00:00One, two, three, take off the blindfold.
00:06Oh my god!
00:09This is my wife.
00:10For as long as I've known her,
00:12she's always dreamed of one thing.
00:14Having a dream garden that she can look out on
00:17while she goes about her day.
00:19But like a lot of us,
00:20the last few years have been crazy.
00:23But today, for $5,000,
00:26I'm going to build a dream garden
00:28and surprise her with it.
00:30So what we're doing today is
00:31we're doing a cheap, affordable way
00:33to fill in and wash out your backyard.
00:36This is the before.
00:38Get ready, because the after is coming right now.
00:41The rest of our trees and plants have all arrived.
00:44We even got a giant pindopalm.
00:47This thing is so heavy
00:48that just to get it off the truck,
00:50we had to lay it down on its side.
00:52And by lay it down,
00:54I mean let it fall down.
00:55Because this tree is thousands of pounds.
00:58So one of the ideas that Green Valley Landscaping had
01:01was to knock all this dirt off
01:03around the base of the tree.
01:04Because this dirt, believe it or not,
01:06can take off over 1,000 pounds of weight.
01:08From there, they can stand it up on a dolly
01:11and bring it all the way to the backyard
01:14without a crane.
01:16Now of course there were some hurdles along the way
01:18going up this giant hill.
01:20But using a crowbar,
01:22some leverage,
01:23some physics,
01:24and of course some good old-fashioned muscle and manpower,
01:28these guys were able to get this tree
01:29all the way right next to the hole
01:32that is going in.
01:34From there, it was really interesting
01:35because using some straps and the dolly,
01:37they kind of laid the tree down,
01:39rolled it off the dolly,
01:40and guess what?
01:42Ended up perfectly in place
01:44to just lift up into the hole,
01:48which is the final step of this giant tree.
01:51All six guys lift this thing up,
01:54and with the tree this heavy,
01:55wherever it lands,
01:57that's where it's staying.
01:58We had some smaller Mexican fan palms as well.
02:01These were only four feet.
02:02They were much lighter,
02:03much more man before they could
02:04ring around the backyard,
02:06but they still put three guys
02:07for each one in position.
02:09Big shout-out to Green Valley Landscaping
02:10who did a great job
02:11with this whole project.
02:14And Salmo, the owner of Green Valley Landscaping,
02:15also showed you this amazing way
02:17to get rid of scorpions
02:19on palm trees.
02:21You do this by running a razor blade
02:22around the palm tree,
02:24and you just remove these little hiding spots
02:26in the bark scorpions like to hide in.
02:29After all the big trees are planted,
02:31it's time to position the small plants
02:33around the big trees.
02:34All right, so here's all the plants.
02:36We have them in their pots.
02:38Now it's time for the most difficult part,
02:40figuring out where they go
02:41in placing them.
02:42So right now we're placing
02:43these one-gallon purple hearts
02:45here at the bottom of the planter
02:47here near this palm.
02:50In this planter,
02:50it will really go well
02:52with the blue of the pool
02:54to the purple,
02:55and then this cup of orange
02:55really ties it all together.
02:57One of my favorite things
02:58about these purple hearts,
02:59you can see why they get their name,
03:00because look at the way they bloom here.
03:02It is so beautiful,
03:03and it does kind of resemble a heart.
03:04And this color is so vibrant
03:06against this green, right?
03:08Look at that.
03:09Especially in the desert
03:09where the sun is so hard,
03:11it's nice to have a cloud.
03:12It's not so bright and washed out.
03:14All right, guys,
03:15so this tree is done.
03:16It is planted.
03:17We're taking all the extra rocks
03:18that came out of the ground.
03:19We're making a little pile
03:20for all of them,
03:21just like that.
03:23Now take a look.
03:23This tree is done.
03:25We have this tree in here planted.
03:27These flowers are going to go
03:28right over here to cover that up.
03:30And look,
03:31it's starting to fill in that fence,
03:32because we have this ugly fence
03:34that we're trying to cover.
03:35And with all these plants,
03:36high and low,
03:37you kind of fit together
03:38like a puzzle piece
03:39that's going to cover the whole fence,
03:40make it green,
03:41make it beautiful.
03:42I'm here with Anselmo.

03:48tell us what we're doing today.
03:50Well, right here,
03:50what we're trying to do
03:51is to get a nice tropical look.
03:54Since we have the pool around here,
03:56we are going to get some tall palm trees.
04:00These Mexican palm palms,
04:01we want them to grow over
04:03the rest of the greenery around.
04:05As you can see right now,
04:06we'll put them in the ground.
04:07And also,
04:08we have a nice sebal palm
04:09that's going to give us
04:11a really nice tropical look.
04:12We wanted to be able to layer, right?
04:15We wanted to do the short plants in front,
04:17and then the taller plants
04:18as we go back,
04:19because we don't want to do
04:19the tall plants in front,
04:21because then you block off
04:21your whole vision of the thing,
04:23and it makes it seem
04:23like a smaller backyard.
04:24So one of the things we're doing,
04:25like the seago palm right there
04:27is the short palm right in front,
04:28and then it kind of slopes up the hill,
04:30and the bigger plants go in the back.
04:31Then also,
04:32we're going to add some lighting.
04:33All underneath all the,
04:34every tree and plant,
04:36all planted will get light.
04:38So one of the biggest differences,
04:39actually,
04:39that Anselmo made on my backyard
04:40the first time
04:41was all the lighting that we put in,
04:43because at night,
04:44if it's not lit up,
04:44it's just invisible.
04:45It's just completely pitch black.
04:47One of the cool things
04:47I learned from your guys, actually,
04:49was rather than
04:49just aiming the light
04:50directly at a plant,
04:52it's to shoot it up through it,
04:53and it kind of catches
04:54all the branches and the leaves,
04:55and it gives us this kind of
04:56cool, whimsical,
04:58magical Harry Potter feel to it.

05:07When you come out here at night,
05:08you can just,
05:09you can feel it on your lips,
05:11that it's not quite as dry.

05:15It just feels more natural and beautiful.

05:23I actually planted this
05:24so it's tilted on its side.
05:25The reason I did that
05:26is that if you aim it
05:27towards where you're looking,
05:29you can actually see
05:30inside the bloom of the flower
05:31rather than just looking up it like that.
05:32So that's what I did right here,
05:33because that's where we're looking at it from.
05:35And this is where you want to see
05:37into the plant.
