00:00:00Selfish to give you up.
00:00:01I'm not sorry, since it's not like I'm going to argue with what's obviously his line.
00:00:06And just so you know, that memory of yours was really fucking hard.
00:00:09I loved every second of it.
00:00:10He swallows and grips both sides of the desk again, like he already regrets his decision.
00:00:15My brown roots, I'm not quite sure how I even did it.
00:00:18Is the thought sharing an intrinsic thing, or a bond thing?
00:00:20It's happened more than once it does.
00:00:22A corner of his mouth rises, and his grip relaxes.
00:00:25No fucking clue, I've never tried it with anyone else.
00:00:27His work shifts to a full smile, and I breathed little easier.
00:00:30The first time, I was sitting in tactics and couldn't get you out of my damn head.
00:00:34Then you reached out, struggling to me when you'd all but set the whole campus on fire the night before.
00:00:38And I just let the memory play, partly to help you, but mostly so you'd be in the same hell I was in.
00:00:43There's zero guilt in the admission.
00:00:45Now let's get dressed, we probably slept through breakfast.
00:00:48We get ready in relative normalcy considering what just happened.
00:00:51I wrap my knee quickly, going above and below my knee cap to hold it in place, then finish dressing.
00:00:54By the time I slip my armor on over my undershed, Zayden is there, lacing it on just as efficiently as when he takes it off, though one takes considerably longer than the other.
00:01:03You were out late last night, I say as he works his way to the tie.
00:01:06Anything to do with Duke Lindel being here?
00:01:08Yeah, he texts gently, and my shoulder is frightened.
00:01:11Makes me glad you're sleeping here, I know, and his fingers still.
00:01:14All three of the highest houses of Tyrenda are here, two of whom are known to hold allegiance only to the province, and a third is suspected.
00:01:20I glance over my shoulder at him.
00:01:22Was it not Lindel who made Shuyo and Liam a trainpoe into the quadrant?
00:01:26Zayden nods.
00:01:27It was, though Luwin had a hand in it, too.
00:01:29My brows rise.
00:01:30I'm sure it frosts Melren's mind that he could wipe the slate clean.
00:01:33There's a lot of chaos in these halls and almost no one of Frank to notice.
00:01:37Be careful, I say those two words with my eyes.
00:01:40He nods again, then goes back to situating the corset, and I face forward.
00:01:44Teeling me isn't required to annihilate the Jewish aristocracy, officially.
00:01:48I'm just a lieutenant who has no place in any of the negotiations, and yet I'm supposed to speak for Aritya, according to your brother.
00:01:54All done, he ties the corset strings, then shocks the shit out of me by placing a kiss beneath my ear before he walks to the weapons rack by the door.
00:02:00Thanks, do you want to, I ask, pecking my uniform talk on and buttoning it.
00:02:05Sit in on the negotiations, he asks, shrugging on his back sheets.
00:02:08Speak for Aritya, all of it.
00:02:10I cross the room, starting to braid my hair into its usual coronet on my way to the desk, and he looks at me with an expression I can't read.
00:02:16You said you were happy with the way things were running, but I don't know if anyone ever asked you.
00:02:21His brow froze.
00:02:22The assembly runs Aritya.
00:02:23I just owned a house, which is probably a good thing, since I am, well, winning.
00:02:27Great on the battlefield, but not a good burning quality.
00:02:29I lock every muscle to keep from flinching, then continue braiding.
00:02:32Anyway, we are trying to work out the terms of the right staying, and Lolan seems to think he can at least get my father's sword back from Tori, but it's all for his tangle.
00:02:40If we don't stay, Poromi walks.
00:02:41If Nabar can't protect the fires here at Biskile, Poromi walks.
00:02:45If anyone murders anyone, which happens a lot around here.
00:02:48Poromi walks, I guess, reaching for the pins on my desk to secure the braid in place, and most definitely noticing that he used the term me.
00:02:54It's on the tip of my tongue to tell him I'll be actively working on one of those things in the next 48 hours, but he doesn't want to know, and losing control a few minutes ago isn't going to help that stance.
00:03:03Exactly, and two of the third-year flyers had a run-in with first wing last night near the great hall that left everyone bloody.
00:03:09He starts shielding his daggers along his thighs.
00:03:11If Tori isn't willing to take civilians, then Poromi has nothing to gain by promising not to attack our outposts.
00:03:16The only incentives are weapons in keeping the flyers safe.
00:03:18Both of which can be achieved by an alliance with only Aritya, I notice Zeran begins putting my daggers in place, slipping them into the sheets of my thighs and the ones sewn into my uniform along my ribs.
00:03:28Now who sounds like the separatist?
00:03:30His mouth quarks, if we had stable wards, maybe, but we know they're faltering, and even if they weren't, the last time Tyrande attempted to secede, it didn't go, he cocks his head to the side like he's whistling, then stomps toward the door.
00:03:41Whipping it open, I hear fucking killing me, neither of us has even used a barking chamber yet.
00:03:46Ah, there's a hard ass everyone else gets.
00:03:49I don't fight the urge to smile.
00:03:50There's a huge part of me that likes that I'm the only one who gets his softer edges.
00:03:54Who is it?
00:03:54I ask, grabbing my fly jacket off the back of the chair.
00:03:58You are in there with my little sister and you are asking me if I'm kidding you.
00:04:01Brennan snaps back.
00:04:02Usually, I consider myself pretty and standing about the fact that you're sleeping in her bed, and I look the other way when you're two attach yourselves at the face, but we have a meeting in 30 minutes and I need to talk to you before then.
00:04:12Good morning, Brennan, I call out, sweeping my arms into my fly jacket.
00:04:16Hey, Violet, he answers.
00:04:18I have a patrol, Zayden says.
00:04:20He does, Garrick adds from somewhere behind Brennan.
00:04:23How many people are out here?
00:04:25I depend on Zayden's arm, and my bras rise.
00:04:27The hallway is packed.
00:04:28Brennan, Garrick, Llewellyn, Bodhi, and Imogen are all waiting.
00:04:32The days of negotiation have worn on both Llewellyn and Brennan, backing the circles under Brennan's eyes and thickening the salt and pepper stubble on Llewellyn's strong Joe, as though he's been too tired or too busy to shave.
00:04:40Did someone die?
00:04:41Why didn't any of you know?
00:04:43Because she's mean, Garrick nods toward Imogen, who's leading up against the wall to my right.
00:04:48She needs to fucking sleep.
00:04:49She cocks her head to the side at him.
00:04:51Given her rest of your look, I'm guessing you were 20 of that in Innocence's bed last night.
00:04:55How disappointing for her.
00:04:57Damn, Bodhi fights to smother a laugh.
00:05:00A slow smile spreads across Garrick's face, and a dimple pops in his left cheek.
00:05:03Careful, Imogen, you sound a little jealous.
00:05:06Who the hell would be jealous of a flyer?
00:05:08Her pointed glare promises a quick death.
00:05:10Right, Brennan rubbed the bridge of his nose, and Llewellyn walks away, shaking his head.
00:05:14Look, we just need reason.
00:05:16Seriously, figure your shit out, kids.
00:05:18We're in the middle of a war, Mira says from the end of the short hallway, her cheeks were in bobble line still.
00:05:24Fresh in her skin.
00:05:25I instantly grinned, you made it.
00:05:27Thank you, Omari, we have 48 hours in the short.
00:05:30I thought you would do back tonight at the earliest.
00:05:33Brennan raises his reddish eyebrows.
00:05:35Time was feeling spry.
00:05:36Mira's smile could cut glass, but at least she's trying.
00:05:38It took her months to let him back in after she found him alive.
00:05:41Who knows how long she'll need to get over losing her mother on what she considers to be Brennan's watch.
00:05:45I bring news and a few missives.
00:05:47I need everyone to leave now so I can know exactly what this news is.
00:05:50Thank you, Brennan says to Mira, then turns to Zayden.
00:05:53This is more important than patrol.
00:05:55Zayden's hand skims my lower back as he walks into the hall, then follows Brennan to the main hallway.
00:06:00Where Lulean waits, Garrick throws on his heels.
00:06:02Anything I should know about?
00:06:04Bodhi asks, two lines appearing between his brows as Mira sinks her back from her shoulder.
00:06:09We're good.
00:06:09Brennan assures him as the fossil turns the corner and disappears.
00:06:13Good to feel needed.
00:06:14Bodhi mutters, stepping closer as Mira completes our own huddle.
00:06:17Guess we'll be taking the patrol, Imogen.
00:06:19Did you figure it out?
00:06:20I ask Mira, unable to take another second.
00:06:22First, Felix sent a gift.
00:06:24She retrieves a conduit from her bag and hands it to me with a smile.
00:06:28Oh, thank the gods.
00:06:29I sigh with relief as my fingers curl around the metal rimmed glass orb that gives me a semblance of control over my signet.
00:06:34And then there's this, that little spark of hope behind my ribs fans straight into a flame when Mira pulls a wooden, then practice this from her satchel.
00:06:41Chris is a genius.
00:06:43My jaw drops, there are three runes tempted into the disc, one for levitation in the middle, then two in overlapping layers for what appear to be sound shielding in warmth.
00:06:50The outermost line, warmth, is broken by a small green shoot of new growth.
00:06:53How did you do it?
00:06:54It's almost impossible to keep my tone down.
00:06:57After being nearly blown up in her like a projectile, a smile lifts the corners of her mouth, re-altered the material the rune is tempted.
00:07:04Into without destroying it, truly changing its form.
00:07:07Turns out Palin is an agrarian, Mira says.
00:07:09Battle axe is a plant wielder.
00:07:11I whisper.
00:07:12You don't have to whisper, we.
00:07:14Mira grins.
00:07:15The sound shield is still active even though we nullified the warmth rune.
00:07:18It should cover us to almost the edge of the hall.
00:07:20I hear show, I ask.
00:07:22I'm show, it's cool to the touch.
00:07:23And, Mira places a gold coin over the center of the levitation rune, and it floats.
00:07:27Nullifying a rune is mint-blowing.
00:07:29Figuring out how to do it without affecting the others.
00:07:31Incredible.
00:07:32We've got it.
00:07:33It's not without risk, but we can do it.
00:07:36My heart starts to pound.
00:07:37We can save the negotiations.
00:07:39The flyers will stay, and I can keep my deal with Deckeris.
00:07:42If they agree, Imogen says slowly, which I know they won't.
00:07:45Incoming, Bodhi announces, tilting his chin toward the hallway.
00:07:48Brennan slowly makes his way toward us, his gaze focused on the floor like he's deep in thought.
00:07:53We are heading out.
00:07:54Don't tell the others yet, Mira rushes, shoving the disc in her pocket of faith.
00:07:58We have to give the scenario a chance to do the right thing, and the fewer people who knew, the fewer people who were executed for prison.
00:08:04Bodhi and Imogen both nod, and I blink as they start walking away.
00:08:07Hey, where did you need?
00:08:08Why were you waiting?
00:08:09I asked Imogen.
00:08:11Bodhi cramps his hands in his pockets and continues walking, and Imogen glances sideways at Brennan as they pass.
00:08:16Just wanted to make sure you were getting some sleep.
00:08:18She calls back as they turn the corner and disappear.
00:08:21Bodhi, Garak, Imogen, my stomach titans, they were checking to make sure Zayden hadn't killed me.
00:08:26You look like shit, Mira says as Brennan reaches us.
00:08:29I feel like shit.
00:08:30He rubbed the hand over his face.
00:08:32Poromish politics are nothing like ours.
00:08:34I only have a few minutes before I need to get back in there and begs Ignizen to stay at the table.
00:08:38Neither side speaks the language of middle ground.
00:08:40I would think not wanting to be killed by Vennan would encourage them to learn quickly, Mira states, tilting her head just like our mother, which tightens my throat.
00:08:48You would think, he shakes his head.
00:08:50The only thing everyone can agree on is that the flyers will be allowed to prove the quadrant today with their sports first-year riders.
00:08:55Apparently they're not as threatening, and the task force going with you, he says to me.
00:08:59Where exactly is she going?
00:09:00Mira snaps, moving to my side.
00:09:03We are being sent to find the rest of Andren is fine, I answer for Brennan.
00:09:07You what?
00:09:07Her eyes widen to impossible proportions.
00:09:10Andren wants to, I should have told you before you left, but the Empyrean hadn't approved it yet.
00:09:14Guilty against my throat at her stricken expression.
00:09:16She was always going to go, at least Andren was able to make some demand this way.
00:09:20You let this happen, she glares at Brennan, Mira, I start.
00:09:24Quiet, cadet, the officers are speaking, she snaps.
00:09:27Rude.
00:09:28Beyond our needs, Queen Maria hopes the seventh breed might know how to defeat the Vennan, given the age of Andren is egg.
00:09:33He's not far off from our own train of thought.
00:09:35Mira, that hope is all that's shooting Poromi at the table,
00:09:38and we are still negotiating for flyer safety and conferencing with Navarre for the Russian cadets to stay.
00:09:42You know, behind the functioning wards, this is more complicated than it looks.
00:09:46Mira bristles, simple question.
