00:00Don't you know me, boy?
00:07Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we're counting down our picks for the fantasy movie characters
00:11that we feel deserve more love and attention.
00:14If you want to play it smart, I'll introduce you to Vernon.
00:19He eats anything, you know.
00:22Number 10. Draco the Dragon, Dragonheart
00:25The voice of Sir Sean Connery is immediately recognisable,
00:29whether he's portraying 007 or doing character work for films such as 1996's Dragonheart.
00:34I will not stop until I've rid the world of every last one of you.
00:38I am the last one.
00:43Connery brings to life Draco the Dragon, the last of a dying breed.
00:47The tragedy of Draco's backstory earns the viewer's sympathy,
00:50while at the same time celebrating and commenting upon
00:53fatalist tropes that work within fantasy films, as well as in classic westerns.
00:57So instead of calling me Dragon in your tongue, you'll call me Dragon in some other tongue?
01:02You're right.
01:04It's silly.
01:05No.
01:06No, I would be honoured to be named after those stars, right?
01:10Draco's willingness to give up half of his own heart to save another character,
01:14and that character's betrayal of his promise to Draco,
01:17makes him a character that deserves to be better known
01:19and appreciated by fantasy fans.
01:22Number 9.
01:34Ogra, Keeper of Secrets, The Dark Crystal
01:37Fan attention has, perhaps for obvious reasons,
01:40largely fallen on the Skeksis,
01:42when it comes to the wonderful characters found within 1982's The Dark Crystal.
01:46Yet these memorable antagonists aren't the only imaginative creatures
01:50emanating from the fertile, creative minds of Jim Henson and his crew.
01:54Ogra, Keeper of Secrets, is seen early on in the film,
01:58when she assists Jen with information via her oracular powers.
02:02Stachy! Stachy!
02:06Oh!
02:09Nia, Gelfling, Rich!
02:14Her puppetry design is extravagant and wonderful to behold,
02:18while her peculiar, somewhat ornery personality is full of charm.
02:22Questions, questions, too many questions.
02:24You want a shard? Here.
02:27Ogra also returns for the film's climax,
02:29assisting Jen once again and saving the adorable fizz gig for good measure.
02:35How did you get out there?
02:42Come on, then.
02:43Number 8.
02:44The Thorn, Pan's Labyrinth
02:46It's difficult to single out one particular sequence or scene
02:50from Guillermo del Toro's Pan's Labyrinth.
02:52The film is frankly an embarrassment of creative riches.
02:55That said, del Toro's film probably wouldn't have been the same
02:57without the physical performance of Doug Jones as both the Pale Man and the Thorn.
03:02I am...
03:03I...
03:04I am...
03:05I am...
03:08In fact, some critical analysis of Pan's Labyrinth has stated that the two characters may, in fact,
03:21be opposing sides of the same coin.
03:24That said, Jones' fawn takes from the mythical source material and creates a very subtle malevolence.
03:38The audience is never 100% sure that the fawn is on the up-and-up,
03:46and it's this moral ambiguity that helps make his scenes absolutely unmissable.
03:597. The Bandits
04:01Time Bandits
04:02Writer-director Terry Gilliam's filmography is unlike any other.
04:06Thanks to his unfettered imagination and his skewed way of looking at the world.
04:10Time Bandits is gloriously chaotic and immensely fun, thanks largely to his ensemble cast.
04:17The titular bandits travel throughout history and time,
04:19as the film leaps from one extravagant set piece to another.
04:22I don't know anything.
04:23You know and you're not going to tell us while I'm getting angry and vermin here is getting hung.
04:28I know.
04:31He's found it.
04:32Watch the way out.
04:33He's never done that before.
04:34Sure, the idea of dwarven heroes feels very Tolkien-esque, but make no mistake,
04:40Time Bandits is a cinematic journey that practically dares its audience to hang on for the ride.
04:45Go!
04:46Go!

