00:00In the heart of Shekhupura during the second test between South Africa and Pakistan from
00:05October 17 to 21, 1997, Hansi Kronje played a brilliant knock that reflected his trademark
00:12great and calm.
00:14The South African skipper crafted a solid 50 of 90 balls spanning 97 minutes at the
00:19crease and laced his innings with three elegant fours and three towering sixties, each one
00:24a sight to behold.
00:26What made this half century even more memorable was the way Kronje took the attack to Pakistani
00:31spinners.
00:32He launched two massive sixes of the dangerous Mushtaq Ahmed, reading the leg spin perfectly
00:36and deposited one more into the stands of Ali Hussain Rizwin, showing supreme confidence
00:42against spin on a subcontinental pitch.
00:44Let's rewind the clock and relive this determined knock by Hansi Kronje, a captain innings stitched
00:50together with passion, power and purpose, a gem from the golden wallet of 90s cricket.
00:55So an early breakthrough for Pakistan has brought the South African captain Hansi Kronje to
01:02the wicket.
01:06And he'll be very eager to do well today.
01:12This is off the pad.
01:14This is off the pad.
01:18A leg by.
01:19That's the slog sweep as Hansi Kronje has had that shot described as on many occasions.
01:35And slogs a little bit unfair because he's totally in control of what he's doing.
01:41It's not a sweep shot because it doesn't go behind square beautifully executed.
01:46And this is hammered handsomely on the onside by Kronje.
01:56Total control of that shot on that occasion.
01:59And that boundary bringing up the 200 for South Africa.
02:04Again, picking the right length to sweep and the right line just outside off stump, pad goes
02:11down outside off stump, misses it, hits the pad, not out, outside the line.
02:16See it here, there it pitches, outside the line, bang, hit it very hard too.
02:28Oh, well, that was a fine stroke and Kronje has always been looking to get after the spinners.
02:35And that's six runs, a beautiful stroke, coming down the pitch, hitting through the ball and
02:41a glorious shot.
02:43Well, he's always been a batsman who likes to go over the top.
02:47He's a very good player on the aerial route, lovely use of the feet, nice chasse down the
02:52pitch.
02:55Like all batsmen, occasionally you'll get out going over the top, but he does get a
02:59lot of runs because he's confident and plays it well.
03:09Well, Kronje was waiting for the chance.
03:11He was a bit like a coiled spring and my goodness me, he's hit that well.
03:14Six runs over wide long on.
03:17That was a massive blow.
03:20Now, to some people who have not seen Hansi Kronje, but it might seem a little bit like
03:24a sort of slog to mid-wicket.
03:26But it isn't.
03:27It's a well-constructed shot.
03:29It's one of his pet shots, actually.
03:31I've seen him play that shot many, many times to all kinds of spinners.
03:37And he very rarely misses it.
03:40Gets that left leg out of the way, free swing of the bat.
03:44It's not the most elegant looking shot, but my, it is a very effective and big run scoring
03:50shot for him.
03:52There goes Kronje again with one of his favorite shots, and he smears that to the boundary.
04:05It was a flamboyant innings, but it was full of character, timing and intent.
04:34Vintage Kronje at his best.
04:36With the scoreboard ticking, he absorbed the situation and counterattack with precision,
04:41anchoring the South African middle order with authority.
04:44Hansi Kronje was one of South Africa's most influential cricketers and a natural born leader,
04:50a right-handed middle order bestman and a medium-paced baller.
04:53Kronje captained the South African national team during the 1990s, leading them through one
04:58of their most competitive eras.
05:01Known for their calm temperament and sharp cricketing brain, he was admired for his ability to steady
05:06the innings under pressure and guide his team in tense situations.
05:11Under his leadership, South Africa became a dominant force in both Test and ODI cricket,
05:15winning numerous series home and away.
05:18Beyond the statistics, Kronje was respected for his work ethic, fierce competitiveness, and
05:23his tactical approach on the field.
05:25However, his career and legacy were tragically overshadowed by a match-fixing scandal in 2000,
05:32leading to a life ban from the game.
05:34He died just two years later in a plane crash in 2002 at the age of 32.
05:39Despite the controversy, many still remember him for the passion and intensity he brought
05:44to South African cricket during his prime.