00:09:48Did you tell them over your dead body is our sister flying through what's likely enemy control?
00:09:52Why when filled territory on a full surrender?
00:09:54They should worry more about what will happen when we do find them.
00:09:57Ten growls.
00:09:57If a den of our kind chose to leave, chose to hide, they will not welcome our intrusion.
00:10:02You don't know that, her place is Andren's argument.
00:10:05You are naive to assume otherwise.
00:10:07His tone sharpens, and Andren slams up her face shed.
00:10:09She needs to prepare herself, he says.
00:10:11And so do you, there's every chance this mission will kill us.
00:10:14Or it could save us all, feeding pessimist.
00:10:17He couldn't say no, my grip tightens on the conduit.
00:10:20Aratia needs another of Andren's client to fire their wards stone.
00:10:23Mira wits her face toward mine, horror widening her eyes before they quickly narrow back on our brother.
00:10:27Is that why you sent me off to?
00:10:29Evaluate the status of the wards, so you'd know how long you have before using our sister like a gaming chip.
00:10:35That is not how it happened.
00:10:36His due ticks, I am trying to support what she wants.
00:10:39It's not happening, we have six months, Brennan.
00:10:41She digs into her pack and retrieves a bundle of missives, then shoves them at his chest, him right next to his A-serie name tag.
00:10:48Given the rate they're diminishing, I calculate six months before Toto collapse if we're lucky.
00:10:52Finding Andren's time could take decades.
00:10:54By the time she finds them, if she finds them, Arash is gone.
00:10:57You'd be risking Violet's life for nothing.
00:10:59My stomach hits the floor.
00:11:00Six months, I figured we'd at least have a year or two before the wards gave out.
00:11:04That path timeline just got complicated, but I'll be damned if Zayden loses his home twice.
00:11:09Six months, Brennan's gaze starts between Redox and Reese's toes as if he's performing calculations in his head.
00:11:14No, this is the kind of mission right is still written from.
00:11:17Mira draws back, studying a brother like he's a stranger.
00:11:20Well, that's comforting.
00:11:22This is bigger than the three of us.
00:11:23Hundreds of thousands of civilians are under attack in Parumi.
00:11:26He shoves the missives into his chest pocket and sighs.
00:11:29Of course I don't want her in danger, and they won't let me go with her.
00:11:32I already asked.
00:11:33Find another way.
00:11:34Mira shakes her head.
00:11:35You can't trade Violet's life for strangers.
00:11:37Now you sound like mom.
00:11:39The words fly from his mouth, and to his credit, he immediately winses when both Mira and I gasp.
00:11:44Shit.
00:11:44He hangs his head.
00:11:45You dare mention our mother when you won't even wear it.
00:11:48She grabs the run disc from her pack and throws it at our brother, smacking him square in the chest.
00:11:52He fumbles to catch it.
00:11:53Look at what I've been doing this week.
00:11:55Left an internal ac-ray.
00:11:56Not sure mom would approve.
00:11:57Crap.
00:11:58This is not the cool, calm plan we discussed presenting to our brother.
00:12:02His brows knit as he studies the disc.
00:12:03I don't understand.
00:12:05We found a way to keep the flyers at Buzgai safely, she says.
00:12:08He keeps looking at it, and I see the moment the truth hits him.
00:12:11The blood rains from his face, and his mouth circons.
00:12:14You want to?
00:12:15Yes, and you should find a mirror.
00:12:16Mira interrupts, earning his attention.
00:12:19Sacrificing members of our family for what's considered the greater Buddha's weapon straight out of mom's arsenal.
00:12:23She walks away without another word.
00:12:25I pat his shoulder, take it to the scenario.
00:12:28They'll never agree.
00:12:29You and I both know it's the only way to further this alliance.
00:12:32He nods.
00:12:33That's what I'm afraid of.
00:12:35Never forget that dragon riders have been selected, trained, and even bred for cruelty.
00:12:39Expecting mercy from a rider is a mistake, for none will be given.
00:12:43Chapter 1, The Tactical Guide to Defeating Dragons by Colonel Elijah Joban.
00:12:48OceanoFPDF.com
00:12:49Chapter 5.
00:12:51A few hours later, I'm pretty sure this has been the longest day of my entire life.
00:12:55The gathering hall is next to the waterfall and the perfect place to wait for news,
00:12:58so that's what the three of us two while saw our naps in the first year's tour with the flyers.
00:13:02Sit, with our backs to the wall in case of Navarion rider decides they want to make a point, and wait for Brennan and Mira to bring news.
00:13:08Zayden hasn't returned, either.
00:13:10Not knowing if more Venom could be running around campus is terrifying, but at least if there are, Zayden will sense them.
00:13:15The thought is oddly comforting.
00:13:16That Venom by Jacksell had silver hair, I mutter, setting my dagger to an apple and peeling it in one long ribbon.
00:13:23That's weird, right?
00:13:24Everyone's hair eventually turns grey.
00:13:26That's the least weird thing about yesterday's attack.
00:13:28How long are we supposed to wait to see if they charge us with treason?
00:13:31Redog grumps his fingers on the thick oak table.
00:13:33Let's just go with plan B already before another group of scarily coordinated dark wheelers tries to break Baloo out again.
00:13:39It's called plan A for a reason.
00:13:41Be patient, re-lectures from Redog's right, skimming through the book of traditional artwork Zayden gave me back before I knew it was meant to prepare me for runes.
00:13:47I highly doubt the treaty of Haratia was written in a matter of hours.
00:13:51The initial phase was 13 days of negotiation.
00:13:53I finished peeling the apple as a first-year comes running through the arch double doors, then set my blade down as the gangly guy makes a beeline to a full table in first-wing section, immediately spreading what appears to be a tasty bit of gossip.
00:14:03When are the first-years going to be done?
00:14:05I ask.
00:14:06Whatever rumor first-wing has caught wind of spread quickly, rippling outward from the center table down the line in a fascinating display of turning heads and scrambling to reds.
00:14:14No clue, re-says, turning a page.
00:14:16I'm just hoping it's a peaceful bonding experience, since I'm fairly certain there's some kind of love.
00:14:22Triangle going on between Evelyn, Bela, and Kai, which I normally wouldn't stress about.
00:14:26It's not like Kato's care who any of you asked for fucking last year.
00:14:29So not true, Redog's rods and shoulder bums me.
00:14:32I glance over at the next table to make sure Dan didn't hear, but he's clearly engrossed in conversation with a group of third-years, including Imogen and Quinn.
00:14:40But they keep, rearing through her nose, squarbling, it isn't helping integrate the flyers in this hostile environment, and it's screwing with their interpersonal dynamics.
00:14:48Redog's finger scores, and he takes note of the pattern I've been watching.
00:14:51News spreads from person to person, and Ryder starts scurrying out of the hall.
00:14:55You're seeing this, I nod and sheathe my dagger, leaving my apple unedain.
00:14:58Ree, she goes as the boot and looks up.
00:15:00You think they'll win, a brunette in third-wing ass excitedly, slamming her pewter mug down on the table across from us.
00:15:05No fucking way, it'll be a bloodbath, the guy next to her replies, catching my gaze and quickly averting his as he gets up from the table, grabbing his fly jacket and abandoning his drink.
00:15:15Something's happening, a quick glance down the tables makes my skin crawl.
00:15:18The only riders left in the gathering hall are a Russian.
00:15:21All three of us rise as a stokey cadet barrels through the double doors, and I spot first-year rank and his name tag, Norris, a second before he throws his hood back, revealing his familiar face.
00:15:29Baylor, apprehension slithers between my shoulder blades as the panic in our squadmate's brown eyes, the very creasing the dark brown skin of his forehead.
00:15:37They're here, he shouts over his shoulder, and Sloane races in behind him.
00:15:41I grab my jacket and slip out from behind the table to meet the first-years in the middle of the gathering hall.
00:15:46What's wrong? You have to do something.
00:15:48Sloane stares past me to Rhiannon.
00:15:50She hasn't been able to look me in the eye since she scifled the life out of my mother.
00:15:54First-wing grabbed one of tail-section's flyers in the courtyard, and they're forcing a challenge.
00:15:57My stomach hurtles to the floor.
00:16:00If so much as a drop of flyer blood is shed, it could end the peace talks.
00:16:03We and humans insisting at knife point, Baylor all but growls.
00:16:07Our wing leader is orchestrating this.
00:16:08There aren't enough four-letter words in the world.
00:16:10Article 4, Section 4, We need another wing leader.
00:16:14Let's move, Rhiannon orders, and they spin toward the dog, the dog sliding past me as I turn back to the third years.
00:16:19Dane, I shout, and his head jerks up, his familiar brown eyes finding me instantly.
00:16:24We need you, without waiting for his response, I take off after my squad, shoving my arms into my coat.
00:16:30Dane catches up before we hit the far side of Commons, and the rest of the Rhiannon riders aren't far behind him.
00:16:35We burst through the doorway of the Rotunda into the courtyard, and my gaze sweeps over the crowd, taking stock of the situation.
00:16:40There's a clear division in the mass gathered in front of the days, with most Leverian riders standing to the left, at least half of them wearing sickening smurfs, while Caroline Ashton appears to take bets near the fast AKs.
00:16:50The rest hold back the angry crowd of Russian riders and flyers arguing directly in front of.
00:16:54My heart lurches into my throat.
00:16:57Auroby and Heaven stand centered in front of the crowd, holding one of the daggers she usually keeps trapped to her palms against the tandak of the terrified first-year flyer.
00:17:04And there's no leadership in sight.
00:17:07Find his squadron to escalate at all costs, Dane waters over his shoulder as we race down the steps and into the swarm.
00:17:12If only we were taught those techniques, Red Oak matters.
00:17:15Bear at the front, follow me, Baila tells us, then pushes through the crush like it's nothing, giving us an easy way to follow in.
00:17:21The snow has stopped, only to be replaced by a bit of chill as the sun sinks behind the mountains.
00:17:26Let him go, Kat's voice rises above the others as we reach the front of the crowd, and when Baila steps aside, I escort Marin holding Kat back from the line of never-in-rightness guarding aura, her arms hooked around her best friend's waist.
00:17:36Feel free to accept the challenge, since he won't.
00:17:39A third year out of second wing holds the tip of her sword less than a foot from Kat's stomach.
00:17:43Happy to, she shouts.
00:17:45Holy shit, this place is it in the box just waiting for a single flame to set it ablaze.
00:17:48Palming a dagger, I move before my common sense can get the better of me and put myself in front of Kat, lifting my chin at the third year.
00:17:55This isn't how we treat our fellow cadets.
00:17:58They're not cadets, she snails.
00:18:00I didn't hear her complaining when they were carting your little sister to the infirmary during the battle.
00:18:04Imogen's shoulder rubs against mine as she edges in, urging me back.
00:18:07But if you were going to raise blades, she draws her sword, then you'll do so against someone your own year, away.
00:18:12Quinn pushes through on my other side, forcing Neve, one of our third year friars, behind her and setting the head of her labrace on the ground, squaring off against a guy out of first wing who seems to rise her height.
00:18:22I kick your ass off first year, and I don't mind doing it again, headly.
00:18:25I take the opportunity and spin, putting my forearm at Kat's collarbone and forcing her back into the safety of our squad.
00:18:30I'll fight, she shrieks.
00:18:32You can't, I grasp Kat's forearm with my empty hand.
00:18:35Kat, you can't, if you're full.
00:18:37You'd be so sad to lose your rival, wouldn't you?
00:18:39Her dark eye is narrow on mine.
00:18:41Or are you more intimidated by the thought that I could win and once again prove why I'm the better match for?
00:18:46Oh, shut up, it takes everything I have not to shake her.
00:18:48You can't kneel behind the boards, so stop trying to manipulate my emotions.
00:18:52There's no winning here, if you bleed, we have no chance at an alliance, and I'm not willing to use a squadmate over second wing's facility.
00:18:58You win in hammer right there, you'll confirm everything they fear about you.
00:19:02Her expression softens, and for a second, she looks just like her older sister.
00:19:06They're never going to accept us.
00:19:07They don't have to, I assure her, we already have.
00:19:11Challenge, challenge, challenge, the chant turns from the left and quickly catches along the row of Navarian riders.
00:19:16Shit, nothing like mob mentality.
00:19:19This coward won't accept the challenge of a senior wing leader.
00:19:21Aura shouts over the crowd, using lesser magic to amplify her voice.
00:19:25But I'll be merciful and accept another.
00:19:27Pick your champion or watch him die.
00:19:29This goes against the codex.
00:19:31Dane elbows a Navarian cadet from third wing in the head and pushes through the line.
00:19:33Challenge is the only issue in the presence of a combat master.
00:19:37On what authority do you object?
00:19:39Aura smiles.
00:19:41The crowd quiets, but the silence feels more dangerous than the chanting had been as everyone turns to watch the interaction.
00:19:46Stay here, I Aura cat, then shove my way between Imogen and Quinn.
00:19:50Article 4, Section 4
00:19:51Dane approaches Aura with his hands up, exposing his palms.
