Maggie Aderin-Pocock, Cariad Lloyd, Gareth Malone, Mike Wozniak

Series 6, Week 12, Day 2

Every day this week, former winners Maggie Aderin-Pocock, Cariad Lloyd, Gareth Malone and Mike Wozniak take on a series of quiz rounds selected by the host, quiz legend Richard Osman.

A daily winner is declared following a quickfire round at the end of each show, and the scores are tallied across the week, resulting in an overall champion being crowned on Friday.

Facing their second chance to win a prize, will the winning stars opt for the House of Games golden goblets, or will they be tempted with the must-have House of Games golden fondue set?

00:00Hello, everybody. I hope you're having a lovely Tuesday.
00:12Let's make it a little bit better, shall we, with another episode of House of Games,
00:15a Champions Week this week as well.
00:17Four former winners, all returning to battle it out for a gold-coloured trophy.
00:23Our players this week are Mike Wozniak.
00:27Maggie Adderin-Pocock.
00:31Carrie Adloyde.
00:33And Gareth Malone.
00:35Hello, everyone.
00:37Welcome. We had fun on Monday, didn't we?
00:40Carrie had especially had fun, because you won.
00:42I did, yeah.
00:43Congratulations. A winner amongst winners.
00:45Yeah, I know. For one day only.
00:48I'm enjoying it for one day.
00:49I don't know about that.
00:51Yeah, nor me. I've seen your form now, I think.
00:53Yeah.
00:54It was good, but four very good quizzes we've got this week.
00:57It's going to be tough to win this trophy.
00:59I think.
01:00Gareth, how did you feel the first day went for you?
01:02Middling. Middling.
01:03I was pleased not to be a zero.
01:06Yeah, I made the mistake of telling you we also have returners who are losers, and you said,
01:10can I go on one of those?
01:10I'm looking forward to that.
01:11That feels easier to win.
01:13If I lose this, can I then come back on that maybe next time?
01:16Oh, that's interesting.
01:17Maybe we could do that.
01:18Maggie, yesterday, Carrie had, well, she won a golden baseball cap because she wanted to give it to Mike.
01:23But there are other prizes up for grabs today.
01:25Shall we take a look?
01:26Please do.
01:27You could win today a golden toilet set, a golden watch, a golden ice bucket, golden fondue set, or the golden goblets of doom.
01:38Do they give eternal life?
01:41Do you know what?
01:42The opposite.
01:43They give you doom.
01:44Yeah.
01:45Due to an error in our ordering system, they are unfortunately cursed.
01:48Oh, no.
01:50They're also useful.
01:51What do you fancy, Maggie?
01:52I was looking at the goblets of doom, but now I think I'd go for the fondue set, and I have a dairy allergy, but I'm sure I can use it for other things.
01:58Well, then, for you, that is the fondue set of doom.
02:00Yeah.
02:00Mike, you were saying your mother-in-law uses the compost bin that you worked on last time.
02:06Yeah, very much so.
02:06Lovely.
02:07What's her name?
02:08Diane.
02:08She could get use out of any of those, I reckon.
02:11No, listen, Diane's had her prize.
02:12Yeah.
02:13I think it was time for...
02:14Roger hasn't, though.
02:15Father-in-law.
02:17What are you thinking?
02:18Gobblets of doom.
02:19Gobblets of doom, of course.
02:20Cariad?
02:20I would like the fondue, but for chocolate.
02:22Yeah, you can use it for fondue.
02:23Yeah, it's multi-purpose.
02:25Okay, great.
02:25Gary?
02:26Does the watch remind you when this show is on?
02:29Oh, nice.
02:29I suppose you could break it on at six o'clock, because we're always on at six o'clock.
02:33It's six o'clock.
02:34There we go.
02:35A broken watch for Gareth Malone.
02:37Let's take a look at our weekly leaderboard.
02:39We're only one day down.
02:41Of course, Cariad up the top there with four, Mike just behind on three, but plenty of time
02:46for all that to change.
02:48And it could all change right now as we play our first round on Tuesday's House of Games.
02:52And it's going to be...
02:56The answers in the question.
