39:17You know, while Florida's economy isn't as bad as some of the other states,

39:21we have a lot of needs in Florida.

39:23And in the Florida House, we've just decided that we don't need more taxes.

39:26State lawmakers get a short spring break before they head back to work,

39:31but some say they can balance the budget without more taxes.

39:34Good evening, everyone, and thanks for joining us for News Tonight.

39:37I'm Carmen Corsi.

39:38It looks like the debate over the state budget will not end anytime soon.

39:43State lawmakers are heading back to Tallahassee next week for a special session.

39:47State Representative Alan Bentz says the short break will be good for lawmakers.

39:50He says the House and Senate are close to finishing up the budget

39:54and agreeing on issues like medical malpractice and workers' compensation insurance.

39:59While lawmakers did not complete any major issues during the regular session,

40:03Bush says that they should be ready for the return to Tallahassee,

40:06and Alan Bentz agrees.

40:09You know, I wish we could have accomplished more, but we need a good week.

40:12We'll come back on Monday in about eight days,

40:16and hopefully we'll be able to knock out four or five really good items

40:19just by, you know, kind of getting a little breather here.

40:22Well, the special session begins in Tallahassee May 12th,

40:25and it's estimated that the session will cost taxpayers about $40,000 a day.

40:31The Democratic presidential candidates held their first televised national debate

40:36in Columbia, South Carolina last night.

40:38The nine Democrats argued among themselves, but several clearly agreed on one thing.

40:43They must convince voters they are as strong on national security issues as President Bush is.

40:50They're not going to choose anyone who sends a message

40:53that is other than strength on defense and homeland security.

40:57I'd keep a strong military in this country,

40:59but I think this was the wrong war at the wrong time.

41:01I think it was the right decision.