00:19:54A wing leader has the authority and duty to maintain.
00:19:57Article 2, Section 1
00:19:58Aura shouts, raking the edge of her dagger along the flyer's throat.
00:20:02Riders outside cord and chain of command can't interfere with correct matters.
00:20:05You are no longer in the chain of command.
00:20:07The Navarian riders matter in agreement, and tension rises like the bubbles in a simmering cord, one degree away from boiling.
00:20:12The cord and has made us far too comfortable shedding each other's blood.
00:20:16My grip tightens on my dagger as well as fills my peripheral vision.
00:20:19I look up to see both griffins and dragons landing along the thick stone walls of the courtyard.
00:20:23Great, just what we need in the situation, fire and talons.
00:20:27Are you here?
00:20:28I ask.
00:20:28There are no black seals among the dragons, but I spot that behind the daze.
00:20:32Are you in danger?
00:20:33Tane asks, and I feel and in his presence, but she remains silent.
00:20:37Not exactly, but...
00:20:39Then I trust you can handle it.
00:20:41Injuring a flyer will jeopardize this alliance, Tane argues, and I nod like he needs the encouragement.
00:20:46Who said we want it?
00:20:48Aura drags the edge of her blade under the flyer's chin, and he vinses but doesn't move.
00:20:51They haven't crossed the parapet.
00:20:53They haven't climbed the gauntlet.
00:20:54They won't even accept a challenge.
00:20:56We do not tolerate clouds.
00:20:58The Navarian right is Chia, and I use the opportunity to dart between the two standing guard in front of us, finding myself quickly flanked by Redog on my left and, surprisingly, Arak on my right.
00:21:07The first tier is almost as tall as Zayden, and his menacing player keep the way in headly silent as they stand with Quinzen Imogen's weapons at their backs.
00:21:14I'll accept.
00:21:15Pay shouts.
00:21:15The first tier flyer charging through the line on the right, and every head turns as we and Bela quickly drag him back.
00:21:20Bone crunches ahead of us, and my focus flips to Dane, who sure still sections flyer toward the line as Aura stumbles backward, disarmed, bloodstreaming through the line.
00:21:27Through her fingers as she covers her nose.
00:21:29This ends now, Dane's shout echoes off the stone walls.
00:21:32We don't answer to deserters.
00:21:34Aura spits blood into the snow and straightens.
00:21:36You no longer speak for fourth wing, Atoz.
00:21:38You are nothing here.
00:21:40Dane takes the insult through the lift of his chin, and I crack open the door to Tane's power, welcoming the heat that floods my veins, warming my cold cramped muscles and exposed hands.
00:21:48Fourth wing, you and Faber steps out of the crowd near the steps.
00:21:51Prepare to defend your senior wing leader.
00:21:54Fuck me, Arak matters, drawing his sword as Redog is the same at my left.
00:21:58Weapons rise at the edges of my vision, but I keep my gaze locked on Aura and adjust my grip around my dagger.
00:22:03I may have some very mixed feelings when it comes to Dane, but there's no way under Amari's sky that I am going to let Aura harm any Aurasian rider, let alone my oldest friend.
00:22:11We answer to Atoz, Redog shouts down the line, pointing his sword in Faber's direction.
00:22:15And there's more of us than there are a few.
00:22:17Only in fourth wing, RS True announces, the leader of first wing moving to Faber's side.
00:22:22First wing stands strong, stands loyal to Nama.
00:22:25A chair rises from the left.
00:22:27Not sure I'd brag about being in the wing that produced Jack Barrow.
00:22:30Redog counters.
00:22:31Redog, re-hisses.
00:22:33I'm done, he promises if Dane shoots a glare his way.
00:22:36Really missing the professors right now, Rx is under his breath.
00:22:40Challenge Atoz, someone years from the left, and a new fear wraps its F fingers around my heart and squeezes.
00:22:45There's no single person in the courtyard with the authority to command us all.
00:22:48The only thing more dangerous than a quadrant full of arrogant killing machines is a leaderless quadrant, and if Dane accepts the challenge and, falls, an alliance with Coromir won't matter, we'll tear each other apart from within.
00:22:58Now would be a great time for Zayrin to lower his fucking shields.
00:23:02The Dark One cannot unite what he broke.
00:23:04Stop calling him that.
00:23:06You blame us for Barlow, but you're the ones who left.
00:23:08Aura motions at our side of the formation, displaying her berry of patches beneath the one that indicates her fire-wielding signet as she stalks toward Dane.
00:23:15Dane draws his dagger and drops it in the snow, facing Aura Renown.
00:23:19I'm not raising my blade against you, be inhuman.
00:23:22That's a, choice, Rx says quietly.
00:23:24He's going to talk her down.
00:23:26One by one, I flex my fingers along the hilt of my dagger, prepping my hand for movement as power humps within me.
00:23:31Yes, we left, Dane continues, his hands closing into fists.
00:23:35But we also returned.
00:23:37Aura reaches for her shoulder as if forgetting she already used and lost a dagger, but she doesn't draw the sword at her hip.
00:23:42Did it occur to any of you that they only attack because they knew we weren't at full strength?
00:23:46That your desertion allowed the wards to fall in the first place?
00:23:49Ouch!
00:23:50We chose true, Dane shouts back, away and bulging in his neck.
00:23:54We chose to defend the helpless.
00:23:55You chose to break the ride, fracture the quadrant, Aura counters, pointing her glove finger at Dane's chest as she approaches him with slow, methodical steps that elevate my pulse.
00:24:03And then you bring home the very enemy we've spent centuries fighting, the enemy that killed my own cousin in one of their raids.
00:24:08And you think we should welcome them into the heart of the kingdom they've been trained to destroy?
00:24:13The Navarians mutter in agreement.
00:24:15I think our boy is losing this one, Aura whiskers.
00:24:17He's good, but he's no reason.
00:24:20Zayden hadn't just led fourth wing, he'd commanded the respect, and fear, of the entire quadrant.
00:24:24My joke lynch is, but he isn't the good at any more, and the entirety of the raider's quadrant will only answer to one of its own.
00:24:30He can't unite what he broke.
00:24:32Zayden can't fix this, I'm a ma, mostly to myself.
00:24:35Fuck it, I hate when ten's right.
00:24:37Mercifully, he keeps silent.
00:24:39We need the flyers, Dane holds his ground.
00:24:42You need them, Aura's voice edges on bitterness as she takes another step toward Dane.
00:24:46We fought to save us glad.
00:24:47We were steadfast in our defense.
00:24:49We never waived.
00:24:50Another chorus of cheers resounds as she turns to the quadrant like a politician.
00:24:54He can't win the crowd.
00:24:55She's going to really challenge him, Aura quants, his gaze darting over the audience of dragons and griffins, and I certainly remember exactly who he is.
00:25:02Any chance you have an affinity for public speaking?
00:25:04I ask Varag, undoing the first button on my fly jacket is the heat bills.
00:25:08It certainly runs in your family.
00:25:10Was it the shunning of my birthright in favor of the high probability of death that gave me away?
00:25:14He responds, his tone dry.
00:25:16I take that as a no.
00:25:18What do you say, their strongest against our strongest?
00:25:21Aura taps her bloody hand over her heart.
00:25:23I'll make you a deal, wing leader.
00:25:24Defeat me, and your flyers live to see the morning.
00:25:26Fail to rise to the occasion, and we'll stay in this courtyard red.
00:25:29The Navarion's roar of approval ruttles my teeth.
00:25:32Dane isn't the strongest, and Rinna points out.
00:25:35Dane can take her in hand to hand.
00:25:36Nepotism isn't the only reason he earned his rank, and wielding isn't allowed in challenges.
00:25:41I watch every motion as Aura tugs at the fingers of her glove instead of reaching for another dagger or her sword.
00:25:45My stomach tenses, there's only one reason she'd need her hands bare.
00:25:49Fire trumps memory wielding every time.
00:25:52Aura gestures to the hard packed floor between them.
00:25:54Let the serve as a man.
00:25:55What would a combat master say?
00:25:57She asks the crowd.
00:25:58Begin.
00:25:59The whole of first film calls out.
00:26:01I'm not fighting you, Aura.
00:26:02Dane rolls.
00:26:03I'm fighting you.
00:26:04Aura fidgets with her glove, and I flip my dagger, holding it by the tip.
00:26:08Aura really turned coward.
00:26:09Just another rebel who needs to be Marcusic.
00:26:11Mark.
00:26:12Rage narrows my eyes.
00:26:13Dane isn't as strongest.
00:26:15And Rinna repeats, and this time, I get the point.
00:26:17I am.
00:26:18Aura whips off her glove and flares her hand.
00:26:20I throw, releasing my dagger a second before flame erupts from her palm.
00:26:24The steel cleans her glove to the wooden support of the daze.
00:26:26Aura gasps, and the flame dies before it can touch Dane, her head tracking the loss of her glove before whipping toward me.
00:26:33Her eye is narrow.
00:26:34Soaring Gale.
00:26:35Violet.
00:26:36No.
00:26:36Dane protests.
00:26:38Rebel.
00:26:38Is so, outdated.
00:26:39We prefer the term, revolutionary.
00:26:41I inform Aura, taking a measured step in her direction and welcoming the crackle of sizzling power in my fingertips.
00:26:46And if you are going to wield, then it's me you'll be dealing with.
00:26:49Never turn your back on a rider.
00:26:51Major Affinra's Guide to the Rider's Forward, Unauthorized Edition.
00:26:55Chapter 6
00:26:55You dare, Aura turns to fully face me, yanking off her other glove.
00:27:00I dare, I lift my open palm skyward, and Gale speaks along my arms as I release a wave of power, forcing it upward and letting it go.
00:27:06Lightning splits the sky, flashing bright above our heads and branching outward into the clouds.
00:27:11Thunder follows instantly, so loud it shakes the masonry.
00:27:14The crowd quiets, and Aura's mouth hangs for a moment before she lowers her hands.
00:27:18You see, Dane's too honorable to wield in a challenge, but you'll find that my sense of morality has learned took way over.
00:27:24I retrieve another dagger and shake it in her direction.
00:27:26You lift your hand against him again, and the next one goes through it.
00:27:29He's the reason you are alive.
00:27:30The reason you are all alive.
00:27:32Power thrums through me, buzzing with readiness, and I sip my left hand into the pocket of my fly jacket and remove the conduit.
00:27:38Violet, Rhiannon wants off key from my right.
00:27:41Shush, it's more fun when she blows shit up, Redog whispers.
00:27:43I turn slightly and draw on lesser magic to allow my voice to carry to the Nubarean Riders while kicking an eye on Aura.
00:27:49Dave closed in, taking the situation from dangerous to lethal.
00:27:52The only reason you survived the attack is because we gained access to the knowledge that our purpose we get from us.
00:27:57We stole it, we translated it, we saved your ass.
00:27:59Warm streaks down my arm, the conduit beginning to hum.
00:28:02And yes, we expect you to recognize that we need this alliance to survive what's coming for us.
00:28:06You expect us to trust them.
00:28:08Caroline calls out.
00:28:09Aura retreats a step, eyeing my conduit.
00:28:11You have to, I answer, pushing against the heat that flushes my skin as power gathers within me again.
00:28:16But more importantly, you can.
00:28:18They fought by our side for months, even after we've spent centuries condemning their people to death because we are unwilling to share the one resource that could have saved them.
00:28:25We don't have to like each other, but we do have to trust each other, and we can't keep doing this, can't keep accepting needless.
00:28:30Casualties in the quadrant in the name of strengthening the wing, not been every single one of us is needed in this war.
00:28:37It's their war, or our challengers.
00:28:39Do you really believe we should beat in our wards, and injure our own people just to arm theirs?
00:28:43You choose Poromi over Nova.
00:28:44We can choose both.
00:28:45I slip my dagger back into place and free my hand to wield.
00:28:49Arak lifts his sword as Yuanfei becomes a little too close.
00:28:51The riders who came before us failed to protect the innocent just because they were on the other side of our border, are you?
00:28:57They lied and hid, they were the cards, but we don't have to be.
00:29:00We can choose to stand together and fight.
00:29:02Leadership is locked behind doors right now trying to forge a treaty.
00:29:05My gaze comes over the riders who stayed when we fled for Aratiya three months ago.
00:29:09But they're failing, just like every generation before us has failed, and if we do the same, I shake my head, fumbling for words.
00:29:15You've seen what's out there.
00:29:16Either this alliance begins right here with us, with our generation,
00:29:19or we will be the last dragon riders and griffon flyers on the continent.
00:29:22Sweat beads along the back of my neck, my temperature rising with every second I keep my power ready.
00:29:27Well, I ask.
00:29:28Silence falls, thick and heavy, but no one moves.
00:29:31Is this what you do when we give you a break from classes?
00:29:34Everyone turns toward the rotunda at the sound of Dibira's voice.
00:29:37The professor stands with her feet braced apart, flanked by Professor Zimiterio and Kaori.
00:29:41All three look in this straight need of a bath and a good night's rest.
00:29:44Thank you, Bunni.
