US-Präsident Donald Trump und Bundeskanzler Friedrich Merz (CDU) haben sich bei ihrem Treffen im Weißen Haus durchaus launig unterhalten. Dabei ging es um die Ukraine, Trumps deutsche Herkunft, ein Handelsabkommen mit der EU - und der US-Präsident konnte sich einen Seitenhieb auf Angela Merkel nicht verkneifen.

01:00Uh, part of our mandate is we're going to have a great relationship with your country.

01:10I was in this building first time ever in 1982, I told you, when former President Ronald Reagan was in office.

01:17So I'm very happy to be here again and to offer our close cooperation with the United States of America.

01:24Uh, we are having so much in common, our history.

01:29We owe the Americans a lot.

01:31We will never forget about that.

01:33And, uh, so with your German provenance, I think this is a very good basis for close cooperation between America and Germany.

01:40So, again, thank you.

01:43We're not stopping until we get them out.

01:47I hate to, I even hate to say this in front of the Chancellor.

01:51Of course, you have a little problem, too, with some of the people that were allowed into your country.

02:25I mean, I guess that will be mostly determined by the European Union, but you're a very big part of that, so you'll be involved.

02:32But, uh, we'll end up hopefully with a trade deal, or, or we'll do something.

02:37You know, we'll do the tariffs.

02:38I mean, I'm okay with the tariffs.

02:39I don't know.

02:40I mean, I haven't discussed it very much.

02:42I know that you're spending more money on defense now.

02:45And, uh, quite a bit more money.

02:48That's a positive thing.

02:50I'm not sure that General MacArthur would have said it's positive, you know.

02:54He wouldn't like it, but I sort of think it's good.

02:57You understand what I mean by that?

02:58Absolutely, I understand.

02:59He made a statement, never let Germany rearm.

03:03And I said, I always think about that when he says, sir, we're spending more money on defense.

03:07I say, oh, is that a good thing or a bad thing?

03:10I think it's a good thing.

03:11Uh, but, you know, at least to a certain point.

03:15There'll be a point when I'll say, please don't arm anymore if you don't mind.

03:19We'll be watching him.
