00:37Thank you very much. Thank you. It was a great honor for me.
00:41And it was an honor that you were there.
00:43Really, really amazing filmmaker.
00:46Beautiful story teller. It's fantastic.
00:48We both love movies and entertaining audiences
00:51and doing things that are new.
00:54You know, taking a story and what some people think that what it might be
00:58and making it such a different story and personal.
01:05Thank you.
01:40Now it's your turn.
01:42We inspire each other.
01:43It goes back and forth.
02:00Good!
02:01We inspire each other.
02:03That's it!
03:00Yes!Yes!Yes!Yes!Yes!Yes!
03:04Here we go!
03:05Yes!You understand!
03:11Thank you.You understand?
03:13I have a saying that pressure is a privilege
03:17and so I take it on and I tell everyone that I work with
03:22pressure is a privilege
03:27Yes!You're going to feel a lot of that
03:28You're going to feel very privileged on your movie
04:42Thank you
04:43Thank you
04:45That is storytelling. It's
04:47You know, the films that I've studied that influence me
04:51Singing in the rain, Fantasia, the silent films
04:55So many movies. The whole thing, even since I was very young
05:01It's the character and story is the most important
05:05So that if we're looking for motion with action
05:08How do I invest the character into that action
05:12And you do that so well also, so well
05:14You invest me in the character
05:16So now when I'm watching the motion and the action
05:19I'm invested in the characters
05:22With action, like a dance sequence
05:28I'm looking at what's the story and the character
05:30of bringing the characters together
05:32Or pulling the characters apart
05:34Or feeling a progression very quickly
05:37With the character
05:38So that kind of I'm looking at motion and how that creates an emotional reaction
05:43In an audience
05:45So those things that I'm constantly, even when I was younger
05:48I was always like you have to invest in the character
05:51Let the story evolve with that
05:53So all of these things that, you know, that we work towards
06:01And you know, finding those moments
06:03We can write it down, but it's the actor, it's the frame, it's the setting
06:08It's our structure of the script that builds those pieces
06:14And the mission movies, you look at it, they're very, very detailed
06:17I can do, you know, a character Magnolia or, you know, where it's playing out in scenes
06:25You know, you have to be very judicious
06:28And I'm always looking for how fast can I invest the audience in the characters, in the world
06:35And I start out, I have, you know, in the first minutes of the movie
06:40We're making agreements with the audience
06:44Teaching them how to look at the movie
06:46How to view the film
06:48It's a promise
06:50That I'm gonna give you this
06:52And I always want to work to pay off that promise
06:56I'm looking at how
06:58How can I take and keep inventing for audiences
07:03I've just, I've never taken it for granted
07:05And I'm thinking about the world when I'm making a movie
07:09Ever since I was young, I traveled the world watching movies with them
07:13To understand how to communicate stories
07:17Not for the world
07:19Whatever kind of story I'm trying to tell
07:21And that's something that's always in my mind
07:24What is a film gonna play like here in Japan or in any other country
07:29Trying to make the story in a manner and telling it in a way that
07:34That we're getting what we want across
07:36But that we can communicate it where people will invest in it
07:39Yeah, I'm always looking at what tools we have as storytellers
07:43And what story do we want to tell
07:45And what effect are we creating on the audience
07:48So I'm always thinking about it as a storyteller, the actor
07:53And then at times I'm being the audience
07:55And looking at, am I using the tools to create the effect that I want to on the audience
08:01So we have the script but we're constantly developing and I'm watching it
08:05And I'm trying to be the audience also
08:08When I was very young, I was 18, I was making my first film
08:12And I didn't go to school for movies
08:15But the director and the producer was making a movie called Taps
08:18And they knew I was going to every department
08:20And I was studying every department
08:22How do they do their jobs
08:23And I wasn't just asking, I was working in those
08:26Everything, the writer, the director, the editor, costumes, production, stunts
08:32Stunts, I was studying everything
08:34And he put me down
08:35And they allowed me to see rushes
08:37And they made scenes and the director said
08:40This is, you're going to watch yourself
08:43This, these shots are in the movie
08:45But I want you to look at it like you're the audience
08:47Not you watching yourself
08:49But be the audience watching this
08:51And train yourself to do it
08:53That was very very helpful and I never forgot it
08:56So I'm not absorbed when I'm watching myself
08:59I'm looking at it from the point of view of
09:01Is it communicating to the audience
09:03Whatever it is
09:04Not just myself, but our overall story
09:06And I go to acting school
09:08I basically teach myself and I study
09:11Thank you
09:12We don't want the audience to watch the movie
09:14We want them to experience the movie
09:16You know, I want them to
09:18Yes
09:19Yes, yes, the big screen
09:22And the visual and the characters
09:25But like you understand
09:26I've got to care about the characters
09:33Yes, me too
09:47No, and you too
09:48Because look, we just have to make movies
09:50That audiences want to see
09:52And that we make them for them
09:54And there's the unique experience
09:57Of going to a cinema
09:59Where we're all experiencing
10:02The same thing together
10:04It's so beautiful
10:05And it's our job
10:06To make the best possible films we can
10:08And communicate to that audience
10:10And do it
10:11Yes, and we help each other
10:13And inspire each other
10:15And inspire the audience
10:17And they inspire us
10:18It goes back and forth
10:19You know
10:20Yeah, we went to Ghibli
10:22We went to Ghibli for
10:24To see that
10:25This is Christopher Macquarie

10:28Honored to meet you
10:29Thank you
10:30It was a fantastic conversation
10:32About storytelling
10:33How challenging
10:34It's like the mission of possible movies are
10:36It's like making the movie
10:38It is
10:39It is
10:40It is
10:41We have that
10:43We have that experience
10:44And how it reflects in the movies
10:46About the challenges
10:47To overcome them
10:48Watching it is
10:49It is very much like
10:50Making it