02:58I'm going to show you a category, which is animated characters.
03:03I'm now going to give each of you, in turn, a clue about an animated character.
03:07Within the clue, a bit of it will be in capital letters.
03:09And the answer also happens to be an anagram of those capital letters.
03:13So, Mike, what animated character is this, please?
03:16If you're like this canine character and hate things that go boo, do cosy things instead
03:23of solving spooky mysteries.
03:28Scooby-Doo.
03:30Scooby-Doo?
03:32It's correct.
03:33Scooby-Doo.
03:34And then I'm going to boo, doo, cosy.
03:36Maggie, it's as difficult as that.
03:41I think I got that one, but...
03:43An animated character for you.
03:46Though her chances of interesting her father in her intellectual pursuits are slim, passion
03:51and education will get this young girl far.
03:53Lisa Simpson.
03:59Lisa Simpson.
04:01Absolutely.
04:01I didn't know that.
04:02That does not look like an anagram of Lisa Simpson.
04:05It really doesn't.
04:07Cariad, an animated character for you.
04:10This rodent hero and his furry friend battle gruesome and terrible foes, including a megalomaniac
04:17toad.
04:18Oh, Danger Mouse.
04:22Is it Danger Mouse?
04:23Yes.
04:24It is Danger Mouse.
04:26They're written like novels, so you're like, who is that rodent hero?
04:31It's Danger Mouse, yeah.
04:33Gareth, I have an animated character for you to untangle.
04:38It's almost as if this gang leader made a pact to cause as much trouble as possible for
04:43Officer Dibble.
04:48That has to be Top Catch.
04:50I mean, you would think so, wouldn't you?
04:51I would like to say thank you very much for that one.
04:54It is Top Catch.
04:55Well done.
04:55Yeah, I felt like we had two hard ones and two easy ones in that past.
04:59Mike, we have a new category.
05:01Oh.
05:01And that category is Champion Runners.
05:05Champion Runners is an interesting title for a category.
05:08We've hidden a Champion Runner for you.
05:10Yep.
05:12When he retired, this Olympic gold medal winning runner knew how to keep bringing home the
05:16Bacon, easiest way, was to become an MP.
05:21Oh.
05:22Yes.
05:23Oh, yeah.
05:23Yeah.
05:24That's not helpful for Mike.
05:26I know, sorry.
05:26All of you just said, oh, yeah.
05:27Easy.
05:28Oh, yeah.
05:29He's such an easy one.
05:32Oh, is it Sebastian Coe?
05:33Is it Sebastian Coe?
05:35That's exactly who it is.
05:37Yeah.
05:37And the ground was Bacon Easiest, he knew.
05:41Maggie, I have a Champion Runner for you, but which Champion Runner is it?
05:46This sprinter won Olympic gold, not only in Beijing, but also in London and Rio.
05:58I want to say Usain Bolt, but I don't...
06:00You want to say Usain Bolt?
06:02It is exactly who it is, Usain Bolt.
06:04Oh, that was...
06:04Well done.
06:06I have an anagram for you of a Champion Runner.
06:09You'd forgive this middle-distance athlete for shouting,
06:13I could not be stronger.
06:15I ran a mile in record time.
06:20Is it Roger somebody?
06:21Oh!
06:22Roger...
06:22Not Roger Black.
06:24Roger...
06:25Is it your father-in-law, Mike?
06:26It's not my father-in-law.
06:28His name is Roger Stair Rail.
06:32Oh.
06:33Staircase.
06:34Roger Staircase.
06:35It is not, I'm afraid.
06:37We'll time you out.
06:38Uh, Cariad, anyone want to buzz in?
06:39Yeah.
06:40Maggie.
06:41Roger Bannister.
06:42Roger Bannister was what we were looking for.
06:44That was a pretty hefty clip.
06:46I took it literally!
06:48Gareth, last question in this round.
06:49I know two runners, so...
06:50A Champion Runner for you.
06:53Think you could beat this runner in a marathon if you went at full pace?
06:56Afraid not?
06:57She set world records.
07:00Oh, it's not Chris Akebussi and it's not Steve Cramp, so...
07:04So, I am out.
07:08You know this one.
