New Zealand’s Parliament suspended three opposition lawmakers, Rawiri Waititi, Debbie Ngarewa-Packer, and Hana-Rawhiti Maipi-Clarke, over their haka performance in protest of a controversial bill. The bill, supported by the conservative government, sparked backlash from the Māori community, with critics claiming it represented an anti-Māori agenda. This protest, the most severe disciplinary action against lawmakers in New Zealand’s history, signals a growing debate over Māori culture’s role in public life and the nation’s push for Indigenous rights.

00:00Before, please, Clark, conduct a party vote.
00:02New Zealand National.
00:0349 votes opposed.
00:06He uttered the words as the noose was pulled around his neck.
00:12And he uttered the words,
00:14Take the noose from around my neck so that I may sing my song.
00:23The intention is that Hana Rawhiti Maipi-Clark be suspended from the service of the House for seven days
00:31for acting in a manner that could have the effect of intimidating a member of the House in the discharge of their duty.
00:39Those of that opinion will say aye.
00:42Aye.
00:43To the contrary, no.
00:44No.
00:45The ayes have it.
00:47No.
00:47Hana Rawhiti Maipi-Clark therefore is suspended from the service of the House for seven days starting from today.
00:57Debbie Naurua-Paka therefore is suspended from the service of the House for 21 days starting from today.
01:05The question is agreed to.
01:07Rawiri Waititi therefore is suspended from the service of the House for 21 days starting from today.
01:14The silencing of us today is a reminder of the silencing of our ancestors of the past.
01:21And it continues to happen today.
01:2421 days of silence.
01:29This may be confronting, but this is a reality for our whanous.
01:34This is a reality for the people who descend from Tipuna, who are wrongfully accused.
01:39Because you interpreted something.
01:43Interpretation is a feeling.
01:45It's not a fact.
01:47If we do nothing, Aotearoa will sprint towards the worst fractures of other nations.
01:54Division.
01:55Fear.
01:57Resentment.
01:58Faster than we can say kia ora.
01:59We haven't created the violence here.
02:04And now you've traded the noose for legislation.
02:12Well I've got a message for you all today.
02:15We will not be silenced.
02:18We will not be assimilated.
02:19We will not be subjugated.
02:23And we make no apology for being absolutely, unapologetically, unfettered, unbridled Maori human beings.
02:34Now, haka have been done countless times in this parliament.
02:38But after first consulting the speaker, so that the House and its timing is not disrupted.
02:44That's what happened here.
02:45There was no attempt whatsoever.
02:47Worse still, they told the media they were going to do it.
02:49And didn't tell the speaker, did they?
02:51That's the truth, isn't it?
02:53Oh, am I hearing any denial?
02:55No, no, I'm not.
02:57That's the way they think they can behave.
02:59New Zealand is a democracy.
03:02And whether the party Maori like it or not, and using Maori culture as an excuse for their disgraceful behaviour, is an insult to Maori.
03:11Some of us were working for Maori before you were born.
03:13They've got no record of done one thing.
03:16Not one of those people can rise up in this house and tell you one thing they've ever done for Maori.
