Leanna Coy, a flight attendant from Connecticut, shared a tip on her TikTok profile for passengers who are approached by other travelers asking to switch seats on a plane.

She warned about the potential risks involved in changing seats with someone, which could lead to serious problems.

“If the person you switched with does something wrong on the plane, it could end up falling on you,” the flight attendant said in the video, which has already garnered nearly 20,000 views.

Coy shared a negative experience she had after switching seats with someone on a United Airlines flight to Jordan.

“If you know anything about United’s service — to buy drinks or anything onboard — you have to pre-register your card on the app, which I had already done,” Coy explained.

She then said she was shocked to learn that the passenger could technically gain access to her payment card after the seat swap.

“Do I think this woman was trying to scam me and use my card? No,” she noted. “But it’s something to be aware of,” she warned.

Coy also pointed out that if the woman had decided, for example, to smoke in the bathroom or do something illegal, she herself could have been held responsible — “because my name would still be on the passenger manifest,” she recalled.

She concluded by saying that someone else’s lack of planning shouldn’t mean she has to give up her assigned seat.

00:00So I'm playing to Jordan on United, right? Actually, my route was to Frankfurt first.
00:04We're boarding, and this lady asked me if I could switch seats with her. I was in an aisle,
00:07she was one aisle right ahead of me. Normally, I am absolutely 100% against changing seats. I think
00:13your lack of planning should not constitute me having to move. Unless that seat happens to be
00:18an upgrade, but it usually never is. This time, since that's almost the exact same seat, it's
00:22like, okay, let me not be a bitch for once. Like, whatever. I'm like, yeah, sure. And I'm already,
00:27like, on edge. Even despite just, like, the seat itself, you have to keep in mind, if the person
00:32you switch with does anything to act up on the plane, that can now come back on you. I know that
00:37sounds dramatic, because you're like, okay, what are the odds of that? But like, I see what goes down
00:41on the plane, so like, if this lady now decides to go smoke in the bathroom or something, that could
00:44come back on me, because my name's gonna be on the manifest right there. So I'm like, okay, great,
00:48now I get to be anxious. Again, that's dramatic, but then I realized, wait a second, I'm flying on
00:52United. If you know anything about United's service, if you want to buy drinks or anything, you have to
00:57put your card onto the app ahead of time, which I've done before, so my card is stored on the app.
01:03I was like, wait, there's no way. But I asked the flight attendant when she came by, and I was like,
01:07hey, I just switched seats with somebody, but my card is connected to my account. Does that mean
01:11that they now have access to my card? I'm thinking she's gonna be like, no, no. But she was like,
01:16oh, yeah, technically they do. She's like, well, they're supposed to verify even with the seat number.
01:21She was like, they don't always though. But she was like, I'm the one working in this section,
01:24so I'll make sure. So it was okay. Here's the thing though, even if they are verifying the name,
01:29you know how many times I'm doing service and somebody will be like, yeah, can I get a Coke?
01:33And I'm like, yeah, sure. That's for purchase. Is that okay? They're like, yeah. And I'm like,
01:37okay, they can take your card. And they're like, okay. And then they still just look at me and I'm
01:41like, okay, they can take your card. They're like, what? It's for purchase? You just told me okay
01:45like three times. So you know, even if they're verifying the name, they're probably going,
01:49oh, Ms. Koi? And they're like, yep. And like not actually listening to what the flight attendant is saying.
01:53Now, do I think this lady I switched seats with was trying to scam me out of money on my card?
01:58No, but that's just something to be aware of. And again, I fully support you if you don't want
02:03to switch seats. You are entitled to the seat that you chose. The seat that you chose.
