00:00In the Hunchback of Notre Dame, the writer Victor Hugo describes a mob scene with thousands of heads piled in heaps.
00:10Something like the balls in a park of artillery.
00:13How did we create this super-sized crowd for the scene in my show?
00:17Well, first, we brought in some special actors called Extras.
00:21An extra is a background person, and they're not allowed to speak.
00:27They're just there in the background to make it look realistic.
00:31You can't have a courtyard with just the two principal characters, and you need to have some kind of movement.
00:37So there were about 20 extras in the scene, enough to fill a corner of the courtyard.
00:41But to make it look really jam-packed, we needed a visual effect.
00:46I can't remember how many extras we had that day, but it was an eighth as many as you see,
00:51because I photographed that particular courtyard in eight sections.
00:55And then we placed them all together to make the one big group.
00:59We call that in Wishbone language a zone shot, because we photographed each of the sections of people in their own zone.
01:07When all of the camera shots are combined, the courtyard is so full, there isn't room enough for a cat!
01:12Even if Victor Hugo had included one in his scene.
01:16We worked pretty hard to create this crowd scene.
01:18Of course, even if you have a thousand human extras, you still need a canine superstar!
