00:00You were on American Idol 14 years ago, and do you ever reminisce on those moments or even watch the show today?
00:07Yeah, we still watch. My wife's still a huge fan, but she's going to watch every week.
00:13But yeah, I reminisce all the time.
00:14Last night I had to go to my secondary email to look for an order that was coming through.
00:20You can see the first, and it was like, click your last.
00:22I said, let me click the last button to see what I was sending emails back in the day.
00:25And it was all like the audition information and like going to Hollywood.
00:31Here's what you need to do for this.
00:32And all right, you've made it through the next.
00:34It was all like the itineraries.
00:35So even last night I was like, man, pretty, pretty crazy how time flies.
00:41And the fact that you kept all of that, like it didn't disappear after all of those years.
00:45I'm not sure I knew that I kept it, but it was still there.
00:49So pretty, pretty, pretty, pretty cool to look back on for sure.
00:52Is there anything that your son, you know, has taught you about yourself that you didn't realize before coming at dad?
01:00I'm a little more patient than I thought I was.
01:02You know, I feel like you got to just go with the flow sometimes.
01:05And there might be coffee cups spilled on the couch and little things here and there.
01:09And he, he might, you know, you might get a brand new bus and he takes a Sharpie all over it to bunks and mirrors.
01:16And just saying that's a hypothetical.
01:18Maybe that happened or didn't.
01:19But, you know, all you can do is laugh and smile.
01:22And he's, even when those crazy things happen, he's still so cute doing it.
01:27So, yeah.
01:28Yeah, it's so special.
01:30And you have a new song out?
01:33Yeah.
01:33Tell us about that.
01:34Yeah, I'm excited about this one.
01:35This is, if you're a Hootie and the Blowfish fan, I think you might love this song.
01:39I grew up loving Hootie and the Blowfish and we wrote this song with him in mind.
01:44It's called Bottle Rockets, but if you listen through it, you might hear a familiar voice and Darius Rucker and the rest of the band getting in there to join us.
01:52So, this was a lot of fun.
01:54Something different for him.
01:55We've never really done a song like this, but it turned out pretty cool.
01:57So, what gave you the inspiration for this song?
02:00You know, just, we were writing a bunch of songs and we were talking about summer times and the soundtracks of those summers and Hootie for me was it.
02:07And we were writing a different song.
02:10We were writing Bottle Rockets as just a standalone song.
02:13And then my producer went in to hold my hand and it, like, fit.
02:16We were like, oh, what is this?
02:18So, it just fit like a glove and we ran with it.
02:21So, do you, I know that, you know, you're, how has it been being a father?
02:26You know, Father's Day is coming up.
02:28How has that impacted your life?
02:31It's the biggest thing that's ever happened to me, for sure.
02:34And, you know, watching Gabi be a mom and just how much fun we've had.
02:38Time flies.
02:39Like, he's already two and a half and running around and he's talking a mile a minute.
02:44But it's just so fun watching him grow.
02:46So, having two is going to be insane.
02:48Like, I feel like it's, we already have our hands full a little bit.
02:51And it's like, oh, all right, now you're going to have both hands full.
02:53But in all the best ways, you know, it's the coolest, best thing I've ever done is being a dad.
02:59And what does it feel like being a father, like, on the other side?
03:02Like, from when you, you know, you guys first got pregnant and now on to your second child.
03:06How has that changed your mindset?
03:08Yeah, I think it changes everything.
03:10You know, your priorities change.
03:11And, you know, again, just having two.
03:14I'm almost like trying to remember what we did, you know, the first time around.
03:18Like, how do we do this?
03:19How do we do that?
03:21But, you know, we have a good friend group around us.
03:23And a lot of our other friends are having kids right now.
03:25So, we're all helping each other.
03:27But mindsets change.
03:28Priorities change.
03:29Playing a lot less golf nowadays, but I wouldn't have it any other way, you know.
03:32So, yeah.
03:34And is there a piece of advice that your parents gave you as a kid that suddenly, like, makes perfect sense now to you?
03:41Oh, my goodness.
03:43I think just enjoying the moment you're in, you know.
03:46And, you know, you're only getting older.
03:48I mean, I swear I threw out my back the other day and I could barely walk.
03:52And I was like, my word.
03:53Like, this is really ridiculous.
03:54It's hurting all over.
03:55But so I try to live that way.
03:58You know, just enjoying the moment.
04:00I get to play the Grand Ole Opry tonight.
04:01Like, really being here and soaking it in.
04:03Because every day is a special one.
04:06You've got to make it.
04:07You've got to make it that way.
04:08Did you ever have a moment when your, you know, your first child was born where you got to sing for them the first time?
04:13Like, did you?
04:14How did that feel?
04:15Yeah, I sing to him every night.
04:17Yeah, I sing to him the go-to-sleep song.
04:19He sings, You Are My Sunshine.
04:21And he loves it.
04:22He loves to sing.
04:23And he loves it.
04:23He's Daddy's biggest fan.
04:24He loves all the music.
04:26But he loves, like, the Disney soundtracks, too.
04:29Like, the Buzz Lightyear songs and everything.
04:32When I got inducted into the Opry, as a member, they asked me if I wanted anybody to sing on the show.
04:37And I asked for a group called Riders in the Sky because they sing the Toy Story.
04:41What?
04:41He's Roundup.
04:42You know, that song.
04:43Yeah.
04:43It was just for Avery because he was here and he loved it.
04:46So it was so cool.
04:46Is he just jumping up and down?
04:48We have video of him literally, like, just going up and down.
04:51He was loving it.
04:52So pretty cool.