00:29:45I force the Akai's daughter to tear and spa shut and notice steam rising from my hand before the conduit dims.
00:29:51Sorengale is right, Dibira shouts.
00:29:52There is every chance we will all meet Malik in the coming months,
00:29:55but you must decide if you'd rather die fighting each other or facing our shared enemy.
00:29:59She rocks back on her heels.
00:30:00Bow ahead and choose.
00:30:01We'll be.
00:30:02Die now or die later, what's the difference?
00:30:05Someone from second wing asks.
00:30:07Die now, and scribe will call your name in the morning.
00:30:10Omaterio shrugs.
00:30:10Choose to fight your common enemy, and there's a chance you'll live to graduate.
00:30:13Personally, he scratches his beard.
00:30:15I like our odds.
00:30:16The last time a shadow and lightning wheel do fought side by side, they managed
00:30:20to drive the Venen back into the Barrens for a few hundred years.
00:30:24We'll ya figure out how to do it again.
00:30:26I fumble the conduit and nearly drop it.
00:30:28Zeran and I are the first of our cygnets to live simultaneously since the Great War.
00:30:33Heads turn my way, and one by one, every weapon lowers.
00:30:36You do your dragons, and Gryphim's proud.
00:30:38Dibira nods.
00:30:39Vacation is over, your professors are returning in the next 24 hours, and if I were you, I
00:30:43concentrate on getting a good night's eve before Maitrioh here decides you should run
00:30:47the bondage just for fun.
00:30:48We are done waiting for the nobles.
00:30:50Battle brief is at 9 a.m.
00:30:51Chao, treaty or no treaty?
00:30:53She looks pointedly at our group.
00:30:55And that includes every cadet, no matter what color letters you prefer.
00:30:58You're released from whatever it was you thought you were doing here.
00:31:00The cadets disperse, passing by our professors as the three walk our way, and then the winched
00:31:05ones take to the sky.
00:31:06I can't help but note that the cadets are still separated between Noorians and Russians.
00:31:10At least no one's trying to kill each other.
00:31:12We keep our flyers back toward the days until the Noorians are gone, and then our squad brings
00:31:16up the rear.
00:31:17I can see it sometimes, Cat says, pulling up her hood as she walks ahead of me.
00:31:21Why he chose you, nice speech, took you long enough to step in, though.
00:31:25You're welcome, I muttered to her back, with the tiniest smile scars my lips.
00:31:29Never thought I'd yearn for a simple day of classes.
00:31:31Redo closed his arm over my shoulder as we walk.
00:31:34Maybe a good old session of parapet.
00:31:36I spot Zayden off to the side of the rotunda steps with Loulin, Brennan, and Mira, and my
00:31:39stomach flips.
00:31:40They must have news.
00:31:42Our class, we're trying to kill each other isn't exactly original, so one says, passing
00:31:45by as I saw the tensuk on Brennan's face.
00:31:48Guess it's not good news.
00:31:50Did you really just stand there and watch all that happen?
00:31:52He asks as our professor's approach.
00:31:54Yes, Davira wipes off her flight goggles, then stretches the little band behind her
00:31:58head.
00:31:59It was bound to happen at some point, and at least this was a controlled environment, she
00:32:02finishes over her shoulder.
00:32:04I feel so protected.
00:32:06Redo puts his hand over his heart.
00:32:07Nurtured, even, wouldn't you agree, Violet?
00:32:10You pretty much described how Violet was raised, Dane says, coming from behind us with
00:32:14Darak as a rest head inside with the remainder of the squad.
00:32:16He looks at me, thanks for sticking in, thought she was going to torch me there for a second.
00:32:21Thanks for coming without hesitation when I said we needed you.
00:32:24Our eyes need, and for a second, it hits me how different things might have been if
00:32:27he'd shown the same faith in me during my first year as he did today.
00:32:30Not different enough to change the way I feel about Zayden, though.
00:32:33Always will.
00:32:34He offers me a hint of a smile before turning toward the dormitory.
00:32:38When I look over to Zayden, I find him watching, his car eyebrow rising as his gaze jumps today
00:32:42and before finding mine again.
00:32:44My eye is narrow.
00:32:44Is that?
00:32:45No.
00:32:45It can't be jealousy.
00:32:46Can it?
00:32:47We need to speak with you as well, Arak, Brennan notes, looking like he's aged five years in
00:32:57the last few hours.
00:32:58He's not exactly standing close to Mira, either, causing my heart to sing.
00:33:02Redok's arm slides off my shoulders.
00:33:04Oh, come on, why does Arak get to stay?
00:33:06He's a first year.
00:33:08Do not make me drag you, Rie warns, holding up a single finger, and Redok acquiesces with
00:33:12a sigh, moving forward and leaving the six of us on the rotundestepth.
00:33:15Let's take this inside.
00:33:17Brennan surprises me by heading down the steps and cutting a diagonal path toward the academic
00:33:20wing.
00:33:22Moving to Zayden's side, I study the stern lines of his face as we follow Brennan, the
00:33:25others close behind us.
00:33:27Everything alright?
00:33:28I ask quietly, feeling his shield locked firmly in place.
00:33:30Are you alright?
00:33:31Good speech.
00:33:32He takes my hand, lacing my fingers.
00:33:35She was going to kill Dane.
00:33:36My voice drops to a whisper.
00:33:38They really do hate us.
00:33:39Doesn't change the fact that we are here, especially now that we've reached terms for
00:33:43the Rie to stay.
00:33:44Zayden catches the door before it can close behind Brennan, then holds it as I walk through,
00:33:47his fingers slipping from mine.
00:33:49That's good, Rie.
00:33:50I glance his way as we enter the deserted sparring gym.
00:33:53And you didn't answer my question.
00:33:55Talk to your brother first.
00:33:56He folds his arms when we reach the edge of the first row of mats, where Brennan waits.
00:34:00As the others join us, we form a loose circle.
00:34:03That doesn't bode well.
00:34:04Anxiety coils in my stomach like a snake-oised strike as I take in the older rider so my
00:34:08expressions across from us.
00:34:09Arak slides his hands into his pockets at my left.
00:34:12Let me guess.
00:34:12Haldane complicated negotiations.
00:34:15I fucking blanch.
00:34:16Your brother certainly didn't help.
00:34:18Luleen notes, scratching the bristles along the underside of his jaw.
00:34:21Haldane's here.
00:34:22I managed to ask.
00:34:24Rodan this morning with a company from the western guard.
00:34:26Arak shoots me a annoying look, which I return with a quick glare.
00:34:29Great.
00:34:29His temper is the last thing we need at the negotiating table.
00:34:32Mira studies Zayden and me intently, but she keeps quiet.
00:34:36Your secret is still safe.
00:34:37By the way, Luleen says to Arak, though you might consider putting your father out of his
00:34:40misery.
00:34:41He has half his personal guard searching for you.
00:34:44Shows how effective they are, don't you think?
00:34:46Arak grimaces sarcastically, so do your carry news.
00:34:48Or were you just gathered to hear a violet speech?
00:34:50His attention jumps from person to person, no doubt cataloging the tiniest details of every
00:34:54shift in expression as he has been raised to do.
00:34:56He's always been the most observant of his brothers.
00:34:58She was quite moving.
00:35:00We heard Brennan offers me a flash of a proud smile, and so, she'd be a great politician,
00:35:05Arak continues.
00:35:06Or a general, maybe, definitely nobility.
00:35:09With that speech, at least a duchess, Zayden shifts his weight, brushing his elbow against
00:35:13my shoulder.
00:35:14I shake my head, no thank you to, any of that.
00:35:17I have no love for politics, nor am I good at dealing with the scenario.
00:35:20I look around, okay, someone needs to start talking.
00:35:23Lieutenant Ryerson, a rider with a messenger sash interrupts, calling out from the doorway.
00:35:27Be right back.
00:35:29Zayden's hand skims my lower back as he answers the summons.
00:35:32Your mission was dispersed at the negotiating table today in hopes they would give us an
00:35:36extension, Brennan says, and given the participants at hand.
00:35:39That sake of anxiety strikes hard and true.
00:35:42Haldang, Arak guesses, his eminent green eyes narrowing slightly in speculation toward my
00:35:45brother.
00:35:46Haldang's going with her, isn't he?
00:35:48My jaw unhinges, then snaps shut at the apology filling Brennan's eyes.
00:35:51No fucking way, I shake my head, you cannot be serious, I refuse to even think about it.
00:35:57They're serious, Arak says without looking in my direction.
00:35:59Poromi would accept a sorengele without question, so if you need a royal capable of speaking for
00:36:03Neva, they must think you're headed to the Isle Kingdoms or not with.
00:36:06He tilts his head, studying the older riders.
00:36:08That about covered.
00:36:09I'm going to be sick.
00:36:11Why are you ill?
00:36:12Andrna asks.
00:36:13Haldang, ten muses slowly, and I swear I can feel his non-existent eyebrows rise.
00:36:18So, we kill him if he makes her uncomfortable, and Rana suggests.
00:36:22Problem solved.
00:36:23You cannot kill the heir to the throne, even though I've been tempted myself a time or two.
00:36:28You really are the wisest of them, aren't you?
00:36:30Lulon has a sad on a laugh.
00:36:31Our kingdom would have benefited from you being the Fistborn, your highness.
00:36:35It's Arak, he corrects, folding his arms.
00:36:37Is that why you wanted me here?
00:36:39To see if I denounce myself, since Haldang wants to bow be levanting off on dangerous missions.
00:36:43Make everyone feel good and cozy that there's still a spear.
00:36:45Perhaps, the Duke smiles at Arak.
00:36:49Admirable attempt, but I'm only here for my squad.
00:36:51I'll dismantle the family business before I rejoin it, Arak quips.
00:36:55Your prince doesn't want to play.
00:36:56Mira arches abroad, Lulon.
00:36:58Now, tell why with the rest, or I will.
00:37:01The comment reminds me, andrna's demands.
00:37:04Right, Lulon says as Zaylen returns, still stern-faced but now holding a rolled parchment
00:37:08as he fills the space at my side.
00:37:10The Duke pulls Andrna's list from his pocket.
00:37:11You already know point 2 is now in the hands of Captain Grady.
00:37:15But you want point 3.
00:37:16The scenario has agreed that all those who flew for Aritya will be welcomed back with
00:37:19a full pardon for their treason and sedition within the now negotiated accord with Aritya.
00:37:23He glances at Zaylen, which will be signed the morning once the scribe finished rafting it.
00:37:27Personally, I think you scared the shit out of them by threatening to leave yesterday,
00:37:30Violet.
00:37:31Good job.
00:37:31Point 4.
00:37:32Andrna will not submit for any examination.
00:37:35Because it was never going to happen anyway, she chimes in.
00:37:38And 5.
00:37:38She will be granted access to hunt in the king's forest whenever she pleases.
00:37:42That one was just for fun.
00:37:44You skipped the flies.
00:37:45I straighten my spine and look to my brother.
00:37:47Keeping them safe and our squad's intact is first on the list.
00:37:50I narrow my eyes.
00:37:51We only have two days left.
00:37:52And we gave you the solution.
00:37:54Brennan presses his lips into a flat line, and my stomach rolls.
00:37:58That particular matter didn't make it to Poromi's table.
00:38:00Llewellyn folds Andrna's list and puts it into the front pocket of his hunter green tunic.
00:38:04Your sister argued valiantly and displayed astonishing capability,
00:38:07with the same I am voted 6 to 1, and safety of Navarre's borders is not to be tampered with.
00:38:12Mira crosses her arms.
00:38:14Pickling heat rolls down Andrna's bond, and my hand fell, my nails biting into my palms.
00:38:18What about the alliance?
00:38:20Without it, the deal with Declis falls apart.
00:38:22It's failed, Llewellyn announces unemotionally, as if reading from the death roll.
00:38:26Because the flyers aren't safe here, I bite out every word at my brother.
00:38:30Because treaties like this take time, and we won't figure this out before their queen's
00:38:33deadline in two days.
00:38:34Brennan rubs his thumb along his chin.
00:38:36Flyer cadets will be safe in Aritya while we still have wards, and hopefully Queen Maria
00:38:40can force her nobles back to the table at a later date, Brennan promises, his shoulders
00:38:43sagging.
00:38:44Politics are complicated, fuck that, how can our nobles let them walk away without any lines,
00:38:49knowingly have the means to protect the flyers?
00:38:50We still have the means, and Arna reminds me, right, plan B, treason, guess that part
00:38:56chooses itself.
00:38:57When you put it that way, I force my shoulders to relax and my hands to fall peacefully at
00:39:01my sides.
00:39:02I guess it's back to the side of business as usual tomorrow, and I should prep for our
00:39:05mission, or as research is out of my control as the team members.
00:39:09Myra's eyes narrow in my direction, like she's the intrinsic in the room and not Zayden.
00:39:12Every resource, including the royal library, will be made available to you, Brennan promises.
00:39:18Oh good, because books will keep her safe.
00:39:20Meera shoots Brennan an icy loot.
00:39:22The right books will.
00:39:23Well, as soon as this has been, Arrak nods at me, then departs without another word.
