00:00We're here to present awards to the Merlot Public School representatives who drew two particular paintings
00:09who were marked upon that they were very appropriate in the RSL and we had them in the Soldiers Club viewing for several weeks.
00:19We decided this year that with Easter and Anzac being so close together, everyone seems to run the Easter competitions,
00:26colouring in, giving away chocolate. We thought we'd try and make a little bit more community spirit and bring back Anzac
00:32and make it more focused on the Anzac and what it means to our kids in today's society.
00:38So we asked each school to participate to present a collaborative artwork which we then displayed at the RSL
00:45and we've decided that because we were so well received this year we're actually going to make it an annual event for Anzac.
00:52It's for the people who serve for our countries and help us at this range.
00:58Being an ex-teacher myself, I think, you know, you've got to put it in the classroom in context
01:02and, you know, get them involved with all the events that go on around Anzac Day.
01:07As generations get older, we sometimes lose sight of history and Anzac is a big part of our history
01:15and it's what's made us, our country, what it is today. So I think it's a really good thing to bring it back
01:22and have the younger generation reflect as to what Anzac is and what it will mean to them and their future.
01:29It is a day to remember and commemorate those who were before us.
01:34Well, you know, as a teacher, you really want to get the children involved.
01:37So you want them to understand it, you know, mentally, but you also want to get their writing skills,
01:44you want to get their discussion skills, their talking skills all involved,
01:49because that way it's retained much better, the logic of it.
01:53You know, if you just throw it at them and then you leave it, they'll never ever retain that sort of information.
01:59We just talk about, you know, we scaffold it all down.
02:02So we talk about courage. What does it take to have courage?
02:06How do you show courage? And it might be if Bum's been upset,
02:10you might help her by helping her around the house.
02:13So, and doing things that you don't necessarily have done before.
02:16So someone might have fallen over, so you might go and get a teacher
02:20or you might run up and get the first aid back.
02:23You might sit and help them and make them feel better.
02:28So courage comes in different ways.
02:30It's different for little children coming to school when on your first day of school
02:36or coming when you think you might have a test or something, that plan, that all takes courage too.
02:40The artwork was amazing and it was on display for about a month at the RSL Club.
02:45Also online on our elders webpage and people could vote via the voting system online
02:53or they could either vote at the RSL Club.
02:56They loved it. Yeah, they loved it. And they feel such pride.
02:59Yay! Because we're only tiny and we're competing against schools that have got like, you know, 450, 500 kids.
03:06And we're just tiny and we're just tiny little small school and we actually won!
03:12We're just tiny and we're tiny.
03:14We're tiny. And we're tiny!
03:18We're tiny! You mean?
03:20I can't buy anything, too.
03:22Hopefully. I can buy anything on the other side.
03:24That's a little bit like that.
03:26You guys are tiny.
03:27And I think that's how we can do it.
03:29And I just wanted to buy what I can buy.
03:30We'll see a little bit in here.
03:32Got some more money in here.
