00:00Israel warned on Friday that it will continue its military strikes in Lebanon until the Iran-backed militant group Hezbollah is fully disarmed.
00:11The announcement came just hours after Israeli forces targeted southern Beirut,
00:16an attack that Lebanese leaders condemned as a serious violation of a ceasefire agreement reached in November.
00:23An Israeli military evacuation warning issued ahead of Thursday's strikes prompted mass panic,
00:30sending large numbers of residents fleeing from Beirut's southern suburbs, an area long considered a Hezbollah stronghold.
00:38According to the Israeli military, the strikes targeted underground drone manufacturing facilities operated by Hezbollah.
00:46The attack occurred on the eve of Eid al-Adha, one of the most important holidays in the Muslim calendar,
00:52and sent thick plumes of smoke over the Lebanese capital.
00:56The attack marked six months since a U.S. and French brokered ceasefire was agreed upon
01:01to halt escalating hostilities between Hezbollah and Israel.
01:06Under the terms of the agreement, Lebanon pledged to disarm Hezbollah,
01:11a group often said to be more powerful than the state itself.
01:15Hezbollah ignited renewed conflict by launching cross-border attacks into northern Israel,
01:20claiming solidarity with its ally Hamas after the latter's October 7, 2023 assault on Israeli territory.
01:28While Israel has carried out numerous strikes on southern Lebanon since the ceasefire,
01:33direct attacks on Beirut's southern suburbs have been rare.
01:37Lebanese officials decried Thursday's strike as a flagrant violation of the truce,
01:42especially given its timing just before the Eid al-Adha holiday.