00:39:28He'll come around, Llewellyn sighs, then turns to Zayden with a smile so proud it borders
00:39:32on teary.
00:39:33Enjoy your win, Zayden.
00:39:34Delaying the alliance is unfortunate, but we won.
00:39:37Your father would be proud.
00:39:38I highly doubt that.
00:39:39His tone is sharp.
00:39:41What?
00:39:41I reach, but his shoes are tighter than ever.
00:39:43Did he get his father's sword back?
00:39:45Why wouldn't he be happy about that?
00:39:47We'll leave you to tell her the good news.
00:39:49I really am sorry we couldn't make the alliance work.
00:39:51Brennan gives me an awkward, apolitetic smile, then heads out, taking Llewellyn and Meera with
00:39:55him.
00:39:56I wait until the door shuts behind her before I turn to Zayden.
00:39:59What did you win?
00:40:00Every muscle in his body seems to tense even more, if that's possible.
00:40:04I didn't win it, didn't even ask for it.
00:40:06I'm the last person.
00:40:07He shakes his head and stuffs the road waters into his breast pocket.
00:40:10Llewellyn and Lindell told them it was the price of keeping the right here, and Sainari
00:40:14gave in.
00:40:15That's how scared they are of losing their numbers.
00:40:17They actually agreed to give it back, and I wish they hadn't.
00:40:20Not now, not when I am like this.
00:40:22He points to his eyes as if they were still red, but I only see him.
00:40:25My father wouldn't be proud.
00:40:26He'd be horrified.
00:40:27Every word is short.
00:40:28Clip.
00:40:29I don't believe that.
00:40:30It's impossible not to be proud of him, nor to love him.
00:40:33You didn't know him.
00:40:34There was only one thing in this world he loved more than me.
00:40:37He looks away, and I start to rethink my assumption about this world.
00:40:41What did the king give you?
00:40:42Update wouldn't bury him like this.
00:40:43I've been trying to think of a way out of it for the last hour.
00:40:46The king sanctioned both Lindell and Llewellyn for their roles in hiding Aratia, just like
00:40:49they predicted this morning, so they're not options.
00:40:52And I can't reject the agreement, or everyone will know something is wrong.
00:40:55His tortured gaze finds mine, and my heart clenches.
00:40:58The only solution I can think of is you.
00:41:00You'll be the first sense when I lose the rest of what makes me, me.
00:41:03Slowly, he takes a windblown strand of my hair behind my ear.
00:41:06You won't.
00:41:07I have enough faith in him for the both of us.
00:41:09I will.
00:41:10This morning showed me it's just a matter of time and reason.
00:41:13He nods for the certainty that sours my stomach.
00:41:15It's not fair, and you might hate me for it later, but I need you to make me a promise.
00:41:19His warm hand tucks the back of my neck as his eyes search mine.
00:41:22Swear you'll sound the alarm if I go too far, but you'll keep it safe, even if it's from
00:41:26me.
00:41:27What?
00:41:28I start, but the gym door opens, and I look over my shoulder to see Garrick waving a road
00:41:31pathway.
00:41:33The Earl of Llewellyn said you'd be in here.
00:41:35Orders aren't optional, reason, even for nobility.
00:41:37We need to go.
00:41:39Promise me, Zayden saves, stroking his thumb under my ear and completely ignoring his best
00:41:42friend.
00:41:43You were leaving.
00:41:44I swing my gaze back to Zayden's, realizing that's why the messenger had tracked him down.
00:41:48Now, he leans in, blocking out the rest of the world.
00:41:51Promise me, Violet, please.
00:41:53He'll never go too far, never lose his soul, so I nod.
00:41:57I promise.
00:41:57Zayden's eyes wide shut for a heartbeat, and blatant relief shines from their depths when
00:42:01he opens them.
00:42:03I know you can hear me.
00:42:04Garrick raises his voice.
00:42:05Let's go.
00:42:06I love you.
00:42:07Zayden kisses me hard and fast, and it's over before I can even process it's actually happened.
00:42:11I love you, too.
00:42:13I grab his hand as he withdraws.
00:42:15Tell me what the king gave you.
00:42:16He takes a deep breath.
00:42:17He gave me back my title and deceit in the scenario.
00:42:21Holy shit, my lips part.
00:42:23Not just Aritya, either, he gave me Tyrande, Zayden says slowly, like he can't believe it,
00:42:27either.
00:42:28And he doesn't want it.
00:42:30My chest flenches, Zayden.
00:42:32Don't wait up.
00:42:33He presses a kiss to the inside of my wrist, then strikes toward Garrick.
00:42:36I'll be back by 8 a.m., sign that accord, he calls back over his shoulder.
00:42:40Try to stay out of trouble while I'm born.
00:42:42Be careful, he's the Duke of Tyrande.
00:42:44This is so much bigger than how I feel about him now.
00:42:47There's an entire province depending on him.
00:42:49I need to find a cure, and that means saving the Alliance tonight, even if it means I'll
00:42:52be a traitor by morning.
00:42:54If I'm to be God-marshal for helping Braxton defend his people, then I shall welcome the
00:42:58trial.
00:42:58All who channel from Dragon and Griffin alike should flourish under the wards, and now Aritya
00:43:02will be that haven should one of the others ever return.

00:43:09Chapter 7
00:43:11I want to be on the quest squad.
00:43:13Widowquist is at my side as we cross the enclosed bridge to the heli-quadron, my heart strangely
00:43:17steady considering what we're about to do.
00:43:20For the last time, there's no quest squad.
00:43:22Rie hisses at him as the bells announce Midnight's arrival, muffling the sound of fristy
00:43:25hinges as Imogen opens the door head of us.
00:43:27There's a very small, very skilled group going with Violet to find Andrina's kind.
00:43:31Sounds like a quest squad to me.
00:43:33Given Ryerson's recent promotion, he should be able to pull some strings with Grady, right?
00:43:37Rie.

00:44:00inside. The tunnel is empty, all the beds have been cleared since yesterday morning's attack,
00:44:05which feels like a decade ago. We find the darkest stretch between mage lights and lean
00:44:08against the wall just out of sight of the infirmary doors. Now we wait, Reema tears,
00:44:13drumming her fingertips on her folded arms. It isn't long before we squad Bodhi and Quinn
00:44:17making their way toward us from the opposite direction with Marin in their way, low lines
00:44:21etched on her face. You ready to do this? Bodhi asks me, kicking his voice down as he reaches us.
00:44:26You really want to do this? No second thoughts, I assure him, lifting my chin,
00:44:31whatever it takes. He nods and glances over our party. Everyone know their assignment.
00:44:36I don't, Marin whispers, looking at us like we've lost our minds. Is this some kind of hazing ritual?
00:44:41It's best to don't know until we need you. I pull the vial of concentrated, purple valerian
00:44:45rooting to from my left pocket. It's for your own safety and plausible deniability that you trust us.
00:44:50For now, just stay here with Imogen. Marin glances at each of us as if deciding, then nods.
00:44:57Then let's go, Bodhi gestures toward the infirmary, and I take the lead.
00:45:00Gods, I hope I've thought of everything. If one thing goes wrong, we're fucked.
00:45:04The five of us approach the infirmary doors, and I knock lightly four times.
00:45:08He's be here. Remind me how you know this guy, Bodhi whispers.
00:45:12I saved his life during navigation last year, I answer, then hold my breath as the right door
00:45:16opens silently. Dyer pops his head out, his brown eyes twinkling as he smiles.
00:45:21I did everything you ask. Come on in, he holds the door open, and we all sit inside as quietly
00:45:25as possible. Thank you for taking the extra shift on quick notice and helping us. I hand
00:45:30them the vial. Here's another dose in case you need it. The other healers have to stay
00:45:34asleep until we bring him back. Understood, he takes the vial, but you know I can't do anything
00:45:39if someone comes out of the critical care chamber. It's a risk we have to take. We leave him standing
00:45:44watch at the door and silently make our way down the road to Sawyer's Bay.
00:45:47Mage lights casting multiple shadows as we passed sleeping injured. Sawyer's sitting upright
00:45:51but doesn't say a word as we pile into his brightly lit bay, just lifts his eyebrows and sets
00:45:55down his pen and parchment on the bedside table. Bodhi closes the curtains and throws out a line
00:46:00of blow energy that encapsulates us in a bubble. Sound shield is active. You're feeling up to
00:46:04a troop across campus, he asks Sawyer. Pug1 earlier today is part of rehab. I can make it for
00:46:09the right reason. Sawyer nods. Is this why Dyer told me to stay awake? We need you to help
00:46:14with that plan we discussed. I take the seat near the head of his bed. Meera found a way,
00:46:18it involves altering the very material Arun is tempered into without destroying it.
00:46:21He leans back against his headboard. Then you're fucked, because I can't think of a single rock
00:46:26or earth wielder in our history. I'm pretty sure it's mostly iron, I say slowly. His mouth falls
00:46:32open and hangs there for a few seconds. No, he shakes his head, then looks to Rhi. Find someone else,
00:46:37there are at least a dozen metallurgists in our ranks. He folds his arms over his black shirt.
00:46:41Not here. Redok moves to the other side of the bed, then rummages through a set of drawers.
00:46:45They're all stationed on the border with just about every other rider we have right now.
00:46:49Then wait for them, Sawyer argues. I'm, I'm not good enough for something like that.
00:46:53You have to be, Rhi sits at the foot of his bed. Since he won't even, he shoves his hand through his
00:46:59unruly brown hair. I don't know if I can. You can, I lift my brows and look pointedly at the
00:47:04mud on his bedside table that bears his handprint. I'm not the rider you want for this, we, not sure I'm even a
00:47:10rider anymore. Wait for someone else. Waiting won't matter. Bodhi sees beside Rhi. Sawyer's
00:47:15shoulders sag. Leadership doesn't approve. I shake my head. If we don't do this tonight,
00:47:19the negotiations are done. Flyers will be escorted to Arathya tomorrow. They're going to tear our
00:47:24squad apart. Sawyer's gaze jumps from me, to Bodhi, to Rhi, as if hoping one of us will correct him.
00:47:29Not if you do something about it. Redok crosses Sawyer's uniform talk on the bed. Now, I love you like a
00:47:34brother, and I get that you lost your leg, and we respect how ever you were feeling about that,
00:47:38but you're still one of us. You're still a rider, with all the benefits and shit that come with
00:47:42wearing black. So with all the love in my heart, put your fucking uniform on, because we need you.
00:47:47Sawyer picks up his uniform and rubs his thumb over his metallurgy patch, then down across his eye and
00:47:51scored one. My heart counts out the long seconds it takes for him to nod. Someone hand me my crutches.
00:47:56A few minutes later, five of us walk out of the infirmary, including Sawyer.
00:48:01Where's Quinn? Marin asks, pushing off the wall, making sure no one notices he's missing both the
00:48:05answers. Good to see you dressed appropriately, Imogen says to Sawyer. It's a long way, including
00:48:10two sets of intentionally difficult stairs, so if you need help, we've got you.
00:48:14Sawyer glances down to where Redok tied up his empty pant leg to the knee. Noted, he sees with
00:48:19quiet determination. Let's go, we make our way up the sparrows steps into the main campus, then down the
00:48:23hallway to the northwest tread, narrowly missing one guard patrol in infantry blue by ducking into a heli
00:48:27classroom midway, and then another installer tunics by piling into the stairwell as they turn the corner.
00:48:32It's busy out here, Sawyer remarks between quick breaths, is back pressed against the stone wall.
00:48:36Sweat beats his forehead, and he's lost a little color. You good, I asked him as we near the three
00:48:41minute mark. He nods, and we keep going. Every noble on the continent is in residence, Marin notes.
00:48:47Maybe you should have done this with Jason. He would have been able to lend some shadow away.
00:48:51He's not exactly aware of what we're doing, I tell her his image and walks down a couple of steps in
00:48:55front of us. Any chance he shows up? I ask 10. They are out of range, he answers.
00:49:00He will not be your problem tonight. Give me 60 seconds to knock out the guards,
00:49:04then come down, image and orders, disappearing around the first floor.
00:49:08Do I get to know yet? Marin asks. No, Bodhi and Redok answer simultaneously.
00:49:14And how does the Empyrean feel about this? I tap my fingers on my thigh, counting out the seconds.
00:49:19You have the full support of the Russian ride. We will find out how the others feel in the morning.
00:49:23So we are begging forgiveness instead of asking permission. Understood, we start down the steps,
00:49:28Bodhi and me taking lead. Zayda is going to be pissed, I whisper so the others don't hear.
00:49:32Which is why you are going to be the one to tell him when we pull it off, he answers with a grimace.
00:49:37He won't kill you. We wind our way down, keeping a pace so I seem comfortable with,
00:49:41and my chest grows tightly with every step. There should only be two.
00:49:45Guards on tonight, which is absolutely no challenge for Imogen, but the anxiety doesn't let up until she comes
00:49:50into view, waiting for us on the bottom step with her arms folded.
00:49:53We have a slight problem, she says, her mouth tensing as she steps aside.
00:49:57I wasn't sure you'd want me knocking out this particular guard.