07:11Oh, that's...
07:12I'm ready.
07:12You overestimate my knowledge of sport.
07:16Should we time you out, Gareth?
07:17Yeah.
07:17Put your fingers on buzzers, anyone else?
07:19It's Cariad.
07:20Paula Radcliffe.
07:21Paula Radcliffe, we were looking for.
07:23Well played.
07:24Paula Radcliffe.
07:26That's the end of our first round.
07:28Take a look at our leaderboard, shall we?
07:31Gareth, you have one.
07:32Mike, you've got two.
07:33Cariad, two as well.
07:35Maggie, out on the lead with three points.
07:36Early leader.
07:37Well played, Maggie Adderin-Pocock.
07:40Let's play our pairs round, shall we?
07:42On Tuesday's House of Games, it's going to be...
07:47Rijkaard Oshmann's Haus des Spielers.
07:50Yeah.
07:51Gareth.
07:51Is it my choice again?
07:52You have the honour of choosing a partner today.
07:54Who would you like to play with?
07:56Cariad, I think, please.
07:57Cariad.
07:58Yeah, I mean...
07:58Yeah, he likes a winner.
07:59I like a winner.
08:00Gareth and Cariad, you're a team.
08:02Maggie and Mike, you are a team.
08:04In this round, all the questions are in foreign languages,
08:06as are all the answers.
08:07OK?
08:08Your categories to choose between are these.
08:12There's Libros, Animal,
08:13Tisca,
08:14Teatr,
08:16Chimica
08:17and Fussbal.
08:18What would you like your category to be, Mike and Maggie?
08:21Two or five.
08:23Chemicals and Animals?
08:24Germans might probably be comfortable.
08:26Do you want to go for the animals?
08:27You mentioned animals.
08:28It is French for animals.
08:29Animal.
08:30Here is your question.
08:32There are three possible answers here.
08:34Which of these animals, Australian, is an oiseau?
08:39Here is the answer.
08:42Diable de Tasmanie.
08:45Kangaroo.
08:46Yeah, red kangaroo.
08:48Kookaburra.
08:49L'oriquette
08:50ac on ciel.
08:54So it's got to be that guy, right?
08:55The last one.
08:56Yes.
08:56Because the question is,
08:57which of these animals, Australian animals, is a bird?
08:59I see.
09:00Yes.
09:00We know it's not a kangaroo.
09:01It's not a Tasmanian dove.
09:03I'm definitely with you.
09:04Yes.
09:05I can't pronounce it, but that one.
09:07So, oiseau, you're saying is bird?
09:08We'll go for the other.
09:10And you're going for, uh...
09:11Three, please.
09:11K'est on ciel.
09:12Is that the correct answer?
09:15It is the correct answer.
09:17Yeah, what do we think it is?
09:19I don't know, yeah.
09:20It says something about the sky, doesn't it?
09:21It says the sky, doesn't it?
09:22Which of these Australian animals is a bird?
09:24Yeah, Tasmanian devil, surely, red kangaroo.
09:27Rainbow lorikeet.
09:29Rainbow lorikeet.
09:29Ooh, nice.
09:31Rainbow lorikeet.
09:32Very nice.
09:32A type of parrot, apparently.
09:34Cariad and Gareth, do you have languages between you?
09:36Well, I mean, I did French at school.
09:40I did a little bit of German.
09:42Fussball?
09:43Yeah.
09:45So you're going to go for...
09:46Sexbiter.
09:47Fussball?
09:47Yeah, yeah.
09:48Sexfussball.
09:52A professional football team out of Sheffield?
09:54Yeah, yeah, yeah.
09:55Is the answer...
10:00Montag?
10:01Nein.
10:02Nein.
10:04Oh, OK.
10:05Yeah, that one.
10:05Midwog.
10:06Midwog.
10:06Midwog.
10:07Sheffield Wednesday.
10:07Mm-hmm.
10:10Samstag.
10:10Midwog.
10:11Midwog.
10:11Midwog.
10:12The question is...
10:13The professional football team from Sheffield is named after which day of the week?
10:18Wednesday.
10:19Wednesday.
10:20Wednesday.
