How to get permanent residency in UK after study?

Are you an international student in the UK wondering how to stay permanently after completing your studies? In this video, we’ll guide you through the steps and visa options that can help you transition from a student to a permanent resident.

Studying in the UK offers a great opportunity to experience life in one of the world’s most developed and diverse countries. Many international students aspire to stay in the UK after completing their studies and make it their permanent home. If you are considering this, there are several pathways you can explore.

1. Switch to a Skilled Worker Visa
After completing your studies, you can switch from your Student Visa (Tier 4) to a Skilled Worker Visa if you have a job offer from a UK employer. The employer must be a licensed sponsor and offer a position that meets the salary and skill requirements. This visa allows you to live and work in the UK for up to 5 years and can lead to permanent residency (Indefinite Leave to Remain or ILR) after 5 years of continuous residence.

2. Graduate Visa (Post-Study Work)
The Graduate Visa allows international students to stay and work in the UK for 2 years (3 years for PhD graduates) after completing their degree. This visa provides time to gain valuable work experience and secure a permanent job, which can later lead to switching to the Skilled Worker Visa.

3. Apply for ILR (Indefinite Leave to Remain)
Once you have lived in the UK for 5 years on a Skilled Worker Visa, you can apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR). ILR grants you the right to live in the UK indefinitely, work without restrictions, and apply for British citizenship after 12 months.

00:00Hello and welcome to the Smart Move to UK. In this episode, we're going to speak about
00:05students who are in the UK. Dreaming of making the UK your permanent home after studying here?
00:12Let's explore the pathway to permanent residency for international students.
00:17Completing your studies in the UK is just the beginning. Once you have graduated, there are
00:33several steps to secure your permanent residency. Step 1. Apply for a graduate route, also known as
00:42post-study work visas. This visa allows you to stay in the UK for up to two years after completing
00:48your degree. For PhD graduate, it's up to three years. This experience of staying in UK will help
00:54you because in the post-graduate pathway, your restrictions are opened up now. You are no longer
01:01restricted to just working 20 hours. You can work 24 by 7. You can do part-time job, full-time job,
01:09freelance work. You can start your own businesses and can do all of it if you can manage all of it.
01:15So this is the golden time for which you had entered. This is the rich experience that you can
01:21gain in UK for a period of two years before you start your career. During this period, you can work
01:27or look for work at any skill level without being tied to a specific employer. Step 2. Secure a job
01:35that qualifies for your skilled worker visas. Your employer must be approved by the Home Office and
01:41provide you with a certificate of sponsorship. So make sure that your employer is registered under the
01:46sponsor license list and you know you can have a conversation with them. Generally for students,
01:52this is my tip here. The struggle to find an employment is evident once you are passed out or you've
01:59graduated and it's hard for an employer to give you a skilled worker visa at the inception unless you are
02:07in a shorted occupation list. Once you kind of have proved your competency in two years period that you
02:13get an opportunity to work with them, then I'm sure the employer is happy to have that conversation
02:20and is happy to help you to get the COS and convert your visas from graduate to skilled worker visas.
02:28With the skilled worker visas, you can stay in the UK for up to five years with the possibility of
02:34extending it. Step 3. Apply for indefinite leave to remain in the UK. After you've lived in the UK
02:41for a continuous five years, you will qualify for indefinite leave to remain in the UK. At this stage,
02:48you are one step closer to getting your British nationality. To qualify for ILR, you must meet specific
02:55requirement. Proof of continuous residence for five years, passing the life in UK test,
03:01demonstrating English language proficiency. All of this when met, you will qualify for your
03:06indefinite leave to remain. Achieving permanent residency in UK is a significant milestone. It
03:12requires dedication and planning, but the rewards of making UK your home are well worth the effort. For