00:50:00Mira walks into the center of the chamber and tilts her head at me in an uncanny imitation of our
00:50:03mother. My stomach hits the floor. Shit, I'm utter. Shit is about right, Mira puts her hands on her hips.
00:50:10And to think, I figured I was overreacting when I dismissed the guards and took their place.
00:50:14How did you know? I meet her in the middle of the tunnel,
00:50:16noting that she stands between me and the entrance to the warthstone chamber.
00:50:20Because I knew you, she levels her withering look on me, then glances over my shoulder.
00:50:24You pulled the rider from his sickbed. I'm the one who gets to say how sick I am,
00:50:28so I count this from behind me. Right, she swings her attention back to me.
00:50:33You shouldn't do this. I lift my chin. Are you going to stop me?
00:50:36Her eyes narrow slightly. Can you be stopped? No, I shake my head.
00:50:40You were there when we gave our word that their flyers would be educated with the riders.
00:50:44If Neva wants us, then they take all of us. And you're willing to risk the warthstone
00:50:48mother gave her life to power to keep your word. She lifts her eyebrow. You're the one who told me
00:50:53this can be done. I said the question is the others move to stand beside me.
00:50:57Which is something I'll have to live with. She looks at each rider. You are all aware
00:51:00that if you fail, the warth could fall. And if we succeed, there's every chance we'll be charged
00:51:04for treason and executed by dragon. That's not happening, Tani shows me with low growl.
00:51:09I'm sorry, what? Marin looks down the line from the right. Relax, Imogen knocks her with an elbow.
00:51:14Your only job is to wield. You'll be clear of the rest. We know the risks, I tell Meera. If the
00:51:19wards fall, then it looks like there's a mass migration to Aratia, and I'm truly on a ticking
00:51:23clock to find. And then it's fine, but they won't, because you found the solution, and you're never
00:51:29wrong. So I'm asking you again, are you going to stop me? She sighs and drops her arms at her sides.
00:51:34No, but only because I know you'll just try again, and I might not be here to make sure it works next
00:51:38time. You have the best shot with both of us. She pivots on her heel and disappears through the
00:51:43entrance to the ward chamber. With both the keeping watch, the six of us make our way into the narrow
00:51:47passage. Marin and me holding Sawyer stretches as Rihanna and Redock shuffle sideways with Sawyer's
00:51:51way braced between them. Only when we enter the massive chamber housing our kingdom's wards don't
00:51:56do I fully comprehend what Meera had meant by us. This little venture tells me you've been hanging out
00:52:01with Jason too long, Brennan says, waiting beside Meera in front of the massive iron pillar and its
00:52:05eerie black flame. Guess this is now a family affair. The corners of my mouth rise. You're the one leading
00:52:10the revolution with him. Maybe you rubbed off on me. I keep my gaze on my siblings, ignoring everything
00:52:15else about the chamber in the name of self-preservation. And to think, you could have been wasted on the
00:52:20scrap quadrant. Here flashes a smile, but it falls quickly as he gets serious. Henrik, you're with Meera.
00:52:26She'll help you through the process. Flyer. Marin Xena, she corrects him. Greg, Xena, you're prepared
00:52:32to build whatever lesser magic you're most comfortable with. You're three, he points at Ray,
00:52:36Redock, and me, don't touch anything. And you, I ask. I'm here in case it all goes to shit.
00:52:42He glances back at the stone. Wouldn't be the first time I've mended it. I hand Sawyer his stretches,
00:52:47and all of us sit in one long line to begin the nail-biting process of waiting. The very future of this war
00:52:52will be determined in this room, just like it was a couple of weeks ago. I close my eyes to avoid the
00:52:56stone, but there's no blocking the scent of the chamber or the memory of my screams.
00:53:00I'll get to see him soon. Her voice fills my head, breaking through every barrier I've thrown
00:53:04in grief's way to keep from feeling it, and slicing into my heart like the rusty edge of a jagged brain.
00:53:08Live well. Wee, Rihanna wraps her arm around my shoulders.
00:53:12I couldn't stop her, I whisper, forcing my watery eyes open as soil lifts his hands on the left.
00:53:17She was right there, and I couldn't stop her.
00:53:19Your mother, she asks gently, I nod. I'm so very sorry, Violet, Rishi is quietly,
00:53:25laying her head on my shoulder. I'm not even sure if I miss her, admit in a broken whisper,
00:53:29or the chance we had it eventually, being something. Maybe not with you and your mom have, but something.
00:53:35You can feel both, she takes my hand in hers and squeezes, and my chest lightens as we watch
00:53:39a squad on the top line of runes differentiating Nevaar's war stone from a rushes bubbling outward.
00:53:43It's working. Both her heads swivel right, toward Marin, and Flyer stares down at the small rock in her
00:53:48palm, then shakes her head. Well, that's disappointing. On to the next, Meera orders.
00:53:53Kind of wondering what protection we just took off, Redok mumbles as soil lifts his hands again,
00:53:57sitting to our left. Soil's arms begin to shake, and I continue squeezing Rih's hand.
00:54:03Maybe we pushed him too hard, I whisper to her.
00:54:05The next line on the stone bulges outward, then splits for a terrifying heartbeat before
00:54:09melted metal oozes from the wound. Oh, crap!
00:54:11Gumblin, Brennan barks as Redok throws up his hands, hurtling a ball of ice toward the stone.
00:54:16It makes contact with his, and Redok holds it there, steam bursts fly with, then fizzles and dies.
00:54:21Maybe this wasn't such a great idea, he starts. Hey, everyone, Marin says.
00:54:26I whip my head in her direction so fast Throne spins and find the stone dwelling above her hand.
00:54:30My breath rushes out, taking the form of a relieved laugh.
00:54:33Meera, Brennan asks. My sister is already walking toward the war stone,
00:54:37her hands played open. They're still intact. We need to be sure that Barlow is still contained,
00:54:42seeing as he is our only test subject, but I'm 99% sure the protections against Dark wielders are
00:54:46still in place. We did it, Redok bounces to his feet, throwing his fists in the air.
00:54:51Fuck yes, Soil, fuck you, Cenarium, the flyest in wield. They can stay with their squads.
00:54:57I grin like a kid. In 8 hours, the accord for the riot to stay will be signed, and we'll be whole.
00:55:02What now? Marin catches the rock. Now we stand trial for treason,
00:55:06Soil manages between built and breadth. But when our eyes meet, he is smiling just like I am.
00:55:11No, we won't. My smile widens. Marin, I need you to listen to me very carefully.
00:55:16The next morning, my heart races and the battle brief room buzzes with a mixture of excitement,
00:55:20trepidation, and outright fear as we take our seats. Ria and Redok claim the spots to my right,
00:55:25while Marin holds her seat empty for Cat between her and Trader to my left.
00:55:28Keep an eye on him, Ria orders Arak as he escorts Kari and the other F's tears down
00:55:32steps at the edge of the room.
00:55:33Arak nods, and I notice Baylor and Lynx covering their backs while Sloan and Ovalin lead the way,
00:55:38keeping Kay protected at every angle. I've never done this without a notebook.
00:55:42I brush the dust off the desktop in front of me as Cat works her way down a row.
00:55:46I'm sure our things will be sent, Ria says. At least I hope they will.
00:55:49Guess it depends on how the assembly takes the news that Reason didn't heed their wishes
00:55:53for the riot to return. He doesn't have to heed their wishes.
00:55:56Cat slides into the seat next to Marin and pulls her braid over her shoulder.
00:55:59He's not just the heir to Aritya anymore. He's the Duke of Tarenda as of 8 this morning,
00:56:03according to my uncle.
00:56:05Thank you, Amari, it's signed. I shift my weight,
00:56:08looking for a position that takes a little pressure off my lower back,
00:56:11and breathe deeply to try and slow my heart rate.
00:56:13You all right, Ria asks, her eyes narrowing on a group out of Nabar's fourth wing as they fill the seats
00:56:17ahead of us. Fine, I roll my neck, just didn't get enough sleep last night and now I'm paying for it.
00:56:23Because I took my fucking pen, the second ear ahead of her seeds, lurching over the seat of the girl
00:56:28next to him. You always take it, and I've had it. He snatches the pen and settles back into his seat.
00:56:33I shoot a look at Cat's smug face. Don't, what, I was just testing things out.
00:56:37She smithers the smug, you said we couldn't tell anyone, not that we couldn't play.
00:56:41Marin Snod laughs, and I can't help but fight my own smile. At least she's not fucking with me,
00:56:46and the Novarians do kind of deserve it. Welcome to Battle Brief,
00:56:49Davira announces as she descends the steps to our left, and the room falls quiet.
00:56:53I understand you've been led by Colonel Markham in my absence, but that ends today.
00:56:57She reaches a raised stage at the base of the room and leans against the table.
00:57:00Even if we only have one day with our flyer colleagues, we will be proceeding.
00:57:04Professor Davira, the Auburn head professor of the flyers, Kendra, all but runs down the steps,
00:57:08and asks what she has quick glances as she conveys something to Davira behind her hand.
00:57:12Excellent, Davira says, smiling wide. For everyone who doesn't know,
00:57:16this is Professor Kendra, and she'll be leading Battle Brief with me from now on,
00:57:20given the news that our nobles are back in active negotiation for an alliance.
00:57:23A row of approval overpowers the desprended Navarians.
00:57:26When did you tell your uncle? I asked Cat.
00:57:29About 20 minutes ago, just like you asked, she answers.
00:57:32He works fast. Which means we have a matter of minutes.
00:57:35I drum my fingers on the desk and stare up at the inaccurate map of Navarre.
00:57:38Everything's about to change.
00:57:40With that in mind, Davira raises her voice, and we quiet down, let's discuss structure.
00:57:45To keep it easy, you stay where you have always been.
00:57:47If you find it awkward to serve in a squad with those who made a different choice this fall,
00:57:51then feel free to lodge a campaign with Malik.
00:57:53That's not fair, a third year yells out behind us.
00:57:56With the addition of the flyers, third and fourth wings are considerably larger,
00:57:59which gives them an advantage during war games.
00:58:02Yes, Davira tilts her head, get over it, we are not playing games anymore,
00:58:06we are preparing you for war. Do you think they forgot what happened two weeks ago?
00:58:10Redog whispers.
00:58:11I think it's possible they forgot what they had for breakfast, Lee replies.
00:58:14First and second wings will only be smaller until the rest of the flyer cadets arrive from
00:58:18signals and Davira continues. At which time you will welcome them?
00:58:22Fuck, the guy ahead before sinks lower in his chair.
00:58:25Next issue, we have too many wingletists among us, Davira continues, and I glance over my shoulder
00:58:30Dane, who stiffens in his seat a few rows back with the third years.
00:58:33It has been determined that leadership shall align with the wing's population.
00:58:36She lifts her eyebrows. Therefore, I rest through, you retain leadership of first wing,
00:58:40or a be in heaven retained second wing, while third wing remains with life stilling,
00:58:43and fourth wing will be led by the natives. Thank gods.
00:58:47The room explodes in applause and shouts of disagreement.
00:58:50This matter is not up for discussion. Davira's magically amplified voice shakes the desktop,
00:58:54quieting the room before she continues. If you are unsure who you report to or if you are still
00:58:58in command, a full list of great leadership will be posted in comments this afternoon.
00:59:02The briefing room door flies open and slams into the wall so hard I hear stonecrack as we all turn
00:59:06to face it into the commotion. While it's our angle, Penelato shouts from the doorway,
00:59:11his face a mortal shade of red as his narrowed eyes search the briefing room.
00:59:14Here, bracing my hands on the edges of my seat to fight a sudden wave of busyness,
00:59:18I rise to stand as four riders follow Eto's in.
00:59:21We, Rhiannon whispers. No one say a damn thing, I reply under my breath. I'll be fine.
00:59:26You are hereby charged with high treason against the kingdom of Nava. Maybe not.
00:59:31While many preach royalty to hedongue above all others, especially in Kaldir province,
00:59:35I find that favoring Zinal has universal appeal. Everyone wants wisdom but needs luck.
00:59:39Major O'Reilly's Guide to Appeasing the Gods, 2nd Edition
00:59:43Chapter 8
00:59:44Being arrested for treason doesn't exactly come as a shock,
00:59:47with Penelato's delivering the accusation as a blow I didn't see coming.
00:59:50Dad, Dane stands. Eto's head swivels toward Dane, and his mouth twists in toast there.
00:59:56I have no son. I gasp, and heard flashes across Dane's face before he cools his features and
01:00:01straightens his shoulders. As the pets are engaged in glitter.
01:00:04Request tonight, Colonel Eto's snaps. We can't just sit here, the dog argues quietly.
01:00:09You can and you will. I make my way down the row and glance up at Dane. I'm alright.
01:00:14You're far from alright, Eto's growls. The world rocks beneath my feet,
01:00:18and I curse my lack of sleep as I climb the steps to Eto's and 4 leftenants posted at his side.
01:00:22One of the women gestures toward the door, and I hold my head high as I walk by Eto's,
01:00:26somehow managing not to vomit when I see his rank has been raised to general.