10:21Middle week, essentially.
10:22Midwog.
10:23Yeah.
10:24Midwog.
10:25Midwog.
10:26Yeah.
10:27Midwog.
10:28Yeah.
10:29Midwog.
10:30Yeah.
10:31Midwog, yeah.
10:32Midwog.
10:33Let's take a look.
10:34Is it Midwog?
10:35It is Midwog.
10:36Well done.
10:37We've been lucky there.
10:38The professional football team from Sheffield is named after which day of the week?
10:41Wednesday.
10:42Very well played.
10:43Maggie and Mike.
10:44We've had German.
10:45We've had French.
10:46Yeah.
10:47I feel we're in dodgier territory now.
10:48I reckon.
10:49Which of these would you like?
10:50I was wondering if, looking at the question rather than the language, a number five sort
10:54of chemicals.
10:55Yeah.
10:56I'm just trying to get the science in.
10:57Yeah, yeah.
10:58Don't rely on me for anything.
10:59Yeah, let's go for it.
11:00Maggie, you're one of our finest scientists.
11:01I don't think you have to go.
11:02I don't know, but perhaps you have some chemical knowledge as well?
11:03Yeah.
11:04Maybe you have some science.
11:05Maybe both of us can...
11:06I think we're a war winner.
11:07I'm a bloke for this one.
11:08Maggie, you've got it.
11:09No, I need this bloke.
11:10I'm sure it's not a question about chimneys.
11:13I mean, that would be funny if that was the case.
11:17Chimica, you're going for?
11:18Which is Italian for chemistry.
11:20Ah.
11:21Chimica.
11:22Here's your question.
11:24Nella tabolo, periodica, quale elemento?
11:28Ah, yeah.
11:29Il simbolo, chimico.
11:31Silver, is it?
11:32A-U is gold.
11:33Oh, A-U got silver, yes.
11:34So, is it one of these three?
11:36Is it one of these three?
11:37I don't really need to give the options to any of you lots.
11:40That's the problem with Champions Week.
11:41We've got to translate it, so...
11:43The options are...
11:45Platino.
11:47Silicio.
11:49Argento.
11:51Argento.
11:53Argento.
11:54Yeah.
11:55Argento.
11:56Is the answer Argento?
11:58It is.
11:59It is.
12:00And you're absolutely right about the question as well.
12:03On the periodic table, which element has a symbol a G?
12:06Final question in this round.
12:08Cariad and Gareth.
12:09Come on.
12:10What have we got left?
12:11Libros.
12:12Libros.
12:13Books.
12:14Books.
12:15That feels...
12:16Is that Spanish?
12:17It might be Spanish.
12:18But the theatre might be...
12:19Who would spell theatre like that?
12:21Literature or theatre?
12:23They're both huge passions of mine.
12:26LAUGHTER
12:27And just take a punt on the language.
12:29Sure, OK.
12:30Yeah, go on.
12:31I don't know what language it is.
12:32Neither do I.
12:33Could be anything.
12:34Could be Portuguese.
12:35So now it's Swedish.
12:36Oh!
12:37Theatre and Swedish.
12:38Uh-oh!
12:39Well...
12:40Theatre?
12:41Borli.
12:42Here's your question.
12:47OK, we know this.
12:48We know this.
12:49Titania and Bottom are characters of what Shakespeare play.
12:54That's Midsummer Night's Dream.
12:56Midsummer Night's Dream.
12:57Oh, and once again...
12:58Midsummer Night's Dream.
12:59This round has been entirely redundant.
13:01LAUGHTER
13:02Stormen.
13:03Stormen.
13:04That must be...
13:05Oh, that must be Tempest.
13:06Yeah.
13:07In Midsummer Night's Drum...
13:08That's Droom.
13:09What could that be?
13:10LAUGHTER
13:12In Winter's Tale.
13:13Winter's Tale.
13:14Yeah.
13:15Well, I mean, Cariad, do you have any idea?
13:18LAUGHTER
13:19And Midsummer Night's Strom.
13:21What can it mean?
13:23LAUGHTER
13:24What could it mean?
13:25It's just cryptic!
13:26Gobbledygook!
