Tesla does not plan to manufacture cars in India and is instead focusing on importing vehicles, according to Reuters. The minister for heavy industries, HD Kumaraswamy, said Tesla is not expected to show interest, as the company is not interested in manufacturing in India. India will sharply reduce import taxes for foreign automakers that commit to building EV production lines domestically. The policy was aimed at attracting Tesla, but Elon Musk paused investment plans last year. Tesla plans to import cars into India despite Elon Musk's ongoing criticism of the country’s high import tariffs. Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen, Hyundai, and Kia have expressed interest in India's EV manufacturing policy, according to Kumaraswamy.
