00:00You may have heard your gym buddy, a co-worker, or family member talking about taking a supplement
00:05called Creatine. It is a billion-dollar supplement that is exploding in popularity,
00:10but you should take it. Creatine sales are expected to soar to over $4 billion by the
00:16end of the decade, according to Grandview Research. Sales have more than doubled in
00:21the last five years. Michael Reivers, a dietitian at the University of Maryland Medical Center who
00:27is also a specialist in sports dietetics, stated, there are a number of things that I think are
00:32pushing Creatine. Creatine is something your body is creating and naturally storing, according to
00:39Reivers. When you are supplementing it, all you're doing is encouraging the body to store more of it,
00:44Reivers said. Creatine gives your brain and muscles more energy. Traditionally, supplements have made
00:51it possible for athletes to exercise more and gain lean muscle mass. Popularity of the supplement,
00:57specifically Creatine monohydrate, has grown outside the gym because of new studies that
01:02show its benefits. We are testing Creatine for everything from, you know, the sports performance
01:08as we were before, to cognitive benefit. I've actually seen a couple studies lately for Creatine
01:14and menopause as well, Reivers said. We're looking toward Creatine either delaying or helping with
01:20Alzheimer's and cognitive decline. Although many of these early studies on Creatine's cognitive benefits
01:26are based on relatively small samples, Reivers anticipates that definitive research on its
01:31benefits will emerge within a decade. Is it safe for you to take? Reivers stated, perfectly fine for
01:38your average individual with healthy kidney function. Discuss the recommended dosage with your physician.