13:27Yeah.
13:28Uh...
13:29On Midsummer Night's Drum.
13:31It is.
13:32Well done.
13:33You're absolutely right about the question as well.
13:35Tania and Bottom are characters in which Shakespeare play.
13:37That must be Tempest, is it?
13:38Stormen and The Winter's Tale at the end.
13:40That's the end of that round.
13:42We don't even have to move back.
13:44The leaderboard is going to shock you,
13:46because it will be exactly the same as it was before,
13:48but everyone's slightly better off.
13:49Gareth?
13:50You have three.
13:51Michael and Cariards with four.
13:52Or...
13:53I'll lead with five.
13:54That's not too bad.
13:55You might have to take that, wouldn't you?
13:57Three rounds to go.
13:58Just two points between all of our players today.
14:00Our next round is...
14:01Singing Ims.
14:05Fingers on buzzers, please, now.
14:07I don't know if anyone here is a choir master.
14:09Mike?
14:10No?
14:11I'm going to show you the lyrics now to some famous songs,
14:13but we've rewritten the lyrics.
14:14So they will mean the same thing, but in different words.
14:17Ah.
14:18So you just have to decipher which songs these lyrics are from,
14:20please.
14:21Right.
14:22So buzz in as soon as you know.
14:23Your first lyrics are these.
14:38Yes, that's Cariad.
14:39Yeah, The Lion Sleeps Tonight.
14:44The Mighty Jungle.
14:45The Mighty Cat Slumbers This Evening.
14:47Lion Sleeps Tonight by Tight Fit.
14:49Next one.
14:53An attitude of plenty.
14:54One requires a person with the feel of a homo sapiens.
15:00Cariad.
15:01Stop.
15:02Is that right?
15:07I mean, in some way, these lyrics are better.
15:09Stop by the Spice Girls.
15:12Next singing Ims.
15:14I had assumed genuine infatuation was unique to pixie gossip,
15:19destined for other living souls, yet never for myself.
15:22BUZZER
15:27Yes, Gareth.
15:28I'm a believer.
15:29Oh.
15:30Is that right?
15:31BUZZER
15:32Oh, well done.
15:33I'm a believer by the monkeys.
15:35I like pixie gossip as a fairy tale.
15:37Yeah, lots of stuff.
15:38Hmm.
15:39And next one.
15:41An absence of females, an absence of sobbing,
15:43an absence of females, an absence of sobbing.
15:45BUZZER
15:49BUZZER
15:50Yes, Mike.
15:51No woman, no cry.
15:52Is it no woman, no cry?
15:54BUZZER
15:56Bob Marley and the wailers.
15:58No woman, no cry.
16:01Next one.
16:02Cease talking.
16:03I understand what you are communicating, so kindly quit demonstrating.
16:07Cease informing me, as it's painful.
16:09BUZZER
16:11Yes, Karyad.
16:12Don't speak.
16:13By no doubt.
16:14Oh.
16:15Is it don't speak by no doubt?
16:16Oh.
16:17Oh.
16:18Is it don't speak by no doubt?
16:19Don't speak.

16:29Final question in this round.
16:30Which song is this, please?
16:32This is the reason one is not difficult.
16:34One is uncomplicated in a similar fashion to the breakfast time
16:37after Saturday night.
16:39BUZZER
16:41Yes, Mike.
16:43Is it easy on Sunday morning?
16:46I don't know if it's just easy...
16:47Oh, is that right?
16:49Is it easy?
16:50Yes.
16:51That's why I'm easy.
16:52That's why I'm easy.
16:53Of course.
16:56I'm easy like some more.

17:38I'm going to let you sit down.
17:39For everyone else today, stand up, please.
17:41I'm going to give you a series of categories.
17:43You give me answers in that categories until you run out,
17:46at which point I'll tell you to sit down.
17:47Ooh, OK.
17:48Last person at the standing wins.
17:49Unless it's Maggie.
17:50In which case, if Maggie is still in sitting down
17:53and is not standing, she wins.
17:55Couldn't be simpler.
17:57Everyone understand?
17:58The first category is this.
18:00I am looking for...

18:54So, Maggie is out.