01:00:30Eto's keep space at my side in the hallway. You are as good as dead for what you've done.
01:00:34I will only speak to the scenario. Good thing they gathered. It will make for a quick trial.
01:00:38After a silent procession through the quadrant and into the main campus, Eto's escorts me past a
01:00:42barrage of guards and cadets from other quadrants and into the great hall, entering the room just
01:00:46ahead of me. I have brought the traitor. He steps aside to reveal the long table set for
01:00:50negotiations to resume. The members of the scenario sit to the left side again,
01:00:54all dazzling in their choice of clothing this morning, with the exception of the one in rider
01:00:57black. Zarin turns in his seat at the end of the table and lifts his far-browled shadows brush
01:01:02across my mind. What happened to not getting into trouble? I never promised that. I hold his gaze,
01:01:07noting the circles under his eyes. You look tired. Just what every man wants to hear from the person he
01:01:12loves. He drums his fingers on the table, drawing my attention to a scrap of fabric in front of him,
01:01:17my lightning wheel to patch. I've decided I am done not knowing what you have to. Good choice.
01:01:22You really fucked with the wards. Someone once told me the right way isn't the only way.
01:01:26I use his own words from my first year against him, and his mouth tightens.
01:01:30As you can see, we have the evidence we need to place here at the stone, Eto's declares as he reaches
01:01:34the table. I ask that the scenario quickly pass judgment. He glances at Zayden, unless
01:01:38in US addition needs to recuse himself for his proximity to the traitor. Remove yourself if
01:01:43you can't be silent, Eto's. The Duke of Kaldir leans back in his chair and runs a hand over his
01:01:47short blonde beard. You have no poor view here. Eto's stiffens at my side, then retreats with
01:01:53the other riders, leaving me to face the scenario. Do you have a plan, violence? Zayden asks, and
01:01:58door muscle in his jaw flexes, the shadows in the room stapled. I'm assuming so, since dispatcher
01:02:03scenes look uniquid. Has anyone reported if the capabilities of the wards were damaged beyond
01:02:07allowing the flyers to wield? The Duke of Kaldir asks. Did you sign the accord for the riot stay?
01:02:13I asked Zayden just to be sure. They're intact against dark wielders. Zayden's fingers still,
01:02:17I wouldn't be sitting here if I hadn't. Then I have a perfect plan. How would you know,
01:02:22the Duchess of Moraine turns in her seat. Because I would know, Zayden replies to me alone. We haven't
01:02:27been swarmed, and Valo remains in our interrogation chamber. The wards are holding, he tilts his head
01:02:32and gives me the same look of anticipation he does when we step on the mat to spar. I'm eager for the show.
01:02:36I'll save everyone the fuss of organizing a trial and execution. I point to the patch I
01:02:41cut off my uniform last night. That's mine, I was the one who orchestrated altering the
01:02:45wards stone. I'm the reason that the flyers can wield. And that you now have a clear path
01:02:50to negotiate an alliance. You're welcome. The confession is met with six pairs of raised
01:02:54eyebrows and one sexy Asian smug. Guess we're not going for subtlety. No time for subtlety,
01:02:59and no evidence to convict anyone else in case it went awry. I, the Duchess of Moraine looks to her
01:03:05cares, her giant ruby earrings smacking her golden brown jawline as she swings her head back and
01:03:08forth. What do we even do with that? Nothing, Zayden answers, watching me like I am the only one in
01:03:14the room. Cadets Orenge, and whomever she acted with, committed the crime last night, and as of
01:03:18this morning, every single one of you and our king signed their pardons. I nod. Brilliant, reckless
01:03:23woman, his gaze heats, and I fight her smile. So there's nothing we can do. The Duchess of El
01:03:28Sun leans forward, her long round dress is brushing the table. She alters our defenses and then, what,
01:03:33goes back to class. It would seem so, the Duke of Caldea nods slowly. Seems the young woman pulled
01:03:38off quite defeat, a new voice says. I glance to my right, then do a double take at the woman standing
01:03:43in the north doorway of the hall. The silver of her intricate, armored breastplate air flashes in
01:03:47the morning light as she walks forward, her smile crinkling the light bronze till the edges of her dark
01:03:51eyes. She wears a pair of scarlet breeches with a short sword sheathed at her hip and a sparkling tiara
01:03:55atop her righteous curls, its delicacy is striking contrast to her weaponry. Queen Maria. Your
01:04:00majesty, I bow my head like my father taught me. Good at Sorengev, she says, and I look up to find
01:04:05him your feet away. I've heard much about the continent's only lightning-builder, and I am
01:04:09pleased to see the compliments were not spoken in hyperbole. She glances sideways at the scenarium.
01:04:13I assume she's free to return to her duties, as surely your king will arrive at any minute to continue
01:04:17our negotiations. There's not a thing we can do to her. Zayden pockets my patch, and the others
01:04:22slowly agree, four of them with more than a little anger in their eyes. Excellent! Queen Maria offers
01:04:27the scenarium a smile, then pulls me aside and lowers her voice. Why can't Tikira spoke of the
01:04:31deal you mean? You truly risked your king's wrath, your kingdom's defenses, or to keep my
01:04:36f liars here? Yes, my stomach clenches, it was the right thing to do. And in return, you only ask for
01:04:42unfettered access to his library. She studies me closely, but I hold her gaze. It's the best on the
01:04:47continent and our best hope for any historical record of how we defeated the villains centuries
01:04:51ago. And how we can cure them. Tell me you didn't do this for me. Zayden's chair creaks against the
01:04:56stone floor. I thought we promised never till I take each other. You endangered yourself,
01:05:01the stone titans. And I have no regrets. The sooner he gets it through his head that I'll do anything in
01:05:06my power to cure him, easier this will be on both of us. Fascinating, the queen's smile warms,
01:05:11but his is not the best. Mine is, I have thousands upon thousands of volumes secured in my summer home,
01:05:16and you are now welcome to any and all of them. I'll have my stewards send you a full catalog,
01:05:20though I warn you, we have yet to come across any such historical reckon.
01:05:23Thank you, hope fills my chest. If I don't find it, Jason you will. She nods once,
01:05:28then heads toward the table, effectively dismissing me. I quickly take my leave,
01:05:31escaping before King Tori, or Haldang, can appear. This discussion isn't over. Zayden
01:05:36warns as I rush into the hallway, nearly taking out Rian Redock in the process. But it is for now.
01:05:41I catch my balance if the door slams behind me. What are you doing here?
01:05:45Every second year in our squad seems to have pushed their way through the guards.
01:05:49We were kind of worried they'd haul you behind the school and turn you to ash.
01:05:52Redock rubs his hand over the tattoo of the dragon on the side of his neck.
01:05:56I'm fine, anything we did up until this morning has been pardoned.
01:05:59Deadly skip the rest of battle brief. There wasn't much to brief us on,
01:06:02since information is coming in from the border at a trickle. One active combat zone that they know of.
01:06:07Three pauses, her eyes flying wide. We. You will face consequences.
01:06:11Atoz roars from the left and I pivot, putting myself between him and my friends as he charges down the thick.
01:06:17Red purple to dust, anger rises, swift and strong, bringing power rushing to the surface of my skin.
01:06:22Not from you she won't. Brennan steps through the line of guards directly in front of me and shakes his head.
01:06:27You, Atoz recoils, this whole time. Me, Brennan nods, and I move to his side.
01:06:32You lost, my fingers brush the hilt of the dagger at my thigh as I glare up at the man I'd once
01:06:37considered a role model. You tried to kill us at a turbine, sent assassins after me in the fall,
01:06:41and even sick varish on me, and I am still here. You lost, we are pardoned, we are here.
01:06:46And yet I am the one the king appointed to take over as the mundane general of Biscayle,
01:06:50he gets used to the busy hall around us, so maybe it's you who has actually lost, the dead sore angel.
01:06:54My heart gallops, the edges of my vision turn dark, and I wobble.
01:06:58No, anyone but him, anyone, I shake my head as Brennan grasps the fistful of fabric at the back
01:07:02of my uniform, steadying me. You are unfit to sit at her desk, Brennan snaps.
01:07:07But here I am, he stands a bit taller. The scenario may abide by the pardon,
01:07:11but I assure you that you will not get away with altering his throne,
01:07:13none of us fully understand, with endangering our kingdom.
01:07:17But here I am, I reply softly, and be quickly replacing sure.
01:07:20Your threats are just threats. I am no longer the scared first year,
01:07:23unsure if I'd survive threshold or be capable of wielding.
01:07:26I take a single step in his direction.
01:07:27One of my dragons is among the most powerful on the continent, and the other is the rarest.
01:07:32I didn't realize it last year or even a few months ago, but I do now, you can't afford to kill me.
01:07:37His face, so like Dain's, puts into a skull.
01:07:40You can't afford to lose either of my dragons, let alone my signet,
01:07:43and you shows Malik can't afford to lose left in end reacence, or should I call him the Duke of Trinda.
01:07:47I hold out both arms at my sides, exposing my torso.
01:07:50Do your worst, but we both know I am now beyond your reach, general.
01:07:53Slowly, I let my arms fall. Do my worst,
01:07:57heaving breath slays and lower his shoulders as he looks to Brennan, then behind him.
01:08:00I know exactly where to strike in order to bring you to heel, cadet.
01:08:03Your siblings may be out of my chain of command, but your friends are not.
01:08:07My stomach dips.
01:08:08Your second ears seem pretty loyal to one another.
01:08:11He drags his gaze back to mine.
01:08:13They'll pay each and every time you disobey an order or step out of line, starting now.
01:08:17His head ticks as he stares past me.
01:08:18You want to play with matters of war, then you won't mind serving on the front.
01:08:22He glances a tree.
01:08:23Squad leader, every second ear under your command is hereby ordered for two days of
01:08:26duty at the outpost of Samara, to begin tomorrow morning.
01:08:29A crew smile curses his mouth as he addresses Mei.
01:08:31The fighting there is, rather intense, but surely your signet will keep your squadmates alive,
01:08:35and two days should get you back before your dragon fears the loss of his mate.
01:08:39Tomorrow morning, Mei looks bad, but it's at least an 18 hour air flight for Griffin,
01:08:43and they'll need breaks.
01:08:44It's more like 20 hours total, and they'll be exhausted by the time we get there.
01:08:48Then I guess you'd better get going.
01:08:50I hope to see you all return, in time.
01:08:52Calling to rats into active service in times of war may only be authorized by the commanding
01:08:56General Obiscail.
01:08:58Article 8, Section 1 at Dragon Rider's Codex
01:09:01Chapter 9
01:09:0322 hours later, the six officer quote to Lieutenant Colonel Degan C in Samara's courtyard,
01:09:07weary high and swaying with bondy prideness.
01:09:09We are not the only ones exhausted.
01:09:11The left hand colonel has definitely seen easier days.
01:09:13His cheeks are gaunt, and right birdcaged side of his leg.
01:09:17The fortress should feel familiar thanks to how many times I visited Zayden while he was
01:09:20stationed here in the fall, but the scene around us makes the place nearly unrecognizable.
01:09:24The western wall looks like a dragon crashed through it, demolishing nearly a quarter of
01:09:27the structure, and wounded in various states of distress line what's left as halos and
01:09:31bloody smokes move between them.
01:09:33Not a dragon, and then her corrects me, or why when?
01:09:36We flew over what remained of their burned bones a few fields away.
01:09:39Try to get some rest, I tell her.
01:09:41I'm the only one who slept on the way here, she argues.
01:09:44And this thing itches.
01:09:45Leave your harness on, there's no telling how quickly we might be forced to leave.
01:09:49I'm not wearing this when we find my family, she grumbles.
01:09:52Then fly father, Tane growls.
01:09:54Some officer trying to sleep.
01:09:56Lieutenant Colonel Degan C finishes reading the orders he carried, then looks up at us over the paper.
01:10:01They really give command of this back to her toes.
01:10:03Yes, sir, Rhi holds her shoulder straight, which is more than I can say for the rest of us.
01:10:08Captain Marin look like they've been through a hurricane, and Peter can't quit yearning.
01:10:12Same goes for a dog, and after spending all night in the saddle, I'm all but leaning on him to keep
01:10:16upright.
01:10:17Every muscle in my body hurts, my hips are screaming, and my head pounds in time with my heartbeat.
01:10:22And he and more particle eight to send me cadets.
01:10:24Degan C glances down a line, his gazing ring on the flyers.
01:10:28Yes, sir, Rhi nods.
01:10:30Wonderful, well, his intel is old.
01:10:32Degan C crumbles the orders into a ball.
01:10:34Fighting ended yesterday, and even if it hadn't, I'm not apt to send Terex into battle.
01:10:38He points to the gaping hole in the fortress.
01:10:40The biggest wave and crash through as the wards came back up, but once our perimeter fell,
01:10:43Vinin didn't need magic to get inside the coast anyway.
01:10:46Nearly lost our power supply, killing them off.
01:10:48We managed to repel them across the border, but the friend is just over the hill.
01:10:52His gaze rifts toward the flyers.