05:01You see, to be quite frank, Kevin, the fabric of the universe is far from perfect.
05:06It was a bit of a botched job, you see.
05:08We only had seven days to make it.
05:10Number 6.
05:11Gladriel, the Lord of the Rings franchise.
05:13There's a reason why J.R.R.
05:15Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings is considered by many to be the greatest fantasy epic full stop.
05:21There's a treasure trove of fascinating cult characters, from Treebeard to Eyemer to our pick
05:26Galadriel. The fact that she's played by the immensely talented Cate Blanchett certainly
05:39doesn't hurt. The journey to meet Galadriel in Lothlorien is a milestone during The Fellowship
05:44of the Ring, and points up the character's importance.
05:47For the mirror shows many things. Things that were, things that are, and some things that have not yet come to pass.
06:09It's also the Elf Queen who underlines the importance of Frodo Baggins' mission,
06:13and the potential for chaos if he should fail.
06:16And she's even strong enough to refuse temptation from The One Ring.
06:19I know what it is you saw.
06:32Number 5, Count Tyrone Rugen, The Princess Bride.
06:36Two themes converged during the climax of 1987's The Princess Bride. True love and revenge.
06:42This is where Count Tyrone Rugen, the six-fingered man, comes into play.
06:45You have six fingers on your right hand. Someone was looking for you.
06:51We, the audience, are naturally hoping that all works out for Buttercup and her sweet Westley.
06:56Yet, there's just something captivating about the journey of Inigo Montoya,
07:00as he ascends from drunken depression to an emotionally charged confrontation with Rugen.
07:05If you've been chasing me your whole life only to fail now, I think that's the worst thing I've ever heard.
07:14How marvellous.
07:16Christopher Guest portrays the murdering Count in an understated manner,
07:19and this quiet malevolence makes Rugen all the more dangerous.
07:23His final sword fight with Inigo is the stuff of movie legend,
07:26and it took the talent of both actors to bring this moment to life.
07:30My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die.
07:36Stop saying that!
07:38Number 4. Gurgi, The Black Cauldron
07:40Much has been said over the years about how unapologetically dark Disney went with 1982's The Black Cauldron.
07:46This decision nearly bankrupted the company's animation division,
07:50but the film has been reappraised by fans over the years.
07:53The Horned King is one of the most harrowing Disney villains, full stop.
07:56But we'd also like to take the time to defend little Gurgi.
08:00He will untie everybody.
08:02Then we won't leave this evil place.
08:04But get on with it.
08:07Good boy, Gurgi.
08:08This tiny little monster is actually a bosom companion in the source material,
08:13and this loyalty is at least hinted at in the scene where Gurgi offers himself as a sacrifice to the Black Cauldron.
08:19Oh, no.
08:25John Biner's voice acting decisions for Gurgi may be divisive,
08:29but there's no denying the character's place within the imaginative fantasy world.
08:34Gurgi is bold and brave. He will climb into the evil Padwin.
08:37Number 3. Artax, The Horse
08:39The NeverEnding Story
08:41It is the cinematic death that has traumatised children for decades.
08:45We don't think we've ever wept over an animal's cinematic demise the way we bawled our eyes out
08:50when Artax, The Horse, fell into the swamps of sadness.
08:56Artax, please?
08:59You're letting the sadness of the swamps get to you.
09:01Of course, it helps that the musical score from cult synthesizer pioneer,
09:06Giorgio Moroder,
09:07and jazz legend,
09:09Klaus Daldinger,
09:10created the properly melancholic mood.
09:12The soundtrack cue that we hear during Artax's death is burned into our memories forever.
09:26The horse's miraculous resurrection at the end of The NeverEnding Story is more than welcome,
09:30but didn't help our little hearts recover from the thrashing they took earlier in the film.
09:35I won't give up! Don't quit!
09:39Artax!
09:40Please!
09:45Number 2. Darkness, Legend
09:47It's fitting that one of the original taglines for Ridley Scott's 1985 film Legend was,
09:53There may never be another dawn.
09:55This ties in nicely with the film's central antagonist, Darkness,
09:58played by a frankly unrecognisable Tim Curry.
10:01Does the gown not please you?
10:06No.
10:10Can you speak so of your bridal gown?
10:15I've found my true mate.
10:17The makeup here is on another level,
10:20bringing Darkness to life as some sort of satanic overlord of the underworld.
10:24It's actually implied in the film that Darkness may not, in fact, be the actual devil.
10:29Since he calls out to his father for help near the film's climax.
10:33Father!
10:35Prepare me!
10:40What we do know, however, is how Curry's charisma,
10:44and the film crew's amazing special effects work,
10:46made Darkness one of 80s fantasy cinema's most memorable villains.
10:51Always a pleasure to take a brave man's life.
10:55Before we unveil our top pick, here are a few honourable mentions.
11:02Aslan, The Chronicles of Narnia franchise.
11:04A divine lion from the world of C.S. Lewis.
11:07I will do what I can to help your brother,
11:10but I need you to consider what I ask of you.
11:15I do want my family safe.
11:18Sir Didymus, Labyrinth.
11:19A brave, chivalrous, and diminutive knight.
11:23Come on, let us get across.
11:25Hold!
11:29Listen, I don't want to have to hurt you.
11:32Queen Bav Morda.
11:33Willow.
11:34Jean Marsh brings ferocity to this villainous role.
11:38Now you will watch me draw from the power of the universe
11:42to send that child into the netherworld.
11:45Now place it on the altar!
11:46Thulsa Doom, Conan the Barbarian.
11:49Sinister sorcerer and leader of the Serpent cult.
11:52Steel isn't strong, boy.
11:55Flesh is stronger.
11:58Look around you.
12:00The Kurgan, Highlander.
12:02There can be only one winner,
12:04and the Kurgan stands in your way.
12:06Don't ever speak to me again.
12:11Do you understand?
12:12Good.

12:32Number 1.
12:33Luna Lovegood.
12:34Harry Potter franchise.
12:36Fans of the Harry Potter film series,
12:37just like Tolkien fanatics,
12:39often gravitate towards a favourite minor character.
12:42Luna Lovegood is a great choice, too,
12:44since her faith-based approach to the world around her
12:47makes her easy to like,
12:48and her film appearances are quite memorable.
12:50You're not going mad.
12:55I can see them, too.
12:59You're just as sane as I am.
13:01Irish actress Ivana Lynch
13:02brings a precociousness to the role,
13:04as well as an earnestness
13:06that highlights her loyalty and friendship.
13:08Hello, Harry Potter.
13:12Your feet, aren't they cold?
13:16A bit.
13:18Unfortunately, all my shoes have mysteriously disappeared.
13:23I suspect nargles are behind it.
13:25Lynch's performance breathes life into Luna Lovegood,
13:28making the characters spring from the pages
13:30of J.K. Rowling's fiction into a cult cinematic life.
13:34Anyway, my mum always said
13:36the things we lose have a way of coming back to us in the end.
13:39If not always in the way we expect.
13:46Which fantasy film character do you think deserves more visibility?

13:51That is strength, boy.

14:06Let us know in the comments.
14:06That is power.
14:07That is power.
14:09Whale.
14:10Look, you don't have a解 for this.
14:12Let us know in the comments.
14:14Yeah, let us know in the comments.
14:16Let us know in the comments.
14:16Look, hands in the comments.
14:17Let us know in the comments.
14:19That is power.
14:22This is power.
14:23You want to hear the摘 Şimdi macht towards me.
