00:00When the surface at the Queen's Park Oval spread fire in the second innings of the third
00:05test match against India in April 1989, one man stood firm, Richie Richardson, facing
00:11relentless bounce pace and pressure.
00:14The Antiguan right-hander produced a knock of the highest level, 99 runs of 277 balls
00:20across 352 minutes.
00:23Only four boundaries came off his bat, but every run was worth its weight in gold.
00:28This was not a flamboyant innings, it was a survival manual.
00:32Wicket kept crashing around him, but Richie Richardson absorbed the pressure like a seasoned
00:37journal.
00:38While others faltered, he countered the Indian attack with solid footwork, soft hands and
00:43immense concentration.
00:45His ability to rotate the strike and keep the scoreboard ticking turned the tricky situation
00:50into a match-winning platform.
00:52West Indies ended their innings on 266, a total that looked modest but was pure gold on that
00:58surface.
00:59It gave the ballers enough to attack with purpose and they made it count.
01:03Rolling India over in the final innings and sealing a thumbing 217 runs victory.
01:09Richie Richardson fell one shot of a deserved century but this 99 was no less than 100 in
01:15value.
01:16For students of test match batting, this is essential viewing.
01:19Not all heroics come in shiny packages, some come wrapped in grit, sweat and discipline.
01:25Got his eye in yet.
01:26That's a good shot.
01:27Very strange player in a way, Richardson.
01:32Lovely timing, but most of his shots dominated by the bottom hand.
01:38Another good shot and he loves those short balls outside of Stump.
01:52He's in tremendous form, in spite also of having an injury to his right hand.
01:5990 in the Barbados test, a career best, 194 in Georgetown in the first and look at him play
02:06here in the third.
02:08Marvellous shot.
02:13Kappeldev to Richardson.
02:14In the air he played out one handed.
02:19He went straight through the gap, took this rather painful bottom hand completely off the
02:26bat handle, simply followed through and still he timed it.
02:31Of course he plays a new ball a great deal coming in at number three Richardson and there's
02:34a lot of jarring on the bottom hand and that's probably why he let it go right at the last
02:38moment.
02:39But the loss of power was negligible as that went to the boundary.
02:48But a recovery.
02:49Yes, and they shouldn't have got really 200 against a decent attack.
02:55And that was worth a shot I suppose, although probably the turn would have taken it down the
03:01legs up.
03:02I think really India will be disappointed having put West Indies in in the first innings
03:06not to bowl them out for round 200, but 314 they eventually got.
03:09Let's have another look at that delivery.
03:11You can see it just spinning down the legs up.
03:13May well be a match winning total.
03:15By the tourists.
03:18They've had to put a man deep sweeping up there behind the covers for Richie Richardson.
03:27That's his powerful play on the offside.
03:30Another thundering shot by Richardson.
03:42A couple more runs and a great cheer around the stadium.
03:49This is an off-drive which every child watching should copy if he wants to learn how to play the game properly.
03:58Got into a beautiful position.
03:59Put your power on the bottom hand but holding it on course with the right and a good throw
04:04of this by Sidhu too.
04:06Good sideways action and throw.
04:08Just look at that.
04:09That's about 60 yards straight into the wicker keeper's glove.
04:12The lead now 2-6-4.
04:23He loves that shot.
04:28He plays it so well.
04:29He leans well over the ball.
04:34And such power, Richie Richardson.
04:39He's also a very accomplished tennis player.
04:42A fine all-round athlete, Richie Richardson.
04:51Down the leg side.
04:52Irwani to Richardson.
04:55Good footwork.
04:57A quick second.
05:02Nicely placed.
05:15And that's Richardson's half-century.
05:21Yet again he's plundering these Indian spinners.
05:26What a strange shot and, well, I think he got back in time.
05:37Attempted stumping by Kieran Morey.
05:39He was very quick.
05:40Ball not quite coming through quickly enough for the keeper to make the stumping.
05:45He goes up the wicker quite a long way, Richie, but he's so athletic.
05:49Just watch.
05:50When he realises he's gonna miss that ball, keeps on going with the bat and gets it back behind the crease.
05:54Sand wedge in his hand.
05:56Could be at least two here.
06:09There he is.
06:10Hidwani now.
06:11Oh, it's a top edge and misses these diving slip.
06:17A false shot by Richardson.
06:20One of the very few he's played in the whole series.
06:23And these take a lot of catching with slip because it's a thick edge.
06:28It really is flying at speed.
06:30The slip is only about four yards back.
06:32He made a good effort at that.
06:34A hundred and ninety-nine for seven.
06:39So a staggering sort of innings by West Indies, but they've fought their way out of trouble after being twenty-six for four.
06:47And this is how the match stands now.
06:49West Indies, one-nine-nine for seven, are three hundred and sixty-three runs ahead.
06:54So it's the fourth who can hold together, the tail-end effort, with Ambrose batting, Bishop to come.
07:01And Arshad Ayub is the off-spinner.
07:05To Richardson.
07:06Swept away.
07:08He's not told a really good line.
07:10Fumble there by Hidwani.
07:12He steals two and Ayub doesn't feel properly any glares at Hidwani.
07:18I wouldn't blame that as a man.
07:22Wasn't a very good ball.
07:24Keppeldale.
07:26Oh, what luck.
07:29What luck.
07:30What luck by Bishop.
07:33But they all count.
07:34Inside edge.
07:35Beats the stump, beats the wicketkeeper, and flies away for four.
07:44Well, Keppeld's gone back over the wicket here, and he's not having any luck at all.
07:48That must have been within a whisker of hitting the off-stump.
07:52Two hundred and twenty for eight.
07:55The West Indies extend their score.
08:04Richardson.
08:07Nice bit of fielding there.
08:09And this was a good piece of running by Bishop backing up.
08:19Watch.
08:20Richardson calls him, and Bishop is out of the box very quickly.
08:22And he needed to be as well, because he was under very fast indeed the fielder.
08:27Ritchie Richardson, the scourge of the Indians in this test match series.
08:34Hits him on the foot.
08:35Oh, that must be close.
08:37Keppeldale appeals for LBW.
08:39They all appeal.
08:41More is upset, and so is Keppel upset.
08:43I can't believe it.
08:47Very full-length delivery.
08:48Swinging late.
08:49Come on, man, he says to the umpire.
08:51Part of the game is accepting the umpire's decision, but really this was an extraordinary one.
08:58It could only have hit the stunts.
09:00I don't know quite what the umpire was thinking of, though.
09:06Cheaton Sharma, time to bow.
09:12And that's short.
09:15Richardson really does have a great range of strokes.
09:21Oh, a bit of luck about that.
09:42Thick top edge down to Sidhu.
09:46Well, how did they get two?
09:48Keppeldale, not a happy man this morning.
09:55Richardson will be happy if he can get there.
09:57He's on 99.
10:01I think Keppeldale got upset here because Sidhu took a long time winding up and throwing.
10:06You watch now.
10:07If he picked that up and thrown it within one stride,
10:09that would almost certainly have ended in Richardson's being run out.
10:12Look at this.
10:13One, two, three, four, five steps before he threw it.
10:16So, maybe he picked the pad, but certainly gets straight to his guard.
10:24And now, Richie Richardson, I'm afraid, has to go.
10:28Bowled by Keppeldale for 99.
10:30Very bad luck for him.
10:32I cannot understand why he walked back.
10:34I know they like batting these fellas, but you can't get more comprehensively bowled than that.
10:39Standing ovation for a very popular player here.
10:44250 for nine.
10:4795 overs.
10:49266 all out there in the West Indies.
10:53And that leaves India 400.