01:10:53The casualties are far worse beyond the wards.
01:10:55They always are, Cat comments.
01:10:58Has Newhall been affected?
01:10:59Maren's face draws tight.
01:11:00It's a small village on the Stonewater River about Hafen.
01:11:03I know where Newhall is, Degan C interrupts, clearly ready to be done with us.
01:11:07As of this morning's report, it remains standing.
01:11:10Maren's shoulders sag, and Cat wraps her arm around her.
01:11:13What about Poromish civilians?
01:11:14Traitor asks.
01:11:15Are you?
01:11:15He flinches, we offering them refuge.
01:11:18Degan C slowly shakes his head.
01:11:19We're in the straight waters not to allow anyone in unless something in negotiations changes,
01:11:23but we crossed the border and fought with you people up until the Horde departed yesterday.
01:11:27You have our gratitude, Cat says.
01:11:29Not everyone would do the same.
01:11:31He nods.
01:11:31For transparency, don't expect the others to be friendly, especially among the writers.
01:11:35This potential alliance isn't overly popular.
01:11:38Left in Infernal Degan C turns his attention to me.
01:11:40We were all grieved to hear of the loss of your mother.
01:11:42She was an outstanding commander.
01:11:44Thank you, she prided herself on it.
01:11:46I had just the straps of my pack on my shoulders to give my hand something to do.
01:11:50He nods.
01:11:51Do me a favor and ask that dragon of yours to stay out of sight.
01:11:54You are both formidable weapons, but you are also a giant target.
01:11:57The enemy may see this as their opportunity to attack en masse and dispatch you both from our ranks,
01:12:01and we can't afford to draw more daggers from the armory if we want to keep the wards in place.
01:12:05Not much we can do if he's already been spotted, but let's avoid additional opportunities.
01:12:10Yes, sir, I respond.
01:12:12I agree only as a matter of your safety.
01:12:14Ten matters, adding something about the insolence of humans.
01:12:17Left in Infernal, a rider in the steel at his shouts from the gate.
01:12:20We need you.
01:12:21Degan C bobs his head at the rider, then looks back at us.
01:12:24Look, I don't really care what you did to piss off atos.
01:12:27I'm too busy fighting a war to discipline cadets.
01:12:29He gestures to do mess around us.
01:12:31So, find whatever space you can and rack out.
01:12:33Get some rest, then make yourselves useful wherever you see fit.
01:12:36There's a small but noticeable limp in his stride as he leaves us, heading for the gate.
01:12:39We're left facing more than a few questionable stares from passing soldiers and riders,
01:12:44some downright hostile.
01:12:45How are we supposed to sleep knowing most of these riders would happily put knives in our backs?
01:12:49Marin asks.
01:12:51We can take watches, Peter suggests, pulling a piece of fiddle fluff from his light brown hair.
01:12:55Once I get some sleep, I'll offer to help the healers, too.
01:12:58If they'll accept it, Cat roars, crossing her arms when a captain in rider black bears are
01:13:03away from across the bay.
01:13:04They'd probably put a knife in your back in gratitude.
01:13:07While it re-glances my way, you know the outpost better than any of us.
01:13:11My gaze slides toward the southwestern turret, and a tight smile tugs at my lips.
01:13:15Even hundreds of miles away, he's still taking care of me and doesn't even know it.
01:13:19I know where we'll be safe.
01:13:21It can find it, panic seizes my heart as I throw items from the wooden chest at the foot of
01:13:24my four-poster bed, growing more and more desperate with each minute it passes.
01:13:28It has to be here.
01:13:30Heat scorches the side of my face as blue flames burst through the window of my chamber,
01:13:33and a glass knocks me backward.
01:13:35I crash into the full-length mirror, and glass rains down, nicking the top of my head.
01:13:39I throw myself onto my hands and knees and crawl toward the chest as fire catches my curtains and
01:13:44scream sound in the hallway behind me.
01:13:46Panic threatens to seize my muscles.
01:13:48I'm out of time, but I can't leave them.
01:13:50They're all I have left.
01:13:52Every inch is a fight, my body refusing to obey the simple command to move,
01:13:55and sweat beads on my forehead as the flames spread to the linens on my bed.
01:13:59What are you doing?
01:13:59Someone shouts behind me as I reach the trunk, but I can't afford the time to turn,
01:14:03not until I've found it.
01:14:04Pillows, and extra blanket, the books my father sent with me, I discard them all,
01:14:08flinging them into the fire like sacrifices as I burrow deeper into the bottomless chest.
01:14:12We have to go, cat sinks down to her knees beside me.
01:14:15They've already taken the haul.
01:14:16We need to fly.
01:14:18I can't find it, I try to yell, but it comes out nearly silent.
01:14:21Why can't the ice cream, rail against the cruelty, the perpetual anxiety of impending room?
01:14:25Get yourself out, I'll follow.
01:14:28I can't leave you, she grabbed me by the shoulders,
01:14:30so covering half her face, and fear waters her dark brown eyes.
01:14:33Don't make me try, because I can't.
01:14:35You have to live, I rip away and dig back into the chest.
01:14:38He'll choose you, I know he will, you are the future queen of surrender, and your people need you.
01:14:42She hasn't lost her crown, she'll fight for what's hers.
01:14:45I need you, she yells, then grasps and throws herself over me as he throws against our backs.
01:14:50Wood crackles and breaks, and then the heat changes, coming at us from every direction.
01:14:55Just another, my fingers fumble, then finally grasp the miniature painting, and I register
01:14:59their soft smiles, the playful honey brown eyes of my family before casting the R to my chest.
01:15:03But it, cat yanks me to my feet, dragging me toward the door, and we both startle as the beams of my
01:15:07bed come crashing down.
01:15:08Embers fly, cinching my hand, and the painting slips from my grip, catching fire on its way to the ground.
01:15:14No, I scream as cat takes me backward, and as the flame engulfs the portrait,
01:15:18it's no longer a painting, it's them.
01:15:20My parents, my family, they're burning.
01:15:23Stop, my throat can't force the word out as I am pulled away to the sound of their screams,
01:15:26their tears, begging me to save them.
01:15:28No, no.
01:15:29I come awake and jolt up right in bed, bashing for air and blinking off the remnants of the
01:15:33nightmare sweat drips down the back of my neck.
01:15:35Late afternoon sun streams in through the window, lighting the bedchamber that had been Zayden's,
01:15:39the one he warded so only he and I could get through.
01:15:42My heart races as I glance over the sleeping faces of my squad mates.
01:15:45Thank the gods that Zayden used the same warding technique on this room as he had on mine,
01:15:49it was that I pulled my squad through one by one.
01:15:52Trach is sleeping up against the door, using his pack for a pillow,
01:15:54and Redok is out a few feet away with his dagger mere inches from his effinged tips.
01:15:59Wee, re-whispers, sitting up beside me and rubbing asleep out of her eyes.
01:16:02You alright?
01:16:04I nod, squatting Marin and Catgirl with their backs against each other in the center of the room
01:16:07on makeshift pallets.
01:16:09We are all accounted for, there's no fire, no immediate danger, as much as I'm a soil,
01:16:13I'm glad he's not in harm's way.
01:16:15Clearly we are too close to the front for my peace of mind with dreams like that.
01:16:18Just a nightmare.
01:16:20Oh, she lies back down in the squat I'd usually sleep, and I fall onto Zayden's now sweat-soaked pillow.
01:16:25But style, I get them sometimes, too.
01:16:27I think so, it's been months since he's slept here, but I swear I catch a hint of wind as I turn my head
01:16:31toward Ri, keeping my voice low.
01:16:33But Cat was there, and I was trying to find the hinting of my family, but it was weird,
01:16:37and then they were burning.
01:16:38I sigh, which makes sense, considering my mother turned herself into an actual flame.
01:16:43Ri, do you missus?
01:16:44I'm sorry.
01:16:44I scoff lightly, remembering the dream, and I told Cat she had to leave because she was the future
01:16:49queen of Tyrinder.
01:16:51Ri says Viden, and she smithers a laugh with her hand.
01:16:54Now that's a real nightmare.
01:16:55I know, right, my smile slips, what's in your nightmares when you have them?
01:17:00She smooths a piece of black silk covering her hair.
01:17:02Usually, it's that you don't save soil, and I can't get to him fast enough because I'm me.
01:17:07The wrong call.
01:17:08You two are not as quiet as you think, we talk matters.
01:17:11What time is it?
01:17:13Probably time for us to get up, Ri says.
01:17:15The rest of the squad stirs, and we take turns in the bathing chamber before filing into the hallway,
01:17:19ready to make ourselves useful.
01:17:21A pair of riders, one wearing major rank and the other captain,
01:17:24approaches I should say in store, their footsteps as weary as their eyes.
01:17:28Maze says they have less than an hour, the major says, wrapping a bandage around her hand,
01:17:31then shoving her short blonde hair out of her eyes.
01:17:34Came out of nowhere.
01:17:36Maze, I know that name.
01:17:38Mated to Grime, 10 reminds me.
01:17:39Right, they've been mated for decades and are
01:17:42able to communicate at a far longer range than 10 in S-G-A-U-I-L.
01:17:45We're stretched too thin, a line of stitches buckles on the captain's cheek,
01:17:48and he shakes his head.
01:17:50If they're smart, they've already evacuated Newhall.
01:17:52We all step back against the wall so they can pass.
01:17:55Well, all except Marin, who blocks their way.
01:17:58I'm sorry, did you say Newhall?
01:18:00Yes, the captain replies, looking at Marin like he's tasted something sour.
01:18:04Why is it being evacuated?
01:18:06Marin rushes, her brow furrowing, the officers share a knowing look,
01:18:09and the rest of us from off the wall in front of the pairs.
01:18:11Cat quickly crosses behind Trader to reach Marin.
01:18:13The area is under attack.
01:18:15It's odd for Marin to tap in such a small village, but scouts record it's more.
01:18:19Marin inhales Sharpie, and Cat hooks her arm through her elbow.
01:18:22You have people there, the major stone softens, she in her gaze.
01:18:25Marin presses her lips between her teeth and nods.
01:18:27It's where her family fled, Cat answers.
01:18:30It's not more than half an hour from here. Are we flying?
01:18:33We, the captain looks at each of us, posing at my braid, before dressing Cat.
01:18:37We are running on little to no sleep and have already lost one rider this week.
01:18:40Half our ride is patrolling to the north and the other half is pushing burnout,
01:18:43so as harsh as it may sound, he shoots the major.
01:18:47Look I can't quite decipher, the village is too small to risk any more casualties to the union.
01:18:52My breath abandons me.
01:18:53So we just leave them to die.
01:18:55Trader's voice rises.
01:18:56Why? Because they're Koromish.
01:18:58Not because they're Koromish.
01:19:00Because we can't help.
01:19:01The major's words grow shorter.
01:19:02Not all of us weave lightning.
01:19:04She glances at me.
01:19:05If we want to save the towns, the cities, the denser areas of population,
01:19:08then an unfortunate part of war is going we'll lose some of the villagers.
01:19:11If you don't pick up strategic concepts in your third year,
01:19:14then you'll certainly learn fast once you graduate.
01:19:16The pair walks around Marin and Cat, their footsteps heavy as they depart.
01:19:20If any of us are still alive by the time they graduate, the captain's voice fades.
01:19:23My family's there, Marin whiskers, her face crumpling.
01:19:27Why didn't my parents go south when Zolio fell?
01:19:29They would have been safe in Cordon.
01:19:31Or they could have gone back to Kratos.
01:19:33Shush, Cat rubs Marin's arm.
01:19:35I'm sure they'll get out.
01:19:36Marin shakes her head violently.
01:19:38What if they're already dead?
01:19:39My stomach turns as I look to re.
01:19:4110 and I can make the flight faster than half an hour if we break from the squad.
01:19:45It's not like we haven't seen battle, Cat adds.
01:19:47We fought our way out of Cliff Spain.
01:19:49Rhi's defense, Ato's invoked Article A, so we're legally clear.
01:19:52But there are so many unknowns, she was just a herself.
01:19:55Number of when and, why when, but the civilians?
01:19:58Look, it's only a fight if we make it one.
01:20:00Redog glances at the flyers.
01:20:02Narrow the scope of the mission.
01:20:03We extract Marin's family.
01:20:05We save as many civilians as we can.
01:20:06We get out.
01:20:08Without knowing what we're up against, we can't just, Rhi starts.
01:20:11We defended with Kyle, Cat snaps.
01:20:13Rhi's mouth snaps shut.
01:20:15If it were Meera and Brennan in danger, I'd go.
01:20:17Especially with that nightmare so fresh in my mind.
01:20:19But there's a reason I'm not the squad leader in Rhi's.
01:20:22Vod, I suggest.
01:20:23I get it.
01:20:24Ordering us into a warzone could be catastrophic and we're just cadets, so vod.
01:20:27That's what we did at Russell.
01:20:29None of us mentioned that Liam and Soleil didn't come home.
01:20:31Rhi nods.
01:20:32Ol.
01:20:33Ol.
01:20:33Ol.
01:20:33Ol.
