00:00After many years of uncontrollable alcohol consumption, Eddie tried to rein it in.

00:06He would tell me at least two or three times that he was sober, and it would always fail.

00:11His addiction was so overwhelming and so powerful.

00:18Alcohol abuse is one of the biggest risk factors in developing head and neck cancers,

00:22and it's responsible for approximately one-third of the cases worldwide.

00:27When you drink alcohol, your body breaks it down into a chemical called acetaldehyde.

00:34Now, acetaldehyde damages your DNA and prevents your body from repairing the damage.

00:40DNA is a cell's instructional name that controls a cell's growth and function.

00:46So when DNA is damaged, a cell can begin to grow out of control and create a cancerous tumor.

00:52And looking at his medical history, I see that Eddie had been battling with another highly addictive substance, and that's cocaine.
