...
50:36into the semi-final isn't he?
50:40I think that's the point that Kevin Keevan had made regarding the shot and putting it up mid-height.
50:47It is easier for the goalkeeper to stop it there than it is if it's along the ground or up high in the top corner.
50:53And Rivelli takes flight and so does Sweden.
